As a mobile app developer, I need to have mac hardware to build iOS apps. I have a custom built 8700k desktop, but needed a mac for building iOS apps. So I grabbed the new i5 mac mini. Works extremely well for my use case without having to buy a 2k+ macbook pro. I only use it really as a server, so I don't really care too much about the gpu piece of it. I just want it decently fast to compile code, and it does that well! We have a couple 2012 i5 dual core mac mini's at work we use for servers, and this new one is ridiculously better.
I'm still using the late 2012 mac mini with my own ssd, works perfect for iOS and Web Dev. I'll be upgrading to the new one shortly, they're great for developers.
Finally a developer's opinion around here :D. I'm looking forward to buy one for the same reason, and even that a Macbook Pro Retina Display is awesome to use, a more powerful hardware with a "bunch of savings" in exchange for the lack of a gourmet screen IS the big deal for developers. Buying Mac Mini, a good mid-entry monitor, and ergonomic pheripherials, can worth it for an office enviroment without spending almost the same on a worse macbook pro and having those thermal issues in exchange for a "awesome user experience".
He sometimes makes valid points but you can easily tell when he's grasping at straws if he doesn't have enough content. A good example is his Battlefield 5 review.
I think his point was that they used RAM they just had as opposed to having to buy special Mac RAM. I believe Macs used to be particular about the types of RAM even though it shouldn't make much difference. But, you are correct in that we all don't have gobs of RAM just lying about. :)
He says that 8gb is not enough. I disagree I use 8 for gaming in my desktop with chrome in the background and have little trouble. Maybe in a couple years I might get 16gb but yeah.
@@hello_b well, to be fair, you *can* run macOS on the vast majority of PCs, and with a bit of tweaking and some mediocre/basic technical knowhow, you can make it work perfectly. I still have my old PC that I turned into a Hackintosh sometime around El Capitan, and it runs stuff flawlessly, full integration with Apple services, great speed, etc, which I built for comparatively far cheaper than the roughly equivalent Mac models available at the time.
@Johnathan Bieß - That's _one_ type of memory called "RAM". There is another type of memory called "ROM" (Read-Only Memory) and another called Flash Memory. Ever played a cartridge-based game? The games are stored on ROMs; which is why that term is used for game files used for emulators. Ever used a Compact-flash or SD card? That's using Flash memory to store the files. USB storage devices also use Flash memory for the storage of files. See how people ended up using "memory" to say "storage space", now? Lol! Memory is a medium of storage just like optical discs and HDD. Solid State Drives are utilizing Flash memory as well.
10 years ago, I installed Ubuntu on my Macbook without any issues, and it even worked almost out of the box. Now, they made it impossible :( I know that you don't buy a Mac to install Linux on it, but still, it's annoying if a choice is taken from you.
I have an HP EliteBook that *could* run Windows 10, but I don't trust it to run amazingly well. Linux Mint runs smooth on it and I can run Chrome and Spotify without much trouble. Macs will eventually lose support, and the T2 chip will prevent someone to use a different OS for up-to-date security.
@@narwhal4304 Precisely. *Now* I'm typing on an iMac which Apple no longer supports, happily running Debian. @@steingat Since all Apple computers come with SSDs, this isn't much of an issue. For my use case though, upping the internal to SSD was really just for fun, since I barely use it. @@mahiru20ten who cares about users? more upgradability means more compatibility issues, less user controllability and less income. besides its a lot easier for the company just to swap out the whole motherboard rather then searching for the problem and replacing only the broken part.
I thinks its held hostage because the T2 chip encrypts automatically on the fly, So if you can't access your T2 chip your data will be gone unless you have backed up.
@@IpelengMotsatsi There is no way to access the data on that mac if the machine is not booted up and the usb or ethernet are working, if the machine breaks for some reason your data is gone, even if the t2 wasn't there, the nand chips and controller are directly soldered on the motherboard, de-soldering nand chips might be possible but it also corrupts the memory (and would require using the nand's manufacturer flash program to be run on it to even work again, which would completely destroy the data, this just assumes that you also managed to move the controller, and were able to relocate all the nand chips, sometimes you even require to run a separate flash process outside the machine with a special piece of hardware). So yes, if you overcome the hardest part that is to de-solder nand and reflash it, and re-solder it into a mac without ruining everything, then the t2 might be an issue, but i don't see a point in calling t2 an issue when there are ssd soldered macs without t2 with no motherboard port to recover the info and well the info is gone.
@@mahiru20ten apple is a high volume customer, they get that sort of stuff for dirty cheap, in their eyes, they are hindering the chances of refurbishers "stealing potential market on the long run" as well as reducing a ton of variables and controlling repair, so in their eyes, is totally worth it. Also the difference on the rates would mean that paying an us worker to fix a machine locally would be more expensive on the long run than actually doing this sort of crap.
@@davyrando1203 I hate OSX. And Apple for that matter. Their business practices and the way they trap their consumers. Its effective and brilliant. But I won't lie, they make some pretty sexy hardware, and I wish I can buy and be able to install any OS I want.
They're not blocking third party OS's, they're blocking messing with the internal drive. People who have valuable IP to protect will value this very highly.
When comparing the the MAC to a similarly priced PC, did you include the added cost of the 32GB ram upgrade over the base 8GB that initially came with the system?
It's probably balanced out by the fact that a licence for Windows 10 is never included in the cost of building a Windows PC. I'm doing the costing right now and that 30% "Apple Tax" that everyone scoffs at, quickly gets chipped away when I have to add a full Windows 10 licence and an anti-virus subscription to the build.
@@stroym Is it possible to move an OEM licence to another PC? I tried years back when I had a Windows XP computer stolen. I had a replacement PC built for me, but when I tried to install Windows from my hologrammed CD, I was told the version I had was intended for another computer and couldn't be installed on the new one. Has this now changed with Windows 10?
Windows Defender performs perfectly fine (one of the good things, on W10) and even if your want additional protection, there's tons of decent, free anti-virus/malware protection software, out there anyway (even some of the brand names, do a free basic version). Plus, If for some reason, you haven't already got a transferable W10 key (or a old W7/W8 key), license keys are currently relatively cheap, on Amazon.

João Victor Schiavo Thunderbolt is a conmector that enables connected devices to access PCIe-lanes. That's also why eGPUs are connected via Thunderbolt.

An Apple computer under a 1000 bucks tho, that's more like it. If only they would make an Apple in a normal form factor that is a little bit more affordable I could look into NOT dealing with Windows audio drivers as a music producer.
The prior model started out with at $499.00 base price. Does everyone realized that Apple uses mostly "off the shelf" hardware in their systems, the same RAM, same CPUs etc., they just charge more for it.
You should mention its complete, dead silent operation. I've never had a computer this quiet. Even when I'm pushing it to its limit, the new Mac mini makes no noise at all. You can't even tell it's on if the screen is off.
Really, I just come here for the comments to see all the butt hurt going around. :) If this thing doesn't sell, maybe, just maybe Apple will get the point and work on something better. But for the individuals that this product seems to be targeting, I sure have seen a lot of people with this new Mac Mini's. For simple use, yes it is a bit pricey, but tends to fall into what people are looking for in terms of ease of use and just "works". As long as that keeps going on, Apple will keep many of these devices around to cover this area at this price point. I am not defending or complaining about what they are doing. I and highly integrated in the apple ecosystem and MS. I see the worth in both, just don't see the point of shitting on everything that you may not totally agree with. That has got to be one miserable life to live. Its simple, if its not your cup of tea.... move on and you don't need to tell everyone about it. So much of the input from people is just trash and useless arguments. Social media has really overinflated peoples perception of their worth I tell you.
If it doesn't sell well that will be because of people going around saying a thousand bucks is too much money for an awesome little device. Meanwhile the same kartoffel-kopfen own a smart phone that costs a thousand bucks but nobody says boo about that.
@@Orbit_Corona to be honest, I'm waiting for apple to stop making computers and just say they are a luxury phone/gadget company. They just aren't trying hard enough with their computers anymore. My brother use to work for Apple when Steve Jobs was around. Around a year after he passed, the internal company structure was changing so much that it was forcing a lot of the better people out. My brother was hired as QC for a bunch of stuff and he ended up doing a lot of the actual coding instead of just testing as he ran 90 hour weeks because most of the people on his team left. Then he left too, cause he was medically falling apart from the work, California sucks and he didn't like the direction the company was going.. Ramble over.... tmi added for an old video lol
At 3:00 -- "10 Gigabit/second over the network". Yes, but you need a high-end router, not the standard 10/100/1000 Mbps router, and the other computer on your network needs its own 10 Gbps network-adapter. Also, you need "CAT 6" Ethernet cables, since "CAT 5e" cables are limited to just 1 Gbps.
The lack of dedicated GPU is the biggest problem with this machine. Severely limits the potential of what it can do. Or maybe rather it just severely cuts out anything gaming related or 3D render related, which isn't the average consumer after all. Still, there is no upgrade option to add it even, which makes it suck.
their target market are pretty much production houses (who maintain their own screens) and iOS developers (who literally just need a mac to compile their software because apple) so I don't really see the most pressing need for a GPU. And you can add a GPU to it with a thunderbolt box.
@@xureality Adding it externally is quite irrelevant. You can, but at an extremely higher cost and downgrade of form factor. And as I said, the average consumer probably don't need too much GPU power, but that doesn't change the fact that this severely limits the possible use of this device. Not everything needs to be a "super extreme gamer rig", but not even having a weak dedicated GPU is quite jarring, as even a weak GPU would outperform the integrated GPU by several times.
The Mini is so small that adding an external GPU + SSD + even a freaking Noctua fan would still make a smaller-than-desktop PC, so no I don't see any issues with external upgrading a mac mini compared to any PC.
@@EbrahimSaadawii Ok, then go ahead and do that lol. And it's irrelevant if you think it's ok to cash out even more for what a lot of people think should be part of the package, as outlined in the video as well due to it's lackluster GPU performance. Had it been cheaper and same price level as it previously were, it could be more justifiable. Not to mention the "you can just buy external"-excuse doesn't really cover the lack of ability to even upgrading to add it.
I wonder why my 6 core Mini with only 8gb of RAM plays games so well with decent graphics settings.. . I never would have guessed my little power house can't run a video game.
I had bought Macs for over ten years (consisting of an iMac, Mac Mini and MacBook Air) and completely intended on buying a Mac Mini, but with the price being $1000 for the base model, I decided to pick myself up a gaming laptop and swap in an SSD and it cost me $100 less. I honestly don’t think I’m going back
What this Mac is for is the home user, hobby musician, graphic artist or RUclips creator. It does all of these functions extremely well and shouldn't be viewed as a serious professional production workstation for video or 3D work. I just bought one about a month ago to use as my recording studio machine. I run Logic Pro X, EZ Drummer, Fruity Loops and a few other standard recording packages. I use a Focusrite 6i6 interface where I run Line 6 Helix Native for guitar and bass. This replaced a PC that I was running Sonar on before. This Mac is amazing, it runs circles around the PC and is absolutely silent. I highly recommend for the uses I mention above, it is a phenomenal little machine for this stuff. If you want professional studio grade horsepower for video, animation or true professional music production, get the Pro.
@Gray Cat Productions - For photoshop, processing, compositing, etc it will work fine. You just need more horsepower with an external GPU for 3D rendering or extensive video work.
this is good to hear. it's been really hard to find reviews of the new mac mini that don't complain about it's lack of ability when it comes to video editing and gaming. some people don't seem to realise that not everybody want to edit video in 4k or play games! (which this machine is obviously not designed to do). i use logic audio and have been looking to upgrade from my old quad core i5 imac. on paper, the 6 core mac mini looks like a great choice....super fast cpu, upgradeable ram and lots of connectivity for my thunderbolt audio interface and external ssd's. much cheaper than the mac pro and doesn't have two graphics cards that i don't need! i have seen a couple of reviews that say it flies for music production, so i'm encouraged to read your post confirming this.
@Zulu Voodoo I'm a musician who has been using a mac mini everyday since 2012. Sure, it's not perfect but it's lasted me a long time with some cpu intensive tracks, and I have very little complaints. I'm building a computer next because of price reasons though. Apple isn't above criticism at all, but you just sound like somebody who is going to hate them no matter what. You ignored all of the positives in the video then picked on the one major complaint Linus said as your reason for why it sucks when replying to somebody who said it's great for creatives doing less cpu intensive things.
@@nudsh But the specs!!! I don't care how awesome it is. I don't care how great it works or how fast it is. And Because It Is An Apple! If you think your Mac Mini works great for what you use it for, you must be delusional, the specs say it is no good, a sh_t sandwich. If you think you enjoy working on your Mac Mini, you are delusional because the specs and price say that it is impossible to enjoy and work well. If you think your opinion is more accurate than my facts/specs just because you actually own and use one, you are wrong. Why would you spend a thousand dollars on a system to record your music when you can't even play all my games on it? Why would you buy a pre-built when you can build it yourself for less money?....and an Apple at that? Why would you own an Apple? Truly smart people do not buy products based on quality experience, Truly smart people buy products based on price alone. Truly smart people don't buy BMW / expensive cars, no. ONLY people who have extra money to spend, spend extra money on expensive cars. I get tired of people saying that I am wrong when it comes to Macs simply because their opinion is different, don't tell me I am wrong just because YOU have a different opinion or experience, different people have different priorities and wants and needs etc, and you being different than me does not make me wrong. But "everybody knows" that you should not spend extra money if you don't have to, therefore I know I am the smart one here because my money is more important than your experience. If you decide you want to "fit in" with the smart people and you want to have a good experience recording your music, build your own PC with Windows for less money. PS: Having a great race-car is not about winning races, it is about having the most horsepower for the amt of money you spent on the race-car. See? Pure logic! ;)
TransNigr Palpatine I was more hoping of a option of one for not that much more expensive then the normal one, basically a Mac mini S kinda, so group a could have the extra power and group B could be people like you
one thing I always have to give credit to apple. Their products look extremely good even on the inside (especially all the Mac products). It's so strange that they don't want you to open them but care so much about what they look so sexy on the inside.
Keep in mind that tinkering around in the old Classic Macs could literally KILL people, so Apple's adversion to people tinkering on the inside is learned early on.

I am an engineering student who has to do iOS apps for class. Good to know this will do the job.

Lying around....
No, some memory is read-only.
Random access, sequential access.
Read only, prog rom,eprom.
Apples and oranges.
Lol!

Storage is not held hostage by the t2 chip itself, is held hostage by the fact that is soldered into the motherboard.
Wonder why companies solder things to the mobo. Won't that make repairs or replacing things harder when users have to eventually service them?

When comparing the the MAC to a similarly priced PC, did you include the added cost of the 32GB ram upgrade over the base 8GB that initially came with the system?
It's probably balanced out by the fact that a licence for Windows 10 is never included in the cost of building a Windows PC. If this thing doesn't sell, maybe, just maybe Apple will get the point and work on something better.

Will it run illustrator
@@nudsh But the specs!!! I don't care how awesome it is. I don't care how great it works or how fast it is. If I can build a PC with better specs for less money, then the Mac Mini simply cannot be a good computer to use. It cannot be fast and reliable. Why?....Because Of The Specs!
Truly smart people do not buy products based on quality experience,
Truly smart people buy products based on price alone.
PS:
Having a great race-car is not about winning races, it is about having the most horsepower for the amt of money you spent on the race-car. See? Pure logic! ;)
I wish they would have just added a gpu and made it a bit bigger or like higher end laptop chips
I'm glad they didn't. Not everyone needs a GPU and that would just add unnecessary cost, power and size. If you want a GPU get a dock.
That’s worse specs then some $500 phones
Unboxing was actually Legendary😂😂😅
make a video about NUC+Hackintosh
Snazzy Labs already has

Why Hackintosh when there are so many Linux distros
@@nO_d3N1AL coz this vid about mac mini, not "linux mini"
The 80's had thriller we have Linus' transition into ads
3:30 Having been a Windows fanboy most of my life, I bought a 2012 Macbook Pro and gave it an ssd and 12gb of ram. It's now my daily driver. The OS is much more efficient than Windows in the work-flow, largely achieved by gestures.
