*SPOILERS FOR HALF-LIFE 2, IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED IT OR REACHED THE END OF 'WE DON'T GO TO RAVENHOLM', DO NOT READ! There's something insidious about some of the source maps out there. Half-Life 2 did such a good job of making you feel alone, that it really passes onto any mod that uses the same textures. Prime example, one of my favourite moments is at the end of 'We Don't Go To Ravenholm'. This is because you walk out into a small industrial area, and what I believe to be one of the best scores embodying kenopsia plays. It is called 'Particle Ghost' for any who are interested. As soon as you walk out, the only life there is a couple crows and a few headcrabs before you reach the snipers. The dilapidated state of the apartment block and the old and untouched look of the surrounding railway combined with the musical score really gets me. Now I get that second hand feeling from any 'construct' map, such as genesis, which have wacky constructions and weird creepy buildings that serve no purpose. It's all very spooky.
I never thought to just, explore maps alone and not doing anything else. Now that I'm watching more of these kinds of videos, I think I might do that. Great video fam.
Awesome video stellar. As someone who has way too much too much time in gmod, this map definitely means a lot to me, and I appreciate that someone took the time to make a history video about this map. I really liked the scripting and editing you did here, you've got potential! Keep up the great stuff! (looking forward to deer stalker : D)
Me and my friend used to play on rp_downtown we always went to the middle part of the map (forgot what its called) talking having fun until 2018 he got cancer everytime i go there it feels as if somethings missing and i get a creepy vibe going/seeing it
I believe you are one of the first, if not THE first, user to make a video about Kenopsia and how it relates to Garry's Mod! Most other videos about it weren't made until 2021-2022. Some RUclipsrs owe you a big thank-you, lol! Nice video though, cheers! :)
Thank you brother, part of me believes I started the wagon that got all this rolling lol (Librarian was the real OG though! He was the inspiration for this video)
I've noticed saturation affects the eeriness heavily. Bigcity for example isn't as scary as a map with dull colors and greys. The feeling of being watched on source maps also fades when you've played the game consistently for years in my experience
There were a couple of servers that attempted to bring back the classic DarkRP, but they didn't usually last very long. These servers are also pretty obscured with the lack of player counts. I played such server not long ago and it peaked up to like 15-20 players one day or two and it really brought back that classic feeling. But the map was changed to rp_christmastown for some reason and wasn't really brought back to downtown even when people requested it. Eventually I heard one active staff left and the server died almost immediately. Bringing back Classic DarkRP is and can prove quite difficult as it clearly isn't the norm anymore and obscured by other high player count servers. It requires alot of advertisements and announcements in order to bring such server to light. It sounds good on paper, but in reality it just sits in the corner. It's a sad truth, tbh.
There's lots of things that go into making a server. An idea can work no matter how abstract if your marketing is good and the idea catches people's attention. The problem with servers that reach that low of a player count and die very quickly is that the people who run it have no experience. Thats why also most servers just die in general. If a popular gmod provider made a classic darkrp server, guaranteed it'd get popular but a lot of the time it's small servers with no idea what they're doing. Sad reality for sure. But if it could be revived i would think it's possible. It would just need constant attention.
4:37 I honestly feel like a better term for at least how I feel when I'm in these maps is Scopophobia or the fear of being watched. Sure the maps were intended to be played with other people but its not like a forbidden thing to play the map alone. When you do play it alone, the feeling is certainly elevated. Regardless, the feeling of emptiness is forever present.
"When playing these maps, it makes you think someone is gonna hop out right around the corner." Oh yes, 12 year old gangsters trying to rob you every 5 minutes. The true DarkRP experience.
Glad to see a more serious (and respectful) take on this whole haunting thing. I've seen so many videos of people doing "ghost hunts" on this map it boggles the mind. This however, was great content.
The only creepy moment I ever had was of a mod that put an intentional stalker in your game, I didn't remember downloading it but it freaked me the fuck out when I turned to see a Dr. Breen standing behind me with a stupid creepy ass looking face. Never really felt lonely or being watched wandering around places like downtown, bigcity, contruct, etc. though.
I remember fnaf NPC's and slenderman. My god, how fearless I was as a teenager. 500+ hours, where at least 400 were singleplayer. Never felt fear. Even watching this video scares me now at age 22.
Hey there! Great video, thanks for sharing. Just a heads-up the first two authors you mentioned were just using ripped edits of my rpw_downtown_v2. I still have the VMF files and pictures to prove it if requested. :) Most of my work on this was done in 2009. I uploaded RPW_Downtown_v2 to gamebanana on August 24th 2012, which is earlier than the other uploads you mentioned. The 15 year old zip on gamebanana dates my bsp file to 2009. But it was also running on the ClanVortex server for a few years before that. R.I.P. ThePro
I'm lysergic!! That's crazy haha. Great video tho man. I remember the map back in 2010/11 when servers were packed running on full vanilla darkrp, no p2p donator bs. I had contact with one of The Pros friend on steam also wondering what happened to his friend.
I feel the same with steam accounts and some game maps Inactive steam accounts gives me nostalgia + creepy feeling of what could have happened to that person why he is not using it? Etc... And if i talk about game maps The thing you said "You are not afraid of being alone You are afraid of not being alone" + Its feels like something really wrong at this place and now you are the only one Where are all the other people And why is a big city empty And the effect or feeling intensifies if you like to imagine of being in that virtual place and also depends on your nature and imagination and love towards games I cant describe it properly it may seem like WTF is this guy writing but people like me will understand ! And i love this feeling its a combination of Sad + nostalgia + fear + emptiness + imagination 🙂
It all stems from the fear on the unknown, of which is a very common fear that us most of us have. I never played online so these maps don't bother me as much, but it does certainly bother others
To me the scariest thing in all of source is the collection of overdone corpses that can be found throughout the hl2 campaign. The first time i played hl2, i noclipped around the sewer area because i was so terrified. I actually ended up skipping the airboat sequence and then i traversed half of water hazard without an airboat, traversing toxic pools with noclip.
It scares me how it’s just soo lonely playing there alone,I always have a gun in that map as it’s just disturbing to the point that it always feels like I’m being watched
Even as someone who never regularly played Gmod you can still feel the eeriness. Watching youtubers play it, watching RP videos. Gmod is just an old game and at the height of horror and creepypastas it shows players imaginations.
Dang, with me being isolated from multiplayer for a long time in Garry's Mod, this hits very hard, I usually do stuff to distract me such as build imaginary dogfights or something but when I got bored, kenopsia kicked in and immediately felt uneasy and making me leave the game - Another thing is that the brain is easier to scare if you are alone and have nobody to talk to, I have discovered this in Phasmophobia, when you're alone, you're on the edge of crapping your pants, yet if you're with all 4 players, you're a lot more calm and collected, but when your teammates start dying, your brain starts to panic
I got Garry's Mod when I had just turned 13, and DarkRP was the first thing I wanted to play. I am now going on 22 and I have 1,627 hours in Garry's Mod. The majority of which were spent having some of the best times of my childhood. Propkilling, propsurfing, playing music through your microphone, going on RDMing sprees with your buddies when you got bored with a server, making fun of admins, jesus I can't tell you how many times I must've built the exact same gun dealer store in rp_downtown. In the same building, almost every time. The real ones will remember what must've been every Garry's Mod player's coming of age moment: "Why are there so many errors? Why can't I see the guns? What's going on? What do you mean I need to buy CS:S?"
Sometimes I will get on an rp map just to screw around. Eventually I will walk through the map and start feeling that loneliness. It always feels weird to me to look around and imagine all the interactions that happened on perhaps this one street corner or the other. People plotting to raid, the loner sitting in a corner, printing money. The times when war broke out because of rdm. It'll be even more sad once Gmod eventually dies.
This is where I spent most of my time on G mod went through a role-play phase, very fun. Sometimes I make a really detailed house while everyone else has these boring looking bases and then hide I’d hide my printer in like a stove and you’d had to go through three different buttons in sequence to get to it. People either wouldn’t rob the the place, or wouldn’t find anything because I didn’t make it look like an obvious base it just look like a nice house. There were also multiple servers where I was just rich to the point I’d sell guns for two dollars because I don’t know if it was common or I just got really lucky but fairly often there was some dude who just had a lot of money and was running around dropping like 5 million at a time.
I had a pretty good scare one time playing this map alone, I was playing around with some mods when suddenly I hear one of the doors open and close, it really freaked me out and I shut the game off immediately, I don't know if it was just the maps ambiance or an npc mod I downloaded but it really freaked me out.
I miss downtown_v2. I actually flunked classes in 2008 when I was in middle school because I played SammyServers/ByB too much, they used rp_downtown_v2
Vacant Areas make me sad knowing that these maps used to be filled with people, good or bad and it gives me some depression knowing that im in a place with no people but still hearing the distant sounds of the past
This map has some nastolgia for me, I'll never forget the time I spent as a hobo terrorizing RP servers, launching harassment campaigns with fellow hobos from the small sovereign nation of Hoboken
When I was a little kid sometimes I was playing gmod alone and I was getting scared so I started to put citizens, ragdolls and some funny dupes to make me forgot what did I scared those times.... Perfect
I tried this in this location where conventions like Toys Fair and Creator's Frontier/Market used to be attended annually once (or twice) a year until 2020, where the pandemic hit the streets. It's silent and eerie, almost like the entire establishment was abandoned for good. Even the hotel in front of the building is devoid of lighting, yet i couldn't stop glancing and staring at the poor building. It used to be where weebs and geeks gather around in broad daylight waiting for their entry, and the warmth is still there, looming...
It's funny to think that even if there was a ghost in a gmod map, it has nothing to do with it being haunted. Some person had to put that there with the hope that someday someone would find it, that person probably had a good laugh imagining the players reaction. There something so magical about acknowledging that there's nothing cursed or haunted about that, that it was made by someone just like any of us, someone who had a lot of fun in the process. Rest in peace, man.
The thing is is that there is a effects that you can add in source engine called "hairball" it's literally a shadow that is meant to constantly be in your peripheral FOV in game. Everybody forgets about this...
i thought this was going to be a shitty creepypasta video and i physically said "fuck you" at the burned body cut-in at the big-city segment, but i am honestly surprised how you explained everything. good job, man.
I suppose its kind of weird to see a server or map where hundreds of people play and make memories with something chaotic always happening and go from that to a completely silent and deserted ghost town where you can just hear the echos of other people
I have always been confused about the zombie cries you sometimes hear in GMod maps, a lot of them sound nearly, if not identical to the howls of Bloodsucker or Chimera mutants from the STALKER series
Hi. I want to say this loud and clear to get this off my chest, I am the creator of the 4chan post that you can see at 4:20. I made the post after watching a video by The Librarian about why source games give players a creepy feeling as a form of a shitty joke or even a trollpasta. I never actually expected anyone to use it in videos like this or even the gmod iceberg explained video by endy, but I want to say it right here right now, I am sorry for making that post. I don't know why I thought it be funny to make it and I want to apologize to those I tricked into thinking the ghost thing was real and I'd like to show respect to ThePro if he actually did pass away. I am not asking for forgiveness in any way shape or form, but all I'd like to say is sorry and shall never make anything like that ever again
Hey man don't fret about it, I appreciate the interesting topic regardless for the discussion of the video. Clearly people were really interested. ThePro is still unknown to me about his passing, but it doesn't mean we cant explore some of the interesting theories surrounding the map. Thanks for making an impact in my video career.
fuuuuuck this was a really good video but I was literally halfway through making a video about the map cause I was thinking like on one is talking about this map right now and it has like stuff tied too it but honestly this was a great video
this ghost thing is similar to the ghost I've seen on tf2 where it was a scout all grey that ran passed these two doors on the map called slender elementary when I played it solo
That's because your brain is tricking you that you're not alone. Actually, you're alone in any Source/Gmod maps. Calm down, you're alone. It's just ambient sounds from Half-Life 2. You feel scared 'cause you never played Half-Life 2.
@@JohnnyTheGamer yeah but the only creepy feeling I experience is that some source map are feel abandoned and gloomy. It like someone did something tragic incident or someone here only dark indoors. But I never got the same feeling on Gmod maybe because I play any source game before this. But not all is just valve art direction which is emphasize the atmosphere and tone.
I was really bored.A hurricane was going with nothing to do. So I joined this map for nostalgia. Felt so uncomfortable and couldn’t get back to sleep at all. The entire moment was full of dread and it was a pretty bizarre feeling. But that’s just kinda it. No spooky ghost, no friend who’s been offline for months, it was just creepy and felt like something was watching me. I think that’s when a map succeeds. It started out as a great map for role play and ended as a pretty creepy and dreadful place to be in.
i wish servers ran maps other than rp_downtown_tits_v2. been the same map for the last 6+ years now. I remember like 7-10 years ago, servers competed with unique n cool maps

It's all very spooky.
why did i move here? , i guess it was the weather
things will be very different.
I just found this channel and im already in love with that voice. I might stick around for a little longer
Dude this is one of my great fears, also you gotta keep this channel up man its awesome dude also I love the classical music in the background.
3:19 - look at the left side
I SHIT
Yeah i've noticed it too! Probably edited.
ohgod
What I don't see anything
It’s a burned corpse texture from Half-Life 2
There were a couple of servers that attempted to bring back the classic DarkRP, but they didn't usually last very long.

I actually did download a modded version of this where there were ghosts but it was only npcs with black paint disappearing when I got close to them
Yeah that's the main one that everybody talks about, I have it too
who else grew up on the streets of rp_downtown
3:52 That actually scared me a little lmao. Nice vid man, keep it up!
lol just trump popping up
4:37 I honestly feel like a better term for at least how I feel when I'm in these maps is Scopophobia or the fear of being watched. Sure the maps were intended to be played with other people but its not like a forbidden thing to play the map alone. When you do play it alone, the feeling is certainly elevated. Regardless, the feeling of emptiness is forever present.
"When playing these maps, it makes you think someone is gonna hop out right around the corner."
Oh yes, 12 year old gangsters trying to rob you every 5 minutes. The true DarkRP experience.
It's creepy when you play special forces group when it's empty too
You play that Mobile game too
I PLAY THAT GAME
I play with zombies
BRUH I USED TO PLAY THAT LOL
Play zombie mode + scary map
That frickin scary af ngl
I find it incredibly peaceful yet alarming, probably because i played a ton a darkrp. It just gives me this feeling of pure chaos
Glad to see a more serious (and respectful) take on this whole haunting thing. I've seen so many videos of people doing "ghost hunts" on this map it boggles the mind. This however, was great content.
Rest in Peace to him. This was depressing.
The only creepy moment I ever had was of a mod that put an intentional stalker in your game, I didn't remember downloading it but it freaked me the fuck out when I turned to see a Dr. Breen standing behind me with a stupid creepy ass looking face. Never really felt lonely or being watched wandering around places like downtown, bigcity, contruct, etc. though.
How's the mod called I want it!
R.I.P. ThePro
Thank you for your contribution to this games history (and mine as a child) im glad you enjoyed the video ❤️🤟
I'm lysergic!! That's crazy haha. Great video tho man. I remember the map back in 2010/11 when servers were packed running on full vanilla darkrp, no p2p donator bs. I had contact with one of The Pros friend on steam also wondering what happened to his friend.
Thanks man for making this video possible! Props and safe travels friend.
@@stellarr1 my pleasure man, more than happy to be apart of the video and the darkrp community :)
I would give anything to have DarkRP back
I feel the same with steam accounts and some game maps
Inactive steam accounts gives me nostalgia + creepy feeling of what could have happened to that person why he is not using it? Etc...
And if i talk about game maps
The thing you said
"You are not afraid of being alone
You are afraid of not being alone"
+ Its feels like something really wrong at this place and now you are the only one
Where are all the other people
And why is a big city empty
And the effect or feeling intensifies if you like to imagine of being in that virtual place and also depends on your nature and imagination and love towards games
I cant describe it properly
it may seem like WTF is this guy writing but people like me will understand !
And i love this feeling its a combination of
Sad + nostalgia + fear + emptiness + imagination 🙂
It all stems from the fear on the unknown, of which is a very common fear that us most of us have. I never played online so these maps don't bother me as much, but it does certainly bother others
There’s actually no ghost because the creator can’t haunt the map do to the map being lua and models
O yeah cuz int the hl2 called clarlie or something
Maps arent made with lua codes...
@@alphenex8974 when u put some events or mods that are already pre installed in a map they are lua maps
@@user-rv9ys8dp2y they are not "lua map" they are just maps, you can run lua codes in hammer but that didnt exist before the release of gmod 13
@@alphenex8974 if they have mods yes
Here before this channel blows up
(Why hasn't it yet?)
As a foreigner, it is very difficult for me to hear what you said, so thanks for adding subtitles.
Me, an intellectual,
immediately recognizing
Waltz no. 2 in the end of the video.
oh wait the background music is chopin nocturne op8 no2
4:11 “but when it’s the opposite and nobody around to complete your memories itsallitisnt-“
I had a pretty good scare one time playing this map alone, I was playing around with some mods when suddenly I hear one of the doors open and close, it really freaked me out and I shut the game off immediately, I don't know if it was just the maps ambiance or an npc mod I downloaded but it really freaked me out.
Imagine getting jumpscared and wake up in skyrim "Hey, you finally woke up.
I miss downtown_v2. I actually flunked classes in 2008 when I was in middle school because I played SammyServers/ByB too much, they used rp_downtown_v2
Vacant Areas make me sad knowing that these maps used to be filled with people, good or bad and it gives me some depression knowing that im in a place with no people but still hearing the distant sounds of the past
first time i watched this video , i felt kinda scared about rp_downtown_v2, but now, i feel relaxed and at peace
interesting
This map has some nastolgia for me, I'll never forget the time I spent as a hobo terrorizing RP servers, launching harassment campaigns with fellow hobos from the small sovereign nation of Hoboken
Source 1 is like that creepy kid who sits in the back of the classroom and just stares at you. and Source 2 is like that typical cool kid of the class
Liminal spaces... Ever since I learned they existed I can't get away from them, it's as if they follow me everywhere I go
Old source maps have such a Nostalgic and yet strange feeling.
Oh my god. I didn’t know that he actually (supposedly) died. I thought it was just a rumor made for the rumors of ghosts in the map
Saddest thing is when you come back to same places, without same peoples.
Nostalgia can hurt.
When I was a little kid sometimes I was playing gmod alone and I was getting scared so I started to put citizens, ragdolls and some funny dupes to make me forgot what did I scared those times.... Perfect
This has 5 minutes but has the energy of a 1:30 hours long documentary.
You might be surprised with my newest video then
@@stellarr1 dude...
I love the amount of mystery and things Half Life and GMod hold in each other.
This is probably the weirdest rumor about a gmod map I have ever heard
What causes these sounds in the maps are called *env_soundscapes* , basically scripts that is a schedule for what sounds to play.
i thought this was going to be a shitty creepypasta video and i physically said "fuck you" at the burned body cut-in at the big-city segment, but i am honestly surprised how you explained everything.
good job, man.
Dude, Can you not make me piss myself!? 2020 is already scary enough.
4:37 Shostakovich: waltz no 2
Gmod empty maps gives me something of peace
The thumbnail is terrifying! Good work man.
It would be even better if "corpse" were sticking out from behind the wall or something
Thanks for making an impact in my video career.
fuuuuuck this was a really good video but I was literally halfway through making a video about the map cause I was thinking like on one is talking about this map right now and it has like stuff tied too it but honestly this was a great video
id be glad to help if you want to make a video on this map and we can collab! just let me know. Any content creators input in this community is great.
@@stellarr1 I really appreciate it but you covered pretty much everything very well
Thank you for explaining in a comforting way! I really like this video
this ghost thing is similar to the ghost I've seen on tf2 where it was a scout all grey that ran passed these two doors on the map called slender elementary when I played it solo
I feel scared when I play source maps on Gmod.
That's because your brain is tricking you that you're not alone. Actually, you're alone in any Source/Gmod maps. Calm down, you're alone. It's just ambient sounds from Half-Life 2. You feel scared 'cause you never played Half-Life 2.
Thanks for telling me.
@@JohnnyTheGamer its also becouse how big maps are you feel like isnt that big enough for me? I cant be the only person here!
It started out as a great map for role play and ended as a pretty creepy and dreadful place to be in.
this video explained well, nice choice of classical by the way
3:20 clever clever. you but a corpse at the corner, made me jump at first but clever.
You have a great narration voice. Keep up the good work
i wish servers ran maps other than rp_downtown_tits_v2. been the same map for the last 6+ years now. I remember like 7-10 years ago, servers competed with unique n cool maps
