    Yehudi Menuhin, Baron Menuhin, OM, KBE (April 22, 1916 -- March 12, 1999) was a Russian Jewish American violinist and conductor who spent most of his performing career in the United Kingdom. He was born to Russian Jewish parents in the United States, but became a citizen of Switzerland in 1970, and of the United Kingdom in 1985. He is often considered to have been one of the twentieth century's greatest violin virtuosi
    Yehudi Menuhin was born in New York City, New York, to Bielorussian Jewish parents from what is now Belarus. His sisters were the concert pianist and human rights worker Hephzibah Menuhin and the pianist, painter, and poet Yaltah Menuhin. Through his father Moshe Menuhin, a former rabbinical student and anti-Zionist writer, Menuhin was descended from a distinguished rabbinical dynasty.
    Menuhin began violin instruction at age four under violinist Sigmund Anker; his parents had wanted Louis Persinger to be his teacher, but Persinger refused.[2] He displayed extraordinary talents at an early age. His first solo violin performance was at the age of seven with the San Francisco Symphony in 1923. Persinger then agreed to take Menuhin as a student. When the Menuhins went to Paris, Persinger suggested Yehudi go to his own teacher, Eugène Ysaÿe. He did have one lesson with Ysaÿe, but did not like his method or the fact that he was very old.[2] Instead, he went to the Romanian composer and violinist George Enescu, after which he made several recordings with his sister Hephzibah. He was also a student of Adolf Busch. In 1929 he played in Berlin, under Bruno Walter's baton, three concerti by Bach, Brahms and Beethoven. In 1932, he recorded Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto in B minor for HMV in London, with the composer himself conducting, and between 1934 and 1936 he made the first integral recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin.

    It does not really matter if he misses notes.. His musicianship is so divine that I would prefer one million times to hear this kind of playing instead of immaculate and cold perfection

      Perfection in itself is very much warm, not cold like you suggest...

    Oistrakhfollower - I've never met anyone courageous enough to compare themselves to Menuhin, who despite struggling with a difficult transition from child prodigy to adult superstar is still considered by many to be one of the pre-eminent performers ever on the instrument. In 70+ years of playing there are bound to be some less than stellar performances. But even still, his interpretations serve as models for every aspiring musician. I'm pretty sure you are not a better player. ; )

    If you compare this to how perfectly he played this as a teenager, you'd know why Menuhin used to be the ultimate wunderkid. Unfortunately by this time his technique and bowing were well in decline.

    The Menuhin Estate should have attempted to delete this in an effort to preserve his reputation. Why he kept this Concerto in his repertory far past the point where he could play it even passably is puzzling to say the least. The performance here makes me think of Florence Foster Jenkins.

    There's something very wrong with his right arm. I'm guessing some kind of illness?

    • @srinitaaigaura
      @srinitaaigaura Год назад

      He had some shoulder issues because of how high he used to hold his arm earlier. It must surely be some kind of nerve damage because his hands shook in later years.

    alcuni passi anche molto difficili li fa benissimo ,altri incredibilmente stonato soprattutto all'inizio e fischia tantissime note.. mi sa che aveva qualche problema quel giorno... la qualità della registrazione fa piuttosto pena soprattutto sui registri acuti

      la técnica del menuhin se volvió mala cuando él era mayor. esto fue alrededor de 1960, por lo que ya pasó su mejor

    I agree. No wonder Menuhin said of her as the most perfect, wonderful and ideal violin player he'd ever heard. Although it is so strange though, how such a great name comes second to a 12 year old... I'm wondering if it's difference of taste in their interpretations...

    What a wonderful document of Paganini played with Parkinson! Just marvellous!! I mean..., a true example of overcoming...
    Now seriously, as for his playing here..., really sad and painful to see (and listen). Because of some obvious neurological condition..., I guess.

  • @saevius1

    it's not specifically a matter of taste but of level of technical skill. I suppose that Menuhin was really amazed by Changs play, just because his own skills were just outdated. If you add his fysical age to his poor performance, then you would rate him not only second to a 12 year old genius, but maybe ....way back in the queu...

      Kazra: Alas it is not fake. This is an accurate reflection of how Menuhin played the Paganini Concerto from the 1950's onward. This was the best he could do.
