Turning Large Logs into a Spiral Staircase for the Silo | Renovation Pt. 17

- We didn’t want to blow the budget (again) buying a spiral staircase so we decided to make our own out of hand milled logs. Never trying anything like this before, we checked out some pictures online which made it look easy but this spiral had our heads turning. We somehow made it work and had time to complete a few other projects for the silo.
I saw their video on TikTok and now here I am finishing their other videos because I am so amazed with these brothers! Kudos guys. You turned that boring-looking silo into an amazing man cave 💪.
Thank you for watching! We’ll keep the projects coming!
Me too!
Same. First on Tiktok

That staircase is absolutely ridiculous. Great work guys!
Thanks!
As an architect student, i am absolutely loving this. Every detail it's amazing 😁
Thank you! We love architecture and almost went to school for it as well but engineering called our name a little bit more! Thanks for watching
I'm an architecture professor and I don't like how OSHA is ignored. Also, to keep the last step so small is weird. There had to be be some plateau.
And as a student of Arch. You should know that their spiral staircase is not legal. No landing to top of staircase.
Doing this by “the wing of our seat” 😂 that an epic combination of flying by the seat of our pants and winging it.
Beautiful work and skilled craftsmanship!
These guys literally SAY they're not skilled craftsmen.
Ya I definitely got those two sayings mixed up in my head! Thanks for watching!
This is the video that started the whole thing.I watched this video and then I binge watched all thirty two of your videos. Today. You guys are awesome.
Thank you very much, we appreciate it and we will keep the projects coming!
So glad this came across my feed. I can't stop watching. You guys are very talented. (And not bad on the eyes if I do say so myself. Anyone agree?)
BEST PROJECT SERIES EVER!!!! Nothing on YT can compare! 😉 😊 You guys are awesome! I would hire you for sure!
Thank you very much! we appreciate it!
i think all these corners on the steps and the stair rail is a headbanger ready to come.
That is an awesome project, looks awesome guys. For the heavy stone step you can use ice so you don’t smash your fingers and it slides around easy to get it into place.
Great stuff guys, got one possible pro tip and that is when you're making the 2nd or 3rd cut of a section of trunk on the band saw (starting at 3:40) you can turn that log 180 degrees and put that flat cut side down on the band saw cut table/platform, then you're much closer to a good 90 degree angle (what you want) along the resulting corner/edge where the two cut sides of the log meet.
So, I'm saying to myself... "Who makes a 53 minute video on RUclips? " .... then ..... " Who watches a 53 minute video on RUclips?" ...So, turns out the answers are the brothers ..... and me. Holy cow! What a project? I cannot fathom the price tag. Such stunning work! Keep it up. Be careful. Teamwork makes the dream work.
Thank you very much! Glad you’re enjoying it!
Шикарная лестница. 🪜 Благодарю за информацию.
the Project gives new meaning to the word "MANCAVE"
Hahaha its sure does, thanks for watching!
Amazing carpentry and ingenious stairs you Guys deserve a medal for all that heavy lifting. Magnificent 👍👍👍
Thank you! We did enjoy the assembly a lot even with all the heavy lifting, it felt like we were kids again with legos!
Watching all this hard work has tired me out! Great job guys…nap time for me!
Thank you!
Can’t believe all the progress, creativity, and hard work you have put into this build. It’s so fun to watch you guys work. The railings are a great feature and I like how you carried the same design outside.
Thank you, we appreciate it!
Great team work, more work than I would tackle, I'll stick to building Furniture ( 38 year's)
Thank you, furniture building is something we enjoy as well but just don’t have as much time for it as we would like to!
Keeps getting better and better. Fantastic work.
Thank you!
You guys never cease to surprise and amaze me with your creativity and skills. The spiral stairs look great. The over-sized rebar is genius. I can't wait for more vids!
Thank you! We will keep them coming!
Beautiful, i have never had a house my own, it's so nice that i could live there :)
Although I’m relatively new to your posts, I’ve gone back and watched this entire build. While the roof on the silo is absolutely amazing, I am truly intrigued by your circular stairs solution. Like everything else I’ve seen so far, it is simple, elegant, and abundantly sturdy. Can’t wait for your next post. Godspeed!
Thank you very much! We love to try new stuff and learn new things along the way, thanks for watching!
Awesome jenga stairs!!
Love the attention to detail: putting plastic on the siding. I always tape things off, put plastic around posts, etc. Most guys I see slop concrete on everything. Good work.
Absolutely great job guys, the design ideas and craftsmanship in such a unique structure is incredible.
Thank you, much appreciated!
This has been amazing to watch, so satisfying. The use of cracked wood scares the living daylights out of me but the bowties are a nice touch. Great work you guys can't wait for the next video!
Thank you! A lot of our lumber tends to split when we dry it in our kiln but we over engineer our lumber for the project so there is no real concern on the integrity and we also stabilize cracks with dowels, bow ties, and bolts, thanks for watching!
nice staircase:) Keyboard warrior from Germany here: I know that impact drives are a way bigger thing in america than in europe, but when using longer screws the proper tool would be a normal (powerful) driver. The screws are not going in at 39:47 because of all the torsion (which isn´t a problem, when applying constant torque). You did the obvious thing and went for the next bigger impact, problem is that all the energy has to go somewhere and you are at risk damaging the screws, have them break.
The dude in the red hoody went from a life gaurd to a lumber gaurd.
Fabulous! Great vision for this old silo.
Thanks!
I love the stair case, it’s so beautiful and really came out well! I especially love the look of the bow ties and wish every step had one added one even if it didn’t really need it.
Thank you, much appreciated!
Absolutely loved the earlier roof construction. Something bothers me about the spiral staircase but don’t quite know what. I have done similar things over my 77 yrs and they stood the test of time but they “felt right”....so I’m 15mins into this...let’s see...if you uncover a law or principle of physics you are fighting.....🙏🏾
Thank you and love the feedback!
That was good. Camera work, content and job site were very good. I will definitely watch your content. Thanks
Thank you! We’ll keep the content flowing!
that last door slam was gnarly.
This is a great project, can't wait until the next video.
Thank you, we will keep the videos coming!
I’m blown away by this project! U guys are very talented , well done!
Thank you!
In the UK you have to have a Minimum Inner Going 120mm, Minimum Centre Going 145mm and a Maximum Outer Going 350mm on a sprial stair case.
Where else is the UK going? 🤬
This is a most interesting video to spend time watching. Great ideas & workmanship.
Thank you!
Most codes will not allow windows in a staircase like that unless they are at least certified tempered glass or laminated safety glass or have substantial guards. Imagine someone loses a step and then falls right through and out the window onto the broken glass.
I'm worried about the big square openings in the floors with no railings. I see some electrical violations, small stuff, not life threatening.
Is this a customers property or their property?
Their parents did a good job raising them, they should be proud.
@@bigredc222 Oh yeah, put a foot through one of those and you could snap it off easily. Stairs like this take more forethought than just using identical treads. Each tread should have been a different length and gone all the way out to be scribed to the wall.
Hey guys, what an amazing job! You are a complete team. I haven’t even seen this on National Geographic. We are eagerly waiting for more beautiful videos. Keep it up; your work is impeccable and truly outstanding.❤
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying the content and we will keep sending more your way!
Absolutely beautiful, well done guys, its coming together so beautifully, in awe!!
Thank you! We appreciate it!
Prolly hundreds of peeps have mentioned. But if you chamfer the inside corner of the tread so when you walk up the staircase you will avoid hitting your shoulder and it’ll make it seem like you got more space then you took off. My thought. Also I agree with the youngling and to the same to that handrail post.
Great suggestion and this is definitely something we may try on the next one if we do it again or longer treads! Thanks for watching!
FANTASTIC. Another video. LOVE your videos and really excited to see the staircase come to life.
Thank you!
thats a very goid idea boys, you saved money& time men.
Thanks!
Impressive work. Gorgeous design.
Thanks!
The stair and the railing are excellently made and beautiful. Great job guys.
Thank you!
After seeing the compressed reel, found and binged all 17 parts. This is absolutely amazing work, looks incredible, can’t wait to see additional “episodes”. Also, as others have noted, excellent video production / production editing. Top class work guys!
Thank you, we appreciate it and love hear when people binge our older episodes after discovering our channel!
Hello from Moosomin,Saskatchewan,Canada you have great videos and great at communicating. Thanks for sharing.
I like it, I think it looks great! I was hoping that you would of countersunk the nut on the staircase though.
Thank you, we currently left it exposed in case it needs adjusting over time
shouldve added a landing on top of those stairs, like wdym a small slab is the landing?
We did a lot of debating on making the landing bigger but because of the way we enter the staircase from the second floor, it felt natural with just the one step, thanks for watching!
You guys go far & above!!! Great work. My contractor sucks.
Looking great guys!
I agree with what others have said with the rails, make the balusters vertical. Pain in the ass to redo, but better in the long run.
Make a 3 piece table/bar that extends or collapes - NICE STAIRS !!👍👍👍👍
Dig it, very manly stuff going down.
I remain gob-smacked at this project. I wish I were the lucky owner...
Thanks and much appreciated!
The stacked blocks looks good but you should have placed a nut or an anchor under each tread. Depending on the wood species and the grain direction, the wood can be expected to shrink from 4 to 12 percent as it goes from green to dry. In a 9 foot height, you can expect the wood at the center line to shrink between 4.3 and 13" inches.
Hi, We do kiln dry our lumber before installing and managed to get these slabs around 15% which is the rough EMC inside the silo, I sure they may shrink slightly more but nothing too significant, thanks for watching!
Gotta teach the kid how to use a ROS
@52:34 to help the esthetics of that 4x4 post just hanging there and looking unfinished, you could take a piece of that rebar and weld some plate steel sqares to them so that you could mount it vertically to one of the treads below. It would make a nice hand rail and finish the corner off nice like it was intentional.
Thank you for the feedback! We are actually working on some handrails this week with some rebar and steel plates to mount to the stair treads so looks like we are on the same page! Thanks for watching!
Beautiful work!
Thanks!
29:07 I've been finishing concrete since 97 and I've never seen someone strap themselves into a pair of sliders 😂
Good evening from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Great job on the spiral staircase. 🇺🇸
Thank you! Cheers from Wisconsin!
7:03 lmao the kid is just smiling away
Haha ya he has a little too much fun working sometimes!
Hope you guys know that y'all are amazing, the silo looks pretty good now because of your hard work and genius ideas. Keep it up!
Thank you!
A lot of work in this video ! The results are fantastic !! Congrats
Thank you!
The staircase is awesome ... I sure hope it passed inspection!
Railings are coming soon, stay tuned, thanks for watching!
Stunning staircase. You guys are smashing it out of the park.
Thank you!
Awesome project!
The stairs are beautiful! Please for children’s safety add a handrail that meets code. Also disassemble the current railings and add metal tubing over the rebar so if a child climbs on the horizontal rebar it will spin so they can’t climb up and fall over.
Love the way you push through even when things go wrong!
Very creative work but i think the wood is not wide enough for foot rest and stability olso your mid post is not strong enough use one half inch steel tube i think its better,im not expert only from my view other videos from YT and a little experienced. Good Job Guys👍
That Staircase is a real work of art that can only be achieved by tremendous patience and skill.
I like the rails, they are very rustic, yet sleek at the same time.
You are all doing a phenomenal job.
P.S. The concrete Patio is fabulous. 🤙🏼🙂🤙🏼❤️
Like 1187 is now up to say thankyou very much for sharing.
Have a great Week and take care, gentlemen. 🤙🏼🙂🤙🏼❤️
Thank you very much, we appreciate it and glad you're enjoying the project!
@Worzalla_Brothers. My pleasure, Sir. 🤙🏼🙂🤙🏼❤️
It's been a dream of mine to build a house in a silo, you guys are rocking this one! Looking forward to the next video.
Thank you and stay tuned!
This project is cool as all get out!!!!! Great job fellas!!!!
Thank you, We appreciate it!
You guys are doin a beautiful job, everything looks incredible!!!
Thanks, much appreciated!
Great work!
It's much easier to drive big lags with a normal drill instead of an impact.
I honestly thought you guys were doing a steel spiral staircase. So when you started, I was like Matt and skeptical too. But the finished result is perfect.
Thank you!
By welding some supports to fix on the side of the first metal roof, and bolting big wood brackets around the tower, you could shelf a deck all around it and put a door instead of the fixed window. And put glass and reclaimed windows above to grow plants.
You can also replicate the centerpiece of the carpentry twice, turn them updown to make thick chandeliers, and fix them with a copper painted chain or a pipe passing through the central empty square of the floors.
The base of the supports of the bannister needs an angle cut to look more organic.
+ steampunk stuff (copper pipes)
A straighted steel chain bolted on each side can probably be welded to make it stiff. Bolted on a piece of furniture....
Powder coat that rebar black to match The trim on the house don’t be lazy.
You are doing a great job! Everything is fantastic. I would however carve the all the corners of the staircase and blend them in a little bit. But I guess it's more rustic this way.
Thank you! Ya I think if we built these again, we would do a little redesigning on the inside edges but for this project it ended up turning out very nice, thanks for watching!
Absolutely amazing video
Discovered your channel, watched one video and I'm hooked.
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying them and we'll keep them coming!
No job ever goes right until a blood sacrifice has been made to the Green Man, guardian of the living forest.
Hold the ladder !
Awesome build😎
Thanks!
Wow that's really looking good now keep up the good work 🎉
Thanks!
@@Worzalla_Brothers looking forward for the next upload 🙂
Thank for taking the time to create such great content.
Another very entertaining and informative channel is “Wilson Forest Lands”.
Thank you! We will check them out and keep producing!
I wonder if it would have looked better if you rounded the end that was in the center, so it looked more like a pillar around the threaded rod
Thanks for the suggestion! that is something we would definitely look into if we did this again!
superb build guys
Thanks!
Great work guys, this is solid hard work.
Thank you!
Well I'm invested 😊 waiting for the next episode
Glad you’re enjoying the content, stay tuned, we have more in the way!
Absolutely Awesome Work!!!
Thank You!
I'm so going to make those filling the interiors with rigid foam so they're not dangerously heavy...
That is interesting, boxing them out and filling with foam for sound to make them sound solid, great Idea!
Fantastic job guys. 👏👏👏👏
Thank you!
At first I thought that was a bear cub behind you then I realized it was a dog
Probably the same dog that walked over the wet concrete. How annoying when that happens.
Great job guys, I liked the part were you guys where pushing the steps in place & the edit was cut sped up and you were all 3 bopping it into place with your feet , that was hilarious.
I hope the window next to the outside handrail and maybe the wood siding doesn't endup with rust pits later when the grinder shaving from cutting off the excess bolts on the base oxidizes. FYI in the future always cover anything that the grinder shavings will hit. Live and lurne is what life is all about.
Hahaha Thank you, ya those stone were definitely a challenge to move by hand and thanks for the input on grinder shavings, we will definitely take that into consideration in the future!
ou should have a DPM (damp proof membrane) below the concrete to prevent ground water penetrating the concrete and damaging it.
Bro keep cooking 🔥🔥🔥
Every minute you're late, you get ro work for free. Not all employers are so generous. I haven't seen such generosity since prison lol
Again, awesome work. I love it .
Thank You!
You could put a skim of white glue on those long screws to lube them, but be careful not to strip cause they will spin easier.
Noted, Thanks for the tip!
It's maybe a little delicate for the look you're going for, but some kind of carved or lathed finial or something at the bottom of that railing support would probably soften the edges and make it a lot less likely to jab someone with a corner someday, plus it would look more finished, so I'd really recommend doing that. I'm sure you can come up with a way to make it both rugged and whimsical, with smooth enough curves to be safe. Maybe an owl motif, or something, just for fun.
Thank you for the suggestions! we may adjust it slightly with a chamfer of some sort as we work on some of the finish work and lower railings. Thanks for watching!
I hope this is your parent’s house. I will give it to you, you guys work hard but you have a lot to learn. What was the moisture content of those treads? Those stairs are not safe. Hope that is tempered glass in those windows. That rebar railing should look real good when it rusts, should give it a nice patina. The rebar in the concrete needs to overlap 24 inches.
Hi, We do have lots to learn! We do kiln dry our lumber and managed to get these slabs down to about 15% which is about the EMC inside the silo. Stairs are not fully complete, we still have to install custom curved handrails going down (stay tuned!) We are also aware that all glass needs to be tempered that is less 24" AFF or steps. This 1" rebar comes with a coating directly from the factory so it should hold up well but we can always add a finish later on if needed. We did add some more rebar to the patio for increased overlap after we drilled into the surrounding foundations and slid the rebar in, Thanks for watching!
That’s unique!
“By the wind of our seat”?
Dope stairs tho!
haha ya I got the saying mixed up there, Thanks!
