    Being a truck driver for 21 years with a perfect safety record the fact is this truck is nice and dandy rolling down a empty test bed but the fact is given the unperdictability of other peoples driving and verying road conditions this truck has a long way to go to replace a real driver which as you can see they can not phase out of the driver seat because there is a trust issue The fact is a to replace a driver like myself is a long way off and basically this is a ploy just to get research funding and even if you do make one lets see what it does when you begin to jacknife on ice the fact is I am in my 40s and this will not take effect till long after I am worm food

      Well in all honesty in the 1950s they said we would be driving personal aircraft everywhere in the united states the thing is people like to dream this will be a immediate thing but the reallity there is so many obsiticals mentally and legally that I will probally be retired or dead before this takes affect. And in regards to the less than desireable drivers we have the same issue in the united states alot of the jobs are being filled by immigrants from africa and russia and their standards of how they perform is not the same as some of us veteran drivers and it is a whole diffrent atmosphere out there those movies with all the truckers getting along etc that is not reality anymore But hey when the time comes maybe I can drive the truck from my lazyboy at home works for me

      Really have you ever driven a truck I think not otherwise you would not make those comments there is so many things you have to deal with not only the millenial a holes out there on the road the weather and just so many things that a common person would have no clue of like yourself in no means do I appreciate someone saying that we are lazy bums if it wasn't for our hard work you spoiled brat kids would not have all your tech devices now I could have taken this down the polite path but when someone says that we dont work hard coming from someone that has no experience I take offense to it and I will not reply to any of your messages sent from here on out maybe some of you kids need to pull your heads out of your asses

      What do you have to say about Budweiser using an Otto new driverless truck that just made the first run for them without a driver actually behind the steering wheel? They will be replacing long distance truck drivers within 10 years or less .. you watch. The technology is new and has so many flaws yet to be dealt with to turn these trucks & cars loose on the highway. I find this self driving truck frightening. I know it will be in the future. We cannot stop it. But this constant rush to eliminate the human factor to make it cheaper for the business man to run a business will bite us in the bum. These companies have no patience anymore or real understanding of what it takes to drive a truck in all conditions. That would be like taking some yahoo off the streets putting then in the pilot seat of a commercial jet and say okay there you go it will fly itself you just sit there and look good and punch the start button. There are other cars and trucks on the road and animals crossing etc. And what happens if you get a computer glitch or malware?
      We are way too prone to just get the new gadget out there ASAP without serious long term testing and real evaluation of potential risks. It is not like they asked a real driver what they did or did not want or what was even possible. Instead we have an engineer behind the screen. Now if it were an engineer that was a truck driver designing this maybe there would be real insight as to what is needed and what can and cannot be done. They are using us a guinea pigs. Just like pharmaceutical companies .. get it out there ASAP and who cares how many die or what the repercussions are just so it is cheaper for the big boys or so it makes them more profit faster.

      I know and completly agree there are so many factors they don't take in account like weather and other drivers my question is when they were doing this delivery for budweiser did they have a escort which would make it a controlled enviorment and we know that in the real world it does not work that way the reality is if this came to pass and the trucks were out there not only driving them selfs not only would it hurt the driver industry think about the truck stops resturants the accesories shops everything even related to the driver aspect of things would lose their job I think it is a slippery slope towards total world unemployment and I cant see that being a good thing in any way. But the reality is the human factor of trust can the general public trust this vehicle to drive them down the road I know I could not so hopefully that will hold it up

    Here are the levels
    Level 0: The driver completely controls the vehicle at all times.
    Level 1: Individual vehicle controls are automated, such as electronic stability control or automatic braking.
    Level 2: At least two controls can be automated in unison, such as adaptive cruise control in combination with lane keeping.
    Level 3: The driver can fully cede control of all safety-critical functions in certain conditions. The car senses when conditions require the driver to retake control and provides a "sufficiently comfortable transition time" for the driver to do so.
    Level 4: The vehicle performs all safety-critical functions for the entire trip, with the driver not expected to control the vehicle at any time. As this vehicle would control all functions from start to stop, including all parking functions, it could include unoccupied cars.

      Epica124 It will not drive if it is to risky, once it gets better then it will drive in heavy snow. Unlike a humans (who will drive when they are drunk) it will not take risks.

    • @SailorBarsoom
      @SailorBarsoom 6 лет назад

      Currently heavy snow is a problem. So, they aren't currently deployed in heavy snow.
      This is being worked on. When they can drive just fine in heavy snow, then and only then will they be deployed in heavy snow.
      And the same goes for driving rain, sandstorms, high surf advisories, and whatever other conditions anybody cares to bring up. If the vehicle can't handle it (yet), it won't be deployed in it (yet). When it can, it will be.

    They're always careful to say that the human driver is still necessary but the goal is to remove the driver entirely. Drivers cost money, if you talk to any trucker whos worked in the industry long enough they'll tell you about a horrible company they once worked for; how they stiffed them on pay, made them drive during off hours, or some other bad thing. Those types of companies who don't treat the driver well will likely be the one's most willing to cut the driver out to lower their overhead and increase their profit margin.
    And laws made by states and governments will never out weigh the laws of economics which says that in an industry where accidents cost time lives and money and workers are in short supply and recruiters have to dole out huge sums to hire drivers, it will not make sense to not switch to driver-less trucks.

    • @terrencemanning9180

      David Shafer. Itll cost even more to maintain and buy the trucks. If they are shorting drivers wat makes ppl think they wanna pay mors for the trucks . drivers cost thousands thoss trucks will probalt cost millions

    • @germanabraira9650
      @germanabraira9650 5 лет назад

      How many drivers you can afford at a cost of one automated truck? maintenance cost for this trucks is not a cheap thing, the cost of this technology of course it will go down on time (as always) but... although technology will prevail and can´t be stopped. we should think massive automation is something new (in the past was mostly "industrial") now is "day to day jobs". Eventually workforce will be reskilled (or not) into new skills needed. But... a new paradigm effects must be studied in order for this to be controlled. Hey, oil could have been replaced as a resources many years ago, but the collapse of doing so is SO big that they are doing it in a more transitioned way. IT should be done this way in this case. System needs to be changed. New paradigm. is on us if we will transitioned with less pain than others.

    Autonomous trucks with drivers still in the cockpit will be short lived & will just serve as a transition period where people get used to the idea of a fully autonomous fleet.
    Companies will start to situate their delivery facilities right off the motorway. A fleet of autonomous vehicles will then travel from one depot to the next by only travelling on the motorway, it will never need to come close to towns, or minor roads meaning they can just get on with their job without having to negotiate a multitude of human interaction.
    If you are a truck driver for a large company be afraid, your job has an expiry date.

    I have a radar on my current vehicle, it tells me the speed of other vehicles and also slows down my trucks cruise control speed if traffic slows in front of me. The thing is great however, if it sprinkles not even rains it DOES NOT WORK. Can you imagine if the sensors got blocked by rain or debris while out on the road how much havoc these things could do? Drivers may get it easier but they won't be replaced any time soon lol.

    The driver will not be eliminated completely since he or she will still need to navigate tight city streets. Do not get me started on backing into a dock or alley docking. That requires the experience of the driver and his or her reflexes. They have not come up with a system that can do that. Plus the truck needs to be parked in a truck stop at the end of the night which requires backing the truck in a tight parking situation and other trucks being just feet away. That again will require the expertise and skill of a driver. Autonomous driving will have its place, especially when driving in a desolate area in the middle of nowhere where the roads can go straight for miles. It will cut down on driver fatigue since they will not have to hold a steering wheel for the whole time they drive.

    Everyone seems to be worried about losing their job but I think this could prove beneficial to drivers as well what if you could still get paid even double the money you go to bed for 10 hours set the truck for autopilot to drive another 10 hours your autonomous truck will be your co-driver that would be sweet especially with e logs

  • @bigwin2010

    When are they going to test this in a snowstorm with a packed freeway?
    Any modern airplane has auto-pilot but no human being would get on-board a flight with an empty cockpit. These are expensive toys designed to save a few bucks at the expense of the gullibility of the general public. You see a driverless truck going down a straight stretch of highway for a few miles with no incline, no adverse weather conditions, and you think you have a revolutionary idea.

    I want to see this thing when it is 4 or 5 years old with about 900,000kilometres on it, and you are never going to take the driver totally out of the picture as people are freaking out about, you will need a person with the truck to baby sit the load and rig in case of break down.
    I see maintenance costs on this rig out of this world as this truck gets more and more miles on it.

    Driverless Cars, Driverless Trains, Driverless Cabs, Driverless trucks,Driverless Unmanned Aricraft sounds nice, now but will cause huge Job loss, Unemployment, and Labor issues as well as ethical, moral and legal issues in the future. We will be making laws that favor Machines more than Man and eventually this could lead to the end of Humanity.
    I think we need to put curbs on this ASAP.

    Driverless trucks mean; The government who authorize them need fined or replaced. And the manufacturers who build them, should be fined or replaced. UNEMPLOYMENT LINES IN AMERICA ARE NO WAY CONSIDERED THE ANSWER TO SUCCESS. I think the bigger question is, why are they making drones, and driverless machines and computers to to do what we've been doing since the end of WWII. BEING NUMBER ONE IN THE WORLD.

    America doesn't have the road conditions for autonomous trucks, they're really out dated, and in the other hand here's no satellite coverage in many areas in the U.S. Just with those 2 facts we have a gap of 15-20 yrs before they really kick in the high gear to replace all drivers but granted we will be replaced by this machines, we can't stop technology. This is the same argument of the 70s when they started replacing factory workers with higher tech machines like in the auto industry

  • @rogerruiz6616
    @rogerruiz6616 7 лет назад +2

    this is cool idea but not practical. For the reason being that other people on the road are unpredictable a computer can't get it together when it's time to react with a teen driver or drunk driver or an accident right in front of it so what happens when the fuckin truck hit the scale house and has a air leak issue so simple that a seasoned driver could fix...

    • @crazy55rider7
      @crazy55rider7 6 лет назад

      Roger Ruiz I agree but a seasoned driver isn't a certified mechanic or air brake certificate holder.

  • @maxrav1831
    @maxrav1831 7 лет назад

    What happens when the driver gets tired because he's doing FUCK ALL and the system breaks down?
    What happens when a child runs out on the road? Or an old person or a teenager on a mobile phone?
    The first person or family that loses a loved one to this dangerous system, I hope they sue the makers, the transport company, the legislators and the Government for every fucking penny they've got.
    Sure you could make a very convincing argument ( and they do ) that this will reduce human error but what about machine error or tampering?
    I drive a truck and all you do is hit cruse control but you still have to steer and be alert and have FULL FUKING control.

    It may drive on its own but it cannot predict other drivers on the road if it gets too too close to a vehicle that cuts over in front of it it will make a complete stop instead of slowing down.. Complete stop=jack knife. Huge wreck= lives lost . manless planes and drones yes because they are in the air no one to hit

    Its just going to increase accidents, lets say the truck bleeps to "take control" after observing some debris on road the driver thinks its not that serious and if it bleeps like this 7 8 times ,the driver ignores thinking it will just be just be some garbage on road but it comes out to be a human or a car or a bicycle.
    I mean you the truck needs human to take control anytime than why would you buy a truck and a human to double your cost.

    Ontop of that your now asking carries to spend an additional 50k per truck and still pay a operator wage. Noone is going otr for what they pay now let alone a pay cut.

    20 seconds to takeover? It takes less than a second for a big rig to cross the line and kill someone, and you want my hands off the steering wheel? Really?
    Plus the highway in Nevada is such an easy drive, I would feel better if it can drive let's say Pennsylvania.

    Stupid trucks that need more funding from our government. I think he said driver assist many times. And also for some with hearing problems and competency issues. I will explain that he said there are times the driver will have to negotiate and its is actually alot of times and without drivers they are extremely deadly and stupid trucks. Now a 5 to 7 year old should comprehend this. I hope some are having sigh of relief. Deep breathes!!

    It's going to be a while for this is perfected but eventually, this will make truck drivers obsolete in the next thirty to fifty years. Possibly sooner, I only hope there is a plan to retrain the millions who will be unemployed. Capitalism cannot work without consumers. You cannot have consumers with nobody being employed due to automation.
