I got rid of my dining room table awhile ago, and changed it into a simple beautiful lounge off my open kitchen area. I moved my storage couch from the living room into the lounge area. People love it when they see it. It opened up the space, and now I can chat with my husband while he is sitting in the lounge, and cook at the same time. No television in the area, just a beautiful view of the back patio and trees. Dining table wasn’t used much. Children grown, one out of the house, so I had a floating table made that seats two; attached it to the other side of my half wall that looks into the kitchen. If any one cared to eat on it, they could. Space more functional now, and the lounge is used more often than when the dining room was there. It’s a hotspot now, but no social media is allowed. The living room was changed into an enclosed open air Be-living room, a bed and breakfast with living space for guest. The whole concept done within 435 sq ft.
I totally agree about the lack of proper storage in the dining room. I've been looking for a sideboard with drawers to store flatware and other pieces such as napkins and candles. All I can find are sideboards with shelves which are good too but should not limited to shelves only. Drawers in sideboards used to be standard but not anymore, sadly.
I agree! I love the look of the rugs under a table but they are not for me or my house because they’d get so gross and dirty and I couldn’t imagine having to clean it all the time.
I'm not sure why anyone would think that people no longer have sideboards/buffets in their dining rooms. When they don't, it's usually a decision made because of a lack of square footage. Sideboards/buffets have been around all the decades of my life, my mother's and grandmother's lives, and all the generations before us.
Will never get rid of mine. I inherited it & I love it. Love the storage & love having it to sit food on when I entertain. These fads that come & go are just that fads. Keep what u love 😊
Yes, I bought the dining set. I like similar pieces because it keeps my OCD in check & I don't freak out! I don't have plates that match the table, I also don't a matching bedroom set, (no thank you, A$#!:*/ Furniture store) I have similar colors yes! Mostly because I don't want everything that everyone else might have.
I eat at my kitchen table breakfast /brunch and dinner daily. On weekends, I force myself to eat in our dining room.... It's literally 10 more steps away.... I feel super lazy , but it's totally worth the effort. I refuse to eat on a couch!!! This discipline, actually allows my meal to be a meal vs a non stop nosh session!!
I moved 6 months ago to a smaller home. I bought the oval expandable Mid Century Modern dining table. Also wanted the chairs to be mid century so I bought the Zola chairs. Therefore they do match (supposed a faux paw) but putting another that wasn’t modern would look out of place. These chairs are also low profile and tuck right in which is good for my smaller dining area
I have a collection of 7 crystal decanters that didn't pop until I put them on a mirrored tray from World Market. The mirror reflects light and makes the decanters sparkle like jewelry. It was a good purchase that made all the difference.
I am going back to the old school! I am going to host dinner parties in my home and leave the TV off to increase conversation. I totally agree with clearing the dinning table to not being so cluttered. Thank you a million again.😁
I actually have a matching dining room set, but my table setting and other decorations get so many compliments! I don't have the space for any storage - but I do have what some call a pass-through, and if I need to remove items from the table I can quickly place them on the counter.
There is a plus to purchasing a blank slate matching dining room set. You can use dining seat covers, tablecloths, and chair pads to make the set '"Yours". The accessories come in many colors and patterns. With dining table accessories, you can change things out inexpensively while letting your unique personality shine.
I’m styling my dining table so much it’s now my workplace (since the beginning of Covid). I prefer losing my dining area than going back to the office).
Hi Kiva! We eat in the kitchen at a side desk like niche with two swivel counter chairs and in front of the kitchen tv. As children eating in any room other than a kitchen was taboo. But as a mother I let my kids eat in the den while watching the big tv. They still do that. Works for us as a family. The dr table is large and mostly used for family gatherings. But not everyday even though it’s in an accessible part of the house. We have to pass through the dining room to get to the den. But that doesn’t stop us from eating in the den. I have a matching table and chairs in the den and it matches the sideboard the china cabinet the curio cabinet and the secretary desk and a little triangle table!😂 I like the set. But I have a huge custom mirror and a nice chandelier and a big enough rug for it all! 😉❤️🥰 I liked that sideboard from Walmart! Good work !
I love the dining room storage tip! Just shove whatever you want in there, nobody cares! Lol I'm in a one bedroom apartment and don't tell anyone but my dresser was full of clothes and I kept it in my dining room. I was pretending it was a fancy credenza lmao I styled the top w plates n everything
We have an upright piano in our dining room, AND a leather club chair!!!! How am I supposed to fit a sideboard/console there too???? And hey, I thought you said in an earlier video that consoles/sideboards are OUT!!!!??? Which is it young lady? :)
I love you KB!! Gf I eat sitting on the couch lol. Sometimes I sit at the table . But more the sofa than the table. Thanks for the insight on dining rooms and tables . Have a blessed week ahead darlings
I took a beautiful antique quarter sawn oak dining room table with 4 leaves (circa 1920) to Habitat for Humanity to donate (not because there was anything wrong with it but because I wanted a new style after having it for 20 years) and they wouldn’t take it because it didn’t have matching chairs! I said: nobody should be buying a matching dining room table and chairs, it doesn’t look good! They still wouldn’t accept it. 😩
I got rid of my kitchen table a few years ago so I’d have room to expand my island space. My dining room table was unused most of the time, now it’s used every day.
I keep my table pretty cleared off with a single faux cherry blossom bonsai type plant. This way it becomes easy for my grandchildren to use for art activities plus I have a sideboard next to it which I use for a Iight and a few photos. This way it doesn’t become overly crowded in that space. My sideboard is has 3 drawers across the top and 2 shelves which I have matching baskets that hold various necessities. Some for the grandkids. Also, I definitely eat on the sofa. So cozy 😊😊. I rarely eat at the table. I wouldn’t have one if I didn’t need one for the kids and company.
I do not have a lot of decor on my dining room table, but I do have some candles. I put a faux leather tray under the candles so they can be easily removed if the space is needed. It is not cramped or cluttered when on the table and there do not always require moving. When I do move the tray with candles, I place them on my sideboard.
Eating on the sofa?! No way, for shame. Lol. The tip about keeping your decor on a tray is one of those things that is both genius & so simple you ask yourself, why did i never think of that?
Hi Kiva … good topic! We are Australian and we have always eaten around our table … even in our small house and with 3 kids … we treated it as important family time .. and I’m happy to say our family values this time!! NO rug underneath and a tray to corral whatever is on the table! 😊
I live in very small duplex and after 2 years recently decided to buy a smaller couch and bought a Teak Dining Table so I could finally eat not hunched over. I eat all of my food at the dining table and love it. Also I don’t even own a tv so definitely not eating in front of one 😅
Thanks for the video! You've given me stuff to think about! Having just moved into a place with an actual dining room after almost a decade of living in tiny apartments with microscopic kitchens that couldn't practically fit even a small table and two chairs, I am so damn excited that I am eating almost every meal that I can in the thing. Relaxed breakfast and coffee in the morning! A weekend lunch with the sun streaming in! Dinner in the evenings catching up on the day with my husband! It feels like the biggest goddamn luxury just to have the space to begin with that the urge to rush off to the TV or computer with my meal is considerably diminished. I definitely want to make it look as nice as I possibly can, while keeping it functional.
When you were showing the chandelier in the dining room, I noticed the wood storage in the fireplace in the background. How are you supposed to get wood out of there? Better get a ladder! Thanks for a funny yet helpful video, KB!
I almost bought a dining set yesterday, just glad I didn’t 😄 because I liked different chairs anyway. I’ll head back today and get the chair I liked with the table I liked as well. Thanks I really needed this vid today
New subscriber here. Just wanted to let you know how much I love your videos. They are so helpful, and I need help! Your personality is an added bonus, too. You are sooooo real!! I'm so very happy I found you! ❤❤ thank you for sharing...everything, and be well
Absolutely agree about over table-scaping. If there are so many decorations on the table that you can't eat, you're doing it wrong. I'm talking about you, P. Allen Smith.
I don’t have the luxury of having a separate dining room (one day I will) but I do have a decent eat-in kitchen. I love styling my table. Yes I have 2 candles but I enjoy lighting them for dinner sometimes and use them. And yes everything on a tray or lazy Susan in the center so it’s pretty but functional and can be easily moved for food and playing games after dinner. I think runners are much more practical than a whole table cloth but I love a layered table for a special occasion. I am one of those people I do not enjoy eating on the couch. One rule for me, my table is not a drop zone or junk piling spot this way it’s always nice to sit and enjoy your meal.
We eat at our kitchen table, and we use the "formal" dining room for holidays...but instead of dining room only being used 3x a year, we also use it for game nights and pot luck parties as well as regular dinners, with friends while all the kids eat in the kitchen. But when I'm alone...it's couch and TV
When the children were growing up , or now come to visit , we always use the dinning table - when it’s just hubby and I , it’s the island bench or at the tv
We eat breakfast at the kitchen table and dinner in the dining room as a family everyday! No phones or tv allowed. It’s about love, good food and conversations.
Sometimes going larger on a dining rug is not an option. (Kitchen, living room and dining table are all within a 300 sq area) Especially if you live in a small home. :/ So you just do the best you can with the space you got.
We use both the dining room and eat in front of the TV for movie nights. We also entertain in the dining room for game nights, dinner parties, holidays, potluck nights, bible studies, and more. I still see people using table cloths and runners!
Uhm. We always eat at the table as does everyone we know. We live in France and meals are important social times so always at the table. We don’t keep stuff on it though as it’s in constant use
I choose to not have a dining table in my integrated living/kitchen area. I`ll have it only in my garden, for 6 ppl. I think it's a big piece that requires so much space and let's be sincere, not everyone uses it nowadays like you said. So my choice for my space will be a nice size coffee table and side tables for each side of the sofa.
Oh no, what to do if I already have the dreaded matching dining room set? It’s beautiful cherry, my husband chose it, I can’t stand to part with it. Well….maybe you can do a video on this problem? I absolutely love your channel and look forward to every new video. You look amazing, you’re brilliant at what you do and always leave me inspired, educated and smiling.
Choose a complimentary but Not matching sideboard or China cabinet. Add a large rug, Reupholster your chairs in something bold or in two or more fabrics that go well together and a third fabric on the windows. Add two captains chairs or upholstered chairs at the two ends of the table to brake up the matching look of the chairs. These other items add interest and you really don't notice the matching chairs and table.
My husband and I are retired with no kids left a home. We usually eat dinner in the TV room and use our coffee table for the plates, etc. However, we do entertain fairly often -- I have friends over for breakfast/brunch, lunch, family for dinner and holidays, host meals before card games, etc. We use our dining room for all entertaining.
We eat at the dining table every night. Open floor plan with TV near. I'm having trouble finding the right sideboard. I didn't get the matching one, but I'm having trouble mixing woods. Not sure how.
I am going to change my dining rm to a loungy bar.I have a buffet with drawers and bar armoire.I have been searching for a bar height round table and 3 chairs I want but too pricey.I will get there tho! Summer project. Also have paint my big bar armoire ..ugh 😩.My dining room table has been used as laundry table a couple decades and I cant take it !!
We used to eat in the kitchen at our dining table. But since we moved to our new house that has an open concept, my husband and I sit on the couch most of the time, while our three, messy kids are relgated to sit at the dining table. 😆 We can all still see the tv though and that is basically the big shift that happened when we moved - tv at dinner time has indeed become accepted/the norm. Honestly I can't say I think it's a good thing. But it's so nice... 🙈
I actually do eat at my dinning room table for almost every meal. Otherwise its usually at my desk in my design studio. I HATE trying to balance plate and all on couch arm and folding tv tables......of course, I also don't own a tv and am by nature quite formal, so I am an oddity
The hubs and I are 50/50. We eat on tv trays in front of the tv a few times a week. The rest of the time and/or if the meal has the potential to be messy (marinara sauce, tacos, etc) we sit at the dining room table. Our living room rug is white so we don’t take chances, and our dining space was just redone so we like the space
My big issue with styling my dining table is thenheight of the decor. And that is because I want to see my family members when we eat, and pretty much everything is just in the way. Right now I have a plant in the middle of the table (it's a large, round table) and even that is too obstructing of the view, in my opinion. Anyone have any tips for this? Having nothing on the table makes it look SO bare and boring.
I have an issue since my living room & dining room are combined. Its relatively difficult to keep things cohesive but also defined. Everything is currently blank like the freshly painted walls.
we sit are our kitchen table to eat most frequently. We can watch our tv from this space. I have an almost 100+ year old plus harvest table. It expands to allow up to 15 people at it. We keep it plain because we have Sunday night dinners at my house with about 10+ plus people every week. Our biggest problem is finding chairs.
I am using my dining table as a storage because I don't have any other space to put my stuff. It's filled with boxes of storage freezer bags, large pots, a large air fryer. I have no pantry so I had to get a shelf display for pantry foods, my kitchen is tiny. I think maybe I should move to a bigger place...
I think the bigger challenge is keeping family members from using that dining table as a storage space.
Yes!!!!
perhapse people fill it up with decor, so no one could place his clutter there?
Too true 😂😂😂
I am constantly removing items dumped there 🤣😞
I don’t see why people insist on “dining” on what is clearly the sewing-and-homework-and-also-some-paperwork-I-will-totally-put-away-later table.
I bought a matching set but you learn my style through the set, the side table, rug and the other decor in the room.
Totally agree!
I got rid of my dining room table awhile ago, and changed it into a simple beautiful lounge off my open kitchen area. I moved my storage couch from the living room into the lounge area.
@@suesue983 Thanks for your comment. As I stated, I'm looking for a sideboard with 'drawers' primarily. Credenzas do not have drawers.
You can always use a dresser as a buffet
Get a wide dresser!!! Or a buffet table with drawers @reneebrady1001
I’m a no rugs under the table person, you know that rug is full of crumbs and difficult to clean. But I love all the other recommendations!
A low pile rug would be a better choice for those who chooses to have a rug under their dining table
i have two dogs. they shed and lay on the rug. it is too difficult to keep the rug clean.
Yes I love them, their a classic. My mom and grandmother had them.
you are right. Lack of sqm, which is way more common in big cities.
Will never get rid of mine. I inherited it & I love it. Love the storage & love having it to sit food on when I entertain. These fads that come & go are just that fads. Keep what u love 😊
Same, my house is too small, thus I don’t have one
Yes, I bought the dining set. I like similar pieces because it keeps my OCD in check & I don't freak out! I don't have plates that match the table, I also don't a matching bedroom set, (no thank you, A$#!:*/ Furniture store) I have similar colors yes! I use two contrasting thrifted plates that store a pretty butter dish and salt and pepper shakers for the center of our dining table.
I know that you are a lot younger than me BUT I am always, always, learning from your talks. Never missed. Love the nails,Girl. Thank you so much.
My husband and I eat every meal together at the kitchen table. It’s a time we can sit together and enjoy “our time” during a busy day.
I am going back to the old school! I am going to host dinner parties in my home and leave the TV off to increase conversation. I totally agree with clearing the dinning table to not being so cluttered. Thank you a million again.😁
I’ve done this and it makes a huge difference!
I come from a long line of chefs and they taught me, white only. This is because food presentation is an art and you don’t want the plate to distract
I actually have a matching dining room set, but my table setting and other decorations get so many compliments! I don't have the space for any storage - but I do have what some call a pass-through, and if I need to remove items from the table I can quickly place them on the counter.

We are eating all over the place, besides the dining room table 😂💯🙋🏻♀️
Exactly 😂
Facts! 💯
I tried using the dining table one evening instead of the island and to my surprise everybody joined me
Hi Kiva!
We eat in the kitchen at a side desk like niche with two swivel counter chairs and in front of the kitchen tv. As children eating in any room other than a kitchen was taboo. Oh my gosh you had me 46 seconds in you are so funny "circus on dining room table" & of course inspirational❤
Thanks so much, Linda!! So happy you enjoyed the video :)
I scored very high on the proper decor for my dining room. Thanks for the confirmation!
🤣😂🤣😂 I ain’t telling nobody
Love this, thank you for this info. As a fellow interior designer I’m glad you made this video. Thank You 🙏🏽
I totally agree with you, too clutter on the dining table. My family eat in the living room in front the TV and we love it. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching!
We have an upright piano in our dining room, AND a leather club chair!!!! How am I supposed to fit a sideboard/console there too???? And hey, I thought you said in an earlier video that consoles/sideboards are OUT!!!!??? Which is it young lady? :)
Love those artworks behind you ❤
I love you KB!! Gf I eat sitting on the couch lol. Sometimes I sit at the table . But more the sofa than the table. Thanks for the insight on dining rooms and tables . Have a blessed week ahead darlings
Have a wonderful, relaxing weekend!!!
Those thrift stores are weird like that.
oh wow! how funny! Did you sell it instead? @hsmd4533
@@camis.1347 no, I ended up donating it to a different charity 😀
I got rid of my kitchen table a few years ago so I’d have room to expand my island space. My dining room table was unused most of the time, now it’s used every day.

I think you were referring to a “charger” which is the plate that sits underneath the dinner plate to frame it. I blame my mom for knowing this
It was silly of me for the word to slip my mind!!! Your mom is a good one!
I agree. I am there!
You sent me!!!! “No one even uses their dining rooms. You know you eat on the sofa.” Do you have a camera in my home?!? I feel attacked. 😅

We eat breakfast at the kitchen table and dinner in the dining room as a family everyday!
No phones or tv allowed. It’s about love, good food and conversations.
Loved the dishes. Of course all the ideas too. Thanks.
Sometimes going larger on a dining rug is not an option. (Kitchen, living room and dining table are all within a 300 sq area) Especially if you live in a small home. :/ So you just do the best you can with the space you got.
That's definitely true!
We use both the dining room and eat in front of the TV for movie nights. We also entertain in the dining room for game nights, dinner parties, holidays, potluck nights, bible studies, and more. I still see people using table cloths and runners!
Any advice for installing a wet bar in the dining room? I feel like it would tackle two issues, the enclave of wasted space and adding storage
That’s definitely possible you can DIY it or pay a contractor/designer to do it
Any thoughts on mismatching dining chairs?
Uhm. We always eat at the table as does everyone we know. We live in France and meals are important social times so always at the table. We don’t keep stuff on it though as it’s in constant use
That's great! A lot of us in the US don't!
Same in my country especially with elderly relatives.
Yes, sitting together encourages conversation rather than watching something on television or the phone. So, no TV or devices during dinner or lunch.
Hi. How do you pick good looking dining chairs if you shouldn't do matching sets? I tried not to match but I think I failed. 😢
I love your eyeglasses. Where did you get them?!
We a dining table family. I think most people with kids sit at a table for main meals. 😊
I choose to not have a dining table in my integrated living/kitchen area. I`ll have it only in my garden, for 6 ppl.
I love my dinning furniture to match, thank you very much.
Finally I have a room that is perfect! 😂
We eat in our eat in kitchen 😊
Love it!
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!!
I used to over decorate bc We never ate at table, btw you looking great.
We eat at the dining table every night. Open floor plan with TV near. I'm having trouble finding the right sideboard. I didn't get the matching one, but I'm having trouble mixing woods. Not sure how.
Is it bad to put a tablecloth on table if it’s not a quality piece and it will scratch if I don’t?
😂 i love be a pretty tablecloth. Adds some interest and even my placemats are.seasonal
I love my dining room decor I have expensive china on it .. ppl love it !!! It does look lovely and I love your channel
❤
We used to eat in the kitchen at our dining table. But since we moved to our new house that has an open concept, my husband and I sit on the couch most of the time, while our three, messy kids are relgated to sit at the dining table. 😆 We can all still see the tv though and that is basically the big shift that happened when we moved - tv at dinner time has indeed become accepted/the norm. Honestly I can't say I think it's a good thing. But it's so nice... 🙈
Great video. . . I’m guilty when it comes to my area rug.
‘Cause everyone eats on their sofa’ 😂😂😂 💯 💯💯
What’s a good distance from dining room rug to living room rug?
We always eat at the dining room table. It is just my husband an I now but, even when our 3 sons lived at home, we ate at the table 90 % of the time.
Nice video! You sound so very relaxed today. In recent times, you appeared to be racing.
It’s just excitement 😊
Love your glasses 👍
Thank you!!
Right on point as always 👍🏾
I like a lot of your advice, but I hate hate hate dining table rugs! Gross to have that under the table and I want to easily slide my chair.
Maybe a smaller plant or like someone here mentioned a tray with salt and pepper or pretty decanters, or a tray with fruit
I sit on my couch, I eat my food, and I watch my TV. Wouldn't have it any other way.
Love your tips! Thanks!
"It had the black and gold, does it get any better?" Careful your Pittsburgh is showing 😂
Omg you’re so right 😂😂
I have an issue since my living room & dining room are combined.
We definitely eat in front of the tv, and our coffee table is our old dining table top repurposed!
Do people still use curios for storage? My mom loves to display dishes that we don't get to use😂.
Ha! We have a dining room and rat in kitchen table and we never sit at either unless we have guests. Dining room is just for looks!
Lately, I've been sitting at my dining table because my TV isn't working. So I'm sitting at the table with my laptop 😂
