I drilled a 1/4" hole in the back of my hives, so I don't have to be in front. I block the entrance with little pieces of 2X4 and then just remove the blocks when I'm done.
I drilled a hole in the back of the bottom board and put a golf tee in it. When I vap them I just pull it out put the vaporizer in up side down turn it over flip the cup acouple times wait till the temp goes back to 450 stick the tee back in and move to the next hive. Love it
Thanks guys! I did treatments yesterday. I ordered an easy vap some time ago. Looking forward to speeding up the process next year. See you guys on the 8th!!
I did my treatments the end of October and just before Thanksgiving , I could of done another a few days ago , it almost got up 50 here in central Wisconsin.
Finished my 4th round of OAV over 6 weeks yesterday. The Pro Vap 110 & Easy Vap work pretty good but they are SLOW. Taking my time, I am able to treat about 70 double deep or more hives in about 2.5 - 3 hours with my Pro Vap EZ 110. Much faster than running 2 Pro Vap 110's at the same time. I carry a gallon bucket of OA with me and an 80 ft. extenstion cord to my Honda EU 2000 and just keep moving from hive to hive & and reloading by jamming the steel OA capsules into the OA bucket. No measuring out OA charges, no waiting for the OA to vaporize off, no having to hold the vap gun upside down. Just drop the loaded capsule down the tube and it vaps off almost immediately. The EZ is pricey but worth every penny in my opinion. Over the past 6 weeks, I am observing a gradual reduction in the amount of mite drop. With this crazy weather, the bees are still producing brood but just not as much. Great video, that was cool being able to see what the bees do with that clear cover on the first hive. 👍 Best of luck!
Kamon with yr number of hives I would buy a couple more johnno vap machines and be putting the oa into two hives at once and moving one vap blaster all the time
It would have been fun to watch with a tripod set up with the camera set to time lapse and both of you working together 😉. But I also agree with another comment... it was therapeutic with the sounds and the rhythm.
I was reading some things on some mushrooms that might help kill mites off and even improve the colony of bees what's curious what your take is on that
Hi Kamon the tops you have are most likely silicone the same type in Teflon probably would cost a lot more to produce but they won't seal as well in the cookpot
Kamon, I've learned a lot from your videos and was wondering is it best to treat early in the morning or late in the evening when most bees are in the hives? Then again, I've heard treat when you can. I purchased a provap from John last year and its the best thing since sliced loaf bread! Wish I could make the conference.
Either works. I just do it when I can. Best when the bees are home but it doesn't make that big of a difference this time of the year if you miss a few taking a cleansing flight
Thanks for the great video, Laurel and Kamon. Was thinking about doing my first treatment ever with the Johnos Easy Vap tomorrow. How long do you leave the towel over the entrance after treating?
I’m new to Beekeeping. Is there a specific type of Oxalic Acid you use? Or does it matter? Thank you for your awesome videos. We’ve learned a lot for you both.
It could make a big difference on killing efficiency if it is not 99% at least. Florida Labs is 99.6% Oxalic acid and is used by a lot of beekeepers. It can be found on their website or here on Amazon amzn.to/2LyKGfr
I did my OA treatments the other day but there is still some brood in my hives and like Bruce H I don't think they go completely broodless here in South Carolina. Thanks.
I like your videos! Thank you! I'm in central Texas. I tested for mites last week and found 3 in a sample of 300 using the alcohol wash method. I had planned to treat with OA in December, but there is still a full frame of brood front and back in the lower box. What would you do in that situation?
Hey Carrie excellent job on doing an alcohol wash. The devil is in the details in beekeeping! You currently have low 1% infestation which isn't the end of the world but it is harder to clean them up with brood. If you are wanting to just use oxalic acid vapor then with this little of brood 3 treatments is what I would recommend. I would do them a week apart. Apivar strips would work well also but they are an added expense and a synthetic treatment. Keep up the good work!
How long do you have to keep the towel over the entrance? Can you please start showing the apimaye hive with your other hives. For example it would be nice to see the treatment for those small little holes on the entrance. If it is a problem or just as easy as the big hives.
Hi Kamon Reynolds. Although we are having (SE Michigan) a somewhat milder than normal Winter, it has still been too cold for cleansing flights since November, with highs in the low to mid 30's forecasted at least until 1/18/21. When we eventually get a decent day in the 50's and they go off on cleansing flights in large numbers, would that be a good day to treat with oxalic acid vapor, in your opinion?
U know Kamen i only smoke my beehives with my Hive smoker and use a aprivar tray and have done it that way for probably 15 to 20 year's and we get along good

Great video ,very interesting . My concern is ,if this is toxic to breath .What about eating honey that will be produced in the hive next season? Does that process put toxic chemicals in the honey that will be eaten?
First it is illegal to use with honey supers on. Second it isn't toxic it is burning to the lungs and if a lot was eaten it can cause gut problems. We eat oxalic acid everyday (especially if you eat healthy greens) and Oxalic acid is present naturally in honey. Small doses like this without honey supers on are completely safe and do not build up in the beeswax

The easiest time to kill Varroa mites is when the hive is designed. If you change the hive environment by changing its design features you can be varroa treatment free. You just need to make an environment that reduces the varroa replacement value over each generation. This is not so hard. Forget chemicals. The reason is likely to be that the climate is hot and humid, both factors of which can benefit the bees against varroa in their own way. The propensity for varroa to die away in a humid hive was found out by accident when a laboratory hive was accidentally left at a higher humidity than others and that one lost its varroa. The precise mechanism of varroa destruction by humidity remains a bit of a mystery, but with a very small creature it probably drowns it. The standard vertical bee hive entrance at the floor level of a thin walled vertical hive with ventilation at the top causes a cooling stack (or flue) effect internally. This cools the hive in winter and takes away its humidity all year. If, in a standard vertical hive the bee entrance/ventilation was placed at the top of the brood nest (under the queen excluder in summer) a VIBEZ (Ventilated Integrated Bee Entrance Zone) is formed giving a “bucket” of humid air in the brood nest below. Wrapping the brood boxes of a thin walled vertical hive with aerated concrete blocks is also a major benefit for the bee’s thermo-regulation duties, particularly in winter. The temperature of the brood nest is important in the fight against varroa as it affects the pupa hatch period and therefore the time available for the varroa to mature in the cells. The temperature over the time of day and position in the brood nest affects the pupa temperature. Below 29C. and above 37C. the pupa die. At 35C. it takes 10-11 days to hatch. I also make and sell vaporizers and cups. Mitey Vap can be seen at "Steve's Outdoor World" youtube and sold on craigslist. For well over a year now.
could you please list John Oliver info to order the easy vap please I am visual impaired and cant seem to find it
That apparently is the correct spelling of his name because that’s the email I used to order my Easy Vap
john_olivier@msn.com
Note the second i and the underscore between John and Olivier
@@beasbeesrva2615 thank you
Do you do a mite count before and after or just perform two rounds of treatment a week apart?
2 rounds a week apart. I don't checking this time of the year for 2 reasons. 1. I know there are always some. 2. Any bees that I kill in an alcohol wash are likely winter bees that are needed in February for build-up
What about the bees that are out flying around don’t they just bring their mites back into the colony?
what does it do to humans if we inhale
burns your lungs like formic
what its size of the dose
2 grams a deep
Sometimes all of my acid doesn't come out of the cup. Thanks !!
Happens to me also. It happens when a little gets burnt and goes up and makes what is in the cap rock hard before you flip it over
Every time I have used Oxalic acid half my queens have disappeared.
🇹🇷🇹🇷👍
You should really try to grow better genetics, to help combat the V mites, treatment free is the way to go those poor bees look like they were freaking out thinking they were dying you could hear them smacking that clear dome I feel bad for them
Been there done that. Doesn't work well.
