How to paint loose eucalyptus leaves - easy quick fun watercolor using wet in wet technique

  • Today we’re going to practice painting our wet-in-wet leaves and using the eucalyptus baueriana as our model! There are over 700 varieties of eucalyptus and they are mostly native to Australia. With their blueish leaves - sometimes even silvery - they make a lovely addition to a floral arrangement whether painted or in real life. This is a quick, easy, fun watercolor project and it would make a perfect warmup or practice piece to get your wet in wet and color mixing creativity flowing.
    Materials:
    Paint
    Dark Green (eg Hookers, Olive or Sap Green Deep…)
    Mid Blue (eg Ultramarine, Cobalt, Turquoise…)
    Yellow (eg Cadmium, Lemon, Aureolin…)
    Paper
    140lb cold pressed watercolor paper (eg Fabriano, Winsor & Newton, Bockingford, Canson, Etival, Etchr etc)
    Brushes
    Princeton Aqua Elite size 12 round
    Drawell round series 11-2 size 12

Thank you - I enjoy your conversations!

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  Год назад

      You can do it! you can definitely do it Deanna! I think the key is not to try to hard. Use plenty of paint, don’t worry too much about what color it is, let the colors mix on the paper, don’t overwork the leaves, just a couple of strokes and let it alone. Use a round ended brush for the leaves and a pointed one for the stems. Don’t draw the leaves first, just wing it. Keep my reference work in the corner of your eye and don’t look at it too often! Now, GO GIRL!

I will let you know how it goes!

    Diane, I wanted to update my last comment to say that I did end up painting this. I started by doing a 4 x 6 size for a card for a friend. I used the colors you suggested and it turned out beautifully if I do say so myself. I purposely created some blooms and love the effect. I also added a border using that lovely gold paint from Germany. I love it and am going to make more of these for cards and even plan to do a larger size to frame and display in my home. You inspire me like to other! Thank you.

    Your speaking style is natural . Wouldn’t change that! Great tutorial and enjoyed painting along. About Arches vs Fabriano. Arches have bright white and natural and the cold press is designed to take the paint into the tooth of the paper. The Fabriano you are using is actually the student grade version is bleached white that does not take in as much water, so it sets on top a little like hot press does but has a texture. Their artist grade has a different texture and deeper tooth and is 100% cotton.

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  Год назад

      Thank you so much for the feedback! I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed painting along and thought my speaking style was natural. It's great to hear that you noticed the difference between Arches and Fabriano paper! It's true that the student grade version of Fabriano paper is bleached white and doesn't take in as much water, but the artist grade does have a deeper tooth and is 100% cotton so it absorbs more paint. This can be challenging for the beginner and not everyone realises that professional quality materials are not necessarily the best ones for learning on!

    You are a delight, Diane! I think I can put you on the track from where you lost your “train” of thought. You were saying that the Arches watercolor paper you used for the roses went swoosh and sucked in the color and then you went to the Fabriano paper and showed how it stayed on top. I think it was the swoosh sound that made you think about the lady from the speaking class. ??

    Never ever change your chattering, it is just very natural, real and uplifting! And that is an urgent must nowadays, it is dying out so to speak, since everything is artificial, voiced over and just not enjoyable at all! But hey, Tom Hanks, really? OMG, no, I'd rather die alone on a desert island than having to share some air with that uh ... creature. I think Klaus Kinski was pretty creepy but if I'd had to chose....he was very intelligent, that makes him a lot more attractive, for me at least. Nice painting! And yes, the Arches paper is not my thing either, everybody raves about it, so I took the plunge but I'm kind of dissappointed. I love the Baohong paper, rough and cold pressed, but it is pretty expensive too 😞 The Arteza expert is a wonderful paper too, the colors are intense, nearly all the brands I tried come out very intense, but hey, it is crazy expensive too. Since the C-thing was put into the world paper became so expensive, even toilet paper 😕

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  Год назад +1

      Hi Marvelenia! Don’t worry, I’m just joking about Tom Hanks!! I have a tendency to say whatever comes into my head and sometimes it’s not got much connection with my actual thoughts! I tried Baohong but thought it was too expensive because the sheets tended to vary in quality within the block. I haven’t tried Arteza, it’s hard to get in Europe. At the moment I’m focusing on Hahnemühle and Fabriano, which seem to be more suited to the way I am currently painting. Everything is expensive, it’s true. Reminds me of the 70s.

    V pretty. It always makes me chuckle when foreigners identify eucalyptus leaves as looking like this or as 'silver dollars' - Eucalypts are indigenous to Australasia & despite what Wikipedia thinks, there are 934 identified main varieties indigenous to Australia & 65,000 specimens in the Australian National Herbarium's Centre for Australian Biodiversity Research - of which, almost 0% (nearly zero per cent) of them have those round leaves... & we don't even have silver dollars here, they're just a normal, gold/brass-coloured coin. LOL. Thanks for making me smile :)

      Yes, you’re right, I looked it up online before I did the painting. I think people tend to think of eucalyptus in terms of what they get offered in the florists shops to put in their floral arrangements. Being from the UK we have a bit more of a broad knowledge about eucalyptus and there is a fine collection of ornamentals in Kew Gardens and at Lullingstone. Apparently the one we are familiar with is the ornamental eucalyptus gunnii. Thanks for your input, much appreciated!

    Dear Diane, I agree with your thoughts on the fabriano paper. I just recently bought a small pad of the 1264 fabriano spiral bound just to try it and I have to say I love, love , love it 😊 It cost less then a fiver for A5 and is 25% cotton and is 100% environmentally friendly, so what's not to like lol!! I would really like to try it in block form if they do it. It has a lovely feel and texture and paints lifts off easily and you can scratch into it . Its a real pleasure painting on this paper ! Btw Diane I am still a dedicated fan of your channel , you produce some fabulous things and I admire your creativity, it often kick starts me into action when I get a brain freeze !!😉😍 Love this little painting of eucalyptus x

    Diane - you are magic! I need a little wand to bibbity bobbity blue my brush strokes! I also need a real round brush with no point…. Could you provide a link to one?

      @DianeAntoneStudio  Год назад

      Hi Charlie, thanks so much for your lovely comments! As regards a brush with no point, do you have an old brush that has lost its point? If not I think a filbert might be the best way to go. All the round brushes I have come across are sold complete with a very pointed end. The one I used which was blunt is an old brush. Here’s a link to a filbert in case you want to give that a try - I’m pretty sure it would work. amzn.to/3IlrKLR

    i wonder what kind of paper you used here.n It seems to have horizontal lines in it, which adds to the texture of your painting. I love it. I believe you said it was Fabriano, but which version? Thank you. I love your paintings, your whimsical style, and your great, optimistic attitude. It is so encouraging for beginners like me.

    Diane, girlfriend.. you are worrying way too much about how you speak or 'sniff'.. Your RUclips channel is exactly as i would like it to be.. authentic or 'real'.. calming, laid back , honest, and most of all you make me feel like i can paint what you are painting.. I would not change a thing and i hope you won't. I love the way you chat with us while you paint about anything and everything.. Its time to stop worrying and apologizing and just be you. Thats why we are all here. Hugs! deb

      Hi Deb, thanks so much for your lovely supportive comments! But I have no intention of changing anything about the channel! I don’t think I could, even if I wanted to, which I don’t! Honestly, I was just talking about somebody who works in the field of communication, and she was trying to help people who upspeak or use vocal fry! I’m not guilty of either of those habits, thank goodness! So glad that you like what we do! So glad that you are finding joy in painting. Thanks very much for caring! Hugs to you too!
