Firing the Biggest Clay Pot I ever made

- This adobe brick kiln works well to fire pottery. I recently made this large pot from raw earth sourced in the pit next to my hut. This pot will be used to collect and store water.
The process for firing this pottery is simple.
1) I place some wood and kindling in the kiln.
2) Then I light it with hot coals collected from the fireplace in my hut.
3) I allow all the wood to burn down.
4) Then I push the coals and ash away from the middle and place two bricks in the center of the kiln.
5) I place the pot on the bricks.
6) I stack dry branches of wood all around the pot.
7) The hot coals will slowly catch fire and soon all the wood will be engulfed in flames.
8) The fire will burn for about 30 minutes.
9) The next day after the fire burns out the pottery can be removed from the kiln.

When I watch your videos, my soul is healed. thank you.
Hey Chad! If you add green matter to the fire once the pot is almost done, it will have a soot layer that you can rub into the clay. This not only looks good but it can make the pot water resistant. Get more info on this from the Cherokees. Examples are at several museums but my favorite is in Chicago at the Natural History museum. That one has a rounded body with a square lip and it is scored with diagonal lines not often seen in Cherokee original art. Do the soot layering inside and out for a near water proof pot!
Interesting. I did not know that. I will have to experiment with that idea. Thanks for sharing.
Wow Chad. Amazing pottery work. I must say, with the music and the flames rising up the kiln and you walking round ... it looks ceremonial
It is very much like a ceremony.

Great video and a really nice pot. I love the new kiln.
From Russia With Love))
Just the right length to feature this. Thx for doing this, filming it and sharing it with us.
Now that is a badass pot. Can not wait to see it in action in your future videos!
Thank you, Chad. You inspired me to try pottery. I ended up digging up some clay yesterday, and will try to purify it today.
I hope it turns out well.
Dude. Awesome. Your pot making journey is progressing well.
WOW! Chad, that's awesome! What's next? Have you considered doing a Greek style Amphora? With the big handles I think it would be very useful to transport a large amount of water.
Yes, I have thought of that. However, it would be tough to carry in this rugged terrain.
@@ChadZuberAdventures true, though I think it would be fun to show us the paths you have to take to do things like going to get water, where you have to go to collect the Cactus fruit, etc. A real "day in the life of Ivan Denisovich", only of Chad Zuber.
@@ChadZuberAdventures true, although, I haven't really seen how rugged it is, I've seen a few difficult spots, something that would be fun, I think, would be to film the paths you take to get to places you must go daily, weekly, monthly, etc, and why. A literal 'day in the life' much like Ivan denisovich.
Chad! ❤ it is so mind blowing what you make out of dirt. This man is a treasure trove of info. I'm waiting for this hurricane to pass so I can go outside to work 😢
Yes, it's dirt that has a high clay content.
Thats a big pot, nice work!
Google Tradutor: Excellent video! It shows, in a simple way, how to burn a clay pot. Thank you very much!

I can’t wait for the Illinois weather to settle down for a bit so I can get back to pottery
Is there snow there?
@@ChadZuberAdventures yeah. And it was raining yesterday and the day before

Nice one dude :)
Wow nice as work! Great pot mate
Thanks
Love the shortie in between full episodes. Thanks Chad!
Thank you!
Wow absolutely amazing
Try to forge some crude iron. You need some ore from sand from the river channel, hematite and charcoal
I haven't gotten that far yet, but maybe soon.
Ficou lindo o seu trabalho parabéns
Me relaja ver tus videos. Ahora con esa musica aun mucho mas.
By the way, Chad, have you tested whether those pots that you want to place in the garden allow water to permeate with the cooked pot? Maybe it is more interesting not to cook them.
Yes, I test them. I have to seal them a little to reduce seepage. Not cooking them would just cause them to crumble.
Hell yeah, Chad! That ones a keeper for sure!
Yep!
👍👌👏 Oh WOW, simply fantastic! That's quite an excellent result for the kind of clay and killn you have. The pot looks great and sounds strong too. 2) Please kindly allow me to suggest something: You once made tiles for the floor inside the hut. Please fabricate some more and use them to cover most of the killn's upper opening to prevent heat loss and to save firewood.
Thanks a lot for making explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health in particular.
👍 awesome 😄 great video 🥰
Beautiful vessel!
nice pot dude

Hello my fish story friend...been a while.
I was just thinking of what an awesome fish chowder you could make in that !
Oh yeah, fish chowder, clam chowder. Everything will taste great in this pot.
Nice!
That pot turned out to be super dope I love it :)
Have you ever considered marking charcoal and using that in the kiln?
Yes, I have. I just haven't done it yet.
Impressive 👌
I mean no disrespect to your other wonderful videos, but this one was exquisite; temporal, long enough to satisfy and short; with the sweetness of your accomplishment; so succinctly captured within a soundscape that called deep within our shared genetic memory. Thank you Sir. I feel connected in a deeper way; with the earth that we all share. Peace... m out
Some people like it, some don't. I'm glad you liked it.
Absolutely stunning work Chad! Is this going to be another Garden tool?

I like the long vids but I feel like doing these shorter vids may be a good idea to draw in more subscribers, at least I hope so! 🙂
Also the music sounds like Heilung, is it?
Heilung? No, it's some Mayan music by JImena something. But yeah, the short vids are just an easy way to add more content. I can edit a video like this is a little more than an hour. My longer videos take 12-15 hours to edit.
@@ChadZuberAdventures Oh? Interesting, it sounds similar. The editing thing had crossed my mind too 👍

Outstanding, Chad!!! I am really looking forward to another episode of you and Andy Ward making pottery in the wild!😍

It suits you better with that haircut and that shredded body, not sure you notticed. A beard would seem the natural progress! And a weapon of war! 💪🏻
With a beard I look 80 years old! It is also so annoying to have a beard. No more beards for me. Thanks though!
Which country are you from?
Why not record a video of how to prepare this clay jar
Pottery videos are super intensive to make because the process takes a few days and I have to wash my hands after every single take because I can't get mud on the camera.
What are you going to use it for?
Storing water.

Chad. Do you think you could sell your pottery? ❤
I don't know. I would have to try and see what happens.

Great work, but please make your videos longer.
What? I have lots of long videos. Am I not allowed to make short videos too?
@@ChadZuberAdventures~ Don't get your suede knickers in a twist, Chad. I don't mean anything insulting. I totally enjoy your videos & like spending time watching them. That is why i get a bit disappointed when the videos i have been eagerly awaiting are short. Keep up the great work.
Hey, what if you make some musical instrument or tambourine and try to make primitive music?
Yeah, I want to make my own music. Just a matter of time.
I also watch HTME here on RUclips, I'd love to see you collaborate with him. I think he'd really enjoy your ideals.
I have no idea who that is.
@@ChadZuberAdventures His channel is called "how to make everything" And he started out in the literal stone age, much like you. Now, several years later, he is building Leonardo Da Vinci's pedal powered wood lathe, and working on drawing wire for his own industrial revolution. It's a fascinating channel, and one, like yours, that I take great inspiration from.
@@mattparker9726That sounds really interesting

@Chad Zuber, have you made Gin from the Juniper berries around your hut? Have you made distilled alcohol at all yet? I think that would be super useful to you there at the hut. Not only is it tasty, but also at a high proof, you could use it as fuel, like in a lamp, perhaps? I bet that would be a bright flame, or if not bright, hot. Perhaps you could design a sort of alcohol stove to use for cooking when the weather is very hot. Additionally, I think ethanol can be used as a refrigerant? I'm looking at this video here. ruclips.net/video/V3abp-Tw6sI/видео.html
No, I have never distilled alcohol.

Joder esto está muy baby Dont germi 🗿
Good one for long-term storage.
Is it fully waterproof? I'm not sure, that firing temperature was enough for pores to close completely...
The Chinese have been firing large pots for hundreds of years with dry grass fires to produce black pottery, I'm pretty sure a juniper fire is a lot hotter and longer
You need to seal it, grease with do the trick.
The pot will be sealed using natural ingredients.

Short video why
Because I wanted to make a short video
why don't you make a well out of stones and clay it will be easier
Have you tried digging in this earth? It is hard and full of rock and clay.
I found the video I was think9ing about when I made one of my other comments, Look at the design, and the fact that it's made from Adobe, something you already know how to use. Also, don't be put off by the size of the construction, this is for an entire city. (I think it could be scaled down) ruclips.net/video/tnJms_3Gbuk/видео.html
Wow, that's so interesting. I never heard of such a thing before.
@@ChadZuberAdventures yes, I hadn't either, I simply put in 'making ice without electricity' in RUclips one day, and this video popped up.
shorter videos are harder to get into, at least for me...
Seems like my longer videos are hard to get into as well.

Will you grow your hair long again Chad 🤔
Never
Dude 😎 😃
to short
Life is too short
Watching this, made me think in most of your videos you work in the daytime. One of the giant advantages to artificial light is the ability to work for longer hours. To that end, I will post this video link of Andy Ward's work on a well sealed oil lamp. ruclips.net/video/77zCU23pq3c/видео.html Maybe you could take inspiration from it?
Hahahah, I saw that video recently. Currently I use candles for light at night. I make my own candles. I do want to make oil lamps. But I already do some work at night. My work day is generally 12 - 14 hours long so I don't really need much more working hours at night. I'm so exhausted at the end of the day anyway.
@@ChadZuberAdventures LOL yes, I didn't mean to imply that you weren't working hard. It's obvious that you do. But since I can't be there to help, I am always thinking of things to improve, albeit armchair style. 🤣🤣
@@mattparker9726I appreciate that
This video was Too fuckin short 😠
Bro are you married?
Yes
🤦 Promo-SM
ngl that's a pretty average sized pot
it's pretty big considering the soil he's working with. i'd say he did a good job!
Why are you been negative?
that's the biggest he made so far
simmer down jr
Wild clay is a lot softer then the store bought stuff. So when shaping the pot you can expect a lot more drooping that may cause cracks when drying. You must also bear in mind that there was no assistance from a pottery wheel. You should also account for the fact that the firing method use is not as predictable as an electric or gas kiln
Hola Chad.
