- Apothecary shops or traditional drug stores existed throughout historic Portsmouth New Hampshire by the 19th century. Just as we visit pharmacies today to source medications and health products, locals here in Portsmouth throughout the 1800s visited apothecary shops to bring home various mineral and plant based mediations for minor and severe ailments.
Join Erik Wochholz, Curator of Historic Landscapes at Strawbery Banke Museum, as he gives a short demonstration of essential oil distillation. As novice and expert practitioners created plant based medications over time in Portsmouth, many of them utilized distillation sets to extract essential oils which were often the foundation of many medicinal recipes. Enjoy a connection to history and current practice as Wochholz explains the process of steam distillation with the museums organic lavender.

The music loop drove me crazy at 3:49. Thank god for close captioning. A good video. Thanks.
Yup, I gave up watching 🤦♀️
Next time the cooling is reverse..
Water in the bottom out to top. ;)
@Ravindu Perera So? Just because something works, doesn't mean it can't be better. His condenser is maybe 30% as efficient as it could be. Not only does his setup result in lower parts of the column being hotter (ie. less effective), but the column is only half filled with coolant.
Do things properly, especially when the fix is as simple as hooking two tubes the other way around...
If you are doing that much work for such a small sliver of oil... Wouldn't you want to maximize efficiency?
Good catch, Daniel. I noticed that too.
Water should always flow in from the bottom of the cooler (the end closest to the flask) and flow out from the top of the condenser. Doing it this way always guarantees that your condenser will be filled with cooling water. If you set it the other way around, and if for some reason the speed of the water flow into the condenser decreases and becomes slower than the speed of the water leaving the condenser, the condenser will not remain filled with water. If the reaction were unattended, this could cause problems.
First thing I saw lol
Educating the educator good old RUclips😄
Well, he's right. It's _very_ basic stuff in chemistry to know how to properly set up a distillation apparatus. The guy in the video is presented like an expert, but his setup is frankly whack. @@icantcook9998
@@Roadiedave Same. Seems common among essential oil folk; hardly any of them use their distillation apparatus properly - and ironically are constantly talking about inferior products from big companies too.
@@bveracka ha! So true.
Like someone said, switch your pumps intake and outtake. The condenser vwill fill all the way if switched. And will remove air bubbles
I grew up in Portsmouth and I love Strawberry Banke! I’m an herbalist and one of my main hobbies is distillation! This video was great, I really enjoyed it. I have always used copper stills but I’m just beginning to get into using glass.
Organic lavender essential oil goes so well with techno
This was great, thank you so much for uploading! I cant wait to try!!
You Set the water pump up the wrong way round bro :)
Thank you lol
How is that wrong? I thought its more efficient to have the cold water come from the bottom as heat naturally rises so having the warmer outlet at the bottom takes away some efficiencies?
Right it was bugging me lol.
I just wanted to write about it it, but you were faster. Well done

This was so fun to learn. I’m going to do this! I love plants and science. Herbs, flowers, stems, roots, seeds, everything is fun to find out how the functions are cooperating. Thank you 🙏🏾
AWESOME, thank you for sharing! this is straight out of my alchemist life dream 😍
I for one say “live every day like tomorrow you’re going to need some crazy skill to survive”
The condenser water flow is reversed. It should be input on bottom and out at the top.
He's a noob and yet hes talking like hes a pro.
I noticed that too. That was the first thing that caught my eye. It is an easy fix, though. Just swap the two hoses.
That is the first thing I noticed. Lol I was like wait dude your condenser is not gonna work efficiently.
@@shaunjohle5091 no wonder he's talking about hours xD

Very informative.

that was a amazing video thank you

awesome, thank you! ❤
Tha was fun to watch!
Old is the gold process
That’s a great looking datura.
Who assembled the set up? The water in the condenser should flow from bottom to top😅
Excellent
thank you
Wow.. that's all it yielded from that many flowers?? Very interesting stuff.
Water in at the bottom and out the top of the condenser. Great video thank you.
How is that wrong? I thought its more efficient to have the cold water come from the bottom as heat naturally rises so having the warmer outlet at the bottom takes away some efficiencies?
@NagashiChidorii The issue is the guy has it set up with water in at the top and out the bottom from what I can tell. That means half the condenser isn't working because it isn't filled with water. Water should come in at the bottom and overflow out the top so the whole condenser is filled and utilized more efficiently.
@@Loganvbills spot on.
Gracias
nice very nice
Thank you for the interesting video. Did the kit come with the stand/stand clamps?
Yes kits come with clamps and stand very often or you can purchase parts separately for customization.
Do you have any recommendations on sourcing the lab glass?
Imagine how the room must be smelling😍😍
Honestly if the distillation is working, you shouldnt smell that much
What do you think about steel? Glass was my first choice but but lately I've been seeing steel and copper. My goal is oil not hydrosol but I know you still get some with glass. Thank you sir
Great video thank you but what about clove ...can you make another video about it?
Do you have a recommendation on what kit to buy. My girlfriend wants one of these for her birthday.
The hoses on your double condenser are mixed up. You switched the inlet hose for your outlet hose. Easy to fix, just swap the 2 hoses.
Where did you get that heat shield you have clamped near the burner?
Thank you for this, it's very informative and a big help to our thesis/research.
I have researched info on how to distill to get essential oils. What I don't understand though, is why can't you just put the plant material in the boiling water? I figured it would do the same thing. I know the videos I have seen of making essential oil from resins are done that way. The apothecary either smashes the resin to powder or they put the resin pieces in whole and just allow it to boil together. I guess I just want to know if there is any different thing you do with the resin distillation as compared to plant.
You can! That’s called Hydro Distillation!
How much would you say the modern Pyrex set up will run you and where is the most credible stores to buy it from whether in person or online,

Your comment was unnecessary..
Right.
so was ur comment
That’s a great
Loads of people have already mentioned the condenser thing, but I also wanted to point out that the essential oils aren’t the only product you get from the distillation. The “water” that you probably tossed is full of hydro sold that you can also use. Just something to keep in mind
We utilize the hydrosol and the essential oil after each cycle usually.
Do you sell a distiller that separates the hydrosol and essential oils?
How many ML is the size of the flask? I've seen sold in 500, 1000 and 2000ML and I have no idea what to compare it to.
500 ml. I’d recommend a small volume boiling flask for your solvent unless you’re extracting from large amounts of plant material. Larger flasks are only necessary when you’ve got a lot of plant material for every extraction cycle.
You've connected the water pump in a wrong way. Cold water should rise frome the bottom of the condenser, fill the condenser and get out on top of it. Otherwise, even if there are a few bubbles left, the apparatus might break because the temperature difference is too big. I'm not sure if it can do so in this specific case, but setting cold water at the bottom is traditionally correct and more efficient.
Not sure but I think the water come in at the bottom of the condenser so it fills the outer water jacket, and then runs out the top, more contact and shedding of heat.
Did you have some sort of screen to keep the lavender from falling into the boiling flask?
Yes, great question. I use a piece of stainless steal mesh to keep the plant material separated from the boiling flask below.
@@gardenlessonsatstrawberyba883 Thank you!! I needed to know about what type of screen you use. I will be buying some today !
Curious where the pressure is building up and if it is being released somewhere in the system. I think something in this apparatus would break if the steam wasn't given a chance to expand out.
The separator piece with the blue valve at the end is always open on one side which releases excess solvent (water) and pressure. More expensive distillation kits like rotary evaporators regulate pressure or control it with valves for more refined extraction like fractional distillation for example.
@@gardenlessonsatstrawberyba883 Just started learning. It's fascinating... Thank you.
The condenser also works at releasing pressure as it is a thermal conductor, takes the heat away, therefore removing energy and lowers pressure
On the third part, are you adding water or removing water?
Hi, where did you get this particular distiller?
Great, well explained. I wish I could have seen how you actually did to store the oil in the bottle. And another thought, the music of the video produced a lil bit of interference on the vibes.
We have tried now with both lavender fresh from my garden and frangipanis yet both have come out smelling (best to describe is old, stale, musky like) any ideas as to why this might be happening?
It’s advantageous to fraction off different layers of the distillate effectively with a cold trap/condenser. Excess Temperature can be a factor in the degradation of the essential oils if not regulated during distillation. In addition, when less stable fractions are in the distillate solution with oils and not removed, a rancid odor associated with the oxidation of less desirable fractions occur.
Where can I buy the glass condenser at? Any links?

Where can I buy this distillation kit?
I’m pretty sure they sell them on Amazon
Are the oils strong this way?
The cooling column is connected incorrectly in the video, the cooling water should go in at the bottom and exit at the top till fill the entire cooling unit
Can u put a link onto where I would buy the kit ur using? I'm wanting to begin doing it in my house
If you type in a search online for “steam distillation set” you will find many options for purchase. There’re copper and glass versions. I prefer the glass (borosilicate) sets like the one in the video.
@@gardenlessonsatstrawberyba883 which one would you recommend? I wanna start making my own fragrances.
How to stop plant material leakage through the reservoir flask to the bottom flask of steam distillation clevenger while extracting essential oil ?
Use some steel mesh
Hello, thanks for the video! But I’m still confused about how to connect the cold water. I saw a video where they had a pump and another one where they connected it to the tap. Hopefully somebody can help me here 🥺. I got that glass destillator here waiting for me ... So, I prepare a bucket with ice water and put the hose in, alright. But there was no pump included. The Liebig condenser has 2 openings, where do I connect the cold water hose? To the bottom opening? And then? Cold water will just be sucked in automatically? Please help!
The connection on the bottom of the condenser is usually the input valve for cold water to enter while the water flow can exit out the top of the condenser. Yes a small pump comes separately usually. You can use a sink attachment as well, running water from a faucet into the condenser the same way. Careful with water pressure and flow rate. The faucet setup uses a lot of water without recirculation so keep that in mind. I like to use a bucket with ice water with a small pump so I can recirculate through the condenser in a loop.
@@gardenlessonsatstrawberyba883 Thank you very much for your quick answer!! I will have to order a small pump then. I don’t have space near the sink and no possibility to connect the hose to the tap. At least they could tell people that a pump is missing when they sell the machine. Now I got to wait AGAIN. Thank you very much for your explanations!!
Are you able to list everything you used in the video? please
Casually standing in front of massive Datura plant.
why don't you use DCM or ethanol or EtOAc as solvent, it would be a lot easier to extract the oil from the plant material right?
I do use different solvents yet we prefer to demonstrate steam distillation at the museum. While other solvents such as ethanol will extract more effectively, steam distillation is safe and easy for people getting started with the process of extraction.
You have the cooling water hooked up backwards. It is supposed to come in from the bottom and out the top.
What temperature to use? Please help.. I’m pretty much only getting hydrolat instead of getting oil
Steam distillation requires temperatures around the boiling point of water.
212 Fahrenheit
You want it to be on a slow simmer rather than full boil.
Keep in mind, volume ratio of plant material to oil differs depending on what type of plant you’re trying to extract from. Some extractions require high volume of plant or flower to produce an ample amount of full spectrum oil.

Thank you so much for your reply!
I have heard about this yes.. I know rose you would need much more flowers to extract oil than for lavendel.
Didn’t know about the simmer boil though, thank you 🙂
I will give this a try and hopefully it will work this time..
I have also read that for each plant a different temperature is needed to extract oil for best results. Can you confirm this? I just started this journey and it’s hard to find good information.
Hello sir ,I tried to extract essential oil from moringa olifera leaves by hydro distillation method .I got more water insted of essential oil.. please let me know about this problem.
Different herbs will yield different amounts of oils due to the variation of naturally occurring oils within their tissues. Steam distillation with some herbs requires an increased volume of plant material in order to yield more oil. Hydrosols can be produced otherwise but they will certainly have more distilled water in them than oil.
Only use fresh
Where did you buy your glassware?
You can find various vendors online. I would search steam distillation set for multiple options. Many different kinds. Buying separate glass parts for a full set can save cost.
Very nice video, easy to follow. Thanks. How and from where to buy this distillation kit ? Can we also extract rose oil from this kit ?
Lots of models online with an Essential oil steam distillation kit search. 500-1000 ML should do the trick. Yes but Rose oil is very difficult with steam distillation since it requires a lot of flower volume up front to extract a good amount of oil. Extracted Hydrosols and Tictures that can be reduced to a refined oil is often easier.
How long does it take for lavender to fully be distilled
2 hours to yield that small amount of oil
Hi! May i ask if you dried the lavender first?
Lavender can be dried in bundles before an extraction. However, an extraction of a fresh harvest will yield more oil.
@@gardenlessonsatstrawberyba883 thank you for replying! We are having an experimental research about lavender as a mosquito repellent and it's hard to find fresh lavender here in our country. I'm from Philippines btw

Water enters through the inlet closest to the top of the condenser and exits through the inlet nearest to the bottom.
Can you recommend a distillition system?
The one in the video was sourced from a California company. You can find many like it online if you search steam distillation set. Copper or borosilicate glass available. You can also source each piece independently to customize your sets. Sets that are sold complete are great for beginners getting started.
Which quantity can i make with it? Thx
Great informative video but the music is so distracting.

has any one told him he has the water flow backward for the Condenser?? its backwards the flow is in at the bottom of the Condenser and exits at the top to get as much contact and cooling as possible with the Condenser, fix this and I am sure you will see an increase in performance & function
5.36 what do you mean "inexpensive"?
Where can I by this distillery unit?
Many versions are available online with a search for steam distillation set. You can source sets or individual pieces to save a bit of cost. Water pump and condenser hoses sold separately.
3:30 How do you get colder ice?
A glass cold trap or dry ice condenser can be used to substitute the basic condenser seen in video that uses ice water circulation. Not technically ice, but frozen CO2 (dry ice) can improve the efficiency of the extraction process.
Good question!
Ice made from H2O exists at any temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (at atmospheric pressure).
So, it just depends on how cold your deep freeze can get!
However, once your ice is added to the bucket, the H2O flowing through the condenser is basically constantly at a temperature of about 32 degrees Fahrenheit --- much colder than his room temperature water that he is using initially in the video.
So, the really cold ice just basically keeps the condenser water temperature close to 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
Hi. Can I use alcohol to extract CBD oil?
CBD is a fractional extraction. A basic tincture will often have more of a full spectrum of different layers that can be separated into different fractions. Professional products require extra steps in the extraction process for refining. Look up Column Chromatography for one version of this method. You can use simple tinctures but keep in mind that it will not be purely CBD without extra steps.
Iwant to buy distillation unit, do you sell ?
i'm producing safron..can i extract oil from its flowers
It has high value as a raw ingredient so I personally don’t make extractions with it beyond culinary cooking methods.
where can I purchase the kit please
A search for steam distillation set can give you many options online. Basic glassware can be purchased piece by piece to safe cost. When starting out I would suggest more of an investment with the hot plate relative to glassware.
👾🤗😍
btw water should be going up the condenser for better cooling

How big is your flask
The condenser column set up incorrectly... the water is supposed to enter from the bottom and exit from the top... that way, the whole condenser fills with cold water which provides the maximum cooling efficiency of the column.
