The TomTom is a lot smoother when turning and going around a roundabout which makes it easier to follow, the garmin is a bit janky and delayed so may put you off a little bit.

Bought a Garmin Drivesmart. Spent the last 4 days getting to know all its ins and outs. 1) The map is slightly less detailed than my Go 510. 2) I can't change the route as easily or to the same extent as my Tomtom. 3) I can see further ahead on the map with the Garmin (the only reason I bought it). 4) Adding and naming favourites is a pain on the Garmin.
In my opinion my Tomtom is much better. Note: as a coach driver my sat nav needs differ slightly from a car drivers'.

  • @vickifrance
    @vickifrance 5 лет назад +8

Both are very good, visually the TomTom is a less confusing map and skips around a lot less. But when the screen splits the Garmin has a better visual. Are the screen sizes the same? If so the Garmin has larger text making it better for older eyes. Hard to say which one is actually better...I think it's even.

I've been using Tomtoms for the last 10 years but it's time to change. My biggest grievance is not being able to see the road ahead because the Next Instruction panel obscured that vital info. Often I can see further through my windscreen than my map shows me.

  • @otway00

I have had Garmin and TomToms over the years and while I found the graphics on the Garmin to be better, the TomTom was easier to use. On one trip, I was using both side by side. Missed a turn and the TomTom recalculated the route. The Garmin wanted me to go back to the first turn I missed even after I got to my destination. Using a Garmin right now because it was a better deal price wise

@Apple Pie It was constant. The wife and joked that we probably gave it a stroke as we would not follow its instructions when it was giving bad directions. It broke so we kept the TomTom until it died a few years later.

Tom tom has an edge. Although there are minor (street name) notification edge observed for Garmin over Tomtom. In Garmin the maps look 70% ready look wise while the Tomtom maps look much more mature and smoother. I do not feel colour plays an advantage in Garmin as in direction arrows indication flow of traffic flow in case of multi lanes in Tomtom wins.
Tomtom can be improved surely, but I found it slightly better than Garmin. Specially the total route display with end time to reach destination gives a very good feel.
Tomtom magnetic mount is surely a plus too.
That's my view and observation only. Both the products are top of their class.

This video was rather important for me because I'm doing a big driving trip in the UK in October, so trying to choose between dedicated GPS, whether a Garmin or TomTom, or stick with Google Maps on my phone. Have decided for various reasons that using my phone is not on, so trying to decide which GPS to buy.
Your videos are good, but please, no music, as I couldn't hear most of the warnings because of the competing audio !
Garmin does an excellent job of the M25 motorway exit and entrances, particularly the image of the road signs

I bought the Garmin 61 and voice command worked. I did the recommended map update and VC was not working after that. 20min on the phone with Garmin and they said it needed to be connected to a computer. Lot of good that does when on a road trip. I returned it when we got home. I also hated the mount. I much preferred the older mount that grabs the bottom and top. No I'm thinking of trying the TomTom for the magnetic mount!

I notice the TomTom is a LOT smoother scrolling, but it also locked up at 2:20. I also noticed Garmin was silent while TomTom was providing all kinds of little directions by voice. Some may like that, but I think it's a bit TOO much detail. The Garmin screen is amazing though. It has LOTS of information and detail, including pictures of upcoming intersections with lane and course details. Pick yer own poison ah guess.

I've watched this video a million times trying to talk myself into keeping the Garmin 61. I LOVE Tomtom (used them for 10 years) but then they went to fractions (next turn in 2 1/2 miles instead of 2.5) and it annoys the crap out of me! (Yea I know it's just a small thing but if Tom Tom went back to the decimal system I'd probably end up going back after some thought)

  • @youaregoingtolovethis
    @youaregoingtolovethis 6 лет назад +1

TomTom less jerky as others have said. Also it's slightly faster with directions and route info and realtime info and distance. His makes all the difference in a real world situation where you only have very little time to change lanes or make a turn and every second count. Making it beng the difference of nice to use or a headache and frustration. I like the Garmin realview of exit signs and bigger screen but the color is awful and makes it look outdated. If the TomTom had a bigger screen and was edge to edge plus have realview that would be the best hands down. To me speed of unit is most important. What the point in good graphics or directions if they're too slow to do any good and you constantly miss your turns and exits.

Garmin's GUI has so much wasted space though. And it reminds me of Windows 98. The maps are also uglier. The main sellings points Garmin has got going is that the display is better, and setting your destination is simpler (with TomTom you *have* to put in a address as well, but with Garmin you only have to put in a place to start planning your route).

TomTom seems to run a lot smoother and looks cleaner. More polished looking. That's one of the reasons i'm upgrading my 1340. Very laggy maps. Was gonna get one of those fast sd cards to see if that improved it but i'm getting this 61 instead. I hoped laggy maps were a thing of the past with these newer ones but it looks like they aren't. Well except for TomTom that is by the looks of it. TomTom must have a better CPU. How smooth the TomTom looks is what i was expecting to get upgrading to this 61. Suppose maybe settings can be tweaked but i'd also expect it to run full detail with no lag by now like the TomTom is.

Although Garmin has lots of extras, unlike Tomtom, it doesn't tell you which direction to go on the roundabout for say, 3rd exit. Mini roundabouts are also no available. It makes life very confusing most of the time! I rather use Waze. Tells you the roundabouts

I agree with you there. However, The Tom Tom has better, wider, and sharper graphics than the garmin. I have a Nuvi 55 Garmin right now. and I loved it only till fairly recently it hasn't been working well because they put up an all new satellite in the sky. So, even though I updated the thing, my icon wont stay on the road map and I get all confused while I'm driving. And that's not fun! It's makingvery mad. So it looks like I'm going to need a brand new GPS.

We had a TomTom that was fine until it changed the voice. No longer can pick one. The new one is awful. It keeps telling you to "keep left" at every off ramp. Doesn't tell you to turn soon enough when you are going over 30mph. The reason we got a new one (Garmin) was it no longer took updates. It's only a couple of years old.

I agree. Mine is only 2 years old and I cannot update it. And everytime I try the unit doesn't switch itself on with Ignition. I have to hold down the on button for 20 seconds and then wait forever for it to relocate. If I go back to factory settings it will switch on. I'm going for the Garmin as I want a 7 inch screen and longer updates. I have seen it for sale for only AUS$240. JD

I saw one difference here that kind of clinches it for me. At :24 on the garmin it shows you much closer to the turn whereas the tomtom still has you way back and nowhere near the turn. I went back to kind of watch the driver and it appears they were turning in relation to the garmin. Suddenly the tomtom bounces forward to sync with the cars actual location. It may seem like a small thing but it's the reason I'm looking for a gps other than the one installed in the car. Living in California with split second interchanges and off ramps nearly overlapping I can't say how many times just a couple seconds and a slight off sync of the GPS had me miss my exit. My wife has nearly ripped the GPS out of the car in furry at how many times it's had us miss our exit or turn because it's back to far. In my father in laws car the in car modern gps has told us "turn right now" while we were literally driving on an over pass.

Both navigations have their advantages and disadvantages. Garmin shows a better perspective ahead of time, much further than Tomtom! Garmin voice commands are more precise and appear much faster. The Garmin Lane Assistant is much more accurate and therefore better for navigating unfamiliar urban terrain. Not to mention the larger Garmin screen (6.9 inches!). I personally use the Garmin SmartDrive LM-T 65 D - where "D" is Digital Trafic, I do not need to connect to the phone as it is in the Garmin SmartDrive "S". And the "D" version has 3D buildings! In Germany, the price of the Garmin Smart Drive LM-T 65 D is around 220 Euro, while the TomTom 6200 is around 260 Euro. Recently, TomTom took me to the streets "against the current" so after 10 years of using TomTom I bought a Garmin and I am satisfied, although Garmin has a problem with updating radars and speed limits, often the information is inconsistent with reality, which is the only MINUS of Garmin for me to so far. - Here Tomtom is an absolute leader. Greetings friends and thank you for the video!

I've just bought the go 5200. I've always been a TomTom user and did consider switching to a Garmin. one thing that really irritates me about the TomTom is there's no information displayed for your next turn until one and a half miles from you turn. what road am I turning on to next which exit am I taking off the motorway this information should be displayed straight away like on the garmin. lots of useful information on the Garmin but doesnt display your arrival time. prefer the maps of the TomTom. thanks for the uploads how about a video of the Garmin in built-up areas.

Marcel Cazan the very new TomToms don't display the street name of your next turn until one and a half miles from that turn the Old units displayed the street name straight away if in 20 miles time the sat nav is taking me off the motorway at Junction 18 I want this information straight away the new TomToms don't display this information until one and a half miles from the exit.

Hi, I dont have any experience driving on HIGHWAY and also never owned a JPS. Now i have to drive on Highway everyday, makes me very nervous, and so i decided to buy a JPS. Now im in between 2 JPS ( Garmin or Tomtom ).
Here i have a question it may sound stupid- would you please guys help me to better understand about the jps: For example,
1/ If my phone doesnt work, no internet connection, while im driving, would JPS still work and show the ROAD or ROUTE ?
2/ In the video, @ 6:01, GARMIN shows 2 left lanes, TOMTOM shows one left lane. which one is right ? So JPS shows which lane we have to drive ?
    Thank you.

So which one is better? I use to have a Garmin back in like 2008 but it would not tell me the total distance of the trip The Garmin support said I had to add up all the distanced to get the total trip distance. I was like Screw that so I threw it away. I see that have fixes that with this current model.

Firstly good video. I like features on both, for me, Tom Tom doesn't feel as cluttered with different colours. I didn't like how long the Tom Tom took to change to 3D and put me off a bit. This made me lean towards the Garmin. Thinking I may just have to get used to the array of different colours on the Garmin. Both good though.

I like the Garmin best, I watched this as about to buy a new sat nav, I have at present a Garmin Nuvi, but fed up of it being so slow to give next direction like when turning off motorway onto ra at end of slip road, I see this one is a huge amount quicker, I had a tom tom but screen was not glass, some sort of plastic it smeared all the time and was hard to see, admittedly that is going ack over 10 years, my present NUVI is doing strange things like putting up POI, even tough keep turning them off!!
