Mountain House has my vote hands down. I requested a sample from them And they sent me via FedEx two full size entrees. One breakfast, and the other dinner.
hi everyone ,if anyone else is searching for wilderness survival foods try Franaar Spies Control Formula ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my colleague got cool results with it.
35 years ago I was on unemployment in Hawaii and had a roommate move out so I had to pay all the rent. Very little money left over. A mustard sandwich with salt and pepper tasted like a T-Bone steak.. Being hungry once in your life is very educational..
In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, I found out that the canned pasta stuff my grandkids always wanted to wasn't bad. On day 9 is was actually VERY delicious !
I've been eating Mountainhouse for years back packing and mountaineering. It all tastes great when you're back in three days from anywhere and you're hungry. After two weeks, the longest I was out, it starts to get old but it's filling and nourishment.
Sounds like you should start rotating some of it out when you can find deals on new. But 38 yrs, freeze dried, unbroken seal, cool dry storage it still good.
Like the other commenters said, in an emergency they are all tens. I wished you gave some reasons for your ratings ie: lacked flavor, texture was weird etc. No matter, thanks for doing this. 👍
I second that! Assigning some random arbitrary number doesnt mean a thing. Give some rationale. I imagine the response is this was just an example of what we should by spending a wad of cash on a 14 day supply.
Your pressure canned goodies looked the best. Fun hobby too and they are good for at least 15 years...and you can count the ingredients with the digits on 1 hand...and reuse the jar. ..:) great vid.
EXACTLY the type of review I was looking for. shared with my friends. I really like the way you edited the video as well, one on to the next and no filler. Thank you.
I started with singles from walmart @ $6 per unit. They were pretty good although I found that they need some salt and pepper for a better flaver but over all they work pretty good. I also found if you stir it a second time after the 9m and reseal and let sit an additional few moments it resolves the water issue.
I ordered free samples from the various companies. I ended up liking the Mountain House the best. I too found that you need less water but more cook time. Great video
AHP: Yes, less water and more cook time, I agree. I eat this stuff and I have been burning through about one #10 can every two weeks. I went ahead and ordered up 270 cans of it and will be doing a video on how to buy in bulk pretty soon. Thanks!
I've eaten plenty of these, there's no way that what Mt. House considers a serving will satisfy an adult. So, expect to half the number of servings advertised. So, in reality, that's about $5 per serving, figure lunch and dinner each day would be around $300 for a month supply. That's about double the expense for a similar supply of typical canned goods. The real benefit of Mt.House is its incredibly long shelf life.
I don't care for Mountain House, I like Thrive Life, However I can't afford it. I can't have dairy, or poultry. I live on $2.00 a day, $2.50 a meal wouldn't cut it for me when my entire budget on social security is under $1200. a month. I have oatmeal for breakfast, with fruit, or scrambled eggs. and wonderful tea from Smith Teamakers, Lunch is soup and saltines and fruit, or salad and 1/2 a sandwich, dinner is very light, because i'm 72, I don't get nearly as hungry as I once did. at night I might have some applesauce after dinner, but dinner is usually leftovers.
Chili Mac is my favorite with cheese sauce in it. It will give you massive heart burn, and the day after is sometimes horrible, but if you add the cheese, it help with this.
As much as I appreciate your editing chops, it was pretty long for what should have been a simple how to conduct your own taste test of freeze dried foods. If this was about the actual food itself I'd say assigning a random number with no rationale as to how you came to the conclusion(s) is arbitrary at best and is about as effective as the Chevy vs Ford debate. I will agree that Mountain House has what I would consider the best track record out there. Considering they were able to push their 25 year shelf life to 30 for the sheer fact of actual testing; they've been around since 1969 and have ample caches of products to test. They also use real meat vs others that use TVP, basically a soy product and 'other flavors'. The one thing I wish they did was make each component separate and then combine them into the packages. It would improve the flavor, although theirs does test pretty well. As you found firsthand the amount of water is something they need to dial in. One thing that will improve the final product is to follow the instructions when it comes to stirring it right after you add the water, when it says so, as well as if it needs stirred at some point between then and when it should be ready, also if that's what the directions call for. One more thing would be in regards to personal taste. A lower sodium count would be great. I always keep a number of seasonings and spices on hand in my camping and emergency bags.
forget the pouch its a waste because contents stay in pouch if you want every last drop just pour the contents into the boiled pot put a lid on it let it rest off heat like you do when cooking rice. Then use spatula to clean out pot in dish or bowl. Out in the wild no problem use the pouch.
Another great video, thanks for sharing. Why did you decided on Mountain house? So many other companies out there are making freeze dried food supplies. Patriot, Legacy, Ready store, Essentials..... .Just wondering. Im trying to decide which one I'll go with. Thank you
I stocked up on organic canned black, red, and garbanzo beans, also rice and canned tomatoes with green chilies. I don't pay much attention to expiration dates on canned food. If it doesn't smell or taste right, I won't eat it. However, it's a lot cheaper than the prices on dehydrated meals....there is a lot of huge price gouging going on. It's totally disgusting and should be punishable by law, to triple prices on food in a pandemic, where there is an economic crisis and people going hungry because they can't afford the huge prices for decent food. I just tried to order fresh meat from a business that claims to be growing and adding on stores in the surrounding area. They are even opening a bakery in July. Their food is exceptionally good, but I wasn't able to order, as there was a catch..it had to be an event with several people, like a business giving a party for the elite. I wanted an order of chicken thighs for myself, as I live alone and don't have a business. WTF is going on!!!!!! I was willing to pay $12.00 for a lb. of chicken thighs, which is double what I usually paid. Who let the vampires out? They are sucking our blood, but they won't get mine. Are you dumping all the contents into the bowl, or is there more food left in the bag? Intended, verses realistic, serving sizes would be valuable to know.
Most of the Mountain House #10 cans will last for 30 years. My canned stuff from my garden will last for years but loses its nutritional value as time goes on. I plan to eat the garden canned food two years back in order to always have a one year supply of it. As for regular canned foods: According to the USDA, high-acid canned foods like tomatoes and citrus fruits, will keep for up to 1½ years. Low-acid canned foods, that's pretty much everything else, including vegetables, meat, and fish will last for up to 5 years. I would guess that it’s probably longer than that. Thanks!

Hey, well I’m late to the party here, anyway, this was a GREAT review and we didn’t have to listen to chewing noises😬, the only thing I would add is commentary on the taste and texture.
J, I don't care for chewy noises either. I did not make to many comments on taste and such as the main point is the method that I used to discover what to buy in bulk. I think folks have to try them for themselves before investing too much money on stuff you may not even like. Thanks!

I think we should plan for 1500-2000 calories/day depending on the situation. Breakfast skillet is 400 calories/serving. So, maybe plan for 1-2 servings of Mountain House per day and supplement with other stored foods from the garden plus vitamins. Thanks!

Great info, thanks, i like the Mexican rice and chiken the best, i also tried most of them, i didn't try the breakfast or mac n cheese.
Breakfast Skillet is my favorite.
Do any of these big cans have toilet paper in them? 😆
Looks like eating after the apocalypse will be a very expensive affair. These go for like $8 a bag I heard from prepper channel.
They typically run about $5/serving. I bought mine in bulk at about $2.30/serving. ruclips.net/video/--viVTjvhG8/видео.html
Thanks!
Can you use cold water if you are out of electricity?
I think so but it definitely won't be as good. Just as healthy tho. :)
I just tried the breakfast skillet Saturday and I think it had way too much onions in it
I eat the breakfast skillet all the time and I have not even noticed the onion in it. I'll look for that next time I have it. Thanks

Any info on calories? Trying to survive on 300 calories per day is deadly.
I think we should plan for 1500-2000 calories/day depending on the situation. Breakfast skillet is 400 calories/serving. So, maybe plan for 1-2 servings of Mountain House per day and supplement with other stored foods from the garden plus vitamins. Thanks!
