  • Beast mode is back! And in today’s new video we’re featuring one of the funkiest rock bassists ever! Flea has been an integral member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers for over 30 years, but there’s a lot more to Michael Peter Balzary (as nobody calls him, lol) than just slappin’ the bass.
    Flea has given us some stellar performances over the years, and ALWAYS brings the groove-laden funk that sets the Chili Peppers apart from every other rock act out there. In today’s new video we’re going to take a look at the three times that Flea went beast mode!

    I'm 42, so when he was in the hight of his fame for Blood Sugar Sex Magic I was about 15 and he was my number 1 influence to pick up the bass guitar. His aggressive play style mixed with his funky bass lines just resignated with me so much. It was after wanting to be like flea that I grew to admire others like Bootsy Collins, Les Claypool and other great bass artists. But Flea is who started the passion for bass playing for me. He showed me that a bass player doesn't have to be an after thought in the band. That a bass player could be the star 🌟

    • @TheMemo659
      @TheMemo659 3 года назад +1

      Think we all do that a bit with our favorite bass players. I always say I was taught by Harris, Burton, and Butler because I spent my first 3 years figuring out and mastering their groove. End result, I can (and have) successfully bullshit my way through those band's songs Ive never even attempted JUST from knowing how those guys operate.
      I play in original bands but have still picked up quite a cover list over the years. Each new bass player "teaches" me new tricks, but that's a lot different from how much the first three I mentioned put a stamp on my style. That stamp is pretty obvious to people who pay attention to bass (so maybe one person every 3-4 shows :D), and I take it as a compliment when someone approaches me and says "Dude!, You play like XXXXXX!"
      Picking Flea as a bass player to emulate is a solid choice! One tid bit I'll share though (and the point behind my rambling response)..... He is actually who "taught" me slap, and sure enough I'm now locked and stuck with his "incorrect" technique. Flea slaps thumb pointed down with contact point on his thumb knuckle. It works well, and once mastered will give you a VERY loud & bright slap. It will also forever deny you the double thumb technique if you lock into that slap position like I did. Capture his groove and what notes he likes to use for sure, but do your self a favor long term and look to guys like Wooton and Miller for proper hand positioning when you slap.

    He's a league of his own, for sure. The first time I watched him live it was not his bass playing skills that struck the audience though (at least initially)... He did the whole gig dressed in two things and two things only: A pair of shoes and his bass. After jumping around the first song - doing his magic with the strings - he walked up to the mic and mumbled something like: "I was very shy as a kid. Guess this is some kinda therapy for me". Then he wen't on to play like only he does the rest of the gig.
