Listening to Shelton describe the buffalo in -60 degree weather on the Ken Burns documentary on the National parks left me speechless, and with tears running down my face. He has such a great way with words that few people posses. I loved listening to him talk about the Buffalo Soldiers too. I too would love to meet him someday. What a great story teller.
Thank you PBS. It has been my pleasure to see Ranger Johnson (I like to call him Trooper Johnson) in person as he takes on his Buffalo Soldier persona. It is always enjoyable, informative, entertaining and educational. Trooper Ron Jones - Buffalo Soldier 9th & 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association
Very well done, nicely shot, great editing, just fantastic. When I was a kid my family would visit Yosemite every year. The park was peaceful and beautiful and not very crowded. As I grew up I remember having difficulty getting into the park (you had to reserve a campsite one year in advance). I remember in my 20s I wanted to show my girlfriend the splendor that was Yosemite but had to reserve almost two years in advance. The park is now very over crowded, and not what is used to be.
14 years after the Little Big Horn, the 7th Cavalry was entrapped in a box canyon, and if it wasn't for the 9th Cavalry, there would have been a second massacre of the 7th Cav. The Buffalo Soldiers, 9th Cavalry was rewarded with Presidential Parade Escort and Guard Duties for accomplishments, furthermore; the 9th Cav. received as many citations as most of the white cavs. Read the epic novel, "Rescue at Pine Ridge", 5 stars Amazon, and Barnes & Noble. Long live the Buffalo Soldiers...
Not to be too political, but I fundamentally disagree with the notion that EVERYTHING the government touches, or gets involved with is ruined. I cite the creation of a National Parks System as case in point. Without this socialized and government-run program, our most cherished landscapes would be destroyed and cheapened by private development.
Ranger Shelton is an outstanding ambassador for Yosemite and the National Parks!

A great documentary! I experienced Yosemite as a kid, 50 years ago. I need to go back. And I need to learn more about the Buffalo Soldiers.
