Stock Buybacks: Are Share-Repurchase Agreements Bad?
Stock buybacks go by various names -- including 'share buybacks,' 'share repurchases,' 'float shrinks,' etc. But, whatever you call them, they stir up controversy and have been the subject of much attention lately.
However, I think that a lot of the discussion concerning these tendentious financial maneuvers has been unnecessarily partisan (in the political sense).
In this video, I argue that buybacks -- which, arguably, used to be illegal -- are indeed negative (in that they are doing harm to corporations and to the economy).
But, the reasons that I give may be somewhat surprising to viewers you are used to the typical left-right, talking-head bureaucratic bickering.

Bitcoin Has 'No Intrinsic Value'? Analyzing Jamie Dimon's Assertion
Просмотров 812 года назад
Questions relating to cryptocurrencies in general and Bitcoin in specific usually elicit highly polarizing answers. One such question concerns whether Bitcoin has an "intrinsic value." Recently, high-profile financier Jamie Dimon disparaged the flagship digital coin by asserting that: "Bitcoin is worthless." Warren Buffett's second, and Charlie Munger, is on the record making essentially the sa...
Annuitization & Settlement: What Happens With An Annuity Contract?
Просмотров 4013 года назад
The transition between an annuity's "pay-in" (or accumulation / funding) phase and its payout (or "decumulation") phase is marked by an event referred to as "annuitization" or "settlement." What do these terms mean? Are they different? How do they relate to one another? And what actually occurs when an annuity is annuitized or settled? In this video, I'll sketch basic answers to these questions...
RMDs Explained in 5 Minutes: Required-Minimum-Distribution Basics
Просмотров 14 тыс.3 года назад
Required-Minimum Distributions, or "RMDs," can be both complicated and confusing. And there are numerous subtleties and portfolio-specific caveats. However, there are also a few basic, foundational points about RMDs that can be explained in a fairly simple and straightforward way. In this video, I attempt to provide an overview of RMDs. I frame my brief discussion around the six (6) information...
Annuity Payout Rates Vs. Interest Rates: Confusing Rates of Return
Просмотров 4613 года назад
Annuities can be confusing enough without potentially misleading insurance-company advertising, marketing, and sales presentations. Unfortunately, in some contexts whether intentionally or unintentionally annuity payout rates are often confused (or conflated) with interest rates. However, the two are very different! Payout rates simply express the ratio between the annual payout and the premium...

Biggest Life-Insurance Policy in the World: Who Owns It? [Billionaire] Happening upon an article appearing in the Chicago Tribune newspaper from 1936, I learned that industrialist Pierre S. Dupont owned most life insurance of any American alive at that time. It made me wonder: What's the biggest life-insurance, today? And... just who owns the largest insurance policy in the world? Pension Max Pros & Cons: 'Maximization' Schemes Explained & Critiqued
Просмотров 4853 года назад
Is there a pension option that doesn't appear on your benefit-election forms? Many life-insurance agents will say that the answer is "YES!" This so-called "hidden" pension option is often referred to as a "Pension-Maximization" strategy, or "Pension Max," for short. The plan basically makes judicious use of life-insurance and annuity products to try to create a retirement possibility that is, i...
Does Steven Spielberg Have a $1.2 Billion Life-Insurance Policy?

Lists of financial trivia sometimes make reference to a supposed life-insurance policy owned by or, at least, on the life of famed Hollywood moviemaker Steven Spielberg. The contract is alleged to be worth some $1.2 billion! [*] This claim is repeated on various "Did You Know," trivia, and other fun-fact / weird-fact-related posts. In this video, I take a look at the record to see if this claim...
Annuities & Pensions: What's the Difference? [Compare & Contrast]
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.3 года назад
Annuities and pensions are sometimes represented as if they were the same things. Indeed, they share many features in common. For example, both instruments: (1) Can be used to generate retirement income; (2) Are likely at least partially taxable; (3) Have restrictions (like age) on accessibility; (4) Involve irrevocable settlement elections; (5) Offer similar payout & survivorship options; (6) ...
One Good Annuity? Single-Premium-Immediate-Annuity (SPIA) Agreement
Просмотров 3,1 тыс.3 года назад
At first glance, there is a huge amount of disagreement over whether annuities are "bad" or "good." The basic battle lines appear to be drawn between the investment sector (think, for example, Ken Fisher), on the one hand, and the life-insurance industry (e.g., Tom Hegna), on the other. I began this project with the intention of doing a "pro"-and-"con" video, like several others I've recorded r...

What is a "death benefit"/"death proceed"? What is "premium"? What is "underwriting"? (And so on) Additionally, I give simple descriptions of the most common li...

Pension Lump Sum Pros & Cons: Take Commuted Value Or Installments?

For those fortunate enough to have a pension, one of the trickiest election-option questions is whether to take the pension as a lump sum, or to opt for installment payments instead. The so-called "lump-sum" option also known as the "commuted value" or the "net-present value" of the pension is an option that involves the employer or pension company paying the retiree a (usually large) one-time ...
Is Tom Hegna's 'Don't Worry, Retire Happy' Program a SCAM? Review

I'm still fighting with the IRS about my 2020 Qualified Disaster Loss (Hurricane Sally damages) and my 2020 RMD. As always it takes months to get a simple reply back from the IRS. In regards to the RMD that was taken prior to the wavier being declared, , IRS Notice 2020-51 instructs on the wavier and "Permitted repayments of RMDs previously distributed from an IRA. It instructs to rollover the amount back into the IRA before Aug 31,2020 which I did. At the end of 2020 I decided to take a distribution from my IRA to cover damages from the hurricane rather than take a SBA loan. The first distribution (RMD) plus the 2nd distribution was entered on the 1099-R for 2020. The question is how should the RMD rollover be deducted from my gross income?

I'm surprised there isn't an insurance product that has payment exclusions for specific causes of death. For example: there are many cancer patients in remission but have an expected recurrence within a certain range of years, with successful treatments available after that. But always with the possibility that the cancer returns aggressively. They should be able to get coverage for any cause of death *other* than their cancer (auto accident, workplace mishap, etc). That way they can protect their families, and the insurance companies avoid that one risk factor.

Best decision is to not trap yourself in a cash value life insurance policy to begin with. Better to buy a term policy if you need life insurance and to put money into an investment if you want your money to grow. A whole life policy does a terrible job of providing both and over 50% end up surrendering their policies.

With a fraternal insurance company, should I be concerned that my guaranteed payouts could be altered if there are changes in bylaws/other after my policy is in effect? What are some of the things that I should be concerned with or should I ensure my policy reads when going with a fraternal insurance company for a whole life product?

This video is full of misinformation. As a funeral director and preplanning counselor my best advice is to know exactly what you are paying for and understand what you are signing. My biggest hang up on life insurance is that if you should have to use state paid medicaid to pay for home care or nursing home care then the state (Texas anyway) will make you cash that policy out if it has a large cash value.

Life insurance don’t pay for shit! They try to get out of it. It takes months maybe years and they never pay the amount they said! Most of the times people sue insurance because they never want to pay. They always avoid you they take months or years and a dead body can’t take months or years to be taken care of. I would not get life insurance!

Thank you for explaining the employer sponsored retirement account. Could you explain making conversions while working at the employer. For example, I elected to convert my employer sponsored 401k to a employer sponsored 401k Roth in 08/01/22. But then I realized this would affected my tax rate so I converted back to the employer sponsored 401k in 12/20/22. Since this happened in the same year, and I decided converted, will this create a taxable event that would affect my tax rate? 😢. It feels like it should all be corrected in-house...

You are a very good and clear speaker. This video was easy to follow. However, it seems to me that you stopped one step short. If you can't directly compare the 6% payout rate and the 1% CD rate, what rate should you use instead of the payout? There is some annuity rate of return, that will be less that the payout rate - that accounts for the fact that you are giving up (selling as you say) your premium. How is that calculated and is it appropriate to compare to the 1% CD rate?

Stay away from it unless you want your life to be miserable. They destroy everything they go near. So unless you want a shitty life stay away from Bitcoin. It is organized crime in the face of the Law.

Thank you for this information. I refuse to but life insurance because I have eternal life and I don't believe in death. Also my dad was a banker that would not teach me anything about money and building wealth. He is an alcoholic narcissist that tried to keep me and other people dependent on him. I hate him and I disowned him because he's with the mafia, he abuses people and he does bad business. He faked his death, by the way. Others who did the same thing "miraculously" came back to life. Nope, you said you died so now you're dead to me, all of you.

This was a very interesting well-researched vide, so thank you. I will say one thing: everyone, and I mean everyone, from Hegna on down has an interest in what they present and represent. This is simply the nature of the financial advisement and management industry. Everyone wants a piece of your money one way or the other whether small or big, directly or indirectly, presently or in the future, the incentive is always some kind of financial reward. The way I look at it is "that's okay" as long as what you're getting in return is valuable to you, and admittedly sometimes "value" is hard to quantify. So it's all good. Which is more than I can say about the ultimate money grubber from which we get very little back... the IRS!

What a bunch of crap. You failed to mention that you are giving up your principal to generate a cash flow. I can take the same cash and generate similar income from dividend payments alone. When I die I still have my principal plus capital appreciation. You conveniently failed to mention that fact. I learned a long time ago you don't get rich listening to slick salespeople.
