I went with the LX 10 after sitting for so long on the fence waiting for the G7X m3 or the RX 100 V or this LX 10. This is to replace my aging S95 from 2011. I went with the LX10 because the lack of a touch screen on the Sony is unacceptable fro me after 4 iterations of it and i'm not buying any small compact at $1000. I also have 70D &100D with several lenses. All 3 cameras 1'' sensor camera are probably great. But all of these are toast when you approach the water or get into the water. So the the savings from instead going with the Sony, I got the GoPro 6 to replace my olympus TG839 from 2014. Now game on!
great video Justin! I can always trust you for these types of camera and tech videos! I bought my g7 after seeing your review I love Panasonic and Sony cameras and they are killing the video game! this camera is really good !
Hi Justin - Great video - I love my LX10 which I purchased the other day - I've been checking out the settings - this camera on 1080 with Stabilisation and Leveling off is a 25mm f1.5 lens - with Stabilisation on and Leveling off is 27mm and then both turned on is 30mm - If you use A Aperture mode you can lock down your shutter speed by using the 'Reduce Flicker' setting i.e. 60fps you can set to 1/120 shutter - in this mode you can select Auto ISO or Intelligent ISO or lock down your ISO as well - You can also extend the ISO from 125 down to 100 or 80 - which helps with bright daylight as the camera doesn't have an ND filter - Fiddling around with the focus and getting some great results especially with the 179 degree thing and some tweaking - Keep up the great videos - don't write off the LX10 its still a great camera
So many great tips in here! I'm going to borrow one again and try it! I'd be fine without levelling, but I would like stabilization. Nice to know you get a few mm back that way! Also want to try the 179 degree hack on it - didn't know you could do it on the LX10!
Justin Reves I got a bit excited prematurely as when I checked what was going on using the remote app on the iPhone it would appear that using flicker decrease in A mode simply turns it into S mode shutter priority as the aperture adjusts automatically also the extended ISO appears only to work in photo mode - pity we cant hack this camera -
Sup dude! Love your video! You are actually the reason I switched to the g85 over my canon (best decision ever) My question is what lens setup do you recommend to get the blurry bokeh effect for vlogging? wide angle?
I have a g7 and recently picked up the sony rx100 v. The autofocus is amazing in the sony. Also, the mic in the sony is quite a bit better than the samples from the lx10 that I have heard.
Yeah, the RX100 V has got the whole package. You pay for it, though! But it's nice. This one lets in 2/3rds more light at the widest setting, though, which is nothing to laugh at, but I really like the focus in the Sony. I watched a video of the mics side by side in a few different situations. They're both small compact camera onboard mics. Neither is great but they both work. amazing what they can do in such small cameras!
Although, if you want it for video I'd probably recommend upgrading to the Sony ZV-1 - it just has way more features that are better for video now and not a ton more.
Point and shoot cameras are amazing. especially when they have such good sensors and Aperture. Vlogging with Nikon D5500 is a huge pain. You can see my frustration in my last vlog. I switched to iphone midway :D haha
Yeah, pretty awesome. Nikon has a new compact with a 15-50mm equivalent lens and I think that would be unreal for vlogging. Problem is that I don't like Nikon's focusing system. I love the quality and ease of Panasonic. If they could just drop in a Canon or Sony focusing system, I'd be in HEAVEN.
Thanks for the review. By the way, does it have a a touch-focus-and-shoot feature on the LCD screen? Meaning, no need to press the shutter. Just like in the OMD EM5 of Olympus
Hi Justin. thank you for this review. Ive had this LX10 for sometime now. I just have one question regarding the Exposure lock while recording videos as there is no physical button which says AE lock. I have posted this question also in another video of the LX10. I'm no where a pro and just an enthusiast but Im aware that I have to lock the exposure when shooting otherwise the exposure changes will all over be the place say when I pan from the ocean to the sky. Even my DJI Spark drone has this functionality. What I do always is decide on an aperture, set my shutter speed (2x the frame rate) then lastly adjust the ISO to get my desired exposure ~ essentially Manual mode. Does this mean I've locked my exposure whenever I do this? or am completely lost here? thank you so much.
Could it be that there is a preset turned on? Or, try shooting RAW and seeing if it looks purple in Lightroom to know whether it's the camera or just a setting.
Have you seen any good deals on the G7? I really want to get it for vlogging, but I noticed it shot up in price after Christmas, which of course makes sense. I'm really loving your camera reviews btw!
It's kinda crazy that it's gone back up so much! I thought it would stay around that $500-600USD price point but they're making it tough to decide between it and the G85.
Justin Reves agreed. Could you let us know if you see any places that lower the prices of it again? I'm really wanting it for the vlog of it becomes affordable for me again
I'm using the G85 currently, but I did about 160 vlogs with the G7. For vlogging, the image quality on both of those is fantastic. Tons of examples on this channel. Lots of can depend on your settings, though. I've had a lot of people comment that they loved how my vlogs looked but even though they were using the same camera, they weren't getting the same look. So I made a video showing all my settings.
Yes, I saw some of your vlogs, I am returning to the GF7 now and will upgrade to the GX850/GF9 for size with a stabilized lens like the brand new 12-35 II. I need something compact, I might try the G85 too but I already have a GH4 so it would need to be smaller
As someone who's planning on making a combination of 'sit-down' videos where I want the autofocus to track my face, and cinematic style travel videos (picture shots of trees, plants, sea etc), would you say the focussing system on this would be ok for me or better the sony / canon? didn't really understand your point about the focus!
If you’re planning to make sit-down videos, be sure to get a camera that lets you plugin a mic. Some cameras autofocus and track stuff way better than others. Sony and Canon’s new cameras do this really well. But making cinematic style videos is possible with almost any decent camera. It’s way more about knowing how to work a camera and practicing smooth shots and edits. So your absolute best option is to not delay and just get what you can afford and start shooting!
I sold my rx100 III to get a gx8 but I find it a bit annoying carrying it around for vlogs compared to slipping it in my pocket. I'm torn to switch back to a compact
Ya know, I hadn't actually ever used it on the G7 - now just playing with it on the G85. For me when I was vlogging, I just wanted speed in post so I just ran a custom profile that got me 90% of the way to the colour I wanted and I'd just do one adjustment layer after the fact to bump it a bit more. So I never used it, but now that I have more time, it's pretty cool.
Justin Reves why do you use standard and those custom settings instead of vivid or a custom profile like this: www.supertone.dk/single-post/2015/01/21/GH4-Optimal-Film-Setting-works-in-stills-too ? Can you explain the effects or the intended look you are going for with your settings? Thanks!
Justin Reves does Mega OIS count as "I use image stabilisation in my vlogs"? Because it is quite a weak OIS. But I can wait for 4K when I can get the G85. I thought of that because 1.4 on a 1" sensor is not as shallow depth of field or as good in Low light as a 1.7 on M4/3 sensor or even 2.0 on M4/3 sensor. Also, I forgot if the new GX850 has IBIS or not. If it does then it would be: GX850 + 15mm 1.7 + Wide angle adapter, or LX10?
JJ if you've got the money and don't mind the extra size, a separate kit is always more flexible than these premium compacts. Shallow depth of field means hard to focus though so just be aware of that. I like the G85 because you can add an external mic. That makes a big difference for vlogging.
Love the GH4. Starting to sell both of mine as I am getting ready for the GH5. I bought the G7 for vlogging. Your review definitely helped with making that decision Lol.
I've got this camera the first day came out. I've been vlogging with it every sense and I love it!
That's awesome - glad to hear! Popping over to check out how it's working for you on your channel right now!

This is my next camera

YES! was waiting for this ;)
Saweet.
Great video! Just wondering what's your thoughts on this camera image quality etc on today's standard? Is it still relevant enough to get one?
Yes, it's still a great little camera. And that price point is great for what it is.
Although, if you want it for video I'd probably recommend upgrading to the Sony ZV-1 - it just has way more features that are better for video now and not a ton more.

when ever I'm shooting a photo with this camera it comes out purple
do you know how to get rid of the chromatic abberation?
let me know

I had that camera but returned it. The image quality felt better on my other pana camera the gf7 for vlogging. Now wondering what I should get

Justin Reves awesome thanks for
The advice! Have any videos on good cameras with plugin mic
Options? Or any personal suggestions?
Great video Justin
Thank you!

whitch lighiting you using in this video?
I think it was just a single Aputure AL-528.
Loved the video Justin! Quick question: do you film on Cinelike-D on the G7?
Ya know, I hadn't actually ever used it on the G7 - now just playing with it on the G85. It's just what I picked when I started that I liked the look of. No serious technical reason.
Should I spend on this or the 15mm 1.7 + Panny Wide Angle adapter since I have a GM5 already?
Do you need 4K or image stabilization?

Hey Justin, Was this VLOG shot with your G7? Keep up the awesome job man. I've worked in Regina a couple of times :D
This video was shot with my GH4. That's cool about coming to Regina! Not such a bad place.
Love the GH4. Starting to sell both of mine as I am getting ready for the GH5. I bought the G7 for vlogging. Your review definitely helped with making that decision Lol.
Is there image stabilization with this camera?
There is 5-axis stabilization!
Justin Reves Oh, really? I thought it's only a standard optical one.
Wish Panasonic could correct autofocus in video..other than that ...great camera
If you close a little the lens to make a video, like f2.0 or 2.8, the auto focus could work better? Sorry, I'm a beginner at this.
Yes, "stepping it down" to f/2.8 would make it easier for the camera to focus. Would like to play with it a little more.
Justin Reves Thanks for the answer.
