Goldberg and Balsam had a large joint repertoire but recorded only four works officially, the Brahms Sonatas and Schumann's A minor Sonata. In addition there are broadcast acetates or tapes of another performance of the Schumann, Dvorak's Four Romantic Pieces and one or two encores. Their Brahms interpretations have always been well thought of, especially the more lyrical first two sonatas. The more heroic attitudes of the D minor Sonata did not come so easily, to Goldberg in particular; but all in all, these are treasurable documents of the artistry of two of the most likeable, refined musicians of their era.

The great joy of this excellent remastering enables us to appreciate today what was not only a partnership of great refinement, but one of intensity and mutual understanding. These remastered recordings are luminous. Goldberg and Balsam were renowned in their day. Imperative listening. Thank you guys for posting these.

I was a student of Szymon Goldberg at Juilliard in the 80s. I would love to talk to you about him and connect. He was a great teacher as well and really changed my life, taught me things that no one else was talking about and made me the violinist I am today.

Goldberg was like Lipati, loaned to earth from heaven. But this shows a meeting of minds as well. Balsam is the perfect accompanist here. Not just accompanist but equal partner.
Played like this the music is compelling for its sweet honesty rather than sheer power. The power is real, but not the aim. It emerges without diminution, because they play without sentimentality - they get on with it, and play as angels. Just enough flexibility to be natural. These performances are selfless and just present the inspiration of Brahms without "apparent" intervention.
A sort of miracle. I have listened several times now, staggered and unable to add to the comments.
Now I have it is no more than tu'pence worth.
Best wishes from George in Herefordshire, UK.

My Lord, what beautiful music these two men play! I’ve only listened to the first sonata so far, but already, I keep having the feeling I’m listening to this sonata for the first time! For me, that’s definitely a sign that I’m going to be listening to as many recordings by Goldberg and Balsam as I can, both together and separately. Thanks so much for uploading these sonatas!

This is a revelation to me! I've known and played the sonatas most of my life, and thought no one could even approach "King" David Oistrakh and S. Richter,
but these give the music a different, and wonderful, kind of intensity and deep feeling. I should have heard both of them during my years in NYC but, sadly, I did not.

@@EElgar1857 I heard Oistrakh and Richter play the d-minor Sonata in Philadelphia's Academy of Music : much too large hall, of course, and it did not leave much of an impression...! Heard Nathan Milstein with Arthur Balsam in Düsseldorf in the same piece, and that was also not ideal, albeit in a better size hall (the Robert Schumannsaal, I do not remember...?)

An interesting if rather silly remark and causes me to wonder if it means the recorded sound of a violin or the real sound. No matter how well recorded these, despite digital remastering are old recordings. They only approximate the sound of a top class instrument played with consummate skill in an appropriate acoustic, revealing very little of the nuances. Between that and this internet sound there is a microphone, recording machine, recording tape, a presumably vinyl record and digital copy. All are interpretations, which tends to be forgotten in these days of MP3 'songs'. But it is good to have even this of Goldberg's playing.
