    So I tried doing this with Berryboot on a Pi 3B initially and it didn't work because the home assistant image isn't squashfs format. I then followed the method in your video which also didn't work. Turns out the Pi Imager USB Boot deal only works for the Pi 4. So if anyone attempts this on a Pi 3b you'll need to use the bootcode.bin file on an SD card to boot to the ssd. Beyond that difference though the method worked great. Thanks for the great video!

    Thanks for this video Mark, very helpful. I did have the problem you describe with the Conbee II which I put on the end of a cable. It did however also impact the reliability of the Pi Bluetooth meaning my Flic buttons stopped working. My solution was to put the SSD on the end of the cable and move it away from the Pi. That works a treat. Just posting this as others may find it useful.

      How do you find the Flic buttons with HA? I've not yet tried them :)

    • @colinnewman2000
      @colinnewman2000 3 года назад

      @@MarkWattTech I really like the Flic buttons and they work great for me using the flicd add-on and you don't even need the Flic bridge - hooray. The only down side is that I use hass.io which seems to have very poor support for BT 5.x USB dongles (not found one that works yet) which leaves me with the Pi built in BT which does suffer a little with range. I could probably go down the line of a supervised installation on Raspian, but I really like the simplicity of a Hass.io build and it has not caused me enough grief to try an alternative yet :)

    Just want to comment and say thanks for a great video! I followed the instructions for a fresh install and got everything working with the following setup on the 64-bit OS version(hassos_rpi4-64-5.13.img):
    [ RPi4-4GB, Samsung EVO-870(500GB), StarTech 3.1 SATA-adapter (USB2-port), 4 Amp USB-C phone charger, Conbee II with 1m ext cable (USB3-port and with Zigbee Home Automation integration, not deConz)]
    What I did differently from the video was that I first of all put Raspberry OS on a SD-card and via the desktop terminal did 'sudo apt update' and 'sudo apt full-upgrade'. After that I followed the video instructions with only one issue in that I had to remove the Conbee stick for the first boot/installation to proceed to the logon screen.

    • @MarkWattTech
      @MarkWattTech  3 года назад +1

      I really like the Argon One :D
      It's also on my list of ToDo videos. Starting with an SD card is great, but its just so much more snappier with an SSD or m.2. Also less worry if there's a power cut or you have something inefficiently writing to your database all day long haha.

    • @robertgallant6422
      @robertgallant6422 3 года назад +1

      @@MarkWattTech I recently installed Home assistant in an Argon One case with a M.2 SATA drive using M. Watt's videos. It's a great setup.
      To be able to install on the M.2, since I didn't have a M.2 to USB adapter, I used the Argon One M.2 board with the USB to USB link adapter (that came with the Argon One) and a USB "extension" to plug it in my PC. Kind of a janky setup but it worked.
      And a small tip, If you setup the Pi to boot on SD if SSD fails, if ever the SSD fails just install a backup SD card using a USB adapter, remove the USB to USB M.2 adapter and you'll be up and running in minutes till you can fix the SSD.

    Déjà vu......j/k..Great video!
    When I set up HA on my Pi4 I couldn’t get my generic/cheap ssd to boot with Home Assistant no matter what I did. Maybe one day when I’ll get a better SSD and try agin. If I do I’ll definitely reference this video. Until then I’m gearing up to try the (datactl move) command. I believe this will allow the read and write files to move to a more stable USB device (ssd) while the read only files remain on the SD. It seems like most people should have been doing this for years now, but just didn’t. We never needed to wait for SSD boot on the pi, we all could have booted on the SD but then wrote the SD corrupting data on any cheep SSD thumb drive all along. 🤦🏻‍♂️

    • @MarkWattTech
      @MarkWattTech  3 года назад

I spent forever trying to get it to boot.

    • @MarkWattTech
      @MarkWattTech  3 года назад +1

      I think it depends on what you plan on running. With the Pi4 / your HA install. You should ideally use a fan and heatsink as they can get really hot. I noticed mine would get very hot when doing anything with cameras and imaging.
      I have used a lot of LABIST cases and GeekPi cases on my Pi’s. They have nice accessible enclosures and usually come in a kit with heatsinks and fans etc.
      I really like the ICE Tower fans because I personally really like the look. My Pi never really peaks over 36° no matter what I’m doing. And the fan is very quiet. Theres not a lot of enclosures for the Full ICE Tower though unless you buy or 3D print a set one. More pricey than some of the other cooling methods though and is bulky.

    Hey, thanks for the video. I little off-topic question since I had massive issues with this: I had an SSD for some month now on my RPi 4 with HA and wanted to integrate my ConBee ll stick within HA. Since you also got the deConz integration and I assume it's working, this seems achievable somehow. My issue is, that the stick combined with a SSD (using a Kingston A400 SSD with an Inatreck Case) won't work. Well, it kinda does work because I can set up the ZHA or deConz integration without errors. But when I scan/go for pairing mode in ZigBee I am not able to detect any ZigBee devices. As soon as I went back from my SSD to an SD (installed today on an SD and restored the current snapshot) my ZigBee stick finds the device within 1-5 seconds. So I am stuck between not using the SSD again or not having ZigBee working, which is both awful. Also, currently in discussion within the HA Forum if you want to jump in community.home-assistant.io/t/list-of-working-zigbee-bulbs-for-deconz-zha-without-special-manufacture-gateways/296459/16

    I waited for approxamitly 15 to 20 minutes to let it install my back up.
    Butt nothing happened.
    So rebooted and the welcome screen reappeared.
    So I logged in with my old credentials to a new HA set up.
    From there on I uploaded my back up file again and let it install.
    Waited again for 15 minutes.
    Recieve a message on my phone that Home Assistant had successfully restarted, an handy blue print I had installed
    (community.home-assistant.io/t/home-assistant-restart-notification/256409/9)
    Yet than again, I could not log in.
    Then I remembered I gave my old Pi an fixed IP adress based on the Mac adress in my router (primarily for duck.dns).
    I updated the Mac adress in the router, and rebooted everything.
    Waited for the message that HA had successfully restarted and there it was.
    It is working just fine, even the duck.dns log in worked like before.
