The reason they used cornstarch and not flour or sugar: Flour mixes with water and it becomes a paste Sugar dissolves in water Cornstarch absorbs water and thickens. That's why you can use cornstarch to make dry shampoo and not flour, or sugar. :)
Well, obviously not! As you said, cornstarch is only good for cooking, and there's a reason for that! But it still gave an opaque layer on the nail with the tip, whereas with flour and sugar it would just become a big mess xD Love your videos btw.
Good points but most nail polish isn't water based anyway so what you're saying almost has no relevance to this specifically. Small corrections: the property of being able to dissolve a substance in water makes it water soluble, neither cornstarch nor flour are water soluble substances, however you are right that sugar is water soluble. I don't know much of the science behind cornstarch but when mixed with water it becomes a suspension (the particles being suspended throughout the water mixture) and also a non-Newtonian fluid, like true quicksand, which might have given someone the idea to use it in this method. :)
My kids love your channel! They are 5 and 3 year old boys, they always watch over my shoulder and talk about how "that lady is really nice!" 😄 love your content.
The acrylic nail powder is very strong and bad to breathe and smell. .so if you feel the corn starch going to your trout how you can handle chemical products?
I did this for about 6 months when I severely damaged my nails after I kept getting acrylic nails, this saved me!! I mixed clear polish and cornstarch to make a paste and found it really worked for me. It took about an hour each week but my nails were so bad I couldn't use my natural nail at all so I was willing to do it!
As a baker, I can fill you in as to why confectioner's sugar or flour wasn't used for this. First off, when confectioner's sugar comes into contact with a liquid or a moistener (At least in the amounts used here), it breaks down and dissolves into the liquid, leaving no form. Even if you were to have a higher confectioner's sugar ratio as opposed to your top coat, the consistency would NOT hold. Cake icing is a perfect example: it's basically a lot of confectioner's sugar with a little moisture, and that's not gonna hold up. Basically the same thing goes for salt and granulated sugar. As for flour, it might hold up it's form under certain circumstances, but it wouldn't set quickly enough, PLUS it has a much higher 'rot' factor. Cornstarch is something used to thicken gravies and sauces, hence a little bit of it in high moisture content. It's most basic function is a thickener and a stabilizer, which is exactly what it's doing on your nail.
The cornstarch doesn't do anything for the nail. It doesn't give support as it is not a hardener and doesn't form a solid or hold itself together very well.
So I used hardening clear nail polish and flour (didn't have corn starch). I did three layers. Filed down. Shaped the nail and they are pretty strong and they have the tapping noise too. I work in retail stock and my nails haven't come off or bender it any way.
@@rashikamohata705 Well 1 fell off about a week and a half getting close to two weeks. But that was because it got caught in this metal thing. But the others remained strong. I like to change nail designs or color very often so this was a great solution without my nails getting damaged constantly by the acrylic.
What I did was instead of using clear polish was use nail glue. I've had my nails on for 2 weeks now- absolutely no issues. I even get the sound of acrylic when I tap them :)
Aubrie Shumway I think she probably painted it on then dipped because Nail glue dries very quickly so it would only make sense for her to paint then dip
This is the first time I heard of using cornstarch & I don't get acrylic nails anymore but when I saw this, I thought it was intriguing. I wonder if dusting it on lightly with a strainer isn't the problem. If you dipped the nail into the cornstarch, much more of the powder would be absorbed into the liquid, resulting in a stronger nail. Dusting is hit and miss and limits the amount of cornstarch. You could see that it was very spotty. Also, nail polish doesn't dry all that quickly. When I polish my nails I use a nail dryer or at least hold my hands in front of a fan to help dry each layer before adding another. I would think that would help as well, even if just for a minute or two between coats.
Yes Kathy I believe she's trying to disprove the cornstarch as any salesperson would want their products to be more desirable I have seen this many times with sales people the strainer is part of that I don't know why it's not more obvious two more people maybe they don't understand any of this process so they're easily fooled. I'm not an expert but yeah definitely makes sense to dry fingers under something that would dry instead of letting them sit like that like she would do with her clients... y'all let's just sit there with no dryer( too obvious) you have to dip your nails in the cornstarch she knows that already. I just find her tone annoying and patronizing as if her method is better building yada yada yada I'm an expert.
Shelly Bradshaw I have to disagree, she’s done reviews over at home nail kits and she didn’t try to discredit them. The reasoning of cornstarch not being structurally strong enough to build up a nail seems very sound to me.
I just repaired a broken natural nail with a tea bag for the first time. I'm so thankful for that procedure 🙏 these RUclipsrs out here saved my nail with a simple 3 minute video.
So, my husband informed me that baking soda might be more effective and stronger than cornstarch, as they use that in combination with super glue in the aerospace industry to reinforce the glue. He wanted me to let you know. :)
I was thinking sifting baking soda into the cornstarch. Not sure you want something used to fill gaps in planes on your nails. Imagine the pain of something that strong if a nail was bent.
I saw a video where the nail tech was using the brush on glue instead of nail polish and it worked out fine. She didn’t do a demo of the build out as you did though. I like how thorough & informative you are in your videos! Great Video !
Not sure why there are so many down votes. I found it pretty interesting. She's not telling you to use cornstarch to build a nail. Just a bit of information to have because she saw it done on RUclips. Lol
Looks like the hate isn't for her reviewing or mentioning cornstarch nails. It's for _not_ embracing them more wholeheartedly. Somewhere in this comment section people are unsubscribing b/c they found Suzie too snobbish about the whole idea.
Tyler James Blair LOOOL that's who it is!! I knew she reminded me of someone.. the way she talks , shows things, laughs , everything. It's exactly the same hahaha. Love suzie
Nail Career Education oh hi, I hope you didn't take this the wrong way 😂 it was a great video, very informative; I'm just not really into fake nails haha
The reason for the corn starch is this: The other materials you mentioned (save flour) dissolve. But also, cornstarch makes a unique structure when it combines with the polish. That's my thought anyway, because of the way cornstarch makes a non-Newtonian fluid.
I agree with Catnolia 333, I wAtch Suzie's videos from start to finish! She goes at just the right pace and verbage. Her videos do not feel long at all! I enjoy them.
Love this! Most ‘professionals’ I’ve met in the beauty industry including nail professionals, hair stylists, and the like are so determined to prove nothing and no one can do it in any other way than the way they were taught and can be a bit nasty about it. I really like the way you treated the technique kindly and even expressed your ‘hope’ that it would work. Nothing but absolute respect for you and this video. You’re awesome!
Lots of people are saying "but it worked for me," or "I used nail glue instead of polish." That's great! Some people also think that smoking bath salts is a good idea but I'll have to take a pass on that as well.
I've been doing my nails like this for years.I put nail glue on the stress point and then ad corn starch, after I just use nail polish and corn starch. The manicure usually lasts me araound 3 weeks
Jessica Harvell i glue down the tip, then i fil in my natural nail part with glue, and dip it in corn starch, then i file it evenly, wash my hands, and put nail polish on,good luck
I always tend to take my nails off within 5-7 days so this is actually good for me I don't need it to last long and nails can be expensive especially wasteful when I'm just removing them within days!
I love love love that you did this only using house stuff we all have, not professional tools only some of us have purchased. Your directions are easy to follow, and no super technical terms. Thank you!!
I’m definitely going to try this. I’m allergic to acrylic, gel, and gel polish and my nails are so thin I can never get them to grow long without breaking.
Ashley Yates I don't think your allergic to all this products. I think what the issue is that there's something in those products that gives you an allergic reaction . Dip powders would probably work better for you then this method. This will hurt you if the tip cracks
Have you tried fiber glass/silk wraps? It gives you the appearance of natural nails but with some serious strength. That was my favorite way to go when I was a tech.
Another option is dipped nails! Just so you know, Susie wrote in the comments that she is unable to do normal chores with this nail because she feels like it’s going to crack off and damage her natural nail
Suzi, here in Southern California none of the nail techs I've spoken to will do formed nails, they insist on tips. The answers I get are, "No good", "take too long", "too hard", "won't last", etc... What do you think the real reason is they don't want to do them? I think your formed nails look so much better than the tips.
chrissy j disagree. It takes me more time to use tips because you have to blend the tip with the nail, etc. The forms. I put them on only use what I need shape the general shape bam in 20 minutes I have all ten fingers are sculpted and that included during time. Tips would take me way longer because you have to size the tips. Glue them on. Blend them to the nail. Shape and shorten if need then put of the gel. Takes me 30 to 40 minutes depending on the person to use tips. And both this times are before filing and the design so I'll stick with my forms lol.
Kelsey Morine-Reid I say the same thing all the time. Forms allow me to correct the shape of a crooked or upward growing natural nail and definitely quicker for the same reasons. I hate tips.
Well, I thought she tries mixing it with hard Gel, to make DIY Polygel. Would love to see a review on that, and a comparison to gel mixed with acrylic powders.
It makes me happy and blows my mind how the comment section is so relateable! I'm here cause of the vibe... I don't wear nails lol! ❤️❤️ Goodnight everyone. Shes what I choose to go to sleep to. Haha😂❤️
I'm with you, she seems like she would be fun to hang with. Those pointy nails scare the crap out of me though. I'm afraid we would meet for wine one afternoon and she would be sporting an eye patch. The only thing that "almond" shape is only good for is doing a 5 finger death punch.
a great stronger way to do this method too is using gel polish. i use gel polish with instead of cornstarch on myself and it is almost as strong as acrylic nails. i do the tips with the 2-3 coats of gel and cornstarch for best results
“You can build a nail with anything really” Actually, I once saw a video and like nail hack where you put straws on as fake nails, maybe you could try that 🤔
Cornstarch is used similarly to turn silicone into a mould~able and handle~able dough that "cures" faster, it works because the starch bonds to the solvent in the silicone/nail polish, and in the case of silicone _which cures from contact with water moisture_ introduces moisture to the silicone, but the caveat is that it is always FAR weaker than pure product, because the end result just has a bunch of starch throughout it with solvent soaked into it that may or may not ever fully escape. [In the case of silicone, which is porous, the acetic acid does escape, but leaves the starch there as a weak point that can take in new moisture at any time.] In the case of nail polish in particular, it means having a bunch of soft starch particulate worked throughout and when put on thick enough may mean it will never be able to fully cure because the surface will harden first and seal the solvent into the starch deeper down making it stay permanently sludgy. Building it up slowly may eventually "cure", but it would always be too weak to be good for nails, due to the presence of the starch. Starch is used rather than flour, or sugar or salt, because of it's fine~ness and it's ability to soak in a lot of moisture [even not purely water moisture] without dissolving. Flour would be worse, and chunky, and more opaque, crystalline things like salt or sugar would likely not work at all. A better solution may be building up layers of resin [aka acrylic or polish] with FIBERS in it [similar to the tea bag trick] where the fibers _in the right balance_ would add strength, build the shape, and not interfere with the evaporation of the solvent. [Think like how fiber glass is really strong, but don't actually work with fiberglass anywhere near your body as breathing it is is a huge health hazard and can cause permanent lung damage or even lung cancers.]
They may very well make fiberglass nails, I would have assumed someone would have though of it, but they aren't going to be using any old fiberglass fibers to do them and especially without breathing equipment or masks, as fiberglass, when breathed in caused micro and not so micro damage to lung tissue. What I was getting at was don't just go around getting fiberglass fibers and using them to do your nails.
This reminds me a lot of when I got dip powder nails done with my first nail technician versus when I got actual formed acrylic nails with my nail tech now. The dip powder nails were so flat and flimsy. Acrylic is really the way to go!
Elizabeth Caldwell, I wish my old nail tech had done a better job. There was always a dip in my nails and she didn't sculpt them. The worst part was they were $40 each application -- that's without tip.
Mia Martinez, well, either way it sucked :( I paid $40 for a full set of one color. And now my new nail tech does a full set with one statement nail for $35. I prefer the formed nails.
I used gel and cornstarch which worked very well, I built it like a normal nail making a paste with the 2 ingredients, then curing it. I used your diy form video and was really happy with my results xoxo
RevTohru They probably mean like actual nail design videos. Yea Cristine uploaded the snow globe video but it was really more of just entertaining content sorta rather than nail art n stuff
I was never interested in doing my nails until i met your channel. Now im fully equipped and creating designs beyond the regular salons in my town. Thank you soooo much 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

SakuraCourageSolo I commented earlier after she said flour sugar salt lol... that's when I thgt about liquid thickener !?!?
Same idea as the starch .
I wish cornstarch was the only thing used to thicken gravy. I can't really get enough outline anywhere, because they use glutenous flour
The cornstarch doesn't do anything for the nail. It doesn't give support as it is not a hardener and doesn't form a solid or hold itself together very well.

Great analysis.
Actually, it can form a solid-a fun kid craft is making ornaments out of cornstarch clay. It's just cornstarch and water. :)

The reason for the corn starch is this: The other materials you mentioned (save flour) dissolve. But also, cornstarch makes a unique structure when it combines with the polish. That's my thought anyway, because of the way cornstarch makes a non-Newtonian fluid.
I love your honest effort to make this work. I really appreciate a professional willing to try something new. Your video was very helpful.
This woman exudes kindness and is clearly not of this world
Thank you for taking the time to show us your take on the cornstarch nail trend!
Happy Holidays Suzie and Cameraman! ❄️🎁😊
Margaux Sharpe *Holodays
Owen S My bad, you right, Happy Holodays and New Year! 💿🎄🎁❄️☃️🎉🎊🛍🎈

Where does her patience come from
The marijuana she also inhales.
D Garcia
LOL I love how you said *also* inhales..😅
Within.
Canada
Idk I'm still trying to find out lol is there a pill I can take lmaoo
Lots of people are saying "but it worked for me," or "I used nail glue instead of polish." That's great! Some people also think that smoking bath salts is a good idea but I'll have to take a pass on that as well.
😒😒
What?
Yeah I have heard of that too.... sausage party hahaha
But I'm allergic to crack. I bet bath salts would be a great alternative!
That’s an extreme comparison to some diy nail art😂😂
I was so relaxed by her voice and calm personality. Does anyone else feel like you can just tell she's one of the sweetest ladies everrr
I've been doing my nails like this for years.I put nail glue on the stress point and then ad corn starch, after I just use nail polish and corn starch. The manicure usually lasts me araound 3 weeks
Rada Aleksic I do that too..Let's me questioning why it didn't last that long on her😞weird..
Rada Aleksic More details please!
Jessica Harvell i glue down the tip, then i fil in my natural nail part with glue, and dip it in corn starch, then i file it evenly, wash my hands, and put nail polish on,good luck
video plz
video plz
well if it doesn't work you can always make gravy
Just stir your fingers in the pot 😂
😂
Ashley Yates ugh, so am I and I am looking for other options
Use IBX abs IBX boost or LCN gel.
Suzi, here in Southern California none of the nail techs I've spoken to will do formed nails, they insist on tips. The answers I get are, "No good", "take too long", "too hard", "won't last", etc... What do you think the real reason is they don't want to do them? I think your formed nails look so much better than the tips.
redhotsweetpotatoe more time to do and possibly more product being used would be my guess.
chrissy j disagree.
I was taught to do forms....those other places don’t want to do forms , because it’s about getting you in and out.... quantity not quality.....!
Rose Perez exactly when i say blend the nail these place probably don't even do that they glue it on shape and go.
Maybe simplynailogical would do it 😂
No way :D
Cristine would never put extensions on her nails xD
I know that but maybe on that plastic thingy she does her experiments? You know what I mean right? 😂
swatch stick?
starkeymonster yeah that 😂
Video should be titled 24 minutes of Suzie Low key shading "Cornstarch nails"
+Ren 10 lol - FUNNY
Fr
Seren Ity 😂😂😂😂
Yeah the whole video gives me "who ever came up with this is simply laughable and should be frowned upon in my professional nail world! " vibes.
I caught that too! I’m low key loving it though.
This is the way to do a tutorial/trial video. Informative and great flow. Perfect editing and filming. Thank you for this.
It makes me happy and blows my mind how the comment section is so relateable! I'm here cause of the vibe... I don't wear nails lol! ❤️❤️ Goodnight everyone. Shes what I choose to go to sleep to. Haha😂❤️
Awwwww/ nighty night 😴😴😴😴😴😴😴
How relaxing is her voice & pleasant is her face?! Suzie makes my anxiety go away 🥰
So what if you do use a nail polish that is ment to be a hardener? Would that possibly work better??
She’s the Bob Ross of nails
Best comment on RUclips!
I'm sorry, but I love the smell of monomer and acrylic...
Abigail Quezada Me too!!!!
And the smell of new shoes
hahahahahah YAS!
Why are you sorry?
N_H As in no disrespect to Suzie's video or anyone else using this method.. nothing personal dude
Abigail Quezada ohh I see....so..why are you sorry lol jk², it's not disrespectful at all tho btw
She's really Cool... I liked hanging out with her.
Nice cool
Charlotte Mason pp
I’m ml
Wow
I'm with you, she seems like she would be fun to hang with. Those pointy nails scare the crap out of me though. I'm afraid we would meet for wine one afternoon and she would be sporting an eye patch. The only thing that "almond" shape is only good for is doing a 5 finger death punch.
a great stronger way to do this method too is using gel polish. i use gel polish with instead of cornstarch on myself and it is almost as strong as acrylic nails. i do the tips with the 2-3 coats of gel and cornstarch for best results
After I watched the video, I understand now that the cornstarch will not work out as strong as the gel or acrylic
Sharon La Tour gel is the best an easy
I think you just gave Jenna Marbles another idea, Suzie!
I've literally been seeing cornstarch nails all day on RUclips
What if u mixed the polish with corn starch then built the nail?
Edit: question answered 2 min later lol
amina ahmed I’ve seen someone do it with just nail glue and corn starch and it worked better.
“You can build a nail with anything really” Actually, I once saw a video and like nail hack where you put straws on as fake nails, maybe you could try that 🤔
Karen Jimenez she has
I never seen someone so passionate about nails
I imagine camera man just shaking his head the whole time
eyy bebe me too!! Lol
This cracked me up lolllll
eyy bebe why?
through quarantine ive been trying too practice my nails because i want to be a nail artist one day. suzie is really helping me out!💕
Your like a more serious simplynailogical!
Amena you’re *
Ok
That's like telling any nail tech they're a more serious simplynailogical. They're nothing alike. Simply isn't a nail tech. That's almost insulting.
Ivy C 💯💯💯💯👏
Amena not really
Do a video where u go to the nail salon and get acrylics and record ur experience or thoughts
Makeup By Kenna that’s a good idea !!
Yassss
She would be perfect for ASMR
That's probably where most of her views come from
April Villanueva ikr
It is!
I listen to her sometimes when I have a hard time falling asleep lol
April Villanueva definitely 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😴
Cornstarch makes the nail stuff and strong. Remember some ppl iron with cornstarch
[In the case of silicone, which is porous, the acetic acid does escape, but leaves the starch there as a weak point that can take in new moisture at any time.]
In the case of nail polish in particular, it means having a bunch of soft starch particulate worked throughout and when put on thick enough may mean it will never be able to fully cure because the surface will harden first and seal the solvent into the starch deeper down making it stay permanently sludgy.
+Scereyaha WELL SAID😀
Thank you
Scereyaha Here I am. Living in an old attic with fiber glass behind the wall.
You do realize they make fiberglass nails right? They call them fiberglass wraps or silk wraps ( uses silk fibers not fiberglass).
Gel topcoat works better and is stronger.
Jamie K-jay uv gel?
Yes!
Would definitely work better but the entire idea is to DIY acrylics, it's amazing how creative people get
Neraelx I used A gel topcoat which didn't need any lamp..and it was very cheap..I made a video about it..
it's still basically a nail polish, but perhaps a lot thicker than just a regular top coat. great video though!
Science with Suzie cause that shit was the best science experiment I've ever seen
Suzie, you are so kind that's impossible stop watching your videos.
This reminds me a lot of when I got dip powder nails done with my first nail technician versus when I got actual formed acrylic nails with my nail tech now. The dip powder nails were so flat and flimsy. Acrylic is really the way to go!
Oh I love my dip powder nails! Sorry to hear your tech didnt do them well.
Elizabeth Caldwell, I wish my old nail tech had done a better job. There was always a dip in my nails and she didn't sculpt them. The worst part was they were $40 each application -- that's without tip.
Monica wow that is shameful.
Mia Martinez, well, either way it sucked :( I paid $40 for a full set of one color. And now my new nail tech does a full set with one statement nail for $35. I prefer the formed nails.
They chose cornstarch because cornstarch is a thickening agent.
I used gel and cornstarch which worked very well, I built it like a normal nail making a paste with the 2 ingredients, then curing it. I used your diy form video and was really happy with my results xoxo
I absolutely LOVE her! Her voice is so soothing, she's so informative and patient. One of my fav channels for sure!✨💗
After simplynailological stopped uploading nail videos, I discovered your channel and you're amazing
Ughhh that's weird. Cristine keeps uploading videos. She uploaded one this week
RevTohru They probably mean like actual nail design videos. Yea Cristine uploaded the snow globe video but it was really more of just entertaining content sorta rather than nail art n stuff
Ughhh she doesnot do serious nail art but what she does is funnn....!!!
Warda Khan back when she started she had a good mix of both
Ughhh hmmm true but nails can be pretty boring soo
Jenna marbles where you at with this ???
I guess the cornstarch would do less damage to your natural nails than acrylic or gel, but it doesn’t seem very strong.
I am thinking this would be good for a special occasion for a day or two.
The music, her voice, her tutorial, her background decor and knowledge are all so satisfying ❤❤
and I don't think ppl are saying its "stronger".....they are just wanting to fill in the seam a bit before polish. ..
Oh, I like her.. I'm really paying attention to this.
I was never interested in doing my nails until i met your channel. Now im fully equipped and creating designs beyond the regular salons in my town. Thank you soooo much 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Suzie is soooo cute :c she keeps it casual and professional at the same time ❤
Yay Canada cornstarch! 🍁💅🏻
Smith I know right?! Same kind in my pantry
Whitetail Darling Have you ever tried the shortbread cookie recipe on the box? Best cookies ever!! So easy to make as well. Why waste it on nails when you can use it for such fabulous cookies!!
Smith what's the deal with Canadian cornstarch. Is that what it's called or.......
Smith Dang Canadas are so nice
Jeny 8675309 Yup, they taste the best 🥧
