    As an Armada kid who’s now firmly in the age range that’s prime for nostalgia bait, I’m loving all these new figures. I know Megs isn’t nearly as featured as the original, but just having a modern figure of possibly my favorite Megatron design that can pose and look great with Legacy Armada Optimus fulfills my needs. It makes me go “oh, this is what the G1 and Beast Wars kids feel”

    As a "bitter old G1 fan" who was an adult who bought Armada toys with my adult man money a part of me can't help but love the new Armada Megs BECAUSE it strips out all the play features that annoyed me at the time. That said the older wiser me can totally recognize the appeal of the missing play features and how that makes the toy less in certain ways.

      The way I see it, I feel like both toys are trying to achieve such drastically different things that the only thing they really have in common is that they are toy renditions of Armada Megatron. Like, the OG was this big loud gimmick filled brick meant to make kids circa 2002 go crazy, while Legacy is like the classy, dressed up, adult collector oriented version of Armada Megs, more suited to looking good and posing well and making 20-somethings go "Woah sick I remember Armada" than really being an engaging gimmick filled plaything. Its like comparing the old Kenner Aliens toys to the current NECA Aliens toys. I suppose the fun gimmick factor is lost when you make a collector grade toy of something that was once a gaudy 90's gimmick toy like Armada Megatron or the mantis Alien, but for people who grew up with those things, it's cool to have an upscaled, collector ready, highly posable version of that weird toy you loved as a kid.

      The way I see it, the legacy toy is meant to be a modern figure of the character from the anime, rather than an updated version of the toy. I love it because we've never gotten a more posable figure that's this accurate to the character's design in animation. Same goes wirh the other legacy armada figures.
      They're both absolute wins but for different reasons, this new one appeals more to people who were fans of the fiction surrounding armada

      This is kind of how I feel about most of the UT and Armada and Energon especially, but in my mind those toys weren't great figures (most of em anyway; Unicron, Red Alert, and small Optimus are exceptions) but they're all fantastic toys because they're fun to handle and they just look nice and unique. Whereas current day figures are all about the poses (mostly) but a bit dry otherwise. Both of those things are actually fine imo (it clearly takes a Haslab Star Saber type endeavor to really achieve both) but I do feel like the current Armada figures still feel like they could do a few things better; it's one of the reasons I'm not as enamored with the new Armada Optimus as others are and maybe I SHOULD be. Armada Prime was my gateway Prime and stayed my favorite design. So with the new one I really do get that GEEWUN sentiment (but with Armada) where I can't help but see all the the things I dislike about it as clearly or more clearly than the things I like even though I'm thrilled that it exists.

      Unfortunately it's 1 step forward and 1 step back. He has knees (and ankles) but loses the same shoulderpad articulation that requires an addon kit to fix.
      I swear the current design team just HATES shoulderpads that rotate with shoulders. They seem to avoid it like the plague. Maybe I'm exaggerating the impression. I only remember the new Laser OP mold suffers from the same flaw.

    I don't have really any Armada figures (Demolisher I think is the only one I have), but I gotta appreciate how much they were engineered to be toys. Big, chunky, with lots of cool features. Articulation's been sacrificed, but I can't say it's really missed when there are so many other cool things to play with on the figure.

  • @MellowGaming
    @MellowGaming 6 месяцев назад +13

    This has been my gripe with a few of the modern lads. Like, the figures are nice but they keep making me realise that what I liked about them years ago was that the toys were fun and filled with gimmicks. Had the same reaction to Kingdom Optimus Primal. Although I really like Legacy Leo Prime and that could be because I've never sampled the original. I guess sometimes it's better to have never heard the original so you can appreciate the cover act for what it is.

    • @JoleneBlake
      @JoleneBlake 6 месяцев назад +5

      The thing for me is that the Legacy Beast Wars guys are at least trying to do something different, with show inspired robots and realistic beast modes. Legacy Armada is just trying to faithfully recreate extremely toy-accurate designs that were built entirely around gimmicks, but without the gimmicks.

    • @daltonwilliams1723
      @daltonwilliams1723 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@JoleneBlakeno. They’re trying to recreate the anime designs, which is something the toys kinda sucked at in the armada toyline.

    • @JoleneBlake
      @JoleneBlake 6 месяцев назад +5

      @@daltonwilliams1723 The anime designs in Armada are extremely toy-accurate. They have hinges and mini-con ports on the character models. The only real changes are massaging the proportions, but they are still designs built entirely around toy gimmicks.

    • @AwesomeMooseSmile
      @AwesomeMooseSmile 5 месяцев назад

      @@JoleneBlakeHere's the thing though, there is definitely a valid purpose to the new armada toys, and that's that a lot of transformers fans didn't like armada due to the gimmicks, which a lot see not as the main appeal, but the main hindrance with the toys, because 9 times out of 10 the gimmick hindered the toys drastically in ways like articulation, engineering, robot mode design, or sometimes all of the above. There are plenty of fans who view the armada line as not even a fun toyline at all, because while the gimmicks are neat, a lot of the play appeal that transformers is known for is often absent in these toys because of the gimmick. That's the appeal of the new ones, to give those designs and characters the justice that many felt was needed so they can finally have the engineering, articulation, sculpting, and overall play value that many felt were absent in the originals. It's fine to feel like the new stuff isn't as fun, but remember, a majority of the fanbase finds the fun in transformers in many different ways that you may not consider. Besides the new stuff still has the core gimmicks, like the axelzooka, starscream's flip out cannons, prime's actual mase mode and super robot, and megatron's tummy cannon (also the tidal wave combination), they're just manual now but still satisfying to do.

  • @isaacsussman5632
    @isaacsussman5632 6 месяцев назад +8

    I think the reason the update lacking the features is more of a bummer than it is in most Generations style toys is that its not actually normal for Chug to remove things. We usually get accessories or new versions of gimmicks just changed to fit the modern designs. The sideswipe mold still has an accessory that looks like his spring missle, Skytread doesnt have springs but still can do the duocon thing, primal has his wrist guns and multiple gorilla stances, even Armada starscream can pull his thrusters foreward and has the starsabre molded to look like minicons. But Legacy Megatron doesnt come with the knife, the spring bits are articulated but flimsy, they totally coulda had the cage thing. Most generations toys have whats necessary to at least emulate the original visually and this one cant even give us a Leader 1. This Megatron is what i think people who absolutely dispise Generations think the whole line is.

    • @Hydrogue
      @Hydrogue 6 месяцев назад +3

      It's because the overall budget has been trending downwards for the line, shaving away more and more play features. You don't even see light-piping or spring-loaded missiles anymore. This is in direct proportion to the toys getting more expensive whilst continuing to shrink. Nice moulded detail and ankle tilts only get you so far, y'know?
      A recent example for me is how Pointblank getting a targetmaster partner meant sacrificing his wrist articulation and the little detachable shield they had planned.

    I think Hasbro was going with two goals with Legacy Armada Megs, make him look anime accurate, which they nailed, and give the guy KNEES. I get his missing the bells and whistles, but I had the original when he came out.
    Much like you I loved the chonk, all the gimmicks, and thought he was indeed one of the best of the Armada boys. However, just off RiD, and that Gigatron mold that could almost do yoga, no knee joints was noticeably frustrating. The added poseability really ups the Legacy for me. However, agreed on one thing, he should have, for Leader class...had Leader-1 and at least one port to plug him on, especially if it was the neat hideaway cavity in his tread shoulder where the minicons guns just peek out unobtrusively.

    Having owned both versions of this design, I miss the gimmicks of the original a little but I love the added leg articulation. I 3D printed some pegs that fit into the hexagonal ports so I just need a Leader-1 to plug onto him.
    That wind up lever on his side is supposed to make his turret spin but most likely the gears in his torso that make it work have completely disintegrated. They were cast in clear plastic for lord knows what reason, making them really fragile, and a lot of kids would turn the turret by hand anyway, possibly while the lever was held in place by the locking clip under his arm. It is DESTINED to die.

    Legacy gave me exactly what I wanted; a good-looking update with full articulation. I wanted the character more than the play features.
    I've never really been big on gimmicks (not counting combiners, multiple altmodes and/or Headmasters).
    - Missiles never exited me because the laser blasts in my head were better than some sad, limp bit of plastic that couldn't hit anything.
    - Sound effects always annoyed me and lights weren't that great 90% of the time.
    - And if we're being honest, putting a tiny car on a figure doesn't look great.
    Outside of him having a shank (which is brilliant) none of the original gimmicks did anything for me and were it not Megatron, it wouldn't be one that I'd be interested in getting. I guess it just depends on what we look for as collectors.

    I dunno I think your bringing up more gripes with modern transformers than really one about Legacy Armada Megs. No we don't have electronics or spring loaded launchers anymore and we haven't for a long time now so to hold THAT against Megatron here who is a phenomenal version of Armada Megs is.. odd. The original had those things for sure but the latest ER Starscream didn't have spring loaded null rays and missiles like G1 Starscream had and you wheren't holding that against him or any other version of a ER toy that didn't come with firing missiles like the originals. Just feel like you really missed the mark on Megs here, looks great, poses great, looks a ton like the character and isn't a brick. I think he's fantastic.

    I'm always mixed, cuz on one hand, there are definitely figures from UT and early Bayverse that are lowkey ruined by their gimmicks, usually because it includes lights and sounds and stuff that actively stood in the way of the transformation, or made the materials prone to breakage, or make it nigh impossible to stand-up let alone pose, or in the case of missiles just lead to weird guns that fire their missiles during storage and then never look right again. I'm grateful all of that's gone, but I'm sure they just heard, "we're tired of gimmicks," and took away anything that could be considered too much of a gimmick, even if it means going to extra lengths to make something like the face shield work without just putting a spring loaded slider in. I mean, I still think it's insane that Armada Starscream doesn't really do the sword wing thing he did before.

    The little windy lever is for when you rotate the tank turret onto his chest. You can turn it, and the turret spins as he goes "DECEPTICONS! ATTACK!" and laser firing sounds play.

    As a kid I hated the Armada toys because they couldn’t move like my Beast Wars toys. Legacy doing the same designs but prioritizing articulation is exactly what I was looking for.
    But, that does mean it doesn’t represent Armada, because Armada was just about gimmicks delivered on a robot of questionable proportions. One-steps and smash changers are the true successors to Armada.

    The 'Windy Lever' and goes to joking about it being a music box:
    Its a gimmick for the Stomach turret mode.
    In Armada, Megatron can move the turret from his back to his stomach, and aims his cannon, missle pod, and Leader-1, in a cone-like shape, and then starts to make it spin at high speeds.
    The lever is to make the turret spin for you.

    I think the best way that I can describe Legacy Armada Megatron is watching an Elvis impersonator competition. As someone who has grown up in the Memphis area I've come to enjoy all forms of Elvis look alikes therefore I still enjoy Legacy Armada Megatron especially since I missed his OG figure and the beast weaponizers work pretty good in the meantime. I do wanna try and get all the junkions and try a combiner form with him though, I feel that there could be some interesting combos there. PS forgive me for not being on PoGo more often things have been a bit hectic here with work and all.

    I recently picked up Legacy Armada Megs cus of some black friday sales and to fill the void of no longer having my original version. Fun fact Armada Megs was my first ever Megatron toy and he was a delight then, and while Legacy lacks the soul hes still a good toy and I don't regret picking him up,

    I wholeheartedly agree with the VIBE of armada being lost, i mean c'mon not even some traditional minicon ports? But I do also prefer the newer Megs being a more posable action figure that's allowed to be Megs without the gimmick baggage.
    However I do agree that it'd be impossible to capture the old magic without using a straight up reissue anyway!

    Armada was my introduction to the franchise and this Megatron was my first. This toy is awesome, even though I lost the antlers for a few years (eventually found both again!) and lost all 3 missiles it shoots within my first year of ownership (didn't have the same luck with those)

    I definitely think that with Armada officially being "vintage" (sink your craw into that one, fellow oldheads), we should be getting reissues within the next five years, and number one oughta be Megatron. He'll cost a helluva penny, but he's just such a PLATFORM.

    I will say as an armada bro, having grown up with the trilogy, it's nice to know how fun we used to have it. Mini-cons made the larger figures more fun. a pack of 3 used to cost 10 bucks, but I digress. I will say that I have had the pleasure of owning a megatron and seeing the legacy remake....is a little depressing. Sure it's got articulation that the old megatron didn't, but at the cost of play features?! It feels like they robbed the genuine soul and spirit of Armada. Either way, I am glad I grew up with the Armada series.

    Even more excellent-er review than usual! Thank you! I missed out on Armada Megatron when he came out, but I got the Galvatron version, and he was just a complete blast. Wish I'd kept him, but I needed some quick cash, a few years later. The new version just doesn't do anything for me. Okay, so it's got knees and ankles; so what? The Great Southern Beedo is fascinated by interactivity, gimmicks, and mechanical & electronic whizz-bangs.
    As for the crank, you're supposed to pull his torso and legs apart so his waist-pillar is revealed, rotate the turret around so it's on his belly, push his torso and legs back together, point the turret cannon forward, and when you turn the crank, it's supposed to spin like a Death Blossom / Gatling gun. But the gears for this feature are delicate and are often broken.

    Dunno why they didn't give him a knife tho. The funky hand just feels more like a mismold than a cheeky reference

    Ah, idk i grew up with armada and all of my armada stuff is mostly the toys I had as a kid, even with all the nostalgia I vastly prefer the new one. That's of course from the jaded old perspective of someone who doesn't really "play" with the figures anymore
