@@d.a.w.975 my statement is based on cultural impact on Rock N Roll. EVH might have been more technical, but JH influenced a lot of future axemen like EVH to pick up a guitar.
Jesus Christ that guitar tone on the intro. No wonder Dave Davies resented Van Halen's cover so much. It must've been hard for the Kinks after this version was released.
one of those rare events when the remake bests the original... sometime later, Davies conceded Van Halens version of " You really got me" was the better version...
We witnessed our Hendrix for anyone over age 40. I am 54 and have been a fan of Ed's since 1978. As someone else said yesterday on another Van Halen YT channel, "Don't be sad Ed is gone, be happy that he was here....and be happy that we were fortunate enough to witness history in the making...." RIP Ed.
First time I heard this song was in 1964. By the Kinks. Great song, I thought. 1978, 24 years old when I heard It again. Blew me away and brought back all the memories. It has since then been the standard of a cover; if you cannot do better while honoring the original, don't bother. Ray Davies and the Kinks should be so proud of what Van Halen did. Van Halen in no way diminishes the Kinks! R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen!
This is such a great song and I love both the original Kinks and VanHalen's cover version. However I would have loved to have been around when the Kinks came out this. It would have blown me away. This song was so way ahead of it's time and really set the standard for years and years to follow.
Howdy, young ones. This old-timer had to chime in and make something clear. The Kinks came out with this song in 1964 ... way, way before Van Halen even formed. Actually, I saw The Kinds do this live in 1976. Totally amazing. Personally, I believe Van Halen's version is quite superior; however, I still LOVE The Kinds original. Make no mistake: The Kinks could REALLY rock. Van Halen had a heavier vibe which I personally love! Both versions are totally amazing in their own way. Love them both, actually. Peace & Joy
When this came out in '78 I knew what I'd been missing. I think it was a cover that bested the original. There was rock but this was a whole new kind of rock, all due to Eddie Van Halen's sound and prowess. So sad he's gone.
When kmet radio in Los Angeles played this I said Who and the heck are these guys ? I was hooked had to find that album blew me away God bless you Eddie..
my brother and i bought this album as kids, we'd grown up obsessed with aerosmith and kiss before this - when we put this album on we jumped around the room like crazy people LOL ! we were freaking out
I think this is probably the best song Van Halen could have ever covered. The first song to feature distortion covered by the pinnacle of heavy, distorted, over the top playing.
The fact that Eddie used to be married to the amazing actress Valerie Bertinelli, makes me so happy and their son Wolfgang Van Halen is just so awesome
In my humble opinion Van Halen torched so many cover songs in which the original band couldn’t come close to their version mainly due to the virtuoso of EVH! Their early live versions kicked major ass with the band jamming! Over the years I guess they weren’t as hungry and just ran through the songs and Dave as we all know didn’t give 2 shits about actually singing but strutting.

GH Van Halen fucked it all up because they made You Really Got Me like 2 setlists behind Eruption. which by the way is the LAST SONG. they should've saved this song until you beat eruption, and then make this like a credits/encore song. Like through the fire and flames in gh3.
A few songs I first heard as covers ended up being by The Kinks. Now if there's a song I don't know the origin of, the joke is that The Kinks did it first.
NinjaBluefyre. The Kinks wrote and performed more than 300 original songs, many of which were indeed covered by other artists as diverse as Sia and the Stranglers. There is an excellent website called "Dave Emlen's unofficial Kinks' website" where among other things you can see a list of all the Kinks' songs that have been covered by other artists.
