Elmer Keith used .357 magnum to hunt deer at 200 yards regularly, .44 Magnum has almost double the muzzle energy. I agree, I don't understand why people have such an obsession with more power. I like my big guns too, but I see no reason to doubt the capability of cartridges specifically designed for hunting game by people who hold such a greater understanding of firearms than we ever will.

That sharpening stone is actually a magnesium block with a flint built in, you use a knife to scrape off some magnesium shavings into a pile and then strike the flint to light the shavings to start a fire 👌🏼

I've fired the ported 4” S&W 500 with max hand loads and it was "fun" enough. I can attest to what it does to a 2L soda bottle, just like in the video, instant mist! This non ported snubbie must be a beast :-) I think the kit was a great idea and wish I had one as it must be insanely valuable now. I did get the book though and it was a good read, hard to put down.

Knock the ferrocerium rod off the side of the magnesium block, break a chunk off about a quarter inch long, and wedge it in a hollowpoint. It'll spark off a steel plate or anything else mildly hard.

I've fired the ported 4” S&W 500 with max hand loads and it was "fun" enough. I can attest to what it does to a 2L soda bottle, just like in the video, instant mist! This non ported snubbie must be a beast :-) I think the kit was a great idea and wish I had one as it must be insanely valuable now. I did get the book though and it was a good read, hard to put down.
