  • This is a take off of the Versa-Shelter that was taught by Dave Canterbury several years ago. I have added an important improvement to it. This is the first in a series I want to do using the 6x8 heavy duty brown and silver, 8 dollar tarp from Home Depot. Thanks for watching.
For more information on classes and class schedules, go to: waypointsurviv...
To buy the tarp go to: www.homedepot....

Great video - My buddies and I all made these long ago but we made them out of longer tarps and each of us cut them to the lengths we wanted for our personal shelters. We installed new grommets etc.. My tarp was cut to 6ft x 14ft so I could have tarp on the ground too- I used the Pythagorean theorem to get what I need - 4ft high with 4ft floor and the rest the slanted wall. It had three side full coverage. All I needed to carry was the tarp, a 50ft clothes line and 10 tent pegs. I then abandoned this and bought a two man tent which is 10 steps up and much better. But great video as people need to be prepared.

This shelter is called a "Wind Shed" the first one you showed is a "Wind shed roof" at 13:10 and the second is called "Wind shed wedge" at 13:40. been doing this shelter since the mid 70's, and it' s one of my favorite along with the "C fly". And another that I use more in the winter the "Diamond fly" because it protect you from the elements on 3 sides with one tarp.
I`m pretty old school, I use hand tied paracord and make my pegs and support on site etc. but that's a really neat way to have a very quick shelter without adding too much weight to your kit, very practical. Thanks for posting.

James, you could set up the tarp and then mark a place on the inside of the tarp for a convenient little pocket to put small stuff like a phone or whatever in; a place your hand could easily reach. THEN, before the tarp is rolled up for carrying you could drop the little peg thingies into it.

  • @larrywhalen596

This is a nice quick set up for a tarp when you need it Now (!); the only difference I employ is I use Dacron line for all of my needs, with 3/16" line for securing tarps or tents such as what was discussed here, and whenever I go camping my lines have already been cut to length to save on set-up time.
And instead of poles which are segmented to break down I use a pair of ski poles which have been modified to secure the forward section of the tarp, as well as several aluminum tent pegs to secure the tarps' base.
The fact that it can be set up in two to three minutes to protect you from inclement weather is what makes it an ideal design to use when you need quick protection from the elements.

I don't care for dealing with poles, but I own some of those Nite Ize carabiners and other doo-hickeys and I like the idea of using them and also bungee cords instead of trying to untie paracord or other cordage. For people who are not good at knot tying or not all that interested in working with ropes and lines, it just makes sense to take advantage of easier to use tools and devices. Nice way to setup quick.

What if you use the survival blanket as a ground tarp, put the wind shield pad on top of the survival blanket and rap your self up in the blanked, since the blanket has a hood it will work as a mummy bag. Unless it gets to heavy carrying both the tarp, poles, emergency blanket and the pad. Oh and that was a great idea with the carabiners

Must have been a pretty good rain shower that came through while you were filming 😂. I’d like one of the higher end tarps for the weigh and reinforced grommets but it’s not really practical no more than I get to get out there . I’ll splurge eventually. 5 by 7 or 6 by 8 won’t work for me unless I plan staying in a fetal position. Brother showed me something years ago on rolling up tarps . I can make a large tarp pretty dang small . Cool shelter options though . Going to have to look for those carabiners. Haven’t seen that type before. Thanks for content and information. Have a good evening

BBQDad463; On my lighter weight tarps, such as 3 mil. or less, I remove them to enforce the area around where the grommet was with Dacron sailcloth and then replace with new grommets over heavy duty webbing for those who don't care for grommets.

@@WayPointSurvival Yes like the one in the beginning of the video. I always thought that the double wide or garage size screen magnet on bug screens would be good to magnet together out in blackfly or mosquito country. Some thing on bug control might be good. And does rubbing mud all over your exposed body parts really work. If you haven’t done a video on that that one might be fun. Probably more fun to watch Then to demonstrate :-).

Now then I dislike ground pounding for a bed here in the CSRA there are are just too many creepy crawlers and the air force will carry you away before morning and the fire ants Oh Holy cow!!!, but a hammock is just too uncomfortable for me...
