Lived here all my life and never knew half the things you mentioned. Thank you. I think its a shame that local schools in Ayesbury, don't seem to give some kind of history of the town to those who live within.
Thank you very much Simon. It is wonderful to see the historic places connected to my family. Some of my ancestors are from Aylesbury. Alfred Hayward and his wife Caroline Bartlett left Aylesbury, in the 1800's, sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and settled in the area of Cobourg and Rice Lake, Ontario, Canada. There is a monument in St. Mary's Church cemetary that commemorates some members of the Hayward and Rose families. It was recently rediscovered after being covered with vegetation for almost 100 years. I believe there is also a plaque inside the church that mentions a William Hayward. I look forward to viewing more of your videos.
That's fascinating, next time I got to St. Mary's I'll have a look for the things you mention. I'm thinking of making a Part Two, so watch this space. Best wishes, Simon
What an amazing video, I am passionate about history and archaeology, I am still learning English and want to study more about archaeology. I would like to learn more about Aylesbury in the mercia kingdom period. Thank you for the video! 😊
Thank you for this extensive video. I have just moved to Aylesbury from London. Only a week in this town and totally loving it. The canal goes right behind my new house, you can even put your feet in it. ❤️❤️❤️
@@simonguettier Loving it. 6 weeks already. Time goes fast, I haven’t explored yet only been to one of the flower gardens. The first thing I bought in Aylesbury was a plant 🪴 lol 😂 All the best today for England 🏴 Lets bring the cup home.
Thank you Simon for taking the time and trouble to make this enthralling video. Interesting and informative and very well edited. I am about to start work here and was keen to find out more about the historical significance of the town before I do so. Just so I can show off to the locals :) I'm travelling from the North of England and you will agree it's quite a contrast. Looking forward to it though given your fascinating guide.
Really appreciate your comments. Perhaps we'll bump into each other when you get here, I reckon I owe you a beer! I'm thinking of doing a 'Part Two', quite a bit more to cover. Best wishes, Simon
Thank you so much! I am moving here from South East Asia soon as I return to the U.K. after a few years working away and your video has been very informative indeed. I used to live in Maidenhead, Berks, so know Aylesbury, but not too well, and this has helped greatly. Thank you for taking the time and effort.
Kev, that's very kind. I have to be a bit careful re: isolating and Covid, which makes getting out not v easy - but there's definitely an "Aylesbury Part Two" in the offing, just a question of when I make it ...
Interesting to see someone else doing stuff about old Aylesbury. The bit at the end about the Great Train Robbery I think is incorrect. The court hearings were at the Rural District Council offices in Walton Street. I have many photos of that period. I see you've bought my books too :)
Hello Karl, how good to hear from you ... you are, of course, correct about the Great Train Robbers, as I've indicated elsewhere in the comments. The trouble was, in researching the trial I didn't factor in that the buildings used have now disappeared and wrongly assigned other buildings to the story. I've left in because the video is quite difficult to edit ... I've subscribed to your channel which I wasn't aware of, a wealth of Aylesbury material which I know I'll enjoy. Best wishes, Simon
Aylesbury is my dream town. I will definitely live there one day.thanks to sharing this nice video. I feel live there when i watched this. Love from sri lanka 🇱🇰
fantastic video. Very interesting. wonderful how the people in the old photo of market square/Kingsbury were all talking and seemed very relaxed. Perhaps life was slower and perhaps more friendly..
Hi Simon Really interesting video , are you sure that the Train Robbers were tried at the County Offices that you showed ? All the photos I’ve seen of the trial venue show a horrible 60’s building that was located in Walton Street and is referred to as Aylesbury Rural District Office and which seems to have been demolished and replaced with a development called Veridian Square . I’m hoping to visit Aylesbury next week to see some of the places you have highlighted.
Hi Jimbob, thanks for your kind comments, but you're dead right, Train Robbers trial was indeed in a now demolished building, didn't realise when filming. Enjoy your visit and make sure you include the Kings Head pub, well worth a visit. Best wishes, Simon
I was born in Aylesbury, sadly My Twin didnt survive tho. But it was just 4 months before the Gŕeat Train Robbery . This is a Wonderful Video and Presentation . Thank You 🙂🙂
i had to smile when i saw the St Mary’s churchyard clip ... behind used to be The Derby Arms and i still remember mid 1976 ish i think , a story about a ghost of a man who commited suicide by jumping from the top windows ... summer holidays and kids used to surround the churchyard every night in hope of a sighting ...never did see it
Ooh, thanks for the fascinating story! Yes, I've seen the Derby Arms on some of those websites with pictures of old Aylesbury, it's just a house now. Glad I didn't go filming there at night!
Sounds a bit like the story of Jasper Jackson? He lies in the graveyard there and the legend was that he murdered his wife by pushing her down the St Mary's crypt stairs (or possibly the other way round depending on who was re-telling the story) A search of his name will bring up a few related articles and even a dedicated YT video.
Hi Gareth. During Covid I thought it had closed - letters on doormat unopened, garden overgrown etc. But I believe it is open again, though they haven't really updated their opening hours on their website. As much a restaurant as a pub now I think, quite expensive. But it is a nice pub, yes.
Nice video ,very informative Regarding the Battle if Aylesbury ,the road that runs past the battle field is the A41 heading out toward Bicester not A413 heading out toward Amersham.
I think it is actually the A413 - as you can see in Google Maps here - I was filming on Holman's Bridge itself www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Holman+St,+Aylesbury/@51.8285661,-0.815848,16.48z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x4876f70d20a38423:0x802ae431b6967e75!8m2!3d51.8276743!4d-0.8225512?hl=en But, hey, what's in a road, pleased you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching.
@@simonguettier It is indeed the A413, the A41 and A413 cross as they pass through Aylesbury which is where the confusion comes from. To think I run past this bridge (on the wooden pedestrian bridge) many times a week and never knew of its significance.
@@sunsoundlive Ha ha thanks. Yes, definitely the 413. Looking into history is amazing - and, of course, when researching the video I have to find the places. So, no, I too had no idea of the significance, despite having passed that way myself many times. Perhaps my favourite 'research' though is a visit to the Kings Head pub - just to check up on a few facts, lol. Lovely pub, though haven't been since pandemic started unfortunately.
