  • The Fortinet FortiAP 231F is one of the first FortiAPs I can genuinely say I enjoy and am proud of. It is about time Fortinet got something right when it comes to their wireless. As always, thanks to Corporate Armor for sending me the device to unbox and discuss.

Stepped in at the E-series FAP’s without FortiWLC (I work for a MSSP). Customers seem happy with them, and I like the simplicity of managing them.

Currently deploying 431 and 432F's... They are little monsters. Very stable, with signal strength at 50% they cover much more than our old Cisco's.
Image a big hangar covered by 6 Cisco CAP1602E, a single 432F covers all the place with 60% of his power.
I know totally new tech, and Ciscos are old, yes. But it's amazing how we could improve our network with less APs than before.

This is interesting. We've been an Aruba (instant) shop for years but their controllers are horrid to manage. We ended up in a situation where we needed a controller based AP deployment so bought 300 odd 431F's. We absolutely love the management via the Fortigate. Due to COVID we have very few people in the offices but so far so good. We did try Meru as we liked the Single Cell tech but it was horrid, had to put the Meraki's back up. That was just before FN bought Meru. Anyway, thanks for the video Mike. 👍🏻

Would you be able to do a step by step video of setting up Azure 2FA with a fortigate ssl vpn/forticlient?

Is there a more flush mount bracket available? Is there a cover of sorts to hide terminations/sockets?

We had a spare 221E at work and I wanted to test it to see if I really wanted to spend the money on one for home. Performance was fine but the 5ghz would shut off about once a week. Firewall would show channel 0 for 5ghz. Only fix was an AP reboot. Nothing in the logs as to why the heck it was doing that. FW and AP on the latest 6.4 code. I've deployed same model other places with zero issues.

    Really like your videos!
The Forti AP can be managed by FortiGate even if they are in remote locations? (Will have branches with MPLS connections to Dara Center)

It can, as long as it can reach L3 it can build the CAPWAP tunnel

I'm running a single 221E at home with a Fortigate 60E. It's alight, but the Unify was less expensive and possibly faster.

Why do you knock Fortinet Support when you like Fortinet? The support isn’t bad at all?

Would have liked to see you add it to a Fortigate and do some basic setup with a couple VLANs.

Thanks for the video. I'm with you with hating the term "Single pane of glass". It's one of the worst IT marketing terms ever invented.

I haven't felt good about recommending FortiAPs until the F series came out. They are still a little expensive for what they do but the 231F is an awesome AP.
