    This is by far the best review of any compact camera I have seen on RUclips. The reason: your explanations are clear, concise, terse and intelligent. This is an object lesson to most other reviewers who let themselves get in the way of the review, or who do not properly demonstrate what they are talking about. Congratulations - and by the way, it's a great little camera!

      @@MaartenHeilbron Hi. ive noticed in vlogging, even when the camera is set to face detection it does sometimes have trouble locking on and instead focuses on the background behind me. Can you please tell me what settings are best please? For example is face detect better paired with afs, aff, or afc? Thanks in advance.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 года назад +1

      @@TheyCallMeJesse I would suggest manual for blogging, as the distance from camera to you is fairly constant. If you need auto focus use continuous, with a single spot placed on your face. That way when the face detect fails, it defaults to the spot and not the background.

      @@MaartenHeilbron I agree with C. Johnson, I have come back and visited this video a few times in the last 6 months. I purchased this last September and I absolutely love this camera. My other cameras are canon, but when I went looking for a good inexpensive pocket camera I found this "Like New" on a used camera site. What a fantastic review. Love that you START by diving right into what it looks and sounds like rather than spending a lot of time baiting us for the rest of the video or diving right into the technical. At the end of the day, the first thing I want to know is a) does it look good and b) does it sound good. AFTER that, if I'm still interested, I'll want the tech specs, menu dives, etc... which is exactly what you did. If this camera were just a little less expensive, I'd jump on it as a replacement for my amazing Canon S120, but given the quality and features, I suspect it will stay up in that range.

    I’m currently deciding whether to add to my camera collection. I’m enjoying creating photo diaries of my children’s lives. I have a fuji x70. Colours are amazing and so is the picture quality. Focus can be a little iffy. Don’t really want a mirror less camera. So deciding between the LX10/15, LX100 and G7xii. Currently swaying to the LX100 because of the larger sensor. Tough decisions

    A very nicely in depth look. I wonder when manufacturers will start to add mic ports or usb to mic adapters? Especially given how much longer models with that feature can command full price and how much longer they hold their initial value on the resale market, which might sway some buyers as much as the port itself?

    Maarten. Thank you for this review. May I add a perhaps enhanced comment. I was seriously looking at the Ricoh GRIII and have done much research before it has even been released. Let me compare and I will let your followers decide. LX15: 24 - 72 zoom lens, check. 1.4 aperture, check. In built flash, check. Touch screen, check. No heating up of the touch screen, check. Tilting, although not fully articulated screen, check. Longer battery life, check. In camera RAW processing, check. 4K video, check,. Half the price of the GRIII, check. 20MP, who needs 24MP for social? Check. The LX15 is even smaller than the GR III but the GR is slightly slimmer. In body stabilisation, check. I have done pixel peeking with the LX15 as I have it and there is some noise at higher ISO`s. The real test will be image quality but I find it hard to spend £800 when it appears that the LX15 is far superior in many ways. Time will tell. And I look forward to your review of the Ricoh GRIII.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

    Hello Maarten, awesome review as always! this new Panasonic looks fabulous! I'm looking for a replacement for my old rx100m1 and my budget stretches up to the rx100m3 - lx10 price range. I don't shoot video, I'm only a landscape photography guy. I loved the super sharp lens of the original rx100 and I wonder if the new lx10 can beat the m3 in this aspect . Excellent review! Thank you for all the detail! I keep struggling trying to decide between this and the Sony RX100 MV. I saw another review where the camera seems to struggle with the AF, even though it was set on a fixed tripod and the subject wasn't moving around. The image blurs often and it's distracting... I'm wondering if there's any manual setting that will compensate that.

    I was 'sold' until you mentioned that the HDMI out only worked in playback mode.
    My old eyes like to use a larger external monitor for fine focusing macro shots.
    EDIT: I was just reading the manual. It is NOT an industry standard "HDMI" port but rather a Panasonic proprietary "VIERA Link" port that happens to be implemented using a "HDMI" connector. Per the manual ONLY Panasonic "VIERA Link" devices are supported. It 'might' work with something else but unless that is tested/proven to be the case then it should not be listed as an HDMI port.

    Pity you can't use the 4K photo mode with a 10 second timer.
    Seems to me this would be ideal for group photos when you set the timer and run back into the picture ,take the picture and then find someone has blinked, closed their eyes,or had their head down .
    Seems strange ,as this is the most obvious use for this setting.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад +1

      The timer mode does have a three shot feature, but yes, it's unfortunate that the timer can't be used in 4K photo mode. The alternative is, of course, just to start the 4K recording, run into the photo and then when you think you've got enough, return to the camera and turn off.

    Hi Maarten! Thanks a lot for the video, learned a lot. So the last week I have been trying to figure out what camera to get and the competition is between the LX10 and the G7X mark II. Important, I don't care for video features, only stills.
    The reason I would prefer the G7X is the nicer grip in the front and possibly better interface (I see myself as a beginner). The reasons I would go with the LX10, are some things I've read but are difficult for me to confirm, so hopefully you're view can clear this out for me. Some say the LX10 delivers sharper images, also has better and faster AF and is way better in for macro photos. I will mostly shoot outside during hikes, all the advice is welcome, thanks a lot! :) Also, can I shoot in RAW when in Auto mode with both of these camera's?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks for your kind words, they're always appreciated. They are both good choices, and you're stated good reasons for preferring each. I'm surprised to hear that some think the LX10 is better for macro - although it doesn't have a "macro" mode, the G7X-2 has a much closer (5cm) focus distance, which I think gives it the advantage. (I return cameras after the review, so I can't take them out to compare.)

    • @Wouter6431
      @Wouter6431 7 лет назад +1

      Thank you for the quick response Maarten, and yes credit where credit is due, your review is the most detailed on RUclips. And well the LX10 would, if I'm right have a focus distance of 3 cm. But apart from macro, you also feel that the images of the Panasonic are sharper than? If that is the case, I will sacrifice the better grip and DIY something for it :)

      Yeah! I had a hands on I believe it was in november, there was like a post-Photokina experience at a local store, including the LX10. Looks alright, but perhaps the enthusiast would like to get a bit more out of it, so more like the LX100 I have. They've upgraded the FZ1000 with quite the new skill set, wish they did the same for the LX100. Recently purchased the Leica 15mm, pairs up great with the GX80 (at roughly the dimensions of the LX100). Panasonic really has some great options in their arsenal. G80 is lovely too.
      Can I ask you something. You seem like an English native speaker, yet you have quite the Dutch name and a can of Haagse Hopjes sitting right there in the corner. How does that work? :P And do you speak any Dutch at all?

      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад +1

      Every time Panasonic has a media briefing I'm totally blown away. Not everything is quite what it seems, and some ideas are better as ideas than in execution, but in general, they do some truly amazing photo tricks.

    • @shiznuts
      @shiznuts 7 лет назад +1

      Haha, leuk om te horen. ;D
      True that! And can't wait for the GH5 either. Wowzahs! Of course, it's very video-oriented. The E-M1 Mark II on the other hand (also had a hands-on back then) is all about that stills performance. What a speed demon! They're giving us some exciting things in the MFT system! I don't need fullframe performance and it just makes the lenses bigger = bigger system = muchos €uro$. I love where APS-C sits. It's excellent performance and close to the S35 feel and can be used with a focal reducer to get near to fullframe. But I have no use for optical viewfinders when I can have a smaller system and liveview where what you see is what you get and you get those focus and exposure overlays and aids. Sony doesn't really have a very compelling APS-C mirrorless camera. Samsung has quit the scene. EOS-M is sorta a joke. The only one of some meaning would be Fujifilm with the X-T2, but I'm kind of bummed that the screen isn't touch sensitive, doesn't face forwards, the camera lacks in-body image stabilization and the mount is less supported compared to E-mount and MFT, plus, no smart adapters for adapting e.g. Canon lenses. So... Panasonic & Olympus are doing a great job with offering feature rich cameras in different body styles with tremendous value. Performance takes a tiny hit, but you do get a reliable fantastic and compact system in return.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад

      I am on the list for a GH5 review. Soon I hope. I have no specific MFT complaints, but do prefer (the idea anyway) of APS-C. I'm loving the X-T2, (with the XF16-55 - big, but lovely) and I haven't been able to bring myself to finish the review. (This is what happens when a camera doesn't need to be returned quickly, it loses some deadline pressure). I'd preferred Sony for video use, but the X-T2 is my current production video camera. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Tot ziens.

      At the moment I have the Sony RX-100 I. Until now it did quite a good job for me. But I want a camera that can record in 4k, so I'm considering one of those mentioned. I guess the GX850 might be the best camera, but always carrying the lenses is a killer for me. At my travels I was was used to take the camera in my pants pocket which made me pretty fast in preparation of taking videos and photos.
      So the question should be: which camera in compact camera size would you recommend?
      I would tend to the LX 100 because of the big four thirds sensor but i don't like the accessory flash which you have to install first.

    I want to upgrade from iPhone to learn about photography to shoot manual, I like the aperture ring on this camera but not sure if this is a great camera for that purpose, was plan to get XE3 with 16-55mm F2.8 but the best camera is the one with you, so I guess this is a great camera for that purpose too since its small, has aperture ring and should be great quality and has zoom lens, right?
    How about the 24mm wide in FF term, is it really as wide as 24mm on FF? Shoot indoor tight space, architecture and landscape is no problem?

      Nearly all cameras are great for the purpose if you've been shooting with an iPhone (not that there's anything wrong with that). It's not usually a problem - but do consider the 16mm if you're worried.

      Maarten Heilbron ok I see, so is better to get that XE3 than Limix LX10 for this purpose?
      How about Leica XY rumor, do you heard about this?

      Both are fine. There's a wider selection of micro four thirds mount lenses, but I feel that for the most part, Fuji lenses are of higher quality.

    Does RX100 V has stop motion function?
    Is LX10 possible to have HEVC video file format support?

      Depends on your needs, I prefer having a viewfinder, but Panasonic's feature set and longer 4K recording times ...

    Should I buy this camera or the Canon g5x? The EVF and the handling of the Canon seems pretty good. Also it zooms up to 100mm

      I have not used the G5x, but it seems like a good choice, particularly if that 100x zoom is appealing to you.

    Great review. Does this come with an instruction manual?

      Thank you for your kind words, appreciated. You can download the manual from Panasonic's web site. In fact, I recommend you do this before purchasing. It's amazing how much good information and insight is in the manual.

    Thanks for the great video, I'm thinking of getting this as an upgrade from my Lumix TZ35. One feature I like on the TZ35 is the ability to take photos while recording a video, it is limited to 2 pictures on my camera, but its a nice feature, does the LX15 have the same option?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  7 лет назад +1

      I appreciate your kind words. Up to 30 images can recorded, but they are 2MP and 16x9.

      Thanks for your quick reply. I might get this camera. it's mostly for travel so has to fit in the pocket, and would like to have good low light images. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Maarten! Thank you so much for producing this great, informative and instructional video. I just bought the LX10 in 2019 for a dive trip. This little camera gets amazing reviews by the dive community. But they are not good about sharing their knowledge for settings or camera features and how to use them inside an underwater enclosure. So, I am reaching out to you hoping you can help me with a couple of questions.
    1) Long around 7:51 minutes into your video, you are talking about the great focus features of this camera. Being able to move the focus area around on the screen is of particular interest to me. But I cannot find how to do that without using the touch screen. Obviously the touch screen will not be available to me underwater. Can you advise me on how to do this with buttons, the menu, or the controller?
    2) I would like to figure how to set the camera up with back button focusing like is on my Canon 5D M3. Is this possible? It would be fantastic to be able to move the focus area to exactly where I want it, and then to be able to have the camera focus before pushing the shutter. The small creatures, and fish obviously move around a lot!
    Basically, I would like the ability to focus, recompose and shoot. But I can't figure how to manage it on this little camera. Again, can you advise me? Thank you so much in advance. Yours have been hands down the best video instruction I've found.

    Hello, if I can ask, which one would you prefer, Canon G7X Mark II or Panasonic LX10? I have never recorded a video with my camera, so Canon should be a better option in my opinion, since it has better zoom for all around camera, but this 4k Photo futures seems to be really interesting. I'm also thinking about GX850, but I has no image stabilization and lenses with IS are really expensive. I found Olympus E-PL7 but I seems to me to be too big for everyday camera. Which one would you choose please?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      Olympus EPL9 too big? And I think you may be putting too high a value on image stabilization. I would not dismiss the GX850 on that count. Honestly, I'm not sure which one I'd pick from the G7X II or the LX10 - both have their good points and deficiencies. Make the choice based either on features or otherwise go with the one that feels better in your hand or that you like the look of best.

      @MaximusTrolejbus 6 лет назад

      I meant too big to have it in the pocket (of trousers) seems to more like a "around" the neck camera. Thank you for opinion, I will consider your points.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 лет назад

      I would treat all of these as wrist-strap cameras. I'm not sure I have big enough pockets for any of them.
