The original story of the game is.... he is in a happy family however he gets in a brutal car crash and his wife dies. Then his children are playing when the boy pushes his sister off the roof of the house. She then dies. Then the neighbour locks the boy in the basement to protect and keep him safe. He then pretends theyve gone missing. Hence why he puts up missing posters. We as a kid stumble upon the basement. Then he traps us in there to keep his son safe. We then escape. Traumatised by our past experiences. We go back to our childhood home. We then have a dream and act 3 is a nightmare. In the dream. We defeat the shadow thing and ultimately escape our past traumatic experiences. However the neighbour cant conquer it. He then kills himself out of sadness and guilt. Hence why the neighbour house is abandoned.
To explain the shadow thing. It's a representation of fear. We as the player conquer our fears and can escape the nightmare. However the neighbour is still scared. So he ends it all.
In the modded version. We manage to go to all 5 of the neighbour's traumatic experiences. The 3 hearts are the worse fears and past experiences. And us the player have to go to them and destroy them. To free the neighbour of his fear and past. We then see the neighbour at the end as he is alive. And didnt kill himself.
However this is just my theory :)

In the first game, the shadow demon was the actual villian. The neighbor might have played out like one. But he was left to his grief and let his monsters take over. The Hello Neighbor one ending was beautiful. Nicky was being held by the demon as well which in the end makes you fell horribly sorry for him. He may of done bad things. But it was to protect the ones he cared so much about. Nicky developed PTSD from the events of Act 2. The story was about overcoming stressful events. People carry mental problems from traumatic incidents (this happened to nicky) The neighbor developed depression from the loss of everybody near him. (He lost his job after a theme park incident, then his wife, then his daughter) The story is more in depth on the affects of traumatic moments. Post Traumatic Stress disorder is a thing people suffer from. I think hello neighbor shows that perfectly. PTSD is a serious affect that happens everyday.

I think the story is that
The neighbor and his wife went out for a drive but the neighbor crashed the car which killed the wife. The neighbor was in a deep depression and started acting violently toward his kids so both of them ran off. The neighbor put up the posters then the shadow appeared and said that he can get his kids back but instead killed both of them. The boy got lured into the basement then killed and the daughter got pushed off the roller coaster. The thing tried to kill the neighbor but the neighbor managed to trap it into the basement. Then in act 3 where you run The shadow possesses the neighbor turning him giant. The shadow then tries to kill your past self but you protect your past self, then the neighbor barricades himself then the shadow tries to get him so you leave both of them there.
New ending:
When you help the neighbor the thing tries to stop you then teleporting all three of you to another dimension which had all the tragic memories of the neighbor but you and the neighbor ultimately kill the shadow traveling both of you back before all of this happened. So the neighbor prevents everything that happened and he thanks you many years later

I've never played this game, but the setup in the rescue scenario makes me think of only one thing: Symbolic self-loathing and grief.
1. He's shown in a car in the air: no matter how hard he stomps on the gas peddle, he's not going anywhere.
2. Someone he loves is injured or dying in a hospital room, and he's capable of doing so many fantastic things...yet at the end of the day the only thing he can do is sit there and wait for bad news.
3. He's standing and looking his massive personal "inner demon" in the face and it throws constant waves of searing pain at him over and over. Though he could run, he thinks he can't escape, or perhaps he doesn't want to and is letting himself be struck. If life is pain, what's the point in running? All you can do is brace for impact and wait for the next assault. Eventually you get used to it.
4. The pile of boxes has toys on it and probably in it. Those toys are connected to a painful memory or several, yet they're all he has left of whoever they belonged to, so he can't bring himself to get rid of them. Them being as large as they are symbolize their importance to him.
5. The graveyard is locked up because it is his most painful memory, and the switches that open each gate are symbolic in that each prior memory is connected to and leads to the end-result that you, the player, see: someone very dear to him died, and he doesn't want to dwell on it or can't because he might break if he does....
But you can open the gates. You can see his woes, and come to understand them in intimate detail. You can make him think about those terrible times, and, as a neighbor and friend, help him come to grips with it, and move on, even laugh again.
Come to think of it, this entire game might be symbolic of loss, pushing people away, burying relationships while in denial, someone slowly working their way past your defenses only to find another layer, and another, then learning the lies you tell yourself, and in the end helping you overcome them and move forward with your life again.

The neighbor got into a car accident and killed his wife, later on his son accidentally killed his sister (the neighbors daughter) the neighbor doesn’t want his son to get in trouble so he decides to put up wanted posters and hide his injured daughter in the basement, his son wants to free the daughter because he can’t handle the guilt so he goes into the basement to try free her the neighbor gets angry and decides to force his son into the basement and locks him into the room in the basement, when you explore the basement you find his room but no son in it, you then get locked in by the neighbor, but later on you get set free, if you look through the keyhole when you get set free you can see that the boy freed you and is healthy and safe, the neighbor is crazy at this point, when you exit the basement you see the massive wall because the neighbor realises his son has escaped, that’s why he built the wall, the neighbor is lonely by himself and crazy, the son abviously ran away because he doesn’t want to live with his crazy dad I’m not sure if the daughter is alive but that’s what we will find out soon!
Tbh I think it represents trauma in general. Not just grieving.

Damon Waldo haha you don’t play as the son he is mad at you because of what happened with his kids. The wife died in an car accident. The son killed the daughter that leads to him putting the son in the basement and locking it. The kid that was always screaming and he was locking in the basement was the son. We play as a random person the the neighbour doesn’t know at all.

YOU CLEARLY HAVEN'T UNDERSTOOD THE ENDING!!!!!
The suitcase belongs to the character you play as. In the normal ending, we see the suitcase open, but we don't get to see what's in it. In the secret ending, we see our character with "the neighbour"... but he's much older, and when we look in the suitcase, we see a photo of the neighbour and his family. Why would we have that picture in the suitcase? Because it's not his family, but our family. We've been playing as the neighbour's son all this time. The reason for the nightmares (the gameplay) is because of the trauma of past events. That's why the neighbour is old at the end, and that's why we were with him, *because* *he's* *our* *dad.*

in my opinion, this should be the real ending:
1. this boss is a real boss because he attacks you compared to the neighbor in act finale
2. it is not like beta 3
3. it tells kind of a story
4. this was made by video game news who deserves the attention

The protagonist was kidnapped by the neighbor as a child, and soon escaped to grow up with that trauma and ptsd. Soon he gets over it though, finally deciding to heal from his childhood and have a good life
All the gates represented the storyline. Him in the car was the car crash him and his wife were in, the mannequin in the hospital was his wife, his son used the toy gun to shoot his sister, the doll was his daughter's, and that SIMMING poster with the boy and girl on it, the poster actually said MISSING and those kids were his children.
Plot Twist: He didn't want you to find his retro games in his basement

I really hope that we will be able to actually save him in the sequel.
I almost cried when I found out why the Theodore Peterson [The neighbor] was so evil. The real ending, having to leave him there, made me sad. Also, why didn't he just grab the chair and break the window? That would've been much smarter than just me waiting to see his next move and he just stands still. ALSO also, somebody needs to make this mod for Nintendo Switch. I guess I could see if I can get the mod on my Chromebook...
Here’s why he couldn’t break out:
The Shadow Man represents fears/traumas. Throughout the First Game, there are these so called ‘Fear Rooms’. These Fear Rooms represent Nicky (the player’s) traumas. Nicky beats the fear rooms (gets over his traumas). His final trauma is the neighbour (from being locked in from Act 2). He beats the neighbour’s trauma. But the neighbour never gets over his trauma, the house represents that the neighbour is locked with his fears (The Shadow Man). The neighbour never got over his fears, and has too live with him, and in the normal ending you have too leave him.
I have a doubt, is that secret ending real in the game or is everything false? 🤨

The neighbor had a family he had a wife,and 2 kids boy and a girl the boy couldn't control his reactions of how his mother died and the girl was sad too but she wanted to be happier with her brother but the boy pushed her off the roof from the house, and the neighbor got depressed and anger and so it was just the boy and him but the one that was trying to save him was the son.........

Maybe the neighbour’s wife died in the car accident and the neighbour become depressed and started acting violently towards his children, so they ran away. Scared.

A demon (the weird black thing) said that it can bring his children back and so, the desperate neighbour agrees for the demon to help him but instead, the demon made the children scared and end up killing them. The boy was killed by the demon(?) and the girl died in a rollercoaster.
The neighbour got mad at the demon and locked it in the basement so that no one will experience the same thing as he did

Maybe many of you didnot know this but the thing is actually the neighbour 's family joined together. This why the neighbour doesn't do anything.
Idk why we would save him he buried US ALIVEEEEE multiple times
Bruh it was not his fault because he was a nice and happy man with a family but then his wife died so he got upset and then his son killed his daughter which made him a grumpy man because all of his family had died
Its because that it isnt his fault. He lost his wife in a car crash, Hes son killed his daughter and The son died aswell. He’s also stuck in the shadow nightmare and the thing wants to kill the neighbor aswell. My theory is that he only locks his secrets up and pulls us back and that he’s puzzles become more challenging is that he wants us to be safe from the shadow and we just unveil them all and then it goes over him because in the end the thing wanna kill the neighbor. He was never a villain. Only a sad man who lost his family and is haunted by a horrible nightmare. If you think about it we were the villains all along and he never was….

For anyone who doesn’t know or isn’t a theorist, the shadow thing is the the neighbors son
I think it is the wife of the neighbor

Ames Games it could possibly be his anger and I think it’s his son. But in my opinion it is not the wife, think about act 1 after being caught a few times, we saw the neighbor get into a car accident and there was a girl in the car with him and as he stumbled over to the car to check on her he fell to the ground crying, later we see him at the hospital as a bed goes flatline. Also it act two first scene when you are locked it basement if you look through the key hole when it’s unlocked you see a cardboard cutout of a boy unlocking it. Also the daughter is dead as seen by the roller coaster ride it shows life from the boys point of view of a happy family turning sad and his anger building up until he pushed his sister of the roof. And now our poor neighbor has 2 family members to bury. He is scared and puts his son in the basement to keep him safe and puts up wanted posters to convince himself they aren’t dead. And that’s it. And ever since I played hello neighbor hide and seek my theory has been growing stronger.

My theory is that the wife was terribly injured and was in the hospital and then died and the poster says the kids are missing I think someone kidnapped them and the daughter didn’t live and the boy did and escaped and forgot about the past but remembered his parents and wanted to get in his old house but it was different and the dad didn’t know that is his son and doesn’t want him to know the neighbors secrets
