- Wooly is back and the froth is real! 6 months has been a long time healing the knee but he is back ready to go and the first board out of the editing studio is the JS SUB XERO.
Wooly weighs 87kg/192lb and is 6'1"/187cm tall
Wooly is riding a 5'10" x 20 7/8" x 2 13/16" - 37.1L
What do you think of the new format??? Feel free to comment or send me an IG message.
From JS
THE FASTEST BOARD FOR SLOW WAVES.
This is everything you want in small surf. To create the Sub Xero, we combined the new Xero with our long running summer favourite, the Psycho Nitro. It has the Nitro’s ultra-fast low to flat rocker and full outline, but with the nose pulled in a touch, and a wider, straighter tail.
In the engine room, vee in the nose prompts quick rail to rail transitions, moving into a deeper single to double concave, which helps the Sub Xero to hold speed and change directions with minimal energy. Generous thickness & a flatter deck is complemented by slightly pulled down rails, similar to other boards with EasyRider style dimensions. This helps maintain volume throughout, while also making it easy to initiate turns and provide immediate response to hit any section on offer.
It’s designed to be as performance oriented as you could possibly ride in knee high waves, and we couldn’t be more excited to unveil it for those days you wouldn’t even get in the ocean without the right super groveler. For slow waves, you need the fastest board - enjoy the Sub Xero.
Ride your Sub Xero approx. 4-6 inches shorter than your Xero in regular dimensions.

I love how windsurfing technology, shping techiniques and materials have come to surfboards. Made soooo much difference in performance and choosing choosing the right board
Welcome back Wooly... It's great to see you back in the water.
Thanks! It's great to be back surfing again.
I struggled with it as a quad as well but then tried larger power twins in the front and some small quad rears and it’s a lot better!
I think just a small set of quads would have worked for me BUT I loved it as a 2 + 1 🤙. Give that a go if you have a set
Great review. But more importantly good to see you back in the water. The updated production quality of this vid is definitely worth the effort. Great content, truly a rough gig documenting your surfs lol
Good to be back! Glad ya liked it
thanks for video Wooly. I think that kind of outline and flat rocker works better with keels...
Thanks for the input. I’m not much of a fan of keels. Can’t seem to get them working for me so well. Think I’m too tall 😂
Yo Wooly 🤙, I went ahead and got a 6'6 Hyfi SX from Sanbah (had it in stock). Mate, so glad I did - it's a little rocket and I can't get over how whippy and fast it is - really reactive and positive. I'm riding the MF 2+1 fins in it (H4 styled things). It's harder to ride than what I've been riding recently because it's so responsive, but mate - I'm so excited about it. Some of the turns I've done on it make me feel like a pro lol... 😂😂😂
Thanks for the review 👍
Nice! Enjoy the board 🤙
Great review Wooly ,thanks.
Thanks!
Sick review🔥 Was looking at a Sharp Eye Twin Turbo but this review sold me on the Sub Xero. Nice work mate!
Thanks 🙏 🤙 enjoy the new board.
Enjoying the reviews mate keep up the stoke🤙
Thanks mate
Wooly, just picked up a 5’10 HyFi based on your review but in FCS. What FCS fin would you recommend to be comparable to the 2+1 in Futures you rode? Thx! Btw, built an entirely new quiver based on your reviews lol JS El Baron, Schooner, Xero Gravity and now this! Every board has been spot on!
I would probably look at the FCS Power Twin.
Look epic!
Love your review!
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it
Love me SubZero, great shape ..all day groveler
Yeah they are good fun 🤩
9:50 LOL 🤣
Board looks fun, I need more swallow tails in my life I reckon and I have those fins already🤙
It’s very hard work 😓
GREAT STUFF, I just got a Psycho Nitro which is the same rocker and bottom shape just wider in the nose and fuller rails which is good for the waves in Cornwall, did you find the Sub Zero lacked drive as a thruster , as I found the Nitro lacked projection off the bottom turn , now going to try it with a 2+1 hopefully it will have more speed in weaker waves, when the waves got a bit more pushy with hollow section the board flew.
I find that all my boards, for small waves, and with wide tails feel better as a quad or a 2 + 1. I prefer those 2 combos or thrusters in these type of boards.
It’s funny because I never really ride quads ever but they seem to work well in the grovel boards.
Wooly ! Thanks champ for testing grovel boards in truly shit waves . So many test at Trestles at 3ft where even I ,at 58 , could ride a 6 x 19 x 2 1/2 .After 40 years of Surfing OZ and South west France my current spot is in the German Baltic Sea and if the sub zero is as good as the “ Psycho Nitro “which is a perfect board for 1m at 5secs at than I AM SOLD .
Sick review. Mate what would you prefer for a groveller- bobby quad, sub xero or FireWire seaside?
The major difference is that the sub Xero has a 5 fin option which suits me because I’m not sold on a pure quad.
Talofa Wooly, would you go for the Mash Up or Sub Xero as a groveller. Looking at both.
Both are good, just different. Depends on what boards you are used to riding.
Another great review! I was wondering, would it work as a daily driver for someone surfing average waves for the most part? I'm 170cm@68kg, currently riding a 5'6 Sweet Potato (the helium model) by FireWire.
As far as my understanding goes, the Sub Xero should allow for a better range of waves, being a little bit narrower (comparing same length with Sweet Potato is -7 litres in volume and -2 inches in width). Not sure if I can use it on ankle/knee high tho, but I can keep the Sweet Potato for that.
Best 🤙
Yes mate that would be correct. Will have a bigger range than the Sweet Potato. SP will be better in the really small stuff so keep that for the grovel.
@@WoolyTV Thanks for the reply. I would have probably used it today since the surf was chest/head high but firing and the poor SP nose was flapping around like crazy 🤣
Still not decided if getting the Sub Xero or looking for a Mashup.
Wooly! What’ya think between this stick and the mashup?
After a few more surfs on this one I enjoyed it more and would probably choose it over the Mash Up BUT I did enjoy the Mash Up too 🤙
all the JS X series are types of fusion boards, I find I dont need a dedicated groveller as there is a enough groveller characteristics in things like the monsterbox ( now known as Xero gravity), and even the monsta 2020. I cant say for sure though as havent tried one yet, I just dont surf if waves are that crappy. Would love to try though, as could mean extra days surfing, and maybe can get better at surfing throwing one of those wide nose boards around in slop. So if I ever saw one going cheap gumtree ebay etc etc......i just might add to the quiver...
Yeah boards like the Sub Xero have a place for shit surf! All the other boards you mention don’t excel in knee to waist high waves. I had a lot of fun on this one in the gutless little beach break I surfed in the clip 🤙
@@WoolyTV cheers good review and info !!!
How does that construction hold up vs PU? Durability wise.
Wooly nice review man !
I have the Xero gravity and love it!
would you recommend to go for the Sub xero or Rocket wide ? (for the small mushy days 1-3)
Both would do the trick and I liked both of them. If would want a super groveller have a look at the JS Flame Fish too.
@@WoolyTV what do you think about the xero fusion ? It looks sick as well
@@RBNK157yeah I have ridden the Fusion and I feel great. I think I like the Fusion better than the Sub Xero
@@WoolyTV thanks again for your input as always wooly!
How did you size it ?
@@RBNK157 I went the 6’0” 33.8L and it feels good
Great review. Do you prefer this more than the FireWire Mashup?
Liked both of them. Preferred the Sub Xero in the really small stuff and the Mash Up in slightly bigger stuff.
Hi Wooly! I am a bit heavy for my height (172cm 80-82kg) and thinking of getting Sub Xero in carbotune. If I apply your weight to volume ratio for this board, my volume is going to be around 34.1L-34.5L and I’m stuck between 5’8 (33.8L) and 5’9 (35.3L). Would you recommend going bigger and get 5’9 or trust the low rocker for wave catching and go smaller? I’m intermediate, still working on my cut backs and thinking of using it as an everyday driver for pretty much any condition. Thanks!
@@hironodoubt4780 hi mate
Both of those would work for you. They do paddle well so you could probably get away with the lower volume. What board are you riding now?
@@WoolyTV thank you for your reply! I currently have 5’9 Mashup and 5’9 custom Hypto Krypto (34.8L). I hope even the smaller Sub xero its low rocker helps paddling better in super small waves. Let me know your thoughts
@@hironodoubt4780 ok I think you should be ok on the smaller one.
@@WoolyTV thank you so much!!
Awesome review! Do you prefer the sub xero or the new Fusion Xero? Can the new Fusion Xero be seen as groveler?
Hi mate, Ive only had a few surfs on the Fusion but Im liking that better than the Sub Xero. And yes, It can grovel!
Do still think the same ?@@WoolyTV
@@teamcamaleon yep. I prefer the Xero Fusion
I am talking about carbontune in both models@@WoolyTV
Hey Wooly…thanks for the review. do you think you could have got away with the 5’11…? I’m the same weight as you but have to wear a 5mm rubber man most of the year…😮
Hi mate. The 5’10” did feel pretty big at times but when I swapped out the fins it helped a lot. If I had to wear 5mm of rubber then I probably would go up in volume
Hi Wooly, good to see you back in the water. Do you think it’s a better groveller than the js bullseye 🎯
Hi mate.
It’s more of a step down from the Bullseye. I think the Sub Xero will grovel down to really small waves 🌊
Hey Wooley, great reviews! I’m an intermediate surfer who usually surfs a high performance long board or mid length looking to go shorter. Am looking at either the mashup, rocket wide or the sub zero, I’m 90kgs and 6’1 so looking at 6’2 to 6’4 as I’m also used to much longer rails. Could you recommend one of these 3? I’m leaning towards the mashup as I believe it might be the most forgiving given the foam on the tail area.
Hi mate
All 3 of those will do the trick for you - just don’t go too small. You will be used to the easy paddle of the mid and longboard so just don’t go too small! Just watch all 3 reviews and see which one will suit your waves better. 🤙
Great Review, how does it compare to the Rocket Wide Squash?
Works in pretty similar conditions. Both boards were fun for me in smaller surf. I have reviewed the Rocket Wide if you want to look at it 🤙
@@WoolyTV Yeah I checked out that review was also great, just trying to decide between the two for a small wave option
get a wooly dog up ya!
Straight back at ya
Do you think it would work better as a 2 plus one with side fins further back?
I did like it as a 2 + 1 as it was in the clip. Fin position felt good were it was 🤙
Hi Wooly :) I'm that shorter heavy guy... was tossing up between one of these and a Hypto Twin in the same volume. Do you have any recommendation to separate them? I guess five fin boxes is a big plus. Also, would you have a 6'6 Sub Xero in stock right now?
Yeah the obvious one is the opportunity to run the Sub Xero as a thruster, quad or 2 + 1.
I haven’t ever ridden a Hypto Twin so I’m not 100% on the difference between the two.
I can get a 6’6” HYFI one pretty quickly, a PU one would be around 4 weeks.
@@WoolyTV Cheers mate... I'm kinda averse to PU for smaller waves lol... was recently riding a 6'4 epoxy Kelvinator and loved it - couldn't get off it but I snapped it 😥 Appreciate the quick reply 👍
@@klaiejah you can’t beat the epoxy boards in small surf
@@WoolyTV Do you think the HYFI 2.0 is quite durable? The first iteration was said to break easily accessible to some owners… 🤷🏽♂️
*according to
I am 105kgs and ride a 51ltr - 6'6 JS Sub Zero after coming from a 43ltr R96 rOund nose fish by Lost. Glass and built quality of this JS is absolute shit without dispute. ITS my 2nd Shit quality JS. Gonna try it out for a while BECAUSE it is a good shape that ive had heaps before with local handshapers and ride it into the sand, get really used to it.
That’s no good. Mine has held up really well. Is it a HYFI or a PU?
@@WoolyTV my Black box 3 was hyfi made in Thailand. One of the Worst glass ive ever had. This one is PU. I just semi repaired the ding. The glass and resin layer is way to thin. Seems like a 2 layer of glass, not 4 or 6. It doesnt go too bad though. Getting used to the extra foam is weird. 👍
@@philipl.hankin6913 weird. All my HYFIs have held up great and all my PU made is Oz are by far the best finishes out of any of the Oz made boards. Bummer that you have experienced that with yours.
Welcome back 🙂.take it easy..how this board difference from ci happy every day? This one looke for fiat small wave board.you surf very well on ci.
Thanks. Very different boards. Happy Everyday is a everyday board where the Sub Xero is a grovel board.
@@WoolyTV thanks
This or the bullseye?
This is more of a grovel board than the Bullseye. I liked the Bullseye in head high surf. The Sub-Xero will surf down to very small waves.
@@WoolyTV righto, i have a rocket v3 already so xero is what im chasing then, cheers
Is this board just the old Sonic with a pulled in nose ?
More like the Psycho Nitro
how does this compare to the DHD Phoenix?
Hi mate, very similar! They would both excel in the same wave conditions. I have reviewed a Phoenix, if you want to check it out.
Cheers
@@WoolyTVwhich did you prefer in the end? I’m over in OZ next March and may visit you to pick one up!
@@spkay6317 hmmmmm I haven’t ridden either since I did the reviews on them but from memory I think the SuB Xero wins
Cheers mate. Do you mind if I ask what your preferred groveller is?
That probably sounded like I was asking the same question twice!. I thought that maybe if you hadn’t ridden these since the reviews that you might prefer a completely different board?
Hey Wooly, i d like to custom order a monsta 10 in hyfi2, what do you honestly think about that construction(hyfi 2), especially compare to futureflex(HS) which i think is the best epoxy construction
Hi mate
The don’t offer a HYFI Monta unfortunately
hey, yeah just saw that, what a joke!😴💥@@WoolyTV
@@matt-dc4mw the Monsta is a performance board so it’s going to be better in a PU. HYFI construction is better for boards that are for average surf. Maybe have a look at the Xero Gravity if you are looking for the HYFI construction. You can still surf the Xero Gravity in overhead surf.
no bro, im a bigger man so my performance boards are high in literage and heavier that s why i want it in epoxy, i mean i could do a PU pro glassing job but its not gonna last@@WoolyTV
@@matt-dc4mw go the Xero Gravity in the Easy Rider DIMs.
ever tried the Rasta quods
Not yet! Futures have recently released an update of the Rasta quads too 🤙
my absolute go to quad!
Editor messed up the sequence of videos a little haha 😂
He is just trying to keep you on ya toes
