    If you ask me this kind of video is what I think so many average people need to see. I’d love to see this idea be a reoccurring video. Real work rooms real world situations and how did you make “the best” experience you can when we don’t have perfect options. Please make more stuff like this.
    Necessity is the mother of invention.

      Thx and agreed. Tilting the front LCR's down really helped and dual subs was a must in this room to really get seamless integration and good bass to all seats.

      I always try to only leave positive comments, and I really like audioholics, but the videos need to be edited better or scripted ahead of time, they need to be shorter and more concise, but still have the same information. The chatting between hugo and gene seems so forced, like the chemistry is off. I'm sure they get along great in real life, but it doesn't show in the videos. Hugo always sounds like he was caught on the spot when it's his turn to talk and he doesn't know what to say, which is why i think maybe writing it out ahead of time might help with that awkwardness. Marshall Guthrie's videos seem like they are better planned out ahead of time and are much clearer. I hope this doesn't come off as rude and I hope it's good feedback. Thanks!

    I have been watching your channel for about five months now and I want you to know that I appreciate your advise. This latest video confirmed many things I have experienced over the years about a/v. I have been enjoying home theater and audio for over 30 years but you are helping me realize there is so much more to learn. I have been 'tweaking' my system based on what you advise and find that I am getting better sound. And my equipment is fifteen years old. I am upgrading my a/v receiver in 2016 and looking forward to it. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    I like how in North America they always casucally speak of cutting holes in walls, ceiling, and even floors. - But where I live, in Europe, we have everything solid. - Yea, we can cut out big chunks of stone or concrete, but that's not really... viable... You can't route the wires inside the walls or anything. XD - All there is with these pre-built houses is the wiring for the electricity, and if you want a custom house, well, that costs as much as you would think.

    Thanks to valuable advice from Gene and Hugo on speaker placement, it has contributed greatly to making the most of my odd living room size and speaker placement. I wish there was a way to post a photo of my unusual rear speaker setup to save writing about it, but here it goes: My living room has slanted vaulted ceilings, 18 feet high to the left of the listening area and 9 feet to the right. Behind the listening area there is a staircase. Not ideal at all for home theater audio speaker placement or acoustics. After giving it a lot of thought, I bought two hollow eight-foot wooden column from Lowes. One column for the left presence speaker and left rear speaker and one column for right presence speaker and right rear speaker. The columns are located five feet behind the main listening area, are about seven feet apart, and are secured with perforated metal hanger straps to the steel bar railings of the stairway. I first placed the columns on the ground for ease of running the speaker wire up the columns. I drilled a hole in each column about five feet up from the column base for wiring to connect to the rear speakers. Then I drilled a thick screw a few inches above that hole to hang the rear speakers from the column. For extra support, I also screwed a four inch, L-shaped steel countertop support bracket into the column to give bottom support to the speakers. The wiring for the presence speakers comes out through the top of the column. I screwed a three foot long, L-shaped steel metal bar (the type with holes in it) that I also got at Lowes' hardware department. The bar sticks out three feet away from the column. At the end of the bar I attached the presence speakers. This is the rear portion of my 5.4.4. speaker setup. The AV receiver is on the opposite end of the room. I have a large rug in the middle of the room that hides all the speaker wires from the AV receiver to the couch and a rug from under the couch to the base of the columns. I also attached a seven foot L-shaped metal bar from the top of one column to the other column as extra support to prevent swaying should anyone accidentally bump into the columns. I would have preferred to have speakers to the left and right of the listening area but, unfortunately, there is a large window to the right of the listening area and a hall and dining room entrance to the left. I hope this information will be helpful to others who may have odd shaped rooms for theater sound speaker placement. As for the sound from my rear speaker setup, movie watching is now an enveloping experience!

    Great practical video guys! I have a similar situation with my FL, FR, SW inside a built-in bookcase. I made up fiberglass panels wrapped in acoustically transparent cloth the same color as the shelving and lined the interior of the shelves with them around the speakers. They blend right in and don't notice them unless I point them out. I think I'll get some of those Auralex isolators for them too.

    A curse of being a purest, we have to compromise :-) Excellent video, We have to work with what we are given, and the biggest given is the WAR (Wife Approval Rating) mess that up and you have WAR :-) With a little ingenuity you can even disguise some speakers ad furniture. Hugo -- if you were to start to lift while hanging from the ceiling, you may just catch up the Gene in height :-)
    In my small room, I had to limit my surround and rear speakers to Tang Bang 3" full range in small enclosures with a cut offs of 15K to 200 hrz. Not ideal, but it was that or no surround speakers.

    I have a 20 X 18 living room with three walls, 10-foot ceilings, and the back is open to the kitchen and breakfast area. I've got towers for the L & R front(JBL S312's) and the center channel(Aperion Intimus 5C) is above my TV in an entertainment center and angled downward toward the main listening position. I am running dual SVS subs up front in each corner. My surrounds are bookshelf speakers(JBL N24's) mounted to ceiling, since I have no back wall. They are slightly behind the main listening postion and angled slightly down but not directly at the main seats. I think it works quite well.

    When designing systems for clients in small apartments/condos, I often lean towards the Def Tech Super Towers. Those have subs built in to the towers, so they take up less room than standalone subs. Obviously not as powerful as a standalone sub, but they come close for a nice price.

    First of all I want to thank you guys for the outstanding RUclips videos and information that comes with it.
    I’m looking for a little guidance in the selection of in ceiling rear surround speakers. I have two Klipsch RP-160M bookshelf speakers for my front, a RP-440C for my center, two R-112SW subwoofers and four Yamaha NSIC800WH for my Atmos. Due to the open space of my home and the height of my seating, I had to use a pair of my old Bose AM5 speakers for my surround. My Receiver is a Yamaha RX-A3080.
    I am between a pair of Polk RC-80i, Klipsch CDT-5800 ll or another pair of the Yamaha I’m already using, for my rear surround. The Polk speakers cost a lot cheaper than the Klipsch, but they are rated top among the best ceiling speakers. Being that the Klipsch seems to be at a high end, I don’t know if they would be better for my system.
    I appreciate any advice you can give me.
    Thanks!

    I am seeing this video in 2020 and I came here through my search for some ideas to put a home theater system in a 10 x 10 room (rectangular with 9 ft ceiling). So, I was confused, how to proceed. This video gave me 2 important things. 1. its about how place the speakers than the room size. 2. Prepare a 7.1 than focusing on atmos/dts-x, as the number of titles with Atmos/DTS-X is very less compared to the 5.1/7.1 channel audios. Very informative. I felt, 2 information, I couldn't get here. 1. if I am using monopole/directional speaker for side surround with 2 - 3 ft about ear level, can place it using a adjustable wall bracket and face it downwards towards me? 2. I can use Elevation speakers from Klipsch/SVS at 7 ft height, angled towards me and use it as Atmos speaker?

  • @davidraimundo7554
    @davidraimundo7554 3 года назад

    I also have a family room that is good on the front and rear and have plenty of height for atmos wall or ceiling, but sides is the issue.
    One wall is full depth with a large window yet doable and the other is only 3ft wide. Unfortunately, I couldn't line up the 2 sides due to the 3ft wall lining up with the window. I'm thinking of just getting a multi-directional speaker and tilting them downward just above the window which, is about 3ft in front of my seating area and then, that could effectively line up with the 3ft wall at about 7' off the floor. I'm just not sure if the multi-directional unit would be efficient since the front side of that unit would be firing into nothing, basically bouncing off the front wall. Maybe, I just get me a pair of standard surrounds and tilt them down and back towards the seating area? What a pickle!!!

    Thanks for the info, I have been learning a lot. You mention crossover, what exactly is that?

    • @Audioholics
      @Audioholics  8 лет назад +2

      A crossover is a filter network that blocks out certain frequencies. So a HPF - high pass filter blocks frequencies below its setting while a LPF- Low Pass Filter blocks frequencies above its setting. This is useful to protect small speakers from producing bass and subwoofers for producing only bass. Combined they produce a blended fullrange signal.

What is best try to utilize uneven ceiling surface which is 14' to the left of the sitting area to 6'8" to the right side Or is it best to utilize the wall which the TV is mounted elevated above the L&R speakers? Or should one mount them on the side walls elevated however the walls are wider to one side of the sitting area 12' to the left 4 ' to the right of the sitting area.

    Hey guys... Just moved into a new house in the process of getting my system set up and wanted to run a question by you regarding my rear surround speaker placement. My current system consist of an Integra DHC 9.9 Processor, Emotiva MPS-2 7 Channel Amp, OPPO BDP-103, Paradigm Studio 100 v5 towers and CC-690 center up front, along with a pair of Seaton Sound Submersive F2 subs, but I have decided to change all my rear surrounds due the room layout now available. I was previously running a pair of B&W DS3's for my rear side channels, and a pair of B&W 685's I had for the rears. However due to the new room layout and the "wives feedback" I have decided to get a pair of Paradigm SA-ADP in walls for the side surrounds, and a pair of Paradigm Cl Elite E80-A in ceiling speakers for the rears.My questions is..... how high would you recommend I install the in wall side surrounds at the tweeter level? Since these get installed into the wall and once you start cutting your committed, I just wanted to get your thoughts to take into consideration. My first guess would be to get the tweeter about 2 feet above seated ear height which would create somewhat of a staggered tweeter height as the room goes from the front to the rear of the room. The tweeter on the towers is somewhere around 40 inches, 2 feet above seated ear level on the side channels would put the tweeters about 64 inches, and then the in ceiling rear surrounds would be at 9 feet.A few months ago you posted video related to installing a pair of Paradigm in walls for a guest room, so I thought I would ask about this. I also like to listen to multichannel audio which is why I am thinking I shouldn't install them too high, but want to ensure I maximize the investment and get the most immersive rear sound field possible. Your feedback would be appreciated and thanks so much for all the support.

    Two questions, should the rear subwoofer be smaller than the front subwoofer? Can you use a center speaker as a Left and right speaker ?

    Iduno, it's kinda cluttered looking for my taste. I would probably opt for hanging them. It's more work, but it would look much cleaner.

    You could hand an 80-100 inch pull down screen and use a short throw projector in that room for a bigger picture.

    Just a quick question, I'm on the fence to whether add a second subwoofer to my current set up or purchase the SVS PB13-Ultra. I always heard dual subs is the way to go. The current subwoofer I am running is the Bic Acoustech PL-200. I would be looking to add another PL-200 or I was just thinking just one SVS PB13-Ultra. Especially since I believe my subwoofer is in a pretty good spot for the room. Just trying to decide add another sub or just have that one subwoofer to take it to another level. Thanks for your time!

    Hi Gene, love your channel. Trying to bring music to a large living room. I am currently using a stereo amplifier to power two Elac El110s "towers" that are about 2.6 feet tall. The room is about 25' x 35' and I have the speakers against the long wall, close to a short one (open to the dining room). I am considering getting a set of bookshelf speakers (ELAC uni-fi UB5) to oppose them. Would it be better to have speakers across the room, or just try to spread the other two speakers out left and right?

    I just bought a set of Wharfedale Diamond speakers (fronts, center, side) + sub (Wharfedale D10) and my only problem is that they are a lot bigger than I thought they would be. My room is rather wide but not very deep. Also the side and backspeakers (I might go for a 7.1 and use my Dali Lektor 6 floor speakers as well) will have to be rather close to the seating area (2 feet). Do you think I could get a decent result anyway?

    Thanks for great video guys! I have 7 Sonance Symphony in-ceilings (6.5" woofer and 1" tweeter). I have a similar media niche and no floor space for speakers. I may look into adding lower CFL speakers, then I can use the ceiling CFLs as Atmos speakers. Would that work? My niche is narrower, so not sure if I can add more than just a center speaker... For subs I only have one SVS PB12-Plus. I plan to replace it with two PB16-Ultras! They can will go to the rear wall... No place up front.

    what about for my bedroom, i plan to have my front speakers on the sides of my TV, the center below the TV the surround speakers, one on the wall by the closet door, the other on the opposite wall and the subwoofer will go behind the entertainment center, is that an ideal setup or is my idea wrong, the speakers are small

    I’m using the powered subs in my tower speakers. Does this satisfy the “use 2 subs” recommendation? Also my speaker setup screen on my aventage 1070bl doesn’t show 2 subs. During speaker cal it just shows one and makes them both rumble even tough they are both plugged independently in the sub1 and sub2 output.

    I have a question if you do not mind answering it, I am setting up a "bedroom theater" system and I am curious about speaker placement. First off my bedroom is 13 X 18, I bought a Klipsh Quintet 5 channel speaker setup and bought a pair of Klipsh R-14m small bookshelf speakers for L/R (I figured the small speakers would compliment the Quintet center). I was planning on setting up the speakers as 5.1 and use 6 & 7 surround for height above the t.v., not for ATMOS or DTS-X but more to enhance the sound up front but in the video you say you would rather start with 7.1 then move on to height. My receiver is only 7.2 so should I set it up for 7.2 and not bother with the front stage height? Thanx.

    The wall my TV is mounted to isn't very big, I have a 55" with about 4'' of space left on both sides of the TV. I'm thinking about mounting a shelf above the TV pointing down toward the couch, laying the L&R speaker on their sides with the center of course in the middle. They are all Klipsch speakers and the left, right are 5.25" and center is dual 5.25" all with horn tweeters. I'm assuming there won't be a big definition between left and right since they are kinda close together, but I don't have many options. I have a SVS pb12-nsd behind the couch in the left corner, I also have a Dayton Audio SUB-1200 i'm not really using. Would it be a bad idea to use 2 different subs in the same setup? I know the SVS is far more powerful than the Dayton, but would it help "even" out the bass? My receiver is a Sony STR-ZA810ES.

    I love how he says don't put speakers in walls. The ceiling is a wall. The front speakers are not lined up well with the screen. The beat thing is to lose that stupid in wall cabinet and get good stands.

    • @Audioholics
      @Audioholics  5 лет назад +1

      I never said don't put speakers in the wall. I said don't put your LCR's in the ceiling. The in-wall cabinet is part of the house that I don't want to smash out just to better align the speakers. I have a dedicated theater room for that. Before criticizing, you should pay closer attention.

    Can anyone recommend where to get speaker stands for bookshelf speakers to be placed at ear level?

  • @Billfish57
    @Billfish57 5 лет назад

    I disagree always installing the center down low, if you have carpet, that will eat the signal and you will struggle to hear what people are saying in movies. I went through that already, when I moved, I set up my center channel hanging from the top with tiny cable that you can't really see, and it now hangs right above the screen and it sounds so much better, clear voices that I don't struggle to hear what people are saying. No two rooms are the same, but if you have carpet, hang that center. My front main speakers have
    2 x 10" woofers so only one nice 12" sub works fine, another sub is not really needed for me. The key to getting even sounding sound is helped a lot with choosing the right speakers in the first place. Some brands pinpoint the focus of the highs and some spread out the listening area really well so sitting in the sweat spot is not needed and that's the only way to build a home theater system.

    Hi guys, great videos! Informative and enjoying good humour. I do have 7.1 set up but I would like to know your views on in-ceiling speakers for rear (surround sound) only. I'd definitely keep my Centre, Front L/R & Sub. I only have 3.4 x 3.7 to work with (apartment living room). Any thoughts?

    • @Audioholics
      @Audioholics  8 лет назад

      In-ceiling speakers can work very well for surround back channels. I found a particularly good combination using wall mounted bipoles for side channels and monopoles slightly behind and in the ceiling for the surround back channels.

    • @francisraesacramento
      @francisraesacramento 8 лет назад

      Audioholics Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately we will not have a wall to mount bipoles for side channels. Only have a wall behind the seating/living area that faces the TV entertainment unit. Do you think it will be wise to do in-celing for side channels as well?

    • @Audioholics
      @Audioholics  8 лет назад

      +Shobhit Mathur There is good clearance above and behind the gear and the front doors are vented. Not really any heat issues especially since the Emotiva amp is Class H and runs very cool. The Yamaha RX-Z7 does get warm but there is good airflow from bottom to top and out through the vented door.
