Thanks for this. I recently purchased the Pro Tech Toolkit, watched your video and had the job done in about 20 minutes. Thanks for the very clear instructions.
Great guide. Just installed 32GB with success. Removing one of the motherboard screws was difficult. And reattaching the antenna wire took longer than it should. But happy with the results.
Braved it today. The ifixit online guide is the best with user comments. Some of the components are a bit delicate... LED cable, Fan cable. Getting the Antenna wire back in the socket was the biggest challenge BUT ALL GOOD. Saved $$$ going to 64 Gig. Lots of ram now for my Virtual Machine Win 10
i just did this thanks to this video. Its really quite easy and I am not someone who can usually do this stuff. The hardest part for me was getting the antenna cable back on. I did this by lining up the connector and gently pushing on it with the rubber reverse end of a screwdriver. If you have very small hands you might be able to do it with a finger.
At 2:25 I would not recommend pulling the power cable up by the wire cluster, or at least that close to the connector. The tension on the crimp is alreadyh pretty high, and Apple doesn't exactly over-engineer the components for repairability or durability.
I would like to thank you for this excellent video. I don't think I could have upgraded the RAM on this Mac Mini without it. I purchased one of your Pro Tech Tookits and a mat. It went very well thanks to YOU. 😃
Just did this upgrade. I watch 9-1-1 and I felt like I was on the line with a skilled operator. Everything is so tiny (compared to a desktop pc). But I felt like Kelsea was in the room guiding me through every step of the way - both making it seem simple and making it actually simple. I purchased RAM elsewhere but purchased the iFixIt Essential Electronics Toolkit and an anti-static mat with spaces for each of the 17 screws. I took notes as I worked my way through the disassembly process, but also saved the screws in order on my mat: Kelsea’s explanation on the reassembly was first rate (just reversing the disassembly) that I did not need my notes. Great video. Take your time and expect it will take longer than her 5 minutes, but all the info is there and it was a project with total success. Thank you.
I would also recommend against paying Apple to upgrade the SSD. You can get a 2TB SSD and a Thunderbolt SATA-3 drive enclosure for around for around $450 (less if you shop around). That beats the $1200 price point for Apple's 2TB upgrade by over 60%. You also still have the 256 GB storage that comes with the computer.
Quick notes for anyone else following this otherwise great video; the instructions for removing and replacing the wifi shield/antenna plate are in different orientations (so double and triple check which screws you use). Really should have done both with the ports facing the computer surgeon.. Also, neither this video nor the iFixit guide mention that after installing the RAM your Mac Mini might take longer than normal to switch on the first time; I spent a panicked 40 seconds or wondering how I'd managed to brick my machine before it finally chimed, some people have said you may need to press and hold the power button for 10 seconds or so rather than just the normal single press. So if it doesn't come on right away, don't panic; wait, then try a longer press and wait again, and only if neither of those work should you panic!
Haven't found anything on the whole internet about this issue I'm having. So I'm commenting here to see if anyone had a similar issue. I have a 2018 Mac mini. I bought the 64 gb of ram from crucial. Installed the ram and then I turn on the computer. The light comes on, stays for a minute, nothing appears on the monitor, and the last thing the Mac does is that for a brief moment the fan gos full speed. then shuts down. Then the Mac stars again by it self and does the same thing over and over. I went back to the old ram and it worked. So maybe the ram modules are defective, but has anyone experienced something like this? Is the ram defective or is this a known issue?
Its unbelievable that it takes more to take apart the 2018 Mac Mini just replace the ram whereas the mid 2011 Mac Mini, you can easily replace the RAM after opening the plastic bottom. What happened to Apple?!
Hi, I have two Late 2012 Mac Minis but only one of them zaps me when I touch it and at the same time touch another grounded metal-cased equipment (e.g. an amplifier). It's not painful at all but I definitely feel it. Is there an issue with the Mini I should worry about? Thanks.
The cradle for the exhaust fan connecter came off and appears that also one of the pins connected to the logic board ( the one of the far end) . Will this render the fan useless? And any advice on options to fix it???
4:18 I would suggest to screw the bracket a bit and then reconnect the cable -> because the cable sits perfectly in place before you push it down. when you are done, you can finish with the screw.
man, i thought the inside of this mac is 8gb single. its actually dual 4GB+4GB. i just bought single 8GB of ram. is theres a problem if its 12GB ram? haha
So here is a thought. Why not just disassemble it and leave it out of the case? Thermals would work better. Bit ugly/messy but it's small enough to be concealed.
I have all the right screwdrivers, including t6 torx security screwdriver. The t6 security screwdriver removed three of the six screws described at the beginning of the video, but then I couldn't remove the remaining three screws. Does the T6 security screw somehow damage the screwdriver?
maybe a silly question: when taking out the ram they were all faced in the same direction ( we both saw the back plates) when placing back we see the front of the first ram plate. any reason for that?
The latest Mac mini 2018 builds are no longer user upgradeable - you need to take your Mac mini back to your local Apple Store to have them upgrade it for you. They've changed all the screws to stop you accessing the internals. They look like proprietary T3/4 security screws.
I got a 32GB kit from crucial for US$ 93.00 on Amazon for Cyber Monday. Right now it seems to be running for US$ 125.00, still 131% cheaper than doing it directly with Apple. Here's the link for the curious: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071H38422/ (Not affiliate)
The 16GB upgrade is worth just doing it through Apple when you buy the Mini. You don't save enough when you factor in the time to do this and shipping costs. Especially for a business, they don't want to be opening up their brand new computer like this; they just want to get to work.
@@GTJay well their kit comes with the tools, but it's also not that great cause it's only a single RAM module. They want you to only replace one, which is bad because mismatched RAM reduces the performance boost. At least OWC sells a 2 module kit. The 16GB upgrade is still better to do from Apple when you buy the Mini.
Yeah unless you haven't noticed apple isn't about people spending time on repairing their products, they're about the consumer not having to do that work.
Why 99% of the videos are made for Apple products!? I hate the brand as it is, selling low cost items at really high prices, it is imo an elitist brand, so i just use my old pc computer that is easy to upgrade, fix, and diagnose, and wont cost an arm and a leg
I just did this install. I work in tech but I’ve never opened a computer up in my life. This was super simple! Just take your time and be thorough.
I just completed the Ram swap process today. Thank you so much Ifixit, it was a smooth process and easy to follow.
thank u for keeping it short and straight forward, dosnt make the video longer than it required. thumbs up, keep up the good work.
I don’t own a Mac mini either but I watched this video to get a feel for the quality of their work. I am very impressed.
Who? Apple or iFixit?
Holy cow great instructions. I like tear down videos with such clear instructions. You almost don’t even need the video.
Just upgraded!! Thanks for the amazing instructions!!! Also got my Ifixit essential kit which made everything super easy!!! Thanks
Just did this op on my mac mini. Worked perfectly, The guide and the tools are perfect. Thank you iFixit!

I don't have a mac mini. Why am I watching this?
same here....

Thinking of buying one?
I just bought one

Awesome guide, very high quality, very informative. Loved it. And I don't even own a Mac Mini. :)) Thanks, guys. You're awesome!
I hope the 2020 is the same. Looking forward to your guide.

Short, Sweet and to the point.
Thanks for this! Made it super easy. Easier than previous Mac Mini's thats for sure.
Does Samsung ram also works? It's spec is SODIMM, 2666MHZ, PC4-25600

Liked the nail polish.
I did it, put corsair 32 gig ram in it, its flying now
Its unbelievable that it takes more to take apart the 2018 Mac Mini just replace the ram whereas the mid 2011 Mac Mini, you can easily replace the RAM after opening the plastic bottom. What happened to Apple?!
yeah....it seems to be deliberately difficult.....smh.....
The crucial ram I’m ordering is ddr4 3200 or 2933 or 2666mz. Will the mac support that? Or do I need to find 2666mz ONLY?
Thanks!
One of my fat motherboard screws would not go back in. Just kept turning.
It seems secure with just one screw.
What do you think?
Where are you learn this , you guys just open anything you want, I bet you could tear so spaceship from SpaceX. What major are you in, thx
Can you make a video on how to change the ssd drive on the Mac mini 2018 or 2020 please 🥺

excellent video!
For-teesix screws holding the fan? Man, that's a lot! :D
Awesome guide! Thank you for helping me save some money!
The cradle for the exhaust fan connecter came off and appears that also one of the pins connected to the logic board ( the one of the far end) . Will this render the fan useless? And any advice on options to fix it???
It’s not soldered?
Thank you. Used this guide and my iFixit Mako Bit Set. Very helpful guide!
I did this with my Mac mini and OMG it was so much easier than this even implied... Thanks Amazon and iFixit for helping me save $135 :P
4:18 I would suggest to screw the bracket a bit and then reconnect the cable -> because the cable sits perfectly in place before you push it down. when you are done, you can finish with the screw.
Y’all really should be using an ESD mat and strap for this...
Same thing i was thinking
man, i thought the inside of this mac is 8gb single. its actually dual 4GB+4GB.
i just bought single 8GB of ram. is theres a problem if its 12GB ram? haha
How can you tell if you can upgrade your ram on any laptop?
is it safe to have one ram of 16gb and another with 4gb memory capacity? I read somewhere that this can cause problems, is that true?
So here is a thought. Why not just disassemble it and leave it out of the case? Thermals would work better. Bit ugly/messy but it's small enough to be concealed.
Great! really easy to do thanks to your tutorial....:)
Awesome tutorial! Thank you.
I have all the right screwdrivers, including t6 torx security screwdriver. The t6 security screwdriver removed three of the six screws described at the beginning of the video, but then I couldn't remove the remaining three screws. Does the T6 security screw somehow damage the screwdriver?
i had a crappy t6 security screwdriver. read the reviews on amazon if you buy one from there.
Would changing the RAM void the AppleCare warranty?
Breathing on an Apple product the wrong way would void the AppleCare warranty.
So, a static bracelet isn’t necessary?
maybe a silly question: when taking out the ram they were all faced in the same direction ( we both saw the back plates) when placing back we see the front of the first ram plate. any reason for that?
skinnybruna the higher capacity ram has them on both sides of the chip to fit more
I usually dont like apple products, mainly cause of the OS and the price, but i gotta admit, i freaking love the mac mini
What is the functionality of the RAM shield? It's perforated for air to get in, but why is it there anyway?
it’s an RF shield to keep radiation from the other (very tightly packed) components from introducing errors into the RAM.
what with warranty?
I did it! ;-) Very helpful thank you!
The latest Mac mini 2018 builds are no longer user upgradeable - you need to take your Mac mini back to your local Apple Store to have them upgrade it for you. They've changed all the screws to stop you accessing the internals. They look like proprietary T3/4 security screws.
that sux...
Need T6H with later builds.
Remember when the Mac Mini's selling point was it was user accessible? Yeah, they killed that when Jobs passed away.
It still is, wdym?
Oh yeah ? Try replacing the hard drive
Are you sending parts to Turkey?
For iPhone 7 Plus battery
So I stripped the screw that holds the antenna and snapped one side of holder for the fan power. No what?
Just pay Apple to do it
The most part of this video is the Reassembly, because disassembly its so easy when compared to reassembly lol
Did anyone else think the fan was still moving?😂bc I did at one point
En realidad si Apple lo hubiese querido poner fácil de verdad, tendría que haber dejado la RAM accesible con tan sólo quitar la primera tapa… 🤔😒
Nice & Thanks :)
Would be funny if you could upgrade the storage as well, but all those TB3 ports -kinda- make up for it
Whole process rather daunting
You can justbbuy the ram seperate so its cheaper
I got a 32GB kit from crucial for US$ 93.00 on Amazon for Cyber Monday. Right now it seems to be running for US$ 125.00, still 131% cheaper than doing it directly with Apple.
Here's the link for the curious: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071H38422/ (Not affiliate)
So basically we gonna need T5, T6 and T10 torx
JUST TO NOTE:
If you're getting any other type of RAM stick, DO NOT mix it with the one that came with the Mac Mini.
I second this. Matching pairs are a much better option.
Okay, I’ve done.
I’ll never buy Mac mini again even used one was cheap, never.
i ♥️ love I fix it
Who in the galaxy disliked this video!?
Genius Bar employees, most likely
don't pay apple to upgrade da RAM,pay iFixit $170 for tools :)
Still cheaper
No,no, no! It's about $20 for tools and $150 for the RAM.
Remember when you just twisted the bottom and did your business? No screws.
The 16GB upgrade is worth just doing it through Apple when you buy the Mini. You don't save enough when you factor in the time to do this and shipping costs. Especially for a business, they don't want to be opening up their brand new computer like this; they just want to get to work.
It's always crazy to pay to much for upgrades. It should be cheaper buying it straight from the manufacturer but almost never is which is really sad.
I don't even have a Mac mini.
*Apple would like to know your location!*
when apple make home super power hi fi amplifier like this,,
geez this is needlessly annoying to do
this is easy af. if u think this is hard u definitely are a apple user
Yasin Hasan yes that logic is sound. Theres no way i own anything but apple products. Good call, friend!
@@juliusnigelmarturillas3629 because for someone it might be difficult and for others it might not?
7th
isn't 164$ about 75% of 600?
Off*
$164 is for 16GB. The $600 is for 32GB.
Unless you buy all their ifixit gear(actually, I dont know how much that stuff costs)
@@GTJay well their kit comes with the tools, but it's also not that great cause it's only a single RAM module. Why I need that much ram in mac even I can't run fortnight
* Uses small and very fragile wires and parts so people who tries to repair or upgrade fails to do so *
*thats how apple works*
Yeah unless you haven't noticed apple isn't about people spending time on repairing their products, they're about the consumer not having to do that work.
I just did this process. They aren’t small or fragile, they’re standard connectors. You see them in laptops from all companies.
sorry apple
Well, RAM half the Apple’s price+ iFixit kit price= Apple price
Imagine my shock, Apple charging double the price
Why 99% of the videos are made for Apple products!? I hate the brand as it is, selling low cost items at really high prices, it is imo an elitist brand, so i just use my old pc computer that is easy to upgrade, fix, and diagnose, and wont cost an arm and a leg
