It's because it makes them more "human", more "familiar". We humans have sense of meaninglessness and purposelessness that is so strong that, in our minds, we constantly search for meaning or puprose. Many of us are constantly in a state of: Fatigue, Purposelessness, Missery and Guilt for all the time that we have "wasted" and are "going to waste". We humans are not perfect, we are greatly flawed but at the same time have limitless potential as a species and seeing a entity just a bit flawed or even more flawed than us but have great potential sparks a sense of "familiarity", of "humanity". We, as a species are flawed yet we have the potential to fix those flaws and seeing a being that that have both of those traits are seen as "humans", as creatures we can relate to and empathise and watching those beings overcome their greatest flaws gives us a sense of hope, happiness and determination in ourselves and others.

I’ve always empathized with Sans a lot. I’ve dealt with depression for years, and I usually wear a grey hoodie and tell riddles and jokes, before I managed to get some help. So when I first saw Sans, I empathized with him. It sucks, but I’m glad I got better. The fact that so many others haven’t... is disheartening.

So in all reality, unless toby says so himself, he could have it, or he could not have it. But there is so much evidence towards him having depression that it is basically cannon(If not, just extremely hinted at much like the Chara Narrator theory)

That at least hints to us that he is feeling some guilt or even futilism, which are symptoms of depression. This also can stand as soild evidence as to why he may have depression as well. He knows that we as players has every influence over his/everyone else's life, giving him a mindset that his choices don't matter in the end. My theory is: pretty much the same as yours, but I added a very minor detail. When you said that Papyrus and Toriel were the "anchors" that held Sans together, it got me thinking. Why didn't he just literally give up on life when they died? When he lost the two things that made him happy? Here's what I think. When Papyrus and Toriel died, Sans might have been driven to the brink of almost literal insanity, causing him to fight you and want to kill you ASAP. It was out of pure vengeance, not because he wanted to stop you from leaving the Underground(okay, maybe that too but mostly the vengeance thing)
And this video was probably the #1 video that hit home the hardest. I've been dealing with some depression myself, but I have my friends to thank for pulling me out of that hole. If any of my friends see this, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Well, if we're going with depression, I think it's that sans becomes suicidal. He wants to kill his brother's murderer a couple of times before dying, himself. He saw u kill everyone else and knows u can kill him too. He hates u, so at the same time he wants to die, he wants u to fail, so he tries trapping u in his endless battle even falling asleep to trap u both, but he gets his wish and dies and still feels glad about it knowing your end isn't going to be what u wanted, u can't kill anything else, just reset and bring all his friends back.

Sans DOES have the ability to change his expression, it happens in the game. In the Genocide run when he's injured. He's not a normal skeleton, but a magical being, so that explains it. He's only smiling to hide his pain.

Does anyone else think that, based on undertale's history of exp, and dt standing for things like execution points, level of violence, and determination, that hp could just stands for hope? king sosig well, I see a flaw in your theory. If HP meant Hope, Papyrus would be almost unkillable. And so would Undyne probably too. And the Player doesn’t gain more Hope by killing everyone, at least they shouldn’t. And Asgore would probably have a lot less HP, and so would Napstablook. The Payer would also be pretty unkillable as their DETERMINATION probably gave them a lot of Hope. At least, that’s what I see. I see that it would work for Sans, but not for everyone else.

Um, he's a skeleton and a smile would be realllllllyyyyyyyy hard to get rid of. During Papyrus' rarely used sad sprite, he still smiles. You just see the sadness in his eyes. I think the sunken hollow eyes is because he's a skeleton, too. Yeah, the pale colour is 'cause he's a skeleton. They aren't actually bags under his eyes, but showing perspective in the face trying to make it 3D. If you look at a picture of Sans and a normal real-life person, they'd have that exact same detail. It's just way easier to notice for Sans because he's "big-boned" and the lines are in black.

This really hits home for me. Before I even saw this video, I related with Sans so much. The laziness, the sleep problems, and the seriousness when needed. Then, after I watched this video, I related even more to him. The depression, the fake smiles, and the certain "anchors" I have to keep me grounded. I am not suicidal though, I hate the thought of death, and I hope it stays that way. I have trouble talking about my feelings, which might end up being my downfall. I'm trying to talk more about them, but it's hard because I don't want people to worry about me, I just want them to be happy. Well, and there's the social anxiety, but I try not to worry about that anymore.

I have a theory about why Sans always appears when you're in Snowdin. This applies to the Genocide and Pacifist ending. He follows you because he might be lonely. Sans DOES has friends, but most of them are scattered everywhere. He doesn't really want to go visit the places his friends are at because he's too lazy and tierd for that. He might also follow you to see that you're not killing/harming anyone. He seems the protective one of the group, but doesn't show it because of him being depressed, lazy, and tierd!
...Sans Is the skeleton version of me. I only suffer from mild Depression, but I'm a full time pessimist. I never get sleep at night, but I do in the day I feel like my life is worthless. No one understands me either, I'm deterministic, and if someone messes with my brother... I will want to murder that person. I act like I'm a happy guy, telling bad puns that are only funny because the are so bad. I have had suicidal thoughts before. I give up on anything in a heart beat. Being Autistic even worsens my life... People annoy me everyday for a reaction I cannot stop from happening. The only reason I keep living and trying is because if I can do something for my one singular friend, or my brother, I will do it, while being as determined as possible (no pun intended). Sorry for the long comment, it just really hits hard.

I think the reason why Sans thinks Papyrus is cool may be because Papyrus is filled with Determination to become a Royal Guardman and to enlighten his life more, which makes Sans think that unlike him, Papyrus is very cheerful and optimistic. I didn't like Sans very much because unlike Undyne, Sans doesn't give his all to stop the Genocide player. He is able to see how many times he beat you and stuff like that yet he doesn't change his attack pattern to make the fight harder, which is why he says "I haven't given my all yet" or something like that. Everytime we die in a battle, we reset by going back to our last save point, which is why the attack pattern of every enemy remains the same. But as for Sans, even though he knows you know his attack pattern, he doesn't change it, which makes me think that he is purely lazy to stop Genocide players. But after watching this, I don't really dislike him now. It makes sense that Sans must have a depression that discourages him to give his all. All that time, I thought he always had a lame excuse for his "laziness" but now I think maybe he has a good reason why he doesn't care much about stopping the Genocide player.
This got me thinking, all this time, his fangirls have been seeing his cool side, so I wonder if they could ever understand or even notice Sans's depression. I can't understand why people (especially girls) love Sans so much. Is it because they could already see his depression or something?
the reason that sans doesn't change his attacks is because so far, they have all worked. sans doesn't stop the genocide path because he believes that nothing matters, and that even if he does something, everything will be reset in the end. the reason i love sans so much (besides to puns) is the fact that he is so relatable, with depression and all.
I don't think Sans really knows what happened in the alternate timelines where he defeats you. All he gets is the details seen on Frisk's face. As for knowing possible outcomes, he did say that he noticed anomalies. Perhaps he could only read the most stand-out outcomes?
In the genocide run we learn that sans studied the multiple timelines. My theory is that Sans and gaster were partners of sorts and something went wrong perhaps sucking gasper into some sort of void of time and space and causeing sans to run away with his baby brother papyrus. The lady in snowden even says that they just showed up one day. This might be why he dosent wanna work either (depression from losing gaster/ not wanting to hurt papyrus by screwing up) Its also why he locks his door to hide the truth from papyrus and why he says he gave up on trying to get back years ago. He wants to go back to his old life with gaster but it can never happen not in undertale 1 at least. It could also be why he has that weird machine and the photo album in his secret room just little relics from his past to keep the memorys alive. seeing all the comments here I realised im not the only one that feels like living is useless, because no matter what we are all going to die, but apparently no one has found a solution to this. the only temporary solution I found is distracting myself from these thoughts but I always find myself sinking in my mind at some point. guess ill never enjoy life anymore

Which shows why everyone should be trying their hardest. John Bonham is dead, but he's still important to any Ledhead (that's me) because he tried his hardest to be the best drummer. It's a shame he died when he was young, and a lot of people remember him because he was important. He gave the drums his all and is considered one of the best drummers in the history of rock. Well, in Undertale, when you die your determination allows you to reset. It is a theory that this reset ends the last timeline, deletes it, and you start in a new one, with new possibilities. So, the world effectively ends for the characters in the timeline you reset. Perhaps this is a metaphor the people you leave behind when you die?

theory: the major characters are the five stages of grief. Flowey is denial, spending the majority of the game, with the exception of when he has complete and total control of everything due to power as an empty, emotionless shell. Undyne is anger, with her extremely aggressive nature. Sans is depression (duh). Papyrus, or perhaps toriel, or even asriel, is acceptance, as reflected by their recognition of their dire situation and determination in spite of it. Finally, Asgore is bargaining, trading souls for a way out.
Not everything has to do with five stages of grief. The characters you mentioned don't even appear in order in the game. You also have 3 different characters for acceptance, which means you're not sure.

They're 5 STAGES, in which they are a series of events that occur in which someone is going through grief. Not having them in order doesn't make any sense how can you go through the 'acceptance' but then start bargaining again after you've accepted it (As an example). I don't believe asgore is not bargaining because he isn't "trading" souls, but instead he is taking them by force in order to complete a goal in which will ultimately lead to monster freedom and all that. How is flowey denial? You didn't really explain much accept mention when he 'wasn't in the denial state'. And I think only asriel can represent acceptance, papyrus wants to be in the royal guard but since that's completely possible, it's ok to seek to achieve his goal. Toriel just doesn't want the child (yeah I know their real name) to leave the underground and get himself killed by asgore again since she knows that everyone has been killed before from him. Oh god. Going through these comments is depressing. So many people talking about how they're going through depression and how they want to give up and things like that. What's the problem with this world? Can't we all just live happily together in peace? Apparently, that's not an option. Instead, the world decides to screw half of us up the asshole by making our lives horrible.
Sometimes going through struggles in your life makes you stronger and gives you more appreciation towards life. If life was always good then it would seem kind of pointless. When something's hard in your life and you overcome that that then it helps give people a reason to live and enjoy life such as overcoming depression.

It's because it makes them more "human", more "familiar". We humans have sense of meaninglessness and purposelessness that is so strong that, in our minds, we constantly search for meaning or puprose. Many of us are constantly in a state of: Fatigue, Purposelessness, Missery and Guilt for all the time that we have "wasted" and are "going to waste". We humans are not perfect, we are greatly flawed but at the same time have limitless potential as a species and seeing a entity just a bit flawed or even more flawed than us but have great potential sparks a sense of "familiarity", of "humanity". We, as a species are flawed yet we have the potential to fix those flaws and seeing a being that that have both of those traits are seen as "humans", as creatures we can relate to and empathise and watching those beings overcome their greatest flaws gives us a sense of hope, happiness and determination in ourselves and others.

I’ve always empathized with Sans a lot. I’ve dealt with depression for years, and I usually wear a grey hoodie and tell riddles and jokes, before I managed to get some help. So when I first saw Sans, I empathized with him. It sucks, but I’m glad I got better. The fact that so many others haven’t... is disheartening.

So in all reality, unless toby says so himself, he could have it, or he could not have it. But there is so much evidence towards him having depression that it is basically cannon(If not, just extremely hinted at much like the Chara Narrator theory)

This also can stand as soild evidence as to why he may have depression as well. He knows that we as players has every influence over his/everyone else's life, giving him a mindset that his choices don't matter in the end. My theory is: pretty much the same as yours, but I added a very minor detail. When you said that Papyrus and Toriel were the "anchors" that held Sans together, it got me thinking. Why didn't he just literally give up on life when they died? When he lost the two things that made him happy? Here's what I think. When Papyrus and Toriel died, Sans might have been driven to the brink of almost literal insanity, causing him to fight you and want to kill you ASAP. It was out of pure vengeance, not because he wanted to stop you from leaving the Underground(okay, maybe that too but mostly the vengeance thing)
And this video was probably the #1 video that hit home the hardest. I've been dealing with some depression myself, but I have my friends to thank for pulling me out of that hole. If any of my friends see this, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Well, if we're going with depression, I think it's that sans becomes suicidal. He wants to kill his brother's murderer a couple of times before dying, himself. He saw u kill everyone else and knows u can kill him too. He hates u, so at the same time he wants to die, he wants u to fail, so he tries trapping u in his endless battle even falling asleep to trap u both, but he gets his wish and dies and still feels glad about it knowing your end isn't going to be what u wanted, u can't kill anything else, just reset and bring all his friends back.

And the Player doesn’t gain more Hope by killing everyone, at least they shouldn’t. And Asgore would probably have a lot less HP, and so would Napstablook. The Payer would also be pretty unkillable as their DETERMINATION probably gave them a lot of Hope. At least, that’s what I see. I see that it would work for Sans, but not for everyone else.

Um, he's a skeleton and a smile would be realllllllyyyyyyyy hard to get rid of. During Papyrus' rarely used sad sprite, he still smiles. You just see the sadness in his eyes. I think the sunken hollow eyes is because he's a skeleton, too. Yeah, the pale colour is 'cause he's a skeleton. They aren't actually bags under his eyes, but showing perspective in the face trying to make it 3D. If you look at a picture of Sans and a normal real-life person, they'd have that exact same detail. It's just way easier to notice for Sans because he's "big-boned" and the lines are in black.

This really hits home for me. Before I even saw this video, I related with Sans so much. The laziness, the sleep problems, and the seriousness when needed. Then, after I watched this video, I related even more to him. The depression, the fake smiles, and the certain "anchors" I have to keep me grounded. I am not suicidal though, I hate the thought of death, and I hope it stays that way. I have trouble talking about my feelings, which might end up being my downfall. I'm trying to talk more about them, but it's hard because I don't want people to worry about me, I just want them to be happy. Well, and there's the social anxiety, but I try not to worry about that anymore.

I have a theory about why Sans always appears when you're in Snowdin. This applies to the Genocide and Pacifist ending. He follows you because he might be lonely. Sans DOES has friends, but most of them are scattered everywhere. He doesn't really want to go visit the places his friends are at because he's too lazy and tierd for that. He might also follow you to see that you're not killing/harming anyone. He seems the protective one of the group, but doesn't show it because of him being depressed, lazy, and tierd!
He appears in Snowdin because he lives there with his brother

I act like I'm a happy guy, telling bad puns that are only funny because the are so bad. I have had suicidal thoughts before. I give up on anything in a heart beat. Being Autistic even worsens my life... People annoy me everyday for a reaction I cannot stop from happening.
The only reason I keep living and trying is because if I can do something for my one singular friend, or my brother, I will do it, while being as determined as possible (no pun intended).

I think the reason why Sans thinks Papyrus is cool may be because Papyrus is filled with Determination to become a Royal Guardman and to enlighten his life more, which makes Sans think that unlike him, Papyrus is very cheerful and optimistic.
I didn't like Sans very much because unlike Undyne, Sans doesn't give his all to stop the Genocide player. He is able to see how many times he beat you and stuff like that yet he doesn't change his attack pattern to make the fight harder, which is why he says "I haven't given my all yet" or something like that. Everytime we die in a battle, we reset by going back to our last save point, which is why the attack pattern of every enemy remains the same. But as for Sans, even though he knows you know his attack pattern, he doesn't change it, which makes me think that he is purely lazy to stop Genocide players.
But after watching this, I don't really dislike him now. It makes sense that Sans must have a depression that discourages him to give his all. All that time, I thought he always had a lame excuse for his "laziness" but now I think maybe he has a good reason why he doesn't care much about stopping the Genocide player.
This got me thinking, all this time, his fangirls have been seeing his cool side, so I wonder if they could ever understand or even notice Sans's depression. I can't understand why people (especially girls) love Sans so much. Is it because they could already see his depression or something?
the reason that sans doesn't change his attacks is because so far, they have all worked. sans doesn't stop the genocide path because he believes that nothing matters, and that even if he does something, everything will be reset in the end. the reason i love sans so much (besides to puns) is the fact that he is so relatable, with depression and all.
I don't think Sans really knows what happened in the alternate timelines where he defeats you. All he gets is the details seen on Frisk's face. As for knowing possible outcomes, he did say that he noticed anomalies. Perhaps he could only read the most stand-out outcomes?

In the genocide run we learn that sans studied the multiple timelines. My theory is that Sans and gaster were partners of sorts and something went wrong perhaps sucking gasper into some sort of void of time and space and causeing sans to run away with his baby brother papyrus. The lady in snowden even says that they just showed up one day. This might be why he dosent wanna work either (depression from losing gaster/ not wanting to hurt papyrus by screwing up) Its also why he locks his door to hide the truth from papyrus and why he says he gave up on trying to get back years ago. He wants to go back to his old life with gaster but it can never happen not in undertale 1 at least. It could also be why he has that weird machine and the photo album in his secret room just little relics from his past to keep the memorys alive. Would love to hear your guys thoughts on my sans/gaster theory.

Well, in Undertale, when you die your determination allows you to reset. It is a theory that this reset ends the last timeline, deletes it, and you start in a new one, with new possibilities.
So, the world effectively ends for the characters in the timeline you reset. Perhaps this is a metaphor the people you leave behind when you die?

theory: the major characters are the five stages of grief. Flowey is denial, spending the majority of the game, with the exception of when he has complete and total control of everything due to power as an empty, emotionless shell. Undyne is anger, with her extremely aggressive nature. Sans is depression (duh). Papyrus, or perhaps toriel, or even asriel, is acceptance, as reflected by their recognition of their dire situation and determination in spite of it. Finally, Asgore is bargaining, trading souls for a way out.
Not everything has to do with five stages of grief. The characters you mentioned don't even appear in order in the game. You also have 3 different characters for acceptance, which means you're not sure.

They're 5 STAGES, in which they are a series of events that occur in which someone is going through grief. Not having them in order doesn't make any sense how can you go through the 'acceptance' but then start bargaining again after you've accepted it (As an example). I don't believe asgore is not bargaining because he isn't "trading" souls, but instead he is taking them by force in order to complete a goal in which will ultimately lead to monster freedom and all that.
How is flowey denial? You didn't really explain much accept mention when he 'wasn't in the denial state'. And I think only asriel can represent acceptance, papyrus wants to be in the royal guard but since that's completely possible, it's ok to seek to achieve his goal. Toriel just doesn't want the child (yeah I know their real name) to leave the underground and get himself killed by asgore again since she knows that everyone has been killed before from him. What's the problem with this world? Can't we all just live happily together in peace? Apparently, that's not an option.
