I raise the vehicle, spin each wheel and listen with a stethoscope or tube to my ear to find bad bearings. Hasn't let me down yet.. Love your videos Scotty!
True story. I bought a 1992 Cadillac Seville 2500km from my home. Never herd it running and never had it checked out. Took the people at their word that it was road worthy. I got a flight to pick up the car and drove it home from Ontario to Nova Scotia in the middle of a snow storm. The old Caddy worked like a top and still does. This was 4 years ago.
@@toriless You could say that. Luck must run deep with me than. I pulled off a similar stunt with a 1993 F150 two years later. I still drive both as everyday drivers. Of course the Caddy doesn't see the roads in the winter. But the old Ford Truck is good and able or it.
7:40, air conditioning. At work the management decided to disconnect the air conditioning in all of the service trucks out on the line because they didn't want anyone sitting in air conditioning when they should be working. But, you know, you go along and do what you are told. SO, along comes the RAINY SEASON and none of the trucks can move because the defrost would no longer clear the windshields and the mechanics could NOT see out of the trucks to drive safely. SO, the air-conditioning got hooked back up in all the truck fleet. Tremendous, unnecessary expense so some jughead could have his way. This is a TRUE STORY.

I live in the US in the NE part of the country. I've been seeing snow since I was a kid. Now that I'm older I'm sick of the crap. I wish I could send all you want to you. LOL

@The Real VR Schools are closed here in the states, well at least mine anyhow, It's Martin Luther Luther King day. So all the government places are closed too on top of the bad weather.
My daughter and her family lived in Berlin until this fall. Before the pandemic we visited two christmases in a row. I was surprised the temperatures were not that much lower than winter temperatures here in southeastern North Carolina. Amazing how the North Atlantic can temper winters that far north. It just seemed to be constantly wet there. Either rain or damp air and condensation on the streets.
I have a 95 Cherokee like that one, except it's 4x4. Got it new and it's currently at 436,000 miles. Engine, Transmission, Transfer Case are untouched other than maintenance and all is well. Even the Suspension and Steering is original. Many Brake changes & Shocks over the years, but nothing serious.
Imagine a good quality Jeep now, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha... that is hilarious... I would never own a Jeep of any kind. That's why i listened to Scotty and bought a 1994 Celica in November 2019 for $600.00 - BEST money i EVER spent on a used car.
Jeep owner here (same model). ALWAYS replace your axle bearings in pairs. You've got the thing up on jacks, anyway. And the other side *will* eventually go out
I drive so little that I just looked at my tires and they were made in 2008! LOL I think I might be buying some new tires very soon. They still have a lot of tread on them, but I am seeing the start of a few little cracks which is not a good sign. Good grief. I wonder about myself sometimes. Don't get old - everything starts to break down and I mean everything!
Ignoring the fact that mechanically-aware drivers drive will choose to go more slowly during sharper turns, thus avoiding a difference between the lateral forces for left and right turns, there's something else to think about. I'm not sure about this particular axle, but most modern, light-duty, live rear axles use wheel bearings that don't carry lateral forces. In such axles, the side-loading of cornering is transferred via the axle shaft to the tapered roller bearings of the differential carrier, and those bearings are extremely well suited for side loading so they wouldn't normally fail due to cornering forces (and the wheel bearings certainly won't fail for that reason since they don't carry side loads at all). For rear driving axles which don't have that kind of wheel bearing, the wheel bearing is a tapered roller bearing, so again, side loading is not an issue (the explanation for how side loads are transferred to from one side of the car to the other for the different bearing styles (except on heavy-duty axles in which the wheel bearings are paired) gets a little complicated to explain, but that's less important than noting that tapered roller bearings are great for side loading). It's those modern compact, all-in-one hub bearings (which usually have ball bearings running in a groove), that are NOT well suited for the stresses of cornering.
The Jeep XJ is the greatest mid size SUV ever made, easy to work on for the average person and if you maintain them properly they will run forever. My 2000 Cherokee Sport 4x4 had over 300k when I sold it and never had any major work done on it. I can say it was the only used vehicle I ever owned that NEVER left me stranded. The 4.0 inline 6 engine is bullet proof and if maintained will run for a very long time.
@@mcc7762 Actually, it's too bad that the vast majority of American drivers can't appreciate a simple and practical vehicle like this, and it is easy to convince them to buy expensive modern junk. Other American car brands stopped making simple, practical, and capable 4x4s for the same reasons that Chrysler did. There are still people like us who would buy a vehicle like this, but not enough to make it worth it to the manufacturer. Sad days.
I just wanted to thank Scotty for taking the time to answer questions about all this stuff. And the videos are always fill will useful information to help us maintain and keep our expensive automobiles up and running well.
Very insightful. I had this issue with my old 78 Delta 88. New rear seals, new bearings, new differential grease, and that car went beyond 400,000 mi. before I gave it away, still working. And the noise from the back end of the car disappeared for the remainder of ownership.

No, you're wrong. The outer bearings on a chrysler 8.25 are flooded by the differential gear lube. They fail because they run low on gear lube. The seals at the end of the axle tube keep the fluid in and dirt out and keep gear lube off the brake shoes.

Have you seen Vice Grip Garage on RUclips? He buys old cars that are 30 years old and have not been started in years. He gets them started and fixes brakes and wheel bearins and points and rebuilds carb. for minimal cost and drives them home.
If you can't tow or ship a vehicle (too expensive) at least have someone else come with you with another vehicle to follow you back in case you have problems. That might be a slightly cheaper option than towing or shipping (unless you have a car hauler trailer or can rent/buy one). When I've bought used cars, I've always had someone come with me (give me a ride) and then we drove back home together in case something went wrong, but never had an issue. But having someone give you a ride to the place where you're picking up the car and following you back is cheap and easy.
You can also jack the car up and test the wheel bearing and other bushing wear. Simply wigle the wheel and if there is movement then there are something wrong with wheel bearing or bushes.
Yup.. I bought my Mercedes e350 2016 shipped it to my dads from Houston.. wanted to check it out before driving it back to austin and also didn’t want my truck in austin too so left the truck at my dads.. needless to say 400 to ship was worth it.. it gave me time to check the car more thoroughly which it’s in really great shape :)
Are you going soft in the head? Those axle bearings are lubricated by the same gear lube that’s in the differential. The seal is there to keep the gear oil in the axle housing and off the brakes! Not sure what crockpot thinks those bearings use grease and not the same gear oil that’s in the differential, it’s pretty obvious how it all works. Also it’s obvious the diff cap is the stock stamped steel cap that someone spray painted, it’s definitely not aluminum.
Scotty kilmer, help me! Just bought a Toyota on June 2021 with 9 miles on and 17,000 later, front tires are gone bald. All services been done by the dealership. I still can’t figure it out as too why… I been 7 month with the car and stealership dont want to hear about it, what should i do? They say there’s nothing they can do. Who can i talk to. And Just today my battery is bad had to get jumpstart twice. Should there be dealer warranty, i had the car for 7 months. Regardless of outcome u best Scotty!!! Generationally knowledge for years to come.
Hmmmm . . . I thought the rear bearings on a that Jeep would have been lubricated by the grease from the differential -- at least that's the way it is on my old Dodge Dakotas. So the moment I saw that someone had replaced the differential cover, I figured they ran it out of gear lube somehow. That's because the only time I ever had to replace the wheel bearings was when my light duty diff went out and I replaced it with a heavier unit. (Insert joke about Chrysler quality here.) The replacement unit had a pile of miles and I eventually had to replace the bearings. (See Scotty's video about mileage claims on used auto parts.)
PS: I've owned seven of the 90s and 2Ks Dakotas, that was the only diff I ever had an issue with . . . come to think of it however, it was the only one with the light duty diff. They were made a lot better back then. These days, I would never buy a Fiat Chrysler vehicle.

We just bought a 1995 Chevy Beauville van and had the transmission rebuilt. Anything else we should look into to keep it running? It has 225K miles on it. It is such a cool van. We also bought a 2010 Ford Expedition XL w/ 209k miles on it and a 2010 VW CC (I had a new timing chain installed because it has 124K miles on it.) We love all three of these vehicles which we use and need for different reasons.
That 8.25 axle only has outside bearing seals and uses gear oil to lube the bearings themselves. That's how most all semi floating light duty axles are that are made in the US light truck market. This isn't an import there Scotty!
We've bought a few used cars that had to be driven a few hours back home. Never had a problem but it is scary when it's the new devil you don't know and you're 200 miles from home.
Its truly funny how folks believe that removing the thermostat from an engine helps with anything, except for a temporary fix for a stuck and closed one. If an engine is running hot and the thermostat works, its something else. Removing a thermostat to solve the problem is simply a false repair and will cause secondary issues just like this guy experienced.
We call that "more money than sense". The minute you drive a new car off the lot, it's used. I hope you donate to Charity if you have that much disposable income.

I have no intentions of driving it in the snow and salt..I have a 92 Camry for that...😆 Are there anything I should watch for? It's parked in an unheated garage and so far none of the interior parts have cracked or split...thank you
These guys never take a break;

It’s even colder than Houston was🥶last Feb!
Now it helped you grew up around Buffalo,NY
I owned the exact Jeep! Put 400K on it. Rear Axle was the only major repair I ever had.
Yeah the 4.0 l inline 6 was a great jeep. New ones not so much lol
Good information about the defrost setting 👍
The Jeep Renegade is assembled in Melfi Italy along side the Fiat 500X
We just bought a 1995 Chevy Beauville van and had the transmission rebuilt. Anything else we should look into to keep it running? It has 225K miles on it. It is such a cool van.
We also bought a 2010 Ford Expedition XL w/ 209k miles on it and a 2010 VW CC (I had a new timing chain installed because it has 124K miles on it.) We love all three of these vehicles which we use and need for different reasons.
Never seen a Chevy beauville van
The Volkswagen CC is the noisiest car I have ever ridden in... the usual excuses cupped tires
You are an inspiration to many. Plz keep making videos.
Scotty never fails, informative & entertaining.
Interesting to learn the A/C comes on with the defrost. Thumb up.
You're one of the good ones Scotty !!!!! 💪👍🙏.. God bless you brother.
Here in northern Michigan, they sometimes use Jeep Wranglers to deliver mail lol.
Those Jeep Cherokee XJ's are one of the best 4x4's out there. This one can easily be changed into a 4x4
Unibody on dana 35s is the best? I6 gets about 14 mpg Hwy/10-12 offroad. I'll take my Sidekick.
What does old Scotty prefer Texas Heat or Tennessee cold
The 4 L Jeep Cherokee from the early 90s was awesome
Thankfully in Chicago they put 2” of salt for every 1” of snow, so I don’t need chains for my tires
We never get mail when there is more than a couple inches of snow on the ground.
We get mail with 2 feet of snow 😂
Great information as always
This exact thing happened to my 2001 Lincoln Town Car.
" It came with really crappy headphones " a pair of beats pops up haha so true the sound is really awful on those 😂
That 8.25 axle only has outside bearing seals and uses gear oil to lube the bearings themselves. That's how most all semi floating light duty axles are that are made in the US light truck market. This isn't an import there Scotty!
Post was new to the impressive gestures of Scotty!
hardest working man on youtube!!
We've bought a few used cars that had to be driven a few hours back home. Never had a problem but it is scary when it's the new devil you don't know and you're 200 miles from home.
9 degrees that's too cold for me
Loving that hat Mr. Postman! LGC baby!!
Great tip. I refuse to buy any vehicle that's used. With the way people drive they really mistreat vehicles.
We call that "more money than sense". The minute you drive a new car off the lot, it's used. I hope you donate to Charity if you have that much disposable income.
@@thefix2573 my car is worth more now used than it was new. So eat my stool! All I'm saying is people mistreat vehicles these days and I don't want some else's pile of sh*t
Thank you for the video. Blessings to you.
Maybe a war surplus old Willys would be a good Jeep, albeit a gas guzzler.
kindly make a video about the points to grease in a car.....that is rare to find......
My XJ is a tank!!
Love you scotty ❤ Cheers from Hamilton Canada 🇨🇦
Scotty, I still drive my Jeep Classic.
On some newer Nissans the AC it's always on and it doesn't give you the option of turning it off the the heater is on
Yes it's BAD not having a working coolant thermostat, Because the engine won't be able to get to a Normal operating Temperature like that.
Everything can be figured out if you have the right equipement and a brain in your head ♥️
Your the man..Scotty..From 🇨🇦
Wow Ohh My Gosh. Scotty you are amazing. I'm Impressed. And thank you for some heads up advise.
I had a 1988 Jeep Wagoneer I should never have got rid of it damn thank you for the video Scotty
I had the same (Opel) car in H.S. I knew there was a reason I like you. It fogged up too! 😉

Hey Scotty been a long time viewer found you my self.i know you get a lot of questions and might now ever get a answer but I still love you....I got a 2010 Chevrolet mailbu the to front wheels sound to sensitive on small bumps drive great steers good very little slack...to me it sounds like the control arms a little loose or needs grease for being a older car I'm hoping it's just that drives great just thinking because it a older car with 117000 miles and it's fine
I saw that jeep for sale in Quebec
