I think you should watch some vintage Showtime at the Apollo. But Anita was debuting in this "film" and so she was afraid of not doing well. Of course she killed it. The audience at the Apollo can be ruthless if the act isn't good. Anyway, I would recommend watching Stephanie Mills at the Apollo doing her "Home" live. That performance is one for the ages.

It is Spike Lee in the video. It’s supposed to be about Harlem’s Apollo Theatre’s reputation for booing performers off the stage if they were anything less than excellent. Totally not from a movie 😂
Spike is an amazing director but he did make some odd choices through the years.
Man this song takes me back to my childhood. My mom used to play Anita all the time. I actually never saw the video for it. Her vocals are just A-1!

Also, kudos to you both for introducing a bona fide Anita Baker fan to a video I had never seen. I knew the song but had never seen the video. In the music reaction space, everyone reacts for 'THE FIRST TIME/FIRST TIME ONLINE! lol' to the same songs. It's cool when people take chances on things that haven't been reacted to death already. At the Apollo there is an amateur night competition. Artists from around the world from singers, dancers, comedians etc compete and are judged by the crowd. If the artist, comedian etc is bad based on volume of boos there would be immediately kicked off. Someone would come with a cane pulling the person off the stage😂 So its making fun of that.

Thank you to your subscriber Kits Pajamas for suggesting Anita Baker and so far these are great suggestions. With that being said, the skit where the first two performers were booed and subsequently shot with the arrow and thrown balled up paper at, is in reference to the Apollo show. The Apollo is a famous theater in New York that a lot of stars got their big break from. The Sandman was a man who workes there and was notorious for humiliating the performers and escorting them off the stage if they had a bad performance. You guys can Google it form more context. Thanks again. Anita is the truth and she is still performing live as of recently and still sounds just as amazing.

The Apollo is famous talent shows. The video is essentially a talent show. Anita is nervous because the previous act was so bad it got booed off the stage. That’s why she started singing so timid.

The video is supposed to be like Apollo theater back in the day. The audience was legendarily brutal and picky. You had to impress them immediately or you would get booed and ushered off the stage in a very embarrassing fashion. Leave it to Spike to make something already bizarre even more bizarre. 😂

Apollo Theater holds so much cultural significance- they were depicting how tough the crowds were. Traditionally any performers that weren’t good were comedically removed off the stage with a hook, broom or other prop. (I think the video is exaggerating that) you had to be great to remain on stage. Also the Director Spike Lee you can see him performing as the comedian at the start of the video and then at the end he walks through the crowd with the socks when Anita walks out the back of the building. It’s satire.
They started booing the first dude before he even opened his mouth. Classic Showtime at the Apollo 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Anita Baker is a Motown Girl and this video was based on the time first time Ella Fitzgerald performed at the Apollo Amateur Night. She was nervous because the Apollo was infamous for booing folks off if you were trash performer. She ended up winning the contest and the rest is history. The first time I went to the Apollo, I said I could never boo anyone or throw $hit on the stage who were a hot AZZ mess...until I saw ppl on the stage knowing good & d@mn well they had no business being on that stage. 😊...The nerve!! 😂 Yeah...The Sandman (guy w/the fake mustache) wasn't no joke. He didn't play. 😅 You have to be good @ the Apollo. You better be scared, especially when howling @ the moon. Sandman will hook you & yank yo azz off the stage. Back then this was how great videos were they were like short movies, then the industry git cheaper and cheaper! That comedian was spike Lee. Spike Lee was making movies during this era back then so he brought it to her video , it's what I can kind of remember!
I feel the cold open was inspired by political/military events of that time. The US might've been involved in some scuffles then. We were more patriotic through our troops around that time or beginning to be.

Guys, it's not that serious! The guy's a comedian... it's an act! You guys always find things Noone else waste a second on. We concentrate on the star...not the Storyline. Obviously you're not familiar with the history of the Apollo Theatre's way of doing things. It's known for having the toughest Audience. And in the beginning if an act wasn't good this guy would come out with this huge cane with a hook on the end and they'd get pulled off the stage! So all they did was exagerate the drama by using the Arrows. You guys could not seem to let that go! It's Comedy! Not that complicated! Please Let it go!!! Now, how was Anita's song? Rewatch the recording and see what we had to suffer through!...
