The Truth About Teething: Everything Parents Need to Know!

  • At birth babies have 20 teeth hiding within their gums. Over the next 2.5 - 3 years these teeth are going to ‘erupt’ and break through the gums. This process is what we know as 'teething". When we can correctly identify teething signs and teething symptoms we can help relieve some of our little one's discomfort by providing teethers and other teething tips. As parents it is also important to know what are not teething symptoms as this will ensure we seek appropriate medical help when needed.
    So in this video I cover when babies start teething, what is likely to be your baby's first tooth, how long teething lasts and what are and are not teething symptoms. I also share lots of teething tips and remedies to help provide teething relief for your baby. And share what teething remedies are no longer recommended and can harm your little one.

    Great video. There's a lot of disparity between advisors around the start of teething symptoms. I'm constantly coming across mums online convinced their baby has been teething for weeks, even months without a tooth erupting. Many say healthcare professionals have confirmed teething! But the research says teething symptoms appear shortly before a tooth erupts.

    My fiance's mom told me that my daughter was teething when she was 3 weeks old because she put her hand in her mouth/drooled. 🙄 I even asked my daughters pediatrician at her 2 month appointment just to confirm that she wasn't and when I told her that the doctor said no she just ignored me and the next time we visited her she put a frozen teething toy in my daughter's mouth without asking me first and she started screaming. It's so frustrating to have someone not accept what you're telling them and give your child things without asking first! 😡 Sorry, rant over 🤣
    (Thank you for this video, it's helping me identify when my daughter is ACTUALLY teething! 🤣)

    Hello i love your videos! In your video about floor seats you have a lot of people asking about the Upseat, which claims to be designed by physical therapists. Could you please respond to these people with your thoughts on this floor seat? I had never considered buying a bumbo or anything but I had considered buying an Upseat because they claim to be designed to promote hip development and proper posture.

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  3 года назад +5

      Hi @Sasha personally i have not use the Upseat with any of my clients. Generally I do not recommend floor seats l because this sometimes lead to babies being placed in the sitting position before they are ready. From what I have seen of the upseat and read I would say it is better then the other floor seats because it places the baby's hips slightly forward (anterior tilt) which ensures the baby does not adopt a curved back (however if your baby is sitting with a curved back they are not yet ready to sit up in these floor seats). There does appear to be a bit of space around the baby's trunk when sitting in the Upseat which means they can work on correcting their body posture if they fall very slightly off centre. I would always recommend a high chair over a floor seat for mealtimes because your baby can use it for years and sit at the dining table with the family which is important when learning to eat solids. Overall the features of the Upseat do appear better than other floor seats but personally I would use that money to purchase a god high chair and other developmental toys.

      I'm a first time mom and a bit worried that my 7 month old baby doesn't have his first tooth yet (comparing to some babies around his age). I sometimes think he has teething symptoms like excessive drooling and biting but there are no teeth eruption eventually. I guess i'll just have to wait for his teeth to come.

    Love from Germany! My first daughter (now 26months) almost never fussed while getting teeth. Had all teeth by about 16monthd.
    My 6month old has really been struggling with it now. We are hoping for the first tooth to come through any day now 🙏🏼
    She likes chewing on wooden toys or a plastic spoon

    Thank you for sharing such important information
    I have a 10months old baby boy who is not yet teething. Been seeing the signs but teeth don't come out
    Should i get worried or perhaps be little bit patient?

    His hands, he eats them vigorously, like crazy and salivating too much. He doesn't suck on his pacifier but he chews on it. Started around 3 months. He just turned 4 months last monday, I can tell there's increase of saliva. Is this sign of teething?

    My 5 month year old is teething! His little tooth irrupted and you can see the white coming out the gums 😣 He went through a sleep regression for sure and wanted to be held the whole time!

      Hello, my baby is almost 5 months old and he also wants to be held at night. Do you have any tips of how to put him to bed at night or alleviate the pain?

      Just the ones I mention in the video - providing a gum massage is the most effective.

    My baby is only 2 months old, he just turned 2 months and has teething pain, drooling, fussing, not eating and is clearly in pain when I touch his gums lightly, is this normal for others too, I'm stressing out so much and so is my wife because it seems too early..also solid food is not an option because he's too immature for that, can't even hold stuff in his hands yet so teething rings and stuff won't work right now...also keep in mind I'm in zambia, Africa, not many options in these ends.

    I've read USA studies that states gum massage soothed teething babies back to sleep 20 mins sooner than teething rings. Our little one tho prefers chewing HARD on anything cloth and of course, our clean fingers

      I did frozen wet cloths and our fingers were always the best

      My little one loved chewing on my finger but tended to prefer soft foods until the teeth came through.

    What about Tlismi moti ? Is it recommended to use for babies with teething pain?

    • @EmmaHubbard
      @EmmaHubbard  3 года назад +1

      I am not familiar with Tilasmi Moti but from what I read it need to be worn around the baby's neck. Based on this it would not be something that is recommended due to the injury risk.

    When baby first initially begins teething, they do get a slight fever. At least my son did. And he hasn’t had one since. Just the usual symptoms now, that you have mentioned.

      Yes and they do get diarrhea sometimes as well.

      I’ve also heard that teething can cause a weaker immune system, which can cause baby to catch a bug and get sick and thus a fever. Who knows…? 🤷‍♀️
