  • Describing my own experience with ADHD and hopefully providing some context for people who are wondering if they have it.
I'm just a guy who has ADHD, not a doctor, so do keep that in mind.

taking medication is like getting into a quiet taxi after a metal concert

That's such a good metaphor. Also slightly scary because I'm currently in a taxi home from a Rammstein gig 😂

@@davidhart1578 you know that thing where you have something you need to do, you imagine doing it and how good that would feel, then you move on without actually doing said thing? yeah that, but me responding to you.
just wanted to say that i found you first through one of your software videos - saw the guitars in the background and the way you were talking, then see this video, and then you mention metal. lol.

I listened to your whole video and I was happy to learn that I do not share those symptoms that you described. Although I do have a problem with ordering things on Amazon and then just letting them sit in boxes. I have a $600 3-D printer. I ordered last black November and it’s still sitting in its box in my basement. I also struggle with obesity because I want to snack and eat all the time even when I’m not hungry; I’ve had binge eating problems in the past or I’ll just keep eating because I don’t wanna stop even though I’m so full that it hurts. But I don’t think it’s exactly the same as what you talked about. In any case, I liked your other video about senior engineers. I’m on my way to becoming one and it’s been difficult for me to shift my mindset. I actually went through a lot of the fundamentals that you said are crucial for becoming a “senior engineer“. The hard part for me is wearing a hat or wearing the hat of someone in management. I find myself coming up with tasks for others to complete more and more often, and advocating for things in public channels that aren’t my job. My boss told me I’m doing excellent. But it just really got to my head. In a way that makes me anxious. It would be cool if you could make a video about the responsibilities of a senior engineer. I do like what you said, about what a senior engineer should be able to do: “a senior engineer should be able to dive into a problem space they don’t have experience with and Solve the problem anyway”. I’ve definitely been doing that. The hard part though is “politics“. I got advice from this guy who got over 12 years of experience, and he told me I have to save up Political capital before I spend it advocating for things in public channels essentially. I don’t normally think about things like that. I don’t unusually think about things like that either; I never think about things like that. Do you ever think about your actions and behaviors on a self analytical level?

Ah sorry to hear about what you're dealing with. I know assessments cost a bit but it might even be worth talking to a therapist to see if they think you should get assessed. It might also be a result of the anxiety you mentioned (obviously I'm not a doctor so take that with a huge grain of salt).
It sounds like work wise you're doing well. I get the anxiety that comes with these things, I've advocated for others in the past and found that it ends up being a point of contention with management. If it's truly stressing you out remember you're not obligated to solve others' problems, especially if you're struggling yourself.
Personally I told my boss during a catch-up that I need extra validation sometimes, as I assume the worst when I don't get feedback. If you think that's something your boss would listen to it might be worth a go. In some cases managers are busy dealing with people who aren't performing well and they just assume everyone else is tipping along fine.
Hope you get it sorted! I have a few ideas for videos around mindset so I might touch on the topic of responsibilities again at some point. All the best!

Takes a lot of backbone to be this honest.

The other I wanted to make pancakes so I went to the store to get milk (and other things). At home, I realized that I had forgot the milk so I went back to the store and bought milk. Then I got home again, I realized that I had actually bought milk the first time but I forgot I put it in the fridge.

At the time of recording I had started on Concerta. It worked well but I ended up having mood swings on the higher dose so I've recently switched over to Vyanse, so far so good but I guess everyone's reaction is different. Hope you're doing well and thanks for watching ❤️

Yeah it's been doing the job for me. I've been on it for just under a month and haven't had any side effects.
