Tabletop may not be the final frontier in gaming, but it is one littered with successful and unsuccessful RPGs. These are the histories of the publishers who attempted to create a roleplaying game in the Star Trek universe.
    Corrections:
I mistakenly refer to Amarillo Design Bureau as the Armadillo Design Bureau. That’s embarrassing. Modiphius' first 2D20 game was in fact Mutant Chronicles 3e, not Achtung! Cthulhu as I say in the video.
It was in fact Ross Isaacs at Last Unicorn Games who developed the Icon system, not “Rob Isaacs” as I mistakenly said.

This brings back a lot of memories. When I was in college in the early 80s, our gaming group played the FASA edition, both Federation and Klingon campaigns. But since the ship-to-ship combat rules were janky, we used the Starfleet Battles rules instead. Still have my SFB rules, but lost the FASA rules somewhere, somehow years ago.

DS9 is a great choice Jordan. probably my favorite as well. I remember asking my parents to stay up and watch it in the 90's cause I was still young and had a bed time of 8 pm and DS9 aired at 9. Absolutely awesome era of television and a wicked weeknight routine - finish dinner, wash plates, watch amazing sci-fi, do your homework! Great overview of Trek RPGs. Not too many people know about the Heritage game or the Japanese-published ones. I've been a Trekker for 50 years and I played the Heritage, FASA, and Task Force games. The reason Starfleet Battles and Prime Directive are not "Star Trek" is because they originally got their license from the Starfleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph published by Ballantine Books.
I'd love to hear more about your experience with STA. I've struggled with all the moving parts of the game system.

That’s super interesting, thank you! I’d seen some references to the technical manual in my research, but hadn’t connected all the dots!
I’ve really enjoyed running STA as I find the mechanics really bring out the technical capabilities of the characters - they feel like highly trained Starfleet officiers - and I like how collaborative it makes things feel, as if these specialists are really working together

@@jordansorcery Personally I find STA a bit messy and clunky. Nowhere near as clunky as FASA Trek but still noticably not fun for me to GM. I find using Traveller works really well for Trek and keeping things simple whilst allowing characters to show off their skills. I'm not sure if it was in a video or on a stream, but Matt Colville recently shared an anecdote about working on one of the Trek RPGs at Last Unicorn Games. Apparently the Paramount execs didn't understand the concept of RPGs fully, and wanted to prevent players from making their own characters, or restrict certain aspects of how characters could be created, citing that "there are no overweight, disabled, or 'unattractive' people in Starfleet, the Federation is a utopia." The writers/designers only managed to make them back down by finding examples *in the shows and movies* of overweight, disabled, and 'unattractive' characters from Starfleet. Pretty interesting insight into how studios sometimes look at their properties and the kind of control they seek when licensing them.

    • @jordansorcery
      @jordansorcery  Год назад +1

That is very interesting, I didn't even know Colville had worked on them! I'm not surprised about the executive dissonance, if recent D&D events have taught me anything its that there is and always has been a distinction between the money focused people at the top and the creative people and players at the bottom. Sadly despite all the artistry and effort RPGs are most often still commercial products after all - its just extra disappointing to hear that the then stewards of such a hopeful and inclusive world as Trek would be so brazenly exclusionary!

This was a great video, thanks. Really well researched. Reminded me of the day I picked up my FASA 2nd Edition Deluxe from Hamleys. We played it to death, and I still have it with my ship recognition manuals and klingon books. Loved the way the Tactical Combat Simulator meshed with the RPG so crew rolls influenced the battle, engineer giving more power, helm allowing more move, etc. I played the Dixie Gambit, it was a great story, espionage to the core. I also remember other adventures such as Orion Ruse and Termination 1456, where you played Klingon characters. FASA losing the licence was a great shame. Their source books were brilliant and so well written.

Oh wow, Hamleys was such a treat back in the day! That crew collaboration aspect is so great, I like that STA enables something similar - it's a fantastic aspect of Trek and I think it often makes armed conflict much more interesting in the Trek universe if it is a collective action with lots of mini-challenges rather than just a party of warriors shooting at something. Glad to hear Dixie Gambit is as good as it looks - definitely on my list to check out in more detail!

It amazes me companies like Heritage in the golden age of wargaming can go broke. It was a period when wargaming was at its height and role playing had emerged in full force in every genre and people wanted miniatures. Skirmish gaming was also huge, and that was the hybrid wargaming and almost role playing of 1 miniature representing 1 combatant (as opposed to 1 figure representing 20-100 actual soldiers in wargaming).

I have played most of the games you talk about here. And I will admit that I feel that the 2D20 version is my favorite. Mostley do to the way it incorporates science teamwork into the core rules. That and the background material written in the fluff is up there with the FASA title. Especialy the Kinglon book that was a delight just to read. (I admit to being a fan of Decandido's work) I just hope that they can keep publishing this game for years to come.

Years ago...maybe 2002 or 2003?...I ran a short campaign for Star Trek using Atlas Games's WaRP system (Over the Edge 2nd Ed's rules) and FASA's version of the Trek setting. I enjoyed the heck out of it, but it's the only Trek roleplaying I've really done, which seems odd. I've still got a bunch of the FASA stuff and most of the Last Unicorn lines. I should probably dust them off and do something with them.

Star wars just seems like it's particularly hard to fit your own story into it without either memorizing the timeline up til the point you're playing at or completely disregarding it to do your own thing. Sure, in Star Wars you could all play four hairless psychic teddy bears in a trenchcoat, or three aquatic aliens and one psychic rock to act as an aquarium ornament in a spaceship full of water (both ideas me and my friends tried to pitch to our increasingly despairing DM) but overall you only had to know one thing timeline-wise - _are we pre- or post-Empire?_
Whereas Star Trek seems like it would be especially prone to priggish DMs and players going "No no, the Federation was still at war with the Romulans at this time, you can't play a Romulan. And no, you can't be a Cardassian federation officer" or complaining that they shouldn't be encountering Borg because there were no Borg at this point in the timeline in the Delta Quadrant.

I find that like any licensed setting it totally comes down to your GM and players, and what kind of stories they want to tell/participate in. I've been lucky enough to play in groups that put our own stories and fun at the heart of the game - meaning that inconsistencies or contradictions are okay if it benefits our story. No one from Paramount is going to be looking over our shoulder after all! I've definitely experienced GMs that were too beholden to the 'real' story for my taste, but thankfully I've been able to avoid that for the most part.

@@jordansorcery I mean neither was Starfleet Voyages... the difference being that Starships and Spacemen was far more popular, I'd argue the most popular game to play with (nobody I knew played Heritage Trek, we all had it, no one played it) in the time before FASA.
Nowadays I'd say that there is certainly a segment of the Trek gaming community (my group included) that have checked out of the officially licensed products for what we consider "better" unlicensed, or lapsed license representations. Part of it for me is the cost inflation problem of modern games... Modiphius price points are ridiculous. I can get a new player into a fully realized, very Trek flavored game for half the price of the starter set, or even free if it's WNMHGB or Far Trek; two games which are extremely easy to run, capture the essence of the older series with great fidelity, and have lots of loving fan support.
Even in the not-OSR type of play you have great products like Boldly Go! that offer a great, modern take on the genre, combined with modern shared story-telling aspects, in a package a fraction of the licensed rules-bloated line. And that's the key... Modiphius needs customers to keep buying book after book to maintain the licensing fee so you get an operations manual, and an alpha quadrant supplement, and a shipyards book, and on and on... in full color hardback at a price that would have bought an entire core set of the older games... these other options don't, so the additional supplements are driven by player and GM need, not investors - the very Roddenberry-esque theme of rampant capitalism.
Unlicensed or not, the play experience is, in my opinion, more Trek for less money.
And I have to say "Armadillo," and "BESTiary" (far improved from the worstiary) from the other video. :)
