- The BMW X1 is a premium compact SUV and the smallest off-roader in the brand's range. The term ‘compact’ is a bit deceptive here, however: although it's 15mm shorter than its predecessor, it's also 53mm taller and 23mm wider. It's also styled more like an SUV than the previous model, which just looked like a high-riding 3 Series estate.
The X1 has many rivals to contend with, including the Audi Q3, Mercedes GLA-Class and desirable Range Rover Evoque. It also has to compete with rivals from more mainstream brands, such as the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and Honda CR-V.

+Aristotelis Mitsiou (tkk7406) You two obviously don't understand how these cars are set up. Having RWD or FWD in a small SUV like this is TOTALLY irrelevant, you'll never ever get any advantage by having RWD. In fact, FWD haas an advantage in poor weather and light off-roading

+Narrowc ross You think that it doesn't matter on the X1 now, but then in a few years the 3 series will go FWD, and then in a few more years their M models, just gonna gradually go all FWD like every other manufacturer. When that day comes I'll just start riding a bike.

Lol konako nailed it on the head, gla is NOT a freaking suv. I think they say it is so they can charge more. I've been in one and is so cramped and my forehead touches the freaking ceiling. I mean I'm tall but damn. Is a goddamm hatchback no matter what the sales ppl say. Maybe can pass as a wagon maybe.

Q3 and GLA looks cheep copy of audi and merc but the BMW looks like a baby X5
Bet you any money that if the car didn't have so many options on it, he wouldn't have liked it as much. Especially the interior.

+Constantine Joseph It's too early to be sure. The #Dieselgate scandal rumbles on. So far though, it only affects NOX - something that doesn't affect the pockets of British drivers at the moment!

+notformebeaky Apart from all the respiratory system issues, exposure to high NO2 concentrations during pregnancy causes psychomotor development problems in children. So saying "everything is fine, British drivers' pockets were not affected" is just stupid and irresponsible. As for pristine British air ... well, that depends where you live. London has the highest NOx concentration of all European capital cities.

+Carlos Morales It's a newer car. They're very, very close in terms of our rankings - both earn 4.2 out of 5 stars - but we'd opt for the more recent model. It's really down to personal preference though, so please take both for a test drive!

Excellent review! Of all the videos or indeed articles written about the new X1, only Carbuyer has mentioned that this is the only x-drive BMW which is an "on demand" all wheel drive SUV. All other x-drive vehicles are full time all wheel drive, splitting power 40 - 60 (front - rear), where as this has 100% of the power going to the front wheels until it senses slippage...
Yes, I had to check that as other reviews said it was like the X3, X5 etc,which are mainly rear wheel drive. Having driven one today, it's very good. I've had 9 BMWs over 28 years. Drove 2.0d Xdrive Sport today.

new bmw x1 is basically technical same as bmw series 2 active tourer with slightly different design. Nice review.
Who actually cares about the emissions scandal it's time we cracked down on the MPG rating its worse for your pocket
+greasemonger29 MPG figures are inherently flawed. They're based on old methodology that doesn't take into account modern engines or driving conditions. Use official MPG figures as a comparison tool rather than an indication of the efficiency you're likely to attain - look at reviews for that! We (and other good reviewers) put a lot of effort into testing this part of a car's performance.

I find the seats on this car very narrow when I test drove it. Certainly narrower than my F30.

Please don't do visibility test with GoPro headcam while driving. Looking over your shoulder while driving curvy road is simply not safe. Besides, while vehicle isn't moving you will have a chance to better showcase car's visibility.

The last model was the "ugly duckling" indeed but this one is the coloured crow. So the old x1 was cheap and ugly (not quite, just lower quality trim) but it had a BMW DNA, whereas this one is pretty with good quality details but it's not a BMW, it's a Bmw skin on a Mini body.
AWD isn't just for off-roading. In the rain it provides better handling and with Britain's increasingly volatile whether I think that would be a good thing. But PERMANENT AWD. Not this part-time stuff... Any BMW SUVs have proper AWD?
Why do you always force the bottles in, hit the compartment doors real hard and yank the removable bits and pieces harshly from cars? Does it make you feel better?
this is the only way to determine quality of the thing, is to apply excessive force to it. If it remains undamaged, then it is a good thing.

It's so cute. Why did they have to screw everything for a little bit more interior space? Of course it looks better. It's 2017., plus it also costs more, so they afforded to put better materials. I you want driving pleasure, look somewhere else, except there is no small SUV that handles like the old X1. I would wait for x2.

I was looking at this car to replace my existing BMW 3 Series Touring, when the lease expires next spring. The price though for a new X1or 3 series is getting way to high for my budget. I am now looking at the new 2016 Tiguan or Infinity QX50 as a viable alternative.Whilst some of you are on the subject - almost 30% of all Co2 emissions over NW Europe (UK) included, are generated by the US and Canada. The UK government has been instrumental in getting the US in particular to set new targets to reduce pollution, whilst Canada has opted out of any talks regarding emissions, maybe this will change under a new liberal government...
Please stop talking about how it is siting in the back seat for grow ups. No one buys a car because how comfy the back seat is for grow ups except taxi drivers :-)

Impressive until FWD. But then those that buy an X1 aren't regular BMW owners I'm guessing or BMW owners looking for a plus one for the family fleet.
what will happen to these auto companies once Google, Apple and Tesla increase production of electric cars and driver-less cars. even uber is investing millions in driver-less cars. bmw, ford, mercedes, toyota etc make millions from servicing oil/gas engines.

43 thousand & it's basically a Mini with a Bmw body dropped on top. Also I think they should be trying the standard cars not the over optioned cars the manufacturers wheel out at every launch. Does look better than the old one but it way over priced.
I'm buying this car in 5 months. I would like to get some advice wether I should buy a diesel or petrol version? I do mostly small trips (4 time a day 4 miles) but the problem is I really like to go far in the weekend (trips of about 300 miles) ; I only drive 10 000 miles a year. All advice about interesting options are welcome. I already know the adaptive dampers are essential. Thanks in advance.
Oh wow im surprised they have reclining, sliding rear seats and easy access buttons for folding the seats down. These features weren't included in the 2017 X5 smh..
So the 8-speed auto actually has a manual style gear-knob, or did I get it wrong? Didn't newer BMWs have an electronic gear selector?

naah..this means that the audi q3 is the better looking..better handling and price wise cheaper..still it may be a bit smaller but it has a better ground clearance and at the end you get that premium audi interior quality...
I recently got an 2019 sdrive, petrol.
Nice car. But it IS a firm ride, and my wife and I found it quite bumpy, not so smooth. Also fuel economy is a bit meh. 42.mpg.
My wife and I commute to London for our respective jobs, around 60 mile round trip. My wife works five days a week. So she drives the BMW. And I have to say on a full tank you would just scrape 5 days… which makes no sense.
That’s only 300 miles.
My Audi A3 can do around 7 to 10 days. I can drive to London and back 60 miles on a full tank and that fuel gauge won’t even move. It’s Petrol.
The X1 is much bigger than the Audi

I didn't really find the old X1 ugly. The new definitely looks much better. It is taller and it looks like a real small SUV. The old one looks like an estate.

I wonder if its better to get the X1 or the 3 series GT. I heard their height difference is small and that the X1 is not essentially an SUV. I still rate this car though, its a pity in South Africa there is no Xdrive model with manual transmission.
The o e I tested it had cheap plastic , no leather and loud diesel engine. So I don't see why get this "no mans car" when You can get a 3series estate.
The price is irrelevant to BMW buyers. These will sell like hot cakes.

Because most RWD BMW owners don't know or care that their cars are RWD, it saves weight, makes the car roomier and drives as well as a Mini (which is a very nice thing indeed).
