For those who care to learn...Chad does a great job and I know what I know from both training and a long life of experience. Here is a hint for small stream or creek fishing. The fish are generally smaller than you would like so catching more is what you need to do. Make more traps and place them in tight bends of the waterway. If you can, add rocks in the shape of a funnel stretched out on either side of the trap opening. If you find your waterway is too straight, you can grind up worms or refuse from a mean and wrap it in grass. Leave it loose enough to allow some to slowly escape. Turn your trap around, the hole facing down stream and put the bait ball at the other end. you might do well to wrap the pointed end a bit more with grass to control the water flow. That flow will release the food. Tiny bits will flow downstream and it will attract fish that are passing the basket and fish from below. Once they find the hole, they will eat and hang out. If you put a few branches over the basket, stuck in the mud and held in place by rocks, they will hang even longer so you lose less when you are ready to collect them. If you trap is empty too often, do what Chad is doing, analyze the reasons. You are looking for food to enter a hole about three inches or less in an entire waterway of hiding places! You need to hedge your bet by adding baskets, flow control, enticements and frequent observation.
One last thing...set your traps in the morning, collect food and eat then go down stream a good ways and bathe. The fish will turn back if you are a presence they are not used to or they will dart past you. If they go around, put traps in those areas. When you put rocks to funnel, make them cause the water to flow faster. A small catch can be survival but more importantly, it can be a lesson. No matter where you are and what you are in need of, nature has figured out how to keep you from getting it. As Scrooge McDuck says, "Work smarter, not harder!"
This has been a PSA from: A Nana.

@@ChadZuberAdventures It started as a child for me. My father died when I was a baby and back then life was pretty hard. My brother and I were toddlers and mom didn't know what to do with a baby girl and boy in diapers. Our neighbor had a dog so at 2 ish I learned of my love for animals. This led to her babysitting. I spent a lot of time alone because my brother, to this day, is very self absorbed. I would build tents and forts or find a place to hide in and make it a home. There were no other kids around and the woman did what grandma types do, let us play unsupervised and run when she heard a crash! LOL.
This continued my whole life. To this day I still seek adventure in nature by any means possible. I am now disable though so I live vicariously through people like you or those on tv shows like Naked and Afraid or Alone. You Tube is both good and bad for people wanting to live closer to a natural life. From misinformation to overconfidence, death lurks where more informed people have already gone.
I ended up raising myself and at 13 I was riding motorcycles and finding places to camp alone. By 15 I had was living on my own. It would be too dangerous these days. I was very pretty when I was young and there are some stories that would curl your toes...but I always survived. Then one day, just before she passed, my mothers mother told me a secret. She said she was full blood Cherokee. Back then, being Indian wasn't the badge of honor as most people see it today. She was the wife of a southern Baptist Minister and being native in North Carolina meant you were dirty and dumb...well...that is what the white folk thought anyway.
It was then, at 17, I found my true self. I have spent my whole life learning and practicing the ways of The People. I am a storyteller, a healer, an artist and historian of artifacts and survival techniques dating as far back as I can go. America has a uniqueness that I admire as it is land where not many feet have tread before the whites arrived.
So..that is my story and each thing I suggest I have done in order to survive being poor or homeless. But, I have never felt poor and my home has a blue dome in the day and the moon is my nightlight in the evening. Please....stay the way you are, it is wonderful.

I once constructed a primitive toilet as a project while camping. I first found a nice large private tree in a convenient spot. I then dug a hole at the base of the tree. I gathered and shaped 3 sturdy branches with a 'Y' shaped fork in them and drove them into the ground close to the tree in a triangle pattern. Then, in the nook of the forks I laid 2 smooth and shaped branches that could support my weight. This setup let me have the tree to rest my back against and the branches as my seat. I gave it a "test run" and it performed well.
Since you already made yourself a primitive sink before, you should come up with your own primitive commode, Chad. 😆

You can make a primative basket (large weave) to hang above a slow part or pool in the river. Put dead animal in basket large enough to attract lots of flies. Once the flies go to town the maggots they produce will fall through the basket weave into the water. It will fatten the fish and make a good fishing hole. Use maggots for bait. Or you can just sautee the maggots :)

As a man that rose up near a small river like this, let me tell three things: turn the basket other way around. Food smell that attract fish go downstream, and fish tend to go upstream.
Second: make more traps. More is better than few. If you catch more than you need you can always release. But when catch is not good, it can save the day.
Third: try fence-type trap. It can cover more of the stream and easier to make. Or make wings for this basket-trap, it can help too.

Try and make a weir with rocks in a narrow part of the stream and funnel the fish into your fish trap. Go upstream then whack the water with a long thin willow branch. Scared fish will head down stream to get away from you. Or so goes the theory. Or place your trap along the edge of the stream in a dark shady place where the like to hide. Bait and wait. Wish you luck.

If you research fish trap with rock fence you can find examples done by survivalists and indigenous people around the globe using similar fish traps but making a small fence across the stream using rocks or sticks shoved into the mud. That funnels the fish into the trap. Also once the fence is made. Stirring up silt upstream of a school of fish will drive the school of fish into the trap. Then you let the ones you dont eat go. Only take what you need. Great video. I enjoyed it alot

Also in survival making sometimes even dozens of traps increases your odds. Active fishing is use of time that can be more successfully used making more traps for not only fish but small game. It could be in a person's best interest who is trying to sustain their diet not only off of foraging. To make several fish traps and small game traps such as snares and dead fall traps.

Your fish trap was fine, but I think you need to put some rocks or stick some sticks into the river to funnel the fish, so the only place they have left to go is into the trap itself. You can also make larger stone weyrs and that will funnel fish into certain spots to make spearing or fishing easier.

Next time try to put a trap in this place 13:09 (under right rapid, even without bait), or in another where there is a narrowing of the stream... or make it artificially from stones... such traps work well only in narrow places or back to back to the shore... there where you set the trap, it must be left for a day or more, and without bait it will not work at all ..
