  • I finally have a POISONOUS pet (not venomous lol)
In this video we prepare my aquarium for freshwater pea pufferfish
Pufferfish have peaked my interest for a very long time. Between the interesting Japanese dish that kills consumers if prepared wrong, and watching male pufferfish make elaborate, artistic structures to attract females, their intelligence and entire existence has always interested me.
I am so happy I finally have the opportunity to keep a few pea pufferfish.

Back in high school, a couple of friends and I started a tropical fish store in what used to be my garage. We didn't make a lot of money, but it was a good experience. Care for fish must not have been very advanced in the 70s, we only worried about pH in those days. Ammonia levels? I wonder if they live significantly longer lives now. Anyway, because of that early experience, I found this video to be interesting and fun.

When people cringe when I tell them I have tarantulas, I explain that I play with them the way I'd play with fish. I don't.
Tarantulas are the best! OK, my 7 cats and 2 dogs are pretty OK, too. 😜🤣🤗

Haha you sure are right. We have fish at my job in the lunchroom, i play with them since i am always the first one even talking to them. But my Bird eaters (18) they are the real thing. But like 95% of the people in my country are scared of them... eventhough we don't have poisened ones. Yeah since i like stuff the most when others don't, i just love spiders. Hoping my P. Regalis is laying some eggs soon. On topic, you are so right with every word you just responded.👍🏼
On topic of the video, i ones cleaned a aquarium of people who kept me in their house for a while.. they had fish and when they baught new fish, they kept the bag with the new fish in the water of their new envoirement to get used of the temperature and all. I don't see her doing this 🤫 might be wrong, since she speeded up the vid.

You have a male and a female. Aquarium is perfect, I would just recommend that you add a large patch of java moss. They use it to spawn their eggs into it. Mine breed once a year during summertime, when water temperatures rise. They need to fatten up, yours are currently a bit on the skinny side, although not dangerously so. You can train them to eat from tweezers within two weeks or so. Start offering them small amounts of bloodworms that you drop from tweezers, and once they associate the tweezers with food, they will start picking bloodworms directly from it. Then add really tiny pieces of raw frozen shrimp into the mix and they will quickly learn to eat that too. They also like to eat small white dwarf isopods, maybe you already have those in some of your terrariums.
Puffers tend to sometimes suffer from worm infections. If yours lose their appetite at some point, treat them against nematodes. Have fun with your new friends!
Oh, and the Pleco definitely needs some wood in the aquarium. They eat small parts of it which aids their digestion.

I kept a 29 high tank with a cherrywood frame & stand with white sand kissing gourmets and when I bought them they were about the size of a quarter or gold dollar and when I found someone who loved fish to take them to his home tank and all because my new apartment excepted my 2 100lbs dog but not a fish tank over 15 gallons and at that time I had just upgraded to a 55 gal long and I decorated it according to the holidays gravel and all and kept hologram wrapping paper on the back of the tank. He also took my dinosaur of a algae eater named Atlas lol
I taught that fish to eat from my hand❤️
His new owner fed him brined shrimp 🍤
Spoiled fish I tell ya! I cried after I packed them in his car! It was winter time and he had totes with heated water and moving blankets to get them home so I knew they were in GR8 hands and I visited and saw him eating shrimp❤️
They definitely have connections with their keepers‼️
    No question there‼️❤️

From my experience with puffers their hit and miss and can suddenly turn. I have seen a bristlenose pleco that has been bitten in half by a mbu puffer, their beak is extremely sharp. I personally wouldn't keep with bottom dwellers, I have seen pea puffers nip the fins totally off Corydoras and I have seen other puffers do harm. Their extremely curious and will bite it if curious.
The tetrodotoxin in the pufferfish is not obtained from their diet, many have extremely different diets and do not focus on venomous species, quite a few specialise on a diet of just fish while others are on invertebrates. They don't eat algaes and it would not grow in their gut due to lack of light in the gut, gut flora is another thing.
I wouldn't personally feed any fish bloodworm, the bacteria in the gut can be an irritant as can the hairs on the actual larvae, it is difficult for most fish to digest and many fish can become addicted to it and refuse to feed on anything else. I had a mbu puffer that i had to wean off bloodworm and it easily cost over £100 from feeding live river shrimp for a few months and then slowly tempting him to mussel, prawns and other more nutritious frozen food. Instead tubiflex, brine shrimp, daphina, cyclops etc. would be a much better mix, I have had a few puffers feed on dry food specifically the South American pufferfish. But their extremely messy fish and although hardy do take a lot of work in water changes.

A followup. You ought to consider cichlids - maybe an Oscar. Did you know they can live 10-20 years? They are kind of the old worlds of the tropical fish world. That should attract you like a moth to flame! I never owned one, but one of my buddies did. Their behaviors were more interesting than most other fish. Taking particular care of their eggs, territorial behaviors. The personality of a T in a fishes body. Just something to consider.

Nice Kat, I loved aquariums since I was a young kid. Did fresh water fish and turtles. Young adult I even got into saltwater fish with clown fish and hippo tangs yes before finding Nemo lol. And 1998 in Quebec Canada we had a horrible ice storm that took out the power for weeks. I lost my 55 gallon SW with live rock about 3500$ back then. Lost interest in that hobby for the reason of vulnerability and cost. Still have the interest when at the pet store to look at fish but my main hobby now is my t's (slings and juveniles) about 20 of them. Nice colors, easy to feed and not hard to leave them for a week or two without worrying about them passing. Love your fish and a nice setup Kat 👍 and if I recall right the puffers that are extremely poisonous are the saltwater verities and the freshwater/brackish are low to no poison. Hmm...fugu fish, I wish I was back in Japan. Best business trip ever. But... I guess keeping one "alive" could be quite interesting. Btw, you are right about diet making them poisonous. Fugu fish raised by humans for restaurants are not poisonous. Even the most poisonous part, liver, is safe to eat. :D

I heard that! But I also saw that some specifically want the wild one still lol. I don’t know if I could do that. But at the same time, if it was my culture I’m sure I would at least try it lol

@@tarantulakat fish is delicious. So it is good that they breed them on their own and not destroy slowly population, like in case of eel and tuna. But it is true that some want to feel some risk while eating the ones caught in the wild. The cooks need special exams to be allowed to prepare this fish and the restaurants have a special container to keep remains locked. They say that talented cooks can leave the small amount of poison to entertain the guests... well, my boss took me to the restaurant with a non-poisonous version. No fools in my group!
Still, many people die yearly because of mistakes and people who cook this fish without a license.

there's a part of p puffer fish that is poisonous. one of my friend eat p puffer fish in front of me and he only get rid of that poisonous part and then its good to go. he says you can cook it anyway you want as long as you take that poisonous part away but the problem is that, some way of cooking as we usually do with normal fish doesnt fit on p puffer fish's flesh. i mean you can still eat it but it does not taste as good as the other recipe. thats what he says.

Cool puffers. Do these need a bit of salt?
When my tetras all pass away to old age, I wil maybe get a medium sized puffer.
Fish tanks are just a lot of work compared to T's and scores, so I have been going away from fish personally.

Pea puffers are complete freshwater species of pufferfish. That being said freshwater has salt in it naturally as well its salinity is just much much much lower then salt water. So technically all fish need some amount of salt :)

Okay first of all that’s a Pea puffer. Their minimum tank requirements is 5gallon per puffer. They CAN be aggressive be aggressive towards other fish. If you think keeping fish is “a lot of work” then you should have not got puffers. The best diet for them is a live diet of black worms/blood worms/brine shrimp; which overall means more water changes. You should honestly take them back or rehome them to someone who can properly care for them

My tank is 16 gallons. Where did you get that it’s under 5? Did you even watch the video before commenting? Pufferfish ARe poisonous. I even mentioned in this video how these specific kind (yes I said pea puffers, not sure why you’re confused) are debated to be though although I read reports of fish falling ill after eating them. I said they can be aggressive as well. Just because an animal is a lot of work you should rehome it? I completely disagree with that. I have a lot of animals that can be a handful but I find the reward in caring for them to be worth it. Thanks for commenting
