One Good Annuity? Single-Premium-Immediate-Annuity (SPIA) Agreement

  • At first glance, there is a huge amount of disagreement over whether annuities are "bad" or "good."
The basic battle lines appear to be drawn between the investment sector (think, for example, Ken Fisher), on the one hand, and the life-insurance industry (e.g., Tom Hegna), on the other.
I began this project with the intention of doing a "pro"-and-"con" video, like several others I've recorded recently.
    For example:
Should you insure your kids or not?
    • Kids' Life Insurance? ...
Or...should you take your pension as a lump sum or in installments?
    • Pension Lump Sum Pros ...
But, as my investigations into annuities progressed, I discovered -- to my amazement -- that there was more AGREEMENT than I had predicted.
(The agreement is arguably widespread -- even if my titular "all agree" takes some artistic and self-promotional liberties!)
I decided to report on what I found.
In this presentation, then, you can listen to (and read about!) what people on "both sides" of the annuity debate have to say about the Single-Premium-Immediate Annuity, usually termed the "SPIA."

Accumulation and decumulation. Subtle but important distinctions when talking about annuities. Thank you!

Great video! And the clarity of your explanation is impressive. Essentially you have articulated what my own feeling has been around annuities, but I could not dissect it as you have. Thank you for doing this. Instant subscriber.

Thanks for your reassurance. Spia is my way of going for me at this stage of my life . I’m going with the annuity man ! Stan . I was almost faked into another agent with too many variables in the plan he was working on for me . Stan helped me along with your you tube info . Going with a myga for 3 years and roll it into a spia .

Great video. I would be careful about one of your claims made with reference to the first Market Watch article. Purchase of a SPIA by definition does involve a loss of liquidity and therefore potential surrender fee charges. If you purchase one with the firm conviction that you will never need access to the cash value, no problem.

Thank you for this information. I refuse to but life insurance because I have eternal life and I don't believe in death. Also my dad was a banker that would not teach me anything about money and building wealth. He is an alcoholic narcissist that tried to keep me and other people dependent on him. I hate him and I disowned him because he's with the mafia, he abuses people and he does bad business. He faked his death, by the way. Others who did the same thing "miraculously" came back to life. Nope, you said you died so now you're dead to me, all of you.

What a bunch of crap. You failed to mention that you are giving up your principal to generate a cash flow. I can take the same cash and generate similar income from dividend payments alone. When I die I still have my principal plus capital appreciation. You conveniently failed to mention that fact. I learned a long time ago you don't get rich listening to slick salespeople.
