here we are: PHASE 2 MARVEL! I personally LOVED this movie, one of my favorites from Marvel so far! I was shocked to hear around that this movie isn't considered that to others as well! What do you think is the reason for that?
Also I am a month ahead on Patreon meaning that "Thor: The Dark World" is up and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" will be posted there later today www.patreon.com/emmereacts

@@samuelchallis3420 My biggest complaint is that the third act is literally just Shane Black doing Lethal Weapon 2 again. A black dude and a white dude running around on a boat with guns, that's how you end a Lethal Weapon movie, not Iron Man lol. Plus Stark spends most of the run time outside of the suit. Yes, the Mandarin fake out was dumb, but so was the Iron Man suit getting hit by the truck, and since when did Stark start making Iron Man Suits out of Paper Mache? They should have called it Tony Stark: Paper Mache Man, cos it sure as hell wasn't Iron Man.

I will admit however, some of the character writing for Tony was really good, but it's hard to enjoy that when everything else going on seems so stupid to me. It's a shame, since Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 and The Long Kiss Goodnight are some of my favorite action movies of all time, so to say I was hyped for this movie is an understatement, but even upon rewatching it several times over the years, I still can't bring myself to actually enjoy it.

Maya was originally supposed to be the main villain. This was changed during production (after the role had already been cast). The actress was not happy that her part had been reduced to one of Aldrich's pawns.

The "barrel of monkeys" scene is the best in the movie, I think, and part of why is it was all done practically. Real people actually fell from the real sky and really grabbed onto each other. It was a team of skydiving stunt performers filming over the course of a few takes. The reality of it makes it the best scene in the movie, even though I do admit I like the two times Pepper got to kick some ass, at the beginning with the suit and at the end with Extremis.

Each of Tony's suits that he had made were designed for specific jobs, as part of his Iron Legion. For example, "Igor" aka Mk. 38 was meant for heavy lifting jobs that were unsuitable for his regular suits, while the Mk. 17 "Heartbreaker" was an Artillery RT suit, with an oversized chest Repulsor to generate much more powerful energy blasts. The one he used in Avengers at the end was the Mk. 7. Look up the Iron Legion if you're interested in what he had designed each one for.

I literally don't care what anyone says. THIS MOVIE RULES! The Mandarin twist is admittedly a bit disappointing, because of how scary he was in those broadcasts, but the movie is intense, high-stakes, and has a great arc for Tony, as well as housing the best Iron Man action in the series.

Agreed. It's interesting that most reactors seem to really like this one. It seems that going into it blind and with minimal to no comic book knowledge seems to improve people's opinions of it.
I think comic fans were too disappointed by the Mandarin twist, especially with how menacing and prominent he was in the trailers/marketing, that they've kind of overlooked all the other things this movie did very well.

    • @officialmonarchmusic
      @officialmonarchmusic Год назад +3

@@nolanrussell6326 The Mandarin twist, in my opinion, was a flaw. Not because of the comics or whatever, (I also think these movies can and should reinvent these stories) but because of how awesome he was in all of the “lessons”. Some of the most engaging villain videos I’ve ever seen. It was ultimately a letdown to get a less scary and far less interesting villain. But that aside, yeah this movie is awesome

The idea behind the free fall from the plane is that Tony can only fly with 4 people which is why he just keeps dropping and basically slows their descent enough that they survive. They did that all for real which is incredible. They built ultra thin parachutes into the clothes and hired a professional skydiving team to do the jumps. I think they practiced for about 2 weeks to figure out how to film it and make it look like everyone is falling while still being safe. Then when they actually filmed they did I think it was around 60-70 dives over a couple of days. I went skydiving once and could never go again.

More importantly, Trevor and Aldrich were impostors who had no affiliation to the Ten Rings whatsoever, but there’s someone out there who’s in charge of the organization - someone you don’t wanna mess with.

If not, they flesh out characters and situations from the movies. Iron Man 3 had a sequel of sorts in the brief One-Shot called "All Hail The King" which is available on Disney+ along with the others. Some of the films you've already seen had One-Shot follow-ups as well. Also, IM3 reminded me, you might want to consider watching TV show "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." which also draws material from this film for their first season. Thanks for the reactions!

Why Tony broke the guy's phone: dude f*ed up and asked the question. Since we're not supposed to be taking extrajudicial revenge on criminals, asking when that will happen lacks moral backing; and he then forces Tony to invite an attack at his home in order to not do that. His recording of this event is destroyed so he can't use it for his story, and Tony covers the few hundred bucks for a new phone. F* that guy.

There is a bunch of other stuff that ties in to the MCU that some people miss:
    1) A series of short films originally bonus features on the Blu-Rays, now on Disney+, called "Marvel One-Shots":
    - "Marvel One-Shot #1: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" - occurs after Phil Coulson leaves during "Iron Man 2", but before he arrives in New Mexico in "Thor"
    - "Marvel one-Shot #2: The Consultant" - occurs while Coulson is in New Mexico during "Thor". Ties into the end of "Iron man 2" and the end of "Incredible Hulk". Watch before Captain America Winter Soldier"
    - "Marvel One-Shot #3: Item 47" - Occurs after "The Avengers". Blueprints scrolling behind the end credits tie into the opening scene of "Avengers 2: Age of Ultron". Introduces Agent Blake played by Titus Welliver, who appears several times in "Agents of Shield" (see below).
    - "Marvel One-Shot #4: Hail To The King" - Occurs after "Iron Man 3". Must Watch before beginning MCU Phase 4. 2x mid-credits scenes with Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer from "Iron Man 2".
    - "Marvel One-Shot #5: Agent Carter" - Occurs in 1946 after "Captain America". Effectively the pilot episode for the series "Agent Carter".
    2) TV series on ABC (owned by Disney) "Agents of SHIELD" begins after "Iron Man 3". Picks up the hunt for EXTREMIS. Very obvious when "Thor 2" and "Captain America 2" fit between episodes.
    3) TV series on ABC (owned by Disney) "Agent Carter" begins after "Agent Carter" One Shot.
    4) "Marvel Street Level Heroes" originally on Netflix, now on Disney+. Set in New York City, beginning after "Avengers". Must watch before "Spiderman No Way Home", or Disney+ series' "Hawkeye" and "She-Hulk". These series' share secondary characters, antagonists, and locations; have cross-over episodes with heroes from other series; and build to an "Avengers"-style team-up. Lots of big-name actors, pay attention to the credits.
    - The order to watch is:
    Daredevil season 1
Jessica Jones season 1 (intruduces Luke cage and Jeri Hogarth)
Daredevil season 2 (introduces Frank Castle and Elektra Natchios)
    Luke Cage season 1
    Iron Fist season 1
    The Defenders team-up mini-series
    The Punisher season 1
    Jessica Jones season2
    Luke Cage season 2
    Iron Fist season 2
    Daredevil season 3
    The Punisher season 2
    Jessica Jones season 3

Hey, Emme! The fanbase was sharply divided over this Iron Man installment for two major deviations from the comics: the Mandarin and AIM. Ben Kingsley was admittedly hilarious as Trevor and the revelation that he's merely a paper tiger facade for Killian was completely unexpected. However, the Mandarin is Tony's nemesis and one of Marvel's great villains. When he was reduced to a laughingstock, it frustrated all the expectations the trailers had built up for a live-action showdown between these major opponents. The other disappointment was that AIM was reduced to a corporation run by Killian when it's supposed to be a major terrorist organization comparable to Hydra but comprised of rogue scientists! The movie also uses PTSD as a substitute for Tony's notorious alcoholism but this deviation nevertheless helps to ground the character and humanize him for audiences. The plot is adapted from the "Extremis" storyline written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Adi Granov which propelled the character into the 21st-century.
The Mandarin is a top-tier Marvel villain who deserves a special note. He was created by Stan Lee in 1964 debuting in issue # 50 of the title that was running Iron Man's adventures at the time called "Tales of Suspense". He goes by many aliases such as Eugene Khan, Zhang Tong and Tem Borijgin but none know his real name. He is the bi-racial product of an aristocratic Chinese family from pre-Communist China who claim descent from Genghis Khan. Orphaned at an early age, he was raised by a bitter dowager aunt whose hate for the Communist regime was exceeded only by her hate for the West! A boy prodigy, she spent every last bit of his fortune training him in science, history and combat until they could no longer pay taxes and were evicted by the government from his ancestral estate. Now a proud young man with a grudge against the world, he explored a hidden valley none dare enter and made a remarkable find: a spaceship with the corpse of a dragon-like pilot from a world called Maklu IV. This find explains the motif of intelligent dragons in Chinese folklore. He spends years mastering the technology which confers upon him longevity and the ten control rings that power the ship. Each ring has a specific function and can be wielded independent of the ship as weapons. He easily seizes the area around the valley which draws in the government whom he intimidates into a detente where they agree to shelter him and turn a blind eye to his machinations so long as he doesn't molest China. He moves his center of operations to the Gobi desert and begins his plans for world conquest. More recently, he has modernized his outfit into a legitimate corporation to advance his nefarious agenda. Perceived as a culturally insensitive "yellow peril" stereotype in collusion with the Chinese government, a true rendering of the character would have prevented distribution of "Iron Man 3" in the lucrative Asian market so the Ten Rings became a logo and the Mandarin himself became a joke. Feige attempted to correct this egregious misrepresentation in the One-Shot "All Hail the King" and the movie "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" but still came up short.
Shane Black, who directed RDJ in the excellent neo-noir "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", handles this entry as if it were more of a techno-thriller than a clash of armored titans like the last two. It's a smart move and a faithful translation of the source material which has Tony out of his armor for most of the film! The relationship with young Harley is amusing and affecting presaging his mentorship of another character later on. The destruction of the Malibu mansion and the human chain skydive rescue are thrilling highlights!
The cast, as always, is excellent headed by Robert Downey, Jr. playing Tony Stark aka Iron Man for the fifth time now accompanied by his regular stable of Don Cheadle as Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes rebranded as Iron Patriot, Gwyneth Paltrow as Virginia 'Pepper' Potts, Jon Favreau as Harold 'Happy' Hogan and Paul Bettany as JARVIS. Paltrow, in particular, gets to perform some amazing action both in and out of some armor! Ty Simpkins as the young Harley Keener, in whose cluttered garage runaway Tony flops, is excellent as an unwitting, pint-sized therapist. Shaun Toub returns for a Yinsen cameo set in 1999. Guy Pearce plays a lean and hungry Aldrich Killian nursing a hateful grudge with a perpetual sneer and running two evil organizations: his company, Advanced Idea Mechanics, which fronts for a mock Ten Rings terrorist cell. Ben Kingsley does a menacing job as the Mandarin and delivers a brilliant comedic turn as sleazy Trevor Slattery. The lovely Rebecca Hall is appropriately tragic as the spurned Maya Hansen. James Badge Dale is savage as the lead Extremis operative Savin. Stephanie Szostak, as another Extremis goon named Brandt, has a vicious throwdown with Tony. William Sadler plays President Ellis, a role he reprises in "Agents of SHIELD", and Miguel Ferrer plays treacherous Vice President Rodriguez. Character actors Spencer Garrett and Dale Dickey have bit parts as a Tennessee sheriff and barfly, respectively. Adam Pally is memorably amusing as a Stark-obsessed cameraman named Gary.
    TRIVIA:
    1. Shane Black sets every movie he directs at Christmastime and "Iron Man 3" is no different.
    EASTER EGGS:
    1. The dragon tattoos on Killian's chest are of the Makluan dragon and Iron Man antagonist Fin Fang Foom!
    2. The red, white and blue armor and Iron Patriot moniker are references to when Spidey villain Norman Osborn wore the suit in command of the Dark Avengers!
    3. The company the accountant hostage worked for, Roxxon, is the Marvel Comics equivalent of Exxon, a multinational petrochemical juggernaut!
    CAMEO:
    1. Stan Lee appears as a gleefully generous judge of the beauty pageant issuing a score of '10'!
    END-CREDIT SCENE:
    1. Tony recounts his adventure to a half-asleep Bruce Banner who protests that his doctorate doesn't qualify him to practice psychiatric therapy before Tony ignores him and goes on an even deeper dive into his childhood! The gag reveals that the entire movie has been a flashback from this session!
The next chronological stop in the MCU is the One-Shot featurette "All Hail the King" in which we catch up with Trevor Slattery in jail. The featurette is found on the "Thor: The Dark World" blu-ray or on DPlus. This is followed by the first seven episodes of Season 1 of "Agents of SHIELD".

Damn bro, all these years in the MCU and I never knew about the "All hail the king". Is it canon in the MCU? Because I've watched a ton of videos about MCU and I've never seen any marvel nerd talk about that in any videos. Is it really important?

@@vithyasagar1054 The first five One-Shots are all canon and are available on DPlus!
"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" should be paired with "Iron Man 2".
"The Consultant" should be paired with "The Incredible Hulk".
"Agent Carter" should be paired with "Captain America: The First Avenger" or can alternatively be seen as a coda to the "Agent Carter" TV series.
"Item 47" should be paired with "Avengers".
"All Hail the King" is the best one and should be paired with "Iron Man 3".
"Team Thor Parts 1 and 2" are just humorous sketches associated with "Captain America: Civil War" and are not canonical.
"Team Darryl" is just another humorous sketch associated with "Thor: Ragnarok" and is not canonical.

This film got bad reviews when it was released mostly due Mandarin was iconic villain and turn Mandarin into comical relief actor... Well, it did cause backlash. Regarding your question about shadows. They are known as Blast Shadows. This were first known to happen in Hiroshima. The nuclear heat blast can imprint victims silhouette on surrounding. When the flash bleaches hard surface, like stone, leaving humans and other bojects shadows inprinted on walls after that.

"Who is that guy, a bodyguard?"
Are you serious?? That's Happy Hogan. He was in the first and second Iron Man as well. Do you not remember him??
And Tony is in his 40's in these movies. It's just that Marvel didn't try to make him look younger in the 1999 flashback, so it can be a little weird to see him look the same in the flashback.

This was a solid intro to Phase 2. I had the same reaction to the people falling from Airforce One. Not a good feeling how to choose or if they will make it. Having Tony have PTSD really makes the Marvel movies stand out. He is flawed and this makes him relatable. For me, Dark World can be skipped except for a few plot points, but Winter Soldier is perhaps in the top 2 or 3 of the entire MCU. :)
