Thank you for your "cursory" analysis of Crook's motive. I believe that you were spot on in your analysis and conclusion. I've seen so many cases like this both in the media and personally. Crooks was intelligent, lacked a direction in life, had many regrets about his past memories, and was perhaps worried about possible humiliation if he attended college. He makes for the perfect assassin with a motivational Nexxus that wasn't limited to party affiliation as much as it was to make himself known.

I think the place to find the "best evidence" of how Crooks was truly feeling (whether we need it or not) is finding out what kind of online gaming he did. Guys like this who have few if any friends in real life can find additional friends online through their games. They are able to forge a new, better identity, not to mention a sense of anonymity. In-game chat logs or even discord messages to his online gaming friends might uncover how he was truly feeling in the months leading up to the event. Those friends would likely be the people with whom he was most honest.

That is EXACTLY the conclusion I came to. He was rejected by society, depressed, and decided he was going to go out in a blaze of Glory.
He was going to show them all, not only that he mattered, but he was a good shot.
He also wanted to punish people, i agree it could be his parents, also everyone who rejected him. I also agree he probably never had a girlfriend, and that was weighing heavily on him. Nobody wants to go to university as a virgin.
Occam's Razor suggests it is exactly that. Trump was an opportunity that showed up. I've been saying everywhere, i don't think this was a political hit. But that is really hard for people to accept, because it's the first thing your mind goes to.

Never went to any of my proms no boyfriends in high school or college but I ended up having several professional jobs and owning my own business for 25 years. Married now for 34 years with 2 beautiful boys a step daughter and 9 grandkids. We don’t all go down the dark path. Excellent analysis Nick. Stopped too soon! This kid did seem to be in the middle of an identity crises. He was gifted at math & science and seemingly easily got his undergrad with an emphasis on engineering. Nerdy stuff (to him maybe). And probably the reason he got bullied. But we look at the picture the Secret Service took the day of the attempted assassination, he looks anything but nerdy. Hair longer, lighter…he’d probably been at the gun range outdoors rather than inside on the computer. I think this part of his identity was very important to him. When he didn’t make or was kicked off the Rifle team I think that was a very wounding experience. To make it worse, the rifle instructor and/or his peers called the shot “dangerous” as it was off a couple of feet (as opposed to inches. To a marksman/shooting enthusiast, that’s probably the worst word you could use to describe a bad shot. Because that becomes “he’s dangerous” (with a rifle). Anyway, I agree with your take on his personality and struggles. My father grew up in Bethel Park. My mom not far from it. I was born near Bethel Park and my aunt & first cousins still live in Beaver Falls, PA, very closeby. All in Allegheny County (pronounced perfectly! ) Western Pennsylvania is home to some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. I grew up 6 hours away near Philadelphia, PA. The people in Philly are suspicious, tough & aloof. Again, this being Pittsburgh it’s a shock. My sympathy for Mr. Comperatore, the 2 men whose organs were ripped apart, to Donald Trump and his family. Stay blessed! Lisa

We are getting 'info' from youngsters who attended his school. It’s most likely the case that they didn’t know him, as he was brainy, and they were not in the same teaching groups. He was not sporty and unlikely to stand out. Therefore they ‘invented' a profile for him, as a person who was bullied. The teachers should be believed here. Clever, quiet, belonged to a similar group, never made waves, geeky. Millions of young people are like this, but they don’t attempt to assassinate a famous person.

Nick, I think you are very nearly correct. Certainly closer to correct than most news sources. I also agree that news sources are afraid to talk about the real issues that cause people to choose this type of violence.
My only disagreement is with your assessment of why Crooks was researching the Crumbly case. I believe his purpose for doing so was to examine the fallout Crumbly’s crime had on his parents; ultimately deciding to go forward with his own crime thinking perhaps his age mitigated the fallout.
What are your thoughts on Crooks’ motives behind his appearing to have registered as one political party, yet donated money to the opposite party? Could it be his internal struggle manifesting in this way?
I also found the condition of the Crooks family home to be an interesting intersection with the LISK suspect’s home.
    FYI:
According to a 2018 FBI report on mass shooters, most mass shooters have an unresolved grievance and are very vocal about it, but stop vocalising their discontent weeks/months before the crime and begin their preparations for the crime. Then, these criminals resume voicing their grievances immediately before taking action.
I suspect Crooks’ grievances were aired in the INCEL way…within the gaming world.

Also interestingly, a grievance killer went after the king of grievance politics...

The profile picture you have shows he had a significant overbite. I see that he's wearing braces in some photos, but I'm surprised a middle to upper class family did not address something so noticeable. His choices of college seem a little modest considering his aptitude for science and math, which I would think would make him a student big name colleges would be interested in.

Yes. It makes sense. The motives were complex weren't they. A multitude of things perhaps - having little agency, wanting more, afraid to get it in more normal ways, being influenced by the media, thinking a gun would solve his problems, a loner an outsider an outcast, going out in a blaze of glory. Looking at a picture of his face I almost saw Brandon Scott Hole.

I like the “social death” theory. I heard it for the first time when you were analysing Lucy Letby. It fits with the “hurt people hurt people” belief that is so strong in the Anglosphere. While it is always meant as a way of helping to understand interpersonal conflict, it also almost gives people permission to act on violent impulses. Almost. As for the motive in choosing Trump, I doubt he would have shot just anyone of high status. I suspect he was researching security for heads of state, so I don’t think it was just dumb luck that he got so close to killing Trump. As for his choice, who is the most successful bully in America? There has been a build up of this tension between conservative, conformist “Christian” small town USA and everyone they see as different for decades, and everyone thinks the other side started it. I would be profoundly surprised if US society can climb back down from this level of hostility now. Both sides are mentally in their bunkers and not budging. This is a very dangerous moment in history.

    • @SigMaQuint

YES.. with the recent bullying climate, some lonely guy might easily go off the edge, especially when the target is a super-bully himself. That choice may have been emotional, less than conscious, rather than political. Trump’s bullying ways have been a concern to many. But he was also a HIGH profile figure passing close by. As he himself was LOW profile. Many things seem to add up.

    • @judymurray191

I tend to agree with the “Trump as the biggest bully” aspect. And the fact that his family had Trump signs in their yard at one time could have triggered him that his family would support such a bully. This choice might be a way to stick it to his parents, also.

    • @user-sr1kc6jj2b-p1q
      @user-sr1kc6jj2b-p1q 3 месяца назад

@@judymurray191Oh they had Trump posters?! And they are counsellors as well. I wonder what sort of “counsellors” would support Trump. AFAIK you don’t have to have any official professional accreditation to call yourself a counsellor in the US. It’s not like being a psychiatrist. This makes sense of why he was registered as a Republican - his family probably got him to do that, while his own beliefs lead him to donate to a left wing cause. Maybe there were heated family arguments over Trump at home. Maybe he blamed Trump for his family’s discord.
I notice that people tend to get confused by ambivalence when it comes to analysing events like this, but the experience of ambivalence can be just as painful as hate. Sometimes more so. No one can hurt us as deeply as our family and that’s because we love them.

Well thought out and presented, and I believe SPOT ON - you spoke of all the different (and possible) nuances in his life that would give him motive. It wasn't the type of motive that the general public or news media was necessarily looking for - nothing grandiose - but in fact, the more subtle pieces that make up the whole of who he was and why it could have led him to do what he did. Often times, less is more - I hope that your analysis gets the recognition that it deserves.

This is a case of corporate incompetence. The Secret Service is ultimately responsible for the whole event. However, physically, they were only responsible for the venue and inside. They did not have the budget or manpower to cover both inside and out. The local authorities were supposed to secure the outside perimeter. They said ahead of time they did not have the manpower or the budget to secure the whole area, including those buildings, once they covered traffic. This was proven because a few cops were following him, but could not keep him from getting on the roof. I believe Crooks climbed right into the gap of budget restraints. Why wasn’t someone on that roof to secure it? Because no one wanted to pay for it.

The singular most important detail he graduated from "Community College of Allegheny, or CCAC, from 2021 to 2024 and graduated with an associate degree in engineering science." This is not the portrait of someone who considers themselves humiliated or internalized humiliation to the point of desperate psychotic action. Crooks had just accomplished something big in getting an AA in Engineering. Engineering is very hard field of study and also is one of the fields with highest pay in USA. As for his being 'weird' in school...Well, he isn't very handsome and he was smart...2 routes to ostracism. However his weirdness may have been his intelligence and his intelligence may have made him not care so very much about his ostracism, if such ostracism is factual and not mythical.

Also I agree that living with no friends and being bullied is a sad and unhappy life and would tend to lead to more negative and unhelpful behaviours. However I think that the types of people you mentioned were most likely also born with issues, as in maybe they are wired differently and or have mental or phycological problems and the bullying alone is not the sole cause of their behaviour. They are picked on because they are different, IMO.

One could easily attribute the same pathology to a Catholic extremist attempting taking the life of a Protestant figure head. I use that to provide a vast expanse in the difference of ideological difference, geography, politic, and time frame. The question is what emboldens such a pathology to make a decision that is contrary to the natural and normative instinct for self preservation...as it is undertaken with an assumption that they will be held to account.
