The scene where Om saves Shanti from the fire in the field, as crazy as it seems, was a reference to a real-life event! Actor Sunil Dutt saved actress Nargis on the set of Mother India in pretty much the same circumstances, though he was the main lead, not an extra. Him and Nargis would marry after that movie. Their son Sanjay Dutt was one of the cameos in the Deewangi Deewangi song!

One of my favourite reference is overacting of Om's mother like character of mothers from 70s movies 😂 & that dhoom reference during award ceremony, they say dhoom 5. It's like saying fast 10 because Dhoom movie series is like fast and furious franchise. These are just few references. There are so many small funny moments which makes you laugh because of how silly they're in the film. 😂 Sometime SRK makes fun of himself through the character he's playing. Because Om Kapoor's character is literally him in real life. Ofcourse he is just making fun of himself. In real life he is really humble, witty and well spoken person.

Guys most Bollywood actors don't sing! SRK didn't sing in this movie or any, because he really can't lol. That's why "his voice" sounds different in every song in the movie. This isn't seen as a negative thing btw, the playback singers are famous in their own right and tour and everything. It is just another collaborative element of filmmaking. Film music is the main source of popular music in India, so people want the singers to be able to actually sing. A positive of this is you don't have to be super hot to be a successful pop singer in India, and your career can last well into your old age.
this movie is the best example of that idea of "you gotta fully and intricately understand (and love) something in order to parody it" also farah khan has made two (2) shah rukh khan movies (the other is main hoon na) and they are both the best shah rukh khan movies so clearly she's doing something right
Those songs were actual super hit Bollywood songs.. Like they were doing parody of lots of super popular songs.. They are actually imitating the actors of the original songs.. So kind of homage to that entire era and it's cinema and actors.. The scene of him saving shanti from fire is based on a real life story of an super popular actor and actress.. the original pair ended up marrying each other.. The scene where they are doing the fake western shoot out scene, SRK is playing parody of one of the best south Indian actor of all time - Rajnikanth..
I love Shah Rukh Khan and have tried to watch any movie he's in, my favorite (and my introduction to Bollywood) is Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The first act can be a bit cringey but the second half completely makes it worth the watch. It's the most beautiful love story I've ever seen.

I literally bought the soundtrack to this after I was in India when it came out: the music was BLASTING literally everywhere and there were 5 million billboards promoting it, what a time to have gone there
All three of our lovely hosts agreed that 70s Om could have just passed away at the burning mansion and while I agree, him being born at the hospital reinforces the theme of retrubutive justice. Just like how no good deed goes unpunished and Om became collateral damage during shanti’s murder since he tried to save her, the filmmaker also emphasizes that people can change for the better and be rewarded for it. The actor who sees to Om’s medical care was the same one who completely forgot abt his wife’s pregnancy whilst talking abt his awards. While he was being waited on, hand and foot on the red carpet, he is seen taking his wife to the hospital himself n also stopping to save another a stranger’s life while his wife is in labour. This supposed shift in his focus from himself to his loved ones as well as others is what ensures someone as loyal as Om is reborn to him as a son. Of course this also facilitates Om to give Mike his comeuppance.
As SRK put it once that Farah Khan is the biggest fan of the movies and he’s a close second. P.S. The movie was a reinterpretation of ‘Bombay Dreams’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber which the director worked on.

as a bollywood lover from birth, i loved watching these guys discover and be awed by it! but with all of their comments about being so awed by the level of detail and richness in the details, now i really just want to see their reactions to some of the newer Sanjay Leela Bhansali movies! because i spent half the time listening to them just thinking, "man, you would lose your MINDS if you'd seen some of the period pieces bollywood does". also agree that it would have been nice to have a guest who actually had more applicable bollywood knowledge they could contribute to the conversation, *especially* since they chose a movie with as much industry meta as OSO for their first foray into bollywood.
This podcast needs an Ian level enthusiasm for the Bollywood movies. So many things I wanted to add and was shouting at the screen. I love that Bollywood is making a mark but I think we need someone more enthusiastic about the art.... like Lilly Singh. This episode caught me by surprise in the best way possible 😭😭😭 Om shanti om is one of my absolute favourite movies and it's a love letter to Bollywood movies. Absolutely love that y'all not only watched but loved it too.
I wish they could’ve talked about all the cameos (example: the director in the first scene being the lady fighting SRK for the jacket) and all the references to older Indian cinema (some I’m still only learning years later!). It’s so fun to hear them talk about this movie and I can precisely recreate those scenes in my head from rewatching it so many times. I rewatch Om Shanti Om at least every year (already done for this year) but I’m inspired to go watch it again just to appreciate it all.

Also, the disco song and Dhoom Taana was a tribute montage to movies that came out in the 60s-70s (they included the OG actors and scenes from those songs). The tennis court scene song is called, Dhal Gaya Din. The award show scene with SRK's movie previews were parodies to movies he's done with his go to move of opening his arms with a girl running towards him 😂 Movie suggestions: Kal Ho Naa Ho, Laagan, Ram Leela.

Yaar I was thinking the same too 😮😮. Neil is nice and all, but his lack of understanding made me cringe. As an Indian how could you fail to not recognize an iconic scene from Karaz or mention the late great Rishi Kapoor. Also that our beloved Farah was a choreographer that is why the dance numbers are so magical. But my favorite scene is the film fare award one, so many icons hamming it up 😅😅😅😅, Dhoom 5, Khiladi, and ".....naam thoo soona tha"😂😂😂😂.

The sheer joy I got when I saw this come up in my feed this morning! One of my absolute favorite movies and my intro into how great Bolly and Tolly wood really are.
Though I concede to the fact that you miss a lot of references by having this be your first Hindi Film, I think it was the best move for me, it's like it takes all the industry tropes, boosts them to 11, and says "well audience, this is us over here, take it or leave it" When I'm selling it to new watchers, I always describe it as a trial by fire, if you can open your heart to Om Shanti Om, you may have opened yourself up to loving another film industry (in my case, one that didn't abandon musicals the way Hollywood has)
The soundtrack of this movie is elite - as a nri who is trying to reconnect with my roots, I loved the songs and Main Agar Kahoon is the first Hindi/Urdu song I learned to sing in its entirety.
That brown guy labelling Indian cinema as "sOuTh aSiAn" boils my blood. Stop labelling everything good India produces as non-Indian. Korean cinema isn't called "east-asian cinema". American cinema isn't called "far-western cinema". Indian cinema is INDIAN CINEMA.
Feedback - SRK wasn't in the 70s films but it was a homage to old school Indian / Hindi cinema. Also there are equally famous playback singers. Love you guys but y'all should do a little more research before recording your reaction.
I still shun Bollywood as a Desi but thats mostly for reasons like misogyny and lack of creativity. All that being said even i have exceptions like Swadesh and Taare Zameen Par, the later was one of the first time I saw myself in Desi cinema as someone with learning disabilities.
There are plenty of Bollywood movies that empower women, and there are more prominent and successful female directors in Bollywood than Hollywood. I don't think it's fair to shun all of their creative output due to the misogyny of some. That'd be like shunning all of Hollywood after watching Michael Bay movies.

I want to clarify one thing that Zac said: the songs are actually sung by playback singers. It's not actually the actors singing. The songs are recorded separately and the actors lip sync on screen. I’m happy they did this but pissed that talk about how hot the other actors were. And I’m surprised they got an Indian that doesn’t know much about Indian cinema. OM Shanti OM is definitely one of the South Asian film where the songs are understandable. Like first disco song and Derdy disco song are literally a part of shooting, Then him and shanti, where 70,80 and 90s were represented is also a song from movie but he imagined himself and changes the face of male leads in his imagination, the date song, like him and his bff planned a dreamy date, you see they are in a set, playing. The after party, I mean It's a after party. The sad song,which you have got, and the last big one, which OM choreographed to tell him the story (a literal musical)
So glad yall watched this but i cant believe you didn't bring up the plot twist at the end! That theme that plays throughout ties in so beautifully to what happens in the last scene of the movie, just hearing it makes me cry from how devastated I was by the ending.
I literally just watched this movie recently. One of the best films and one of my favorites of all time. I LOVE and am OBSESSED with Bollywood movies. SRK as well as Deepika and all of the actors in that movie were great! I was hooked the entire movie! I would LOVE for them to make an episode on the movie, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, a classic and also features SRK in it too! Really great episode, loved hearing your commentary!

Although I love the comedy, glitz and glam, I also hope you’ll cover the other side of the coin. Would love it if you could do a movie like Fire (1996 - Deepa Mehta). The reason it’s a guilty pleasure is because it covered a subject so deeply hid at the time, that it caused protests in India. So rather than a popular understanding of a guilty pleasure, it was a literal pleasure because it covered a topic people were made to feel guilty about. Throw the term on its head!

Loved this! I haven't watched the movie since it first came out but the nostalgia really hits. Great cast, in my opinion! I'd like to recommend '3 Idiots' (2009). Also a fun movie to watch!
i think when this movie first came out i loved it, and then kind of shunned it, and then as an adult, i was like wait this is actually such a brilliant film from a filmmaking standard. and some of the tropes that 70s om does are things that teenage and adult Indian women fall in love with those moments and want those kind of moments with their SO, and the music is stuff we want to walk down the aisle to.

I wish they could’ve talked about all the cameos (example: the director in the first scene being the lady fighting SRK for the jacket) and all the references to older Indian cinema (some I’m still only learning years later!).
It’s so fun to hear them talk about this movie and I can precisely recreate those scenes in my head from rewatching it so many times.

Also, the disco song and Dhoom Taana was a tribute montage to movies that came out in the 60s-70s (they included the OG actors and scenes from those songs). The tennis court scene song is called, Dhal Gaya Din.
The award show scene with SRK's movie previews were parodies to movies he's done with his go to move of opening his arms with a girl running towards him 😂

Yaar I was thinking the same too 😮😮. Neil is nice and all, but his lack of understanding made me cringe. As an Indian how could you fail to not recognize an iconic scene from Karaz or mention the late great Rishi Kapoor. Also that our beloved Farah was a choreographer that is why the dance numbers are so magical. But my favorite scene is the film fare award one, so many icons hamming it up 😅😅😅😅, Dhoom 5, Khiladi, and ".....naam thoo soona tha"😂😂😂😂.

okay i haven't finished this video yet and idk if anyone else thought this, but what i thought when i first watched om shanti om a couple of years ago - the second half of this film is hamlet, right? like a guy realises that someone is a murderer through supernatural means, and puts on a performance of the murder to expose the murderer's guilt? it's genuinely incredible i love it so much
Okay, Farah Khan was a huge Choreographer, not a Cinematographer. The sheer joy I got when I saw this come up in my feed this morning! One of my absolute favorite movies and my intro into how great Bolly and Tolly wood really are.
Though I concede to the fact that you miss a lot of references by having this be your first Hindi Film, I think it was the best move for me, it's like it takes all the industry tropes, boosts them to 11, and says "well audience, this is us over here, take it or leave it"
When I'm selling it to new watchers, I always describe it as a trial by fire, if you can open your heart to Om Shanti Om, you may have opened yourself up to loving another film industry (in my case, one that didn't abandon musicals the way Hollywood has)
The soundtrack of this movie is elite - as a nri who is trying to reconnect with my roots, I loved the songs and Main Agar Kahoon is the first Hindi/Urdu song I learned to sing in its entirety.
That brown guy labelling Indian cinema as "sOuTh aSiAn" boils my blood. Stop labelling everything good India produces as non-Indian. Korean cinema isn't called "east-asian cinema". American cinema isn't called "far-western cinema". Indian cinema is INDIAN CINEMA.
Feedback - SRK wasn't in the 70s films but it was a homage to old school Indian / Hindi cinema. Also there are equally famous playback singers. Love you guys but y'all should do a little more research before recording your reaction.
I still shun Bollywood as a Desi but thats mostly for reasons like misogyny and lack of creativity. All that being said even i have exceptions like Swadesh and Taare Zameen Par, the later was one of the first time I saw myself in Desi cinema as someone with learning disabilities.
There are plenty of Bollywood movies that empower women, and there are more prominent and successful female directors in Bollywood than Hollywood. I don't think it's fair to shun all of their creative output due to the misogyny of some. That'd be like shunning all of Hollywood after watching Michael Bay movies.
Listen, Bollywood is not an underdog. They’ll always have 1 billion people in their audience who love all the singing, and dancing. I’m also not basing this off of one film you know, I’ve been watching Bollywood, my whole life, did you not read the part where I said I am Desi? I am actually South Asian. I’ve been watching Bollywood movies longer than I’ve been watching Hollywood movies.

I never said that Bollywood is an underdog. I just wanted to assert that many of the films you automatically shun due to their origin are actually great stories about women, many times written and directed by women too. You're not morally superior for generalising and writing off Bollywood btw.

I want to clarify one thing that Zac said: the songs are actually sung by playback singers. It's not actually the actors singing. The songs are recorded separately and the actors lip sync on screen. Love that you guys covered SRK/this movie! My favourite movie of his is Darr, where he plays the villain/anti-hero.

OM Shanti OM is definitely one of the South Asian film where the songs are understandable. Like first disco song and Derdy disco song are literally a part of shooting, Then him and shanti, where 70,80 and 90s were represented is also a song from movie but he imagined himself and changes the face of male leads in his imagination, the date song, like him and his bff planned a dreamy date, you see they are in a set, playing. The after party, I mean It's a after party. The sad song,which you have got, and the last big one, which OM choreographed to tell him the story (a literal musical)
So glad yall watched this but i cant believe you didn't bring up the plot twist at the end! That theme that plays throughout ties in so beautifully to what happens in the last scene of the movie, just hearing it makes me cry from how devastated I was by the ending.

I literally just watched this movie recently. One of the best films and one of my favorites of all time. I LOVE and am OBSESSED with Bollywood movies. SRK as well as Deepika and all of the actors in that movie were great! I was hooked the entire movie!

Although I love the comedy, glitz and glam, I also hope you’ll cover the other side of the coin. Would love it if you could do a movie like Fire (1996 - Deepa Mehta). The reason it’s a guilty pleasure is because it covered a subject so deeply hid at the time, that it caused protests in India. So rather than a popular understanding of a guilty pleasure, it was a literal pleasure because it covered a topic people were made to feel guilty about. Throw the term on its head!

I'd like to recommend '3 Idiots' (2009). Also a fun movie to watch!
i think when this movie first came out i loved it, and then kind of shunned it, and then as an adult, i was like wait this is actually such a brilliant film from a filmmaking standard. and some of the tropes that 70s om does are things that teenage and adult Indian women fall in love with those moments and want those kind of moments with their SO, and the music is stuff we want to walk down the aisle to.
