  • The factory replacement driver for the Fostex 6301 series speaker has been out of stock for a while now at all of the usual places. I recently picked up a 6301d that works but has been used hard over a lot of years and needs a new driver. So while the Fostex model is out of stock or out of production, we're forced to consider other replacement speakers. Hopefully, they will be available again soon, but in the meantime, why not try the most popular 4" car stereo replacement speaker on Amazon?
In this quick video, that's exactly what we're doing. We're going to stick a Boss BRS-40 into the 6301 cabinet and hear how it compares to the original, albeit clapped-out, driver. It would be great to get hold of a new factory driver to test against the popular options, so let me know if you've got a line on any of those for sale. There are also other 4" full-range speaker options out there, so let me know if you think one would work better for this box.

A bit 800hz-ish, that new speaker. The Old sounded quite nice actually. Pretty good definition low, and maybe a bit forward in the high mids, to make you mix out nastiness?
I like the Old one. The new, not so much.

A substantial and absolutely predictable difference!!! The abominable sound of the Boss strikes again...!
Since the power amplifier block appears to be fine and without immediate need for Recap, even for the basic monitoring effect you mentioned, I would simply bet on a new external suspension for the original Fostex Driver, since the moving coil and the Spider show no obvious signs of collapse, either now or in the near future.
Hope everything is well with you.
Here in this planted country by the sea, nothing new but life is being lived in the good Lusitanian way, with the Sound and Light Rental recovering very slowly and now in new ways.

Whats the adhesive they/you use on securing the speaker cover? Mine appears to be a butyl rubber or similar but isn’t staying put, thx.

Known in the trade as Fostex Goo, but I think you're right. I scraped all of it off of this one & will probably replace it with small tabs of VHB tape in the corners or something similar. It was really all over this one. I'll post photos with what I use when I put the grill back on this one for good. Thanks for the message!

I have 2 6301's in my "to repair when I have the time" bucket.
Both need the 4" replaced, but the replacement I can get now does not fit in these two cabinets. :/
Will surely follow this to see what driver you end up finding.

I use them as shoutboxes between FoH and Monitorworld, or as backstage monitor for the actors to listen in to how far the show is. (and similar situations)
Once we used some for fills by the frontrows in a musical.

The original sounds better - not great but acceptable for its size. The Boss sounds honky, nasally.
