i find it interesting that early on, he had this fake persona, fake organization, fake people he communicated with, etc. and by the end, all of that becomes a reality for him. he's fighting horrible organizations, communicating serious conversations between his allies. it's a perfect parallel, almost as if his Hououin Kyouma persona was predicting the future. fitting for Okabe, Father of Time.

I thought this was going to be a wholesome anime. I was connected to most of the cast and felt like I was friends with them and an actual lab member. Once episode 12 hit, I was heartbroken. Seeing the true okabe made me really sad. When Kurisu didn’t get to finish saying she loves him before he went back made me depressed even more.

Hououin Kyouma is the main reason I was able to get through the first 9 or so episodes of Steins;Gate on my first viewing of the show. I immediately connected to Okabe as a character and his appearance as mad scientist Hououin Kyouma. I loved his mannerisms, nicknames for others, his eternal fight against the organization, and his concern for others.

When I first watched steins; gate, I thought that this Hououin Kyouma thing was really cringy, weird, and foolish. However, as the plot unpeels itself deeper and deeper, I couldn't help but to wish that Hououin Kyouma could be back, his crazy laughter, his tone, his style, and his poses. Okabe's sorrow and hopelessness just made me feel...sad, how watching someone so dear to you dying and dying again, having no power to save them..how it cracked Hououin Kyouma. When Hououin Kyouma was back, I just felt a spark of joy deep inside of me. I am really glad that I found Steins;gate.

when i saw the link to this video on reddit i thought like "i like steins gate and i have nothing to do, i think i will see it right ?." there came the prejudice that a small channel and because it is an "old" video I’m just going to waste time ... so I started watching it, the first minutes of the material presented were surprisingly satisfying, and as I continued to watch the video those involuntary tears started to come out, which made me realize why I liked anime so much, as if it were "something hidden in my subconscious" even in that year that was so forgetful in my past. but what surprised me the most (to the point that I was writing this text) was that your words brought me to a reflection on myself that for almost a year it was taking me hours to think, made me see how much I changed and how it was a distance from me of my "houoiun kyouma '', from my current state, and where I want to go from. my sincere congratulations on the video ... and I hope you continue to do amazing work like this.

Steins gate for me is perfect, many people say that the first part is not good, but it is thanks to it that the second half of steins gate is so impactful. And Okabe is one of the best characters I've ever seen, a person who doesn't know how to interact very well with others, who doesn't know what to say at certain times and for this reason he ends up hiding in his narcissistic personality, following his story suffering so much for not being able to save the most important people in his life was something really sad, and then seeing him succumb to fate in Steins gate 0 was devastating, but in the end it was beautiful to see him smile again, and defeat fate

@@LeoVoid There are parts I don't get, I wasn't the average steins gate watcher I guess. I LOVED okabe from the very first episode. He loved Dr pepper, he had a CRT TV, (I love retro shit) he was energetic, I could tell he was putting on an act as well. I understood everything that was going on pretty much and the first episode immediately hooked me. This really helped me understand how a lot of other people saw the series. I did not understand how people did not like okabe at first. I'm glad I heard that you were not getting anything that was going on or whatever in the beginning. I tried to show my parents steins;gate and I purposefully showed my parents a different anime first to get them used to Japanese names a little bit. They did not get steins;gate at all and did not want to watch even the 2nd episode xD. So I'm glad even an anime watcher like yourself did not know what was going on either, saying that the narrative was all over the place. This very video was actually the reason I watched steins;gate 0. I clicked on it excited for an analysis then you hit me with the spoiler warning for steins gate 0, that day I set aside a weekend to binge watch the entire series. I did, and I am glad I did. When hououin kyouma did that laugh and came back.. omg did I go NUTS! That's probably the happiest I have been watching anything, or probably anything to do with media/technology, besides probably a speedrun I did after a years work of effort lol. It was so painful seeing okabe suffer. As soon as I finished steins;gate 0, I came to this video and I thought I was going to be disappointed because of how much I hyped myself up for it, but you didn't disappoint. I wish I could watch your other content but I haven't watched any of the other anime's you have talked about. I might watch them if I ever get into anime again. But, yes I really do. Initially it was bookmarked on my firefox because I wanted to watch it after steins;gate 0 and it has remained there just because I like to rewatch it every couple months. Reminds me of how much the series impacted my life. It's pretty good. I've tried to do an analysis video on something before and something always stops me or I don't know how to describe how I felt. Seeing something like this just truly amazes me how you were able to put it into words.

Im a lonely guy with a deep love for anime that stems from coming through a dark part of my life that took up all of my childhood years into adulthood, only to realize that I lacked any sort of real identity and I knew nothing about myself. My memories are all really hazy… sometimes I feel like I didn’t actually live those years. But I remembered watching my first anime with my cousin when I was young, and even if the fog of dark times I always came back to watching anime and finding joy in it. 15 years later, and I’m on the other side struggling to find myself with nothing to latch onto to keep myself grounded in who I am and avoid regressing to the man I was before. And I start watching anime again, it’s not much but it gave me a way to feel things again and something to look forward to on a weekly basis. I watched steins;gate again and came to the exact same conclusions you did and it changed my perspective so much. Then playing through the VN solidified those conclusions and illuminated more parts of the Okabe that get left out in the anime. Anyways… the point I wanna make is that I have no one I can talk about this kind of stuff with… and it makes me feel so heart wrenchingly alone sometimes. Seeing this video made me feel like there were some people out there who could understand me and it gave me some hope. I thoroughly enjoyed it, other than the horribly timed ad right around the climax of the video. I wish I had a friend like you to discuss this kind of stuff with. I hope I find more content like this.❤

It's crazy because I read the visual novel first and I honestly almost dropped it because I thought he was so obnoxious at the beginning. @@attacktitan9222 I honestly believe the underlying narrative of Re:Zero is a giant commentary on depression, I know people tend to discuss loneliness when analyzing Subarus character, but I personally think that the story touches up on alot of the subject matter of depression and how it affects us.
Just look at Betelguese, Subaru, Emilia, Garfield, Rem, Satella.
All of them have a mental issue of some kind that stems from an affliction from their past.

I was very familiar to "chunibyou" and has characters with it that I like before I watched this series. This made me enjoy Okabe's delusions and made me wonder how it will all go with a serious looking setting. The drab colors and the oppressive summer heat you can almost feel along the noisy crickets was a contrast to the grand and cheery Houoin Kyoma.

I agree with the people in the comments. Why doesn't this video have more views? Steins;Gate fans sometimes you disappoint me seeing as S;G is one of the most popular anime of all time. Videos that talk about it should have a lot more views but for some reason they don't. One critic I would like to give is about the background music. I got back to watching this right after I saw this video, and its just amazing seeing all the little details and foreshadowing. You know... after watching this video, I realized that I started helping people around me (not even fully understanding of what they are). That is, thanks to this video, I drew a parallel between specific situations, when I saw that a person was sad, I immediately turned on my "Kyouma" (which is not so different from what we see in the show) and this miraculously helped all those people who around me. Now I understand what that "power" you were talking about.
It's embarrassing to admit... but it seems to me that it was Okabe Rintaro and Hououin Kyouma who filled the void of my soul that used to bring me suffering, despair and constant self-doubt. Apparently, that's why I often behave exactly like the main character. All these awkward moments, cringe, misunderstandings... it all seemed to have a higher purpose from the very beginning.
And people are right, my friend. Your video deserves so much more. But remember that whatever your result was - just keep moving forward. We are the blacksmiths of our destiny.
Thank you for giving me full understanding of what I am and what I was doing this whole time(after I watched/played S;G/S;G0). I thought I had lost the personality traits that Okabe had. It turned out that they were always with me and became a part of me.

Steins; Gate is my favorite Anime of all time (2nd is Fate/Zero with Kiritsugu's character for similar reasons), because Okabe is a fantastic protagonist. The Anime and 0 really build up his persona well, only for it to be shattered with Mayuri's death cycle. I've seen some comments (not here but in general) about how Steins; Gate's characters are lacking, due to the fact that they have little to no development (despite the fact I'd argue that isn't true). What people don't realize is that that's exactly the point; the idea that Okabe is the only one who remembers anything means he is the only one who CAN have character development (and what a character arc it is) and that's the genius of it all.
Here's a fun fact: J Michael Tatum, Okabe's VA in the English dub, actually had a breakdown on set (specifically during the scene where Mayrui gets run over). His performance cemented this dub as one of the greatest dubs of all time to me (up there with Fate/Zero and Highschool DxD).
I don't know if you've watched Fate/Zero before, but I highly recommend it. The entire Anime is all about different philosophies.

There are a few additional things I'd like to bring up, specifically on the concept of Hououin Kyouma.
In Steins;Gate 0, it isn't just the idea of Hououin Kyouma returning being something that everyone agrees with; that you feel what the Lab mems feel when he returns, but it's the fact that his existence takes a whole different meaning entirely. Kyouma is no longer just some Chuunibyou persona used as a façade for his genuine fear and hesitation, but as an avatar of his newfound determination and headstrong leadership that he legitimately lacked in Steins;Gate. Before, he wasn't even convinced there was a possibility that Steins Gate existed, but now he's determined to reach it. It's the reason why he doesn't say at the end of Arc-light at the Point of Infinity "this is the choice of Steins Gate" but instead "that is *my* choice!" which surpasses even the original Okabe, where not only does he believe in Steins Gate, but in Determinism in complete purity.
I'd probably also say something about Kurisu, considering that the expanded canon (manga adaptations, Drama CDs, and Load Region of Deja Vu) but I'm honestly fucked to think of something. If anything, it'd probably have to bring up the fact that Kurisu is really a soulmate of Okabe, as she's probably the most likely candidate to develop a full Reading Steiner (as the manga ver. of Babel of the Grieved Maze has her actively see her death in Beta) and the fact that in Load Region, she too had to abandon Okabe for 25 years (more than Okabe) to develop the Time Machine that Suzuha would use to help the Kurisu in the past rescue Okabe. That Kurisu's willingness to put up with Hououin Kyouma is what causes her to develop a genuine appreciation and (dare I say) love for Okabe, to the point where she values his life and sanity above her own, and that she would rather suffer alone than to have never met him in the first place.
"Human beings are time haunted. That's what Hiedegger thought, right?" - Okabe Rintarou

    • @LeoVoid
      @LeoVoid  4 года назад +3

Yeah I agree completely, that's what I was going for at the end of my video hence the "That is MY choice" instead of saying it's the choice of Steins Gate, I kinda left that part ambiguous :p
I also need to get into all those side stories, I read the manga where the events of the original Steins Gate are told from Kurisus perspective, and I've been DYING for more of that, especially after the movie where Kurisu saves Kyoumma.

I still remember to this day how i came and stumbled upon this franchise. I had $40 on my playstation account and no games to buy. Back then i had a playstation vita. I saw Steins Gate and i bit. I have not gone back sinxe and played all of its games, watched all of the anime and read the manga. It is truly a masterpiece and happy ro call it my #1 anime of all time.

Thank you, I'm glad I'm able to engage you with my videos
Honestly when I started creating these videos I was always conflicted with whether or not I should add some flair to the commentary (I've done voice work for 10 years, I am somewhat capable :p)
But I found myself enjoying videos from the likes of Aleczandxr and Lohart that really cemented what I wanted my pacing and tone to take with my videos.
The challenge I face now is if I ever choose to give out my opinions on video games, I think itd be hard to Incorporate the same thing because of the medium.
I will try my best to incorporate the same feeling into my next videos, I hope to keep you engaged in future videos ^^

    Wonderful rundown!
I first saw Stein's Gate by watching a 'let's play' of the VN. I don't think I'd have made it past the first couple of episodes without the player's commentary being so entertaining (NicoB), most other entertainment options were denied me at the time and the fact that I was more listening to it than watching while I did other stuff. There came a point where it grew on me a little bit so I listened to some more in the background, then THAT event happened and from that moment forward I was fully paying attention.
I've seen the anime since and it's a great adaptation. I got a cat and she's called Hououin because I loved him so much - I thought he was a cringy idiot at first too. So, so glad I didn't stop watching/listening when it just seemed full of stupid fluff and nonsense. I had no idea what I was getting into.

Great video, man. Steins;Gate's ability to constantly foreshadow and sprinkle hints of what's to come throughout the first 11 episodes is second to none. While the story doesn't have a wide list of characters, the few they do have are each developed so beautifully, not rushed or mishandled. Watching the narrative in chronological order makes Okabe return to Hououin Kyouma in Steins;Gate 0 feels so much more cathartic.

I will insert here a comment from one user that I liked very much:
"Despite Okabe calling himself a Mad scientist who will bring the status Quo to it's knees, in reality, he is nothing more than just a simple person who cares deeply about those who he holds dear. That's what i think is what made Okabe a very likable character, because beneath that goofy loud dellusional exterior he shows, he's just like all of us, a person who struggles, a man who is desperate to protect everyone he loves. And at Steins;Gate 0 he is a man who has lost everything. Though in the end he still regains his strength."
