Dear Miss Maria , Good day to you. Thank you for sharing your videos. I enjoy watching your long videos especially when I am doing my exercise routine. I saw this video and got myself a Maxillaria from ebay just now. I hope you continue to make these informative and entertaining orchid videos ! Happy Growing !
+Harley Quinn Awwwwwww thanks so much!!! ...because of comments such as yours I am thoroughly inspired and motivated to share my deepest passions. I am glad you like the long videos...because majority of mine are long...not on purpose though! LOL! I always TRY to keep it down to at least 10 minutes...but it doesn't always work...I love to cram my videos with a lot of information and footage that makes it easy to follow...so it is almost impossible for me to do short videos...LOL! ...so I appreciate that you can appreciate them! :) ...and Maxillaria's are fab!!! CONGRATULATIONS on your new purchase and indeed HAPPY GROWING!!! :)
sherylintheraw Thanks so much!!! I was pleasantly surprised with this Maxillaria...it has really become one of my favorites. Hoping all is well and HAPPY ORCHID GROWING!!! :)
Fabulous video :) I love this orchid so much. Each time I see them in the store I stop and check it out. These pseudo bulbs are so cool aren't they :).
Bill Bevens Thank you Bill, and they are WAAAAY TOOOOOO COOOOOOL! It was love at first sight for me!!! ...just the foliage alone gives such a wonderful an ornamental display...and then to add blossoms that smell like coconut...that just shot me to the moon! LOL! I am very excited and I am hoping I wasn't too rough with him at such a weakened time...I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that perhaps it will still give me some love by providing me at least one fragrant blossom.
I am so sorry for the delayed response...A BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!!! ...did she bloom for you this time around? The blooms and the fragrance are amazing! Thank you so much for watching and HAPPY GROWING! :)
...mine was also a bag baby and she was able to bloom for me....I keep it in vanda type lighting and it has done considerably well for me....I am hoping that it will surprise you in the next bloom season! :)
Very nice and knowledgable presentation.Best on utube.I am more Cymbidium, but I have others as well. Thank you from Melbourne Australia. You have been really helpful.
Thank you for watching and you are so kind to say. I do appreciate the positive feedback and am very happy that it has been beneficial to you...That's what it is all about...learning and indeed growing together! ...and OH CYMBIDIUMS...HOW I LOVE THEM SO!!! Unfortunately they don't care for me in the same way... :( The weather here in Florida can be brutally hot...and our winters are very light and often times do not get cold enough to trigger them to bloom....so alas, I must admire them from a distance in other people's collections. Sending you much love from Florida and thank you so much for joining me on my orchid adventures...my new found friend in Australia...HAPPY GROWING!
Maria, Maria Maria... My big girl Maxillaria did a total 360°. Remember the photo I sent you back in the summer months. She was in health condition in her new pot and well, now I have 3 divisions in a 4" pot. She developed a mold fungi problem. I repotted it and disinfectant her and the pot. After a few weeks the foliage started dropping off the the bulbs were turning blackish brown. I'm in total shock rite now. The only thing that I say is WTF happen! I was thinking that it was so massive amount of bulbs that it didn't get any air flow. Only time will tell if I can safely save her.
+Richard Lewis OH MY GOSH!!! I AM SO SORRY TO HEAR THAT! Yea that is what I am guessing is that somehow it developed some sort of infection! I am so hoping that it can recover from the ordeal. I would make sure to get rid of any dead or blackened parts of it...and continue to treat and care for it. It can be a fairly slow process to start it up from division, so it may take a while before you see some new growths, but don't give up. Wishing you the best of luck and sending you positive vibes!
Thank you and these orchids are one of the hardiest orchids I have ever seen!! I even kept them out during the winter (Florida) and they didn't even flinch!!! Good luck with yours and hoping that your propagation project is successful! :)
Congratulations! ...and because they do appreciate good watering they should do well for you!! ENJOY and I can't wait for them to bloom for you...I think you'll be amazed! HAPPY GROWING!
Maria, I've never had a coconut orchid. I didn't realize they looked like that. How have they done since the repot? Love that basket and the way it looks after the repot.
Susan's prairie orchids Yes they have quite an amazing and interesting growth structure...My maxillaria is doing quite well and I have featured her on several of my videos...she came into bloom giving me some pretty awesome and fragrant blooms...now she is growing all of her new growths and is looking quite pretty...this is the last update that I did of her.... ruclips.net/video/no_sojXJMAU/видео.html
Florence Kalma Well sweetie you are in luck...I did an update on her a couple of months back...here's the link... ruclips.net/video/uDzqw7zpoxg/видео.html
+Duc Nguyen Thank you...he is alive and well and I am proud to announce that every cutting that I did produced a new growth!!! WHEEEEWWWWWW... I was so worried that I would lose some...especiallly when they started shriveling up...but Maxillaria's are survivors!!! ...and thank goodness they are!
Hi Maria! Greeting from Cape Coral! I have a coco that I picked up at a flea market. His (yes, I named him Max...LOL) have shriveled up, and I am wondering if my potting media is too wet? It feels very moist all the time. It doesn't seem to be otherwise effected. The potting media seems to be mostly sphagnum. I have another I puchased from Redlands last month, and it seems fine. For safety sake, I have it set away from my collection. Any advice?
I am so sorry I am getting back to you so late...I am hoping that it is doing a lot better now...usually when you notice shrivled bulbs it is indicating that the plant is not getting enough water...whether it be because water was withheld from the plant for quite a long time...or perhaps the actual root system is damaged (usually from rot). So the first thing you have to do is find out what has caused it to shrivel up...after you find out the issue then you can figure out a method for treatment. This type of orchid is a very hardy grower and one of the most resilient orchids that I know of...so I am hoping that it did bounce back for you. Please let me know what transpired. Hoping all is well in Cape Coral...and HAPPY GROWING!
I have a couple of coconut orchids that I received as gifts in my yard here in Florida. They're my easiest orchids to care for. They require more light than most popular orchids and enjoy being kept moist . I don't really love the look of the flowers or the plant for that matter but the fragrance is nice
Hi Maria, my name is Sylvia & I first want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your video! I am fairly new to the world of orchids & so I'm learning as I go here. I have about 9 phalaenopsis & I've grown quite comfortable with them & how to care or them....but I just received my first Coconut Maxillaria Tenuifolia through the mail. I arrive today in a very small standard type plastic pot, loosely filled with spagnum moss. The moss & the roots were completely bone dry, they looked no where near as healthy as the ones in your video! I am naturally worried that it might not make it! I will follow your instructions in this video & pray that I can save this poor plant. Do you think that, when I repot it into a more permanent pot, that I should remove all of the dried up roots? Absolutely none of them look viable! Maria, any tips further tips that you may be able to offer would be so greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much & I will be looking forward to seeing more of your tutorials in the future! Love, Sylvia ❤💞
Thank you so much for joining me on my orchid adventures so glad to have you. The good news about this type of maxillaria is that it is one of the strongest orchids that I know with a tremendous ability to bounce back...as showing in the video there are several roots that are protected within the inner part of the sheath within the stem area...so they have some back up power not only in their pseudo bulbs but also in their hidden root system. My maxillaria has went to pseudo bulbs being paper thin to now being a happy healthy plant that is triple it's size of when I repotted it. About cutting back the root system...yes I would cut some of them back...but I would also leave some so that it will act somewhat of an anchor and help the plant with stability in the pot. The key right now would be to hydrate it...I used the same method on these as I did with my rescue vandas and encyclias....and is what I call the deep hydration method...and it really helps the plant to plump back up. I will find the video and post the link. I am wishing you the best and I am keeping my fingers crossed in your rescue mission. Please keep me posted on how it goes.
just killed my 5th the above, always die off tried moss, bark, seedlings. adult, hydro, and mounted sun. shadow, cattlea lite all dry back again and again john
