Star Trek Adventures: Are you Starfleet material? This RPG has the answer 🌌 RPG Review & Mechanics
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 авг 2024
- Star Trek Adventures is a comprehensive tabletop RPG put out by Modiphius in 2017, and this core book spans three eras in the timeline (although really only two). The book contains the rules and enough setting material for tons of adventuring on foot or on the bridge of your Federation starship.

I agree with your critique of the books. It's a hallmark of Modiphius's games that they build an excellent game but fail to organize the material in a DM friendly way. Great vid! By far the most on point review about this fun game.
The Bajoran wormhole connects the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants, not Delta.
Hannah Strom This is correct. I misspoke.
Thank you
This eerily gives the vibe of the William Shatner Star Trek Con sketch on Satur. Night Live. The fans correct Shatner on minutia concerning the character he played.

I think your critique about the flavor text has great merit. It's one of my own observations of the book, and something I was critical of as well. Mainly because you can not presume that everyone picking up the book will be a Trekie and/or a lore encyclopedia. I found myself skipping a lot of those boxes as I didn't know what they were referencing as I haven't yet watched all the Trek content out there. If they spent that space giving a hard 4th wall breaking explanation of the history, timeline and lore they would have done themselves a better service. But you are seeing that now in the release of a Players and GMs guide that are supposedly on the way.
Thanks for the straightforward overview, most of the reviews I've seen haven't gotten to the point as well as you have!
Thanks. My philosophy is to treat people's time with respect!
I love Star Trek Adventures its a phenomenal game and I have been running a series of it for about six months now. I own a copy of every supplement put out so far and have my preorder in for the new TOS era corebook which is the same as the base corebook but specifically written for the TOS era and with nothing of the other era's of play. I am super excited to see what is next for this game because I absolutely love it so.
Thank you so so so so much for this. I'm the only Trekkie in my group of otherwise tabletop RPG loving group of friends. I begged them all to play a one shot of ST for my birthday instead of any presents. (OK I didn't have to beg that hard, they do love me.) But I've been having a really tough time finding a succinct way to give them the bare bones of both ST and the mechanics without overloading them with canon info. Not to mention, I was having a hard time wrapping my head around the mechanics myself.
Glad I could help!
I'mshocked! I actually want to play a Star Trek game now... huh.
Thanks for the great review! That map at 2:13 is based on the book Star Trek: Star Charts. It is pretty much considered as close to canon as a print book can be. The author matched up real-world star positions to all the mentioned locations throughout the series. However, in the map you show (presumably from the game), the entire area of 'known space' (with the local governments) has been exaggerated in size compared to the rest of the galaxy. That entire local 'star trek' area of known space is actually MUCH smaller compared to the size of the galaxy. The Star Trek: Star Charts book gives a more accurate relative size. FYI
I've watched all of Star Trek as well. I've also played STO and pretty much all the other video and computer games. Also read a lot of the wiki.
Me and some friends plan on doing a game of Adventures sometime this year.
The wormhole links the Alpha and the Gamma quadrants (not the Alpha and the Delta)
Dave. The quality and depth of your videos always impresses me. Thank you for another gem! :)
I did not think I'd really be interested in an RPG like this... then I watched your video.
Great review and overview of the system. I picked up the starter set and watching this is a good refresher on the rules.
Fantastic video very well explained. Thank you.
As always, an amazing take on Star Trek Adventures. Your video content is quite comprehensive, I always show your videos to my players before running a game.
One thing I would like to point out is that if something takes 5 Stress in one attack after cover+resistance will lead to an "injury", not just being reduced to 0. So even if an enemy has 10 or more Stress, if you get lucky a single 5 Stress attack can take them out. Injuries also care whether it was done non-lethal or lethal.
But yes, you could be knocked out by falling rock props even if you have Stress (Hit Points) remaining.
Also ships suffer breaches in the same way. You could have a ton of shields left, but that console is going to explode from a 5+ Stress hit.
Great video! Thanks for making this video as I am planning to buy this sometime in the future!
An excellent introduction, thank you!

Another great introduction!
Great review, thanks
Loving your videos, bro
Do you think you'll do a review of Captain's Log? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Great Review.
i've got the alpha and beta quadrant books of this system. do you also discuss other star trek systems like last unicorn games, decipher, fasa, and starfleet battles?
I haven’t read those yet. I’ll look into them.
Another great video! I hadn't planned to get this because of some of the reviews for Conan I'd seen, but I might give it a try. I wonder how long it will take for someone to make a dice rolling app for this with the LCARS aesthetic so you can feel like you're really on the bridge punching commands into your station!
That is an awesome idea!
Thank you for the video. At 9:30 you have the damage dice listed but did not mention that you add a # of damage dice equal to the character's Security discipline score
Great review! Not impressed with the 2d20 system tho.
1:41: Star Trek Animated Series is missing.
I wish I had friends for this 😭
someone please find out what song is playing the background
Am I right in thinking the Supporting Character thing sounds a lot like the troupe roleplaying of Ars Magica, with its grogs? I could see where something like that would work well for ST; maybe instead of a magus and companion, you've got a bridge character and an away team character.
So the lower you roll the better?! The irony of this game being perfect for Wil Weaton is palpable!
For context Weaton is a notoriously bad roller when it comes to TTRPGs lol
If the relevant Focus (hand-to-hand) is a Security-related Focus and Security is rated 2, then why does a 3 (instead of a 2 or lower) on the die grant two successes? Shouldn't that Focus only grant an extra success on a 2 or 1 on the die?
So they need a book 2.0 then.
The rulebook issues sounds like a major turn-off.
Nice content, but music is too loud and masks voice!
Yeah, this is from a year ago. I’ve learned a lot since then. And still trying to improve.
@@DaveThaumavore would you consider posting it without music?
Woah. This all sounds overly complicated. Better watch this video again.
I could have used a LOT less LCARS. Just present the information. I don't even care about the flavor text boxes... it's the over-use of LCARS that is so problematic with this read. LCARS is great as visual design for a TV show, but it's horrific as actual interface and for readability.
The LCARS totally got in the way of reading this. It's a very difficult book to read because of the mis-use of LCARS.
The game sounds very cool, it is just. A. Damm Thame that the rulebook is terribly written.
So you don't really play a character like in d&d? What I mean is there isn't a way for me to play a Cardassian or Tal Shiar spy? Or a defector who left their culture and joined Stat Fleet? Sounds like you're "limited" on your character ideas.
There are continuous expansions being published that detail all kinds of new options. This is just the core book that covers mostly just Starfleet.
@@DaveThaumavore Thanks for the response. I'm excited to try a star trek game and hope this one fits.
You actually can play anything you want those options are in the corebook and the several supplements they have put out since it all depends on the game your GM wants to run. Also now there is a corebook specifically for playing a Klingon game.
So..??? Inverted d&d? Sorry if im dumb...
Another typical Modiphius game. Overly complicated with a poorly designed rulebook. I like the licenses Modiphius has tackled but wish they'd learn better game and book design.
I probably would like Mophidious stuff...except every one of their rulebooks are a grammatical nightmare.
