    Thanks for the video. To keep shadows clean using clog 3 on the R5C, I find it's possible to overexpose into the super whites. It may look a little over exposed on the LCD display but if the highlights don't flatten a few percentage points past 100 IRE on the waveform monitor it indicates there's still information there. Works particularly well with raw as you can lower the ISO in post and get back to correct exposure with shadow detail looking a lot cleaner and highlights still in tact. Using a color managed workflow in Resolve also helps as it provides a larger color space to grade in prior to outputting to rec 709.

    NOTE:
    I found if you do white balance with a ND filter on it doesn't work, colours turn out awful. Well on my R3. You need to remove for it to work. I just expose to the zebras at 65% (in conjunction with my hystergram). I know this is slightly high. But i find if i set it lower the subject is a little dark for my liking, causing me to add brightness in post which effects the image. I use Lumafusion so haven't got the tools of other editors for colour grading. Hope that helps some users. 👍

    Or... perhaps, before you start recording, you must turn off all of the extra info.

      I don't have a video about it, but it's pretty straight forward. Shoot at the base ISO of whatever log profile you are in. Shutter speed is double the frame rate. 24p ->1/50, 30p -> 1/60, 60p-> 1/125, etc. Get your proper exposure using the aperture and a variable ND filter (if it's bright outside or if you want a very low aperture).

    I think that waveform monitor goes to 110%, not just 100. So you shouldn't see the red clipping bits until you hit 110. You have a bit more wiggle room than you think. Not sur ehow usable the highlights in the 100 to 110 range are (probably the yellow parts on the false color).

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 года назад +1

      There is quite a bit of latitude in the highlights but I found if I exposed slightly less than when red showed up in the false color, the highlights would be clipped when I brought it to edit. I lower it just a bit more than that. If you are interested in the dynamic range of the R5C, I made a video about it: ruclips.net/video/USqWeohuB14/видео.html

    • @Josh_Sattin

      Unfortunately I focus on video stuff on this channel because I personally don't do much photography. As far as I know, the R5C in photo mode is identical to the R5 without IBIS.

    • @RolandAyala
      @RolandAyala 2 года назад +1

      Regarding the effects of no IBIS on stills, it's a math problem that only you can answer for how you intend to shoot. It should go without saying that if shooting handheld in low light, you're going to sacrifice IQ (by cranking ISO) to maintain a sharp image @ 45MP assuming aperture already wide open. The Lens OIS helps, but, compared to an R5, you're giving up several stops by not having IBIS. Frankly, I think Canon got it right by not putting IBIS on the R5C. IBIS is designed/intended for stills photography to deal with jittery hands, etc., but its effects are seen when shooting video w/ sweeping motions and it makes the video look very amateurish IMHO -- this holds true for all systems (Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc.), but esp. w/ Canon w/ it's wobble problem when shooting at wide angles.

    Sorry, but this is not quite right exposing in CLOG 3. You need to consider that Clog 3 is compressing highlights and shadows, and once converted to REC 709 it will decompress and hit the clipping point. This happened to me ones and I had to color grade everything manually. Yes if you are normalizing color manually, it might work but it is not correct. It needs to be converted into REC 709 first. Normalizing color is not just manually pulling contrast and saturation. The bottom line, when exposing in Clog you need to leave space for rec709 conversion.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Год назад

      If you are exposing as high as possible without clipping then you might need to adjust the exposure in post before applying the REC 709 conversion. Depending on your software either use nodes or put the adjustments in the correct order.
      exposure adjustments -> REC 709 conversion -> extra grading

      I mean…. assuming you’re serious, you could raise your shutter speed/decrease shutter angle and that will also help to darken your exposure. But if you’re shooting way below the base ISO, stopped all the way down, and with a super high shutter speed, your footage will look bad. There’s no way around that. It will be choppy, with a super deep DOF, and decreased dynamic range. If you’re shooting video, you really should be using NDs. They are essential essential essential for video work
