It’s likely (at least in part) due to the fact that the English voice actor died. I know that his passing threw a massive spanner in the works for the show

I want to see more of how Macaque and Wukongs friendship was. You can’t see a lot of it here, but there is subtext. Like that image of them fighting together, the old drawing set outside Wukongs house, or when Macaque didn’t want to betray Wukong like the others. Even during the feast scene, Wukong was excited and though he didn’t listen to Macaques warning, he did notice Mac frowning at the end which caused him to stop smiling for a moment before he reassured Mac with promises of their future together. So assured both of them were that they’d always have each other. Let them be friends again.
And Macaque seems to be the little brother in their dynamic that Wukong brings everywhere lol Ok but seriously,the way he acts in the brotherhood scenes looks like an introvert that doesn't want to be there.He seems like he's there just because of Wukong.And it's ironic that despite being in the higher position,it seems like Macaque is the one with common sense.Which makes me imagine that he's also his highest advisor.If they're making the part where the decision to go search for immortality is advised by his advisor canon,Macaque can be the one telling him that or the one asking him to reconsider it.

Agree seems like he’s keeping his distance after the defeat of Lady Bone but I bet in the next season we’ll see more of him again eventually
