It was obviously just an excuse to get Faye involved. But it makes Katerina deciding to go out in a blaze of glory a little weirder when she's no longer a poor girl that has just lost her last chance at a better life, and has no other options but death, prison, and her increasingly unstable boyfriend. When I know she's got some rich dad out there and that Spike would totally help her out because she's not his target ... the suicide loses a bit of its impact

@@TheJadedJames I'm not super keen on the added backstory as well, it removes some of the nuance the original had, but I feel like it's worth mentioning that Netflix Katarina didn't exactly have it easy considering her dad was abusive. Her anime counterpart is still superior in my opinion, after all being a poor woman trying and failing to build a better life hits harder, but to Netflix's credit, the message still stands here. Katarina is a woman who was born into an unforgiving environment, and despite her best efforts of rebuilding a new life and a stable family, she ultimately fails. I will say though, it did seem like a cheap way to get Faye involved.

I don’t understand what is so hard about writing a bad-ass female character that’s actually already been written before. Faye should be gorgeous, witty, charming, and manipulative. Masculinity and femininity have nothing to do with it. This is just purely vulgar with for no reason at all. You have Ripley from Alien in live-action as one of the greatest bad-ass characters who happens to be a female, and you have the same with Faye in anime. Zero vulgarity in either of them. Saying “fuck” every two seconds with a shit-eating grin on your face might be cool to elementary schoolers, but not in the real world.

Wow. Just wow. When Daniella Pineda got casted and everyone gave her shit because her body type wasn’t like Faye’s I defended her since despite that difference she could still capture Faye’s essence. When they revealed the outfits I critiqued the outfits while still defending Pineda because an outfit isn’t the core trait of a performance; the anime outfit looks good, but seeing it live-action would just seem like a cosplay. Case in point, Jet and Spike’s Netflix outfits are near 1-to-1 recreations of the anime outfits, and they look like cosplays rather than real outfits. I defended Pineda through a lot of the shitstorm, but finally seeing her in action, fuck she sucks as Faye. Faye isn’t a quippy girlboss. She’s underhanded, manipulative, sarcastic, dry, clever, etc. Netflix Faye will rob you at gunpoint while making snide little comments. Anime Faye will lure you in with her sweet-nothings while she picks your pocket. If Anime Faye is outmatched, she will instigate a fight among the big guys and slip out the back while they’re distracted. She’s a scrapper, she’s a survivor. She’s vulnerable. She’s lonely. There is simply so much depth to Faye’s character and Pineda did not capture it at all.
That being said, Pineda’s character isn’t bad. She worked as best she could with the material she was given. If this was some other show, name it Spaceguy Rocksteady, and Pineda was playing some other character, name her Holly Halloween, I’d probably want to see more of her. But as it stands, this simply isn’t Faye, and what they delivered wasn’t worth the price of admission.
Rebooters really need to stop disrespecting the fans when making this shit or else it’ll keep flopping.

Netflix's idea of a strong female character is a female character that acts like a vulgar dude. Faye was a seductress, a Femme Fatale, a darn good pilot, an expert in escaping capture, and a damn good bounty hunter who melded unto criminal circles to get close to her target. Faye rarely ever needs to shoot anybody: fights and gunplay was all Spike. Faye was strong in all the areas where Spike wasn't.
And why introduce Faye this early? The 1st episode served the purpose of establishing the world, the character's of Spike and Jet, a brief look at their relationship and occupation, showing their skillsets, and establishing the tone of the series. Taking away Fayes episode on the Casino takes away from Faye's introduction to her personality and skill set. Instead, they cram it all here in the first episode, which just overloads the views brain with information they don't quite need yet.
I really had to push through after the 0:20 mark, because Faye's actress is annoying, vulgar, and way the he'll out there. She tops Netflix Radical Ed as being one of the worst actresses in this show. Honestly, just watch the original, because thus adaptation is an embarrassment.

Were it not for the purple hair, I don't think the audience would have any reason to even assume this is Faye based on this introduction scene.
She's nothing like Faye in appearance, speech, mannerisms, etc. Since when was Faye a martial artist? Since when was Faye a martial artist anywhere near skilled enough to hold her own against Spike of all people?
Faye's biggest assets were always her charm and her cunning. When she got the better of the Bebop crew in the anime it was with her wits, not by trying to wrestle Spike to the ground.
I don't even see a trace of that persona here.

Whedonspeak is all over Cowboy Bebop, especially whenever Faye Valentine talks. In particular, the scene when Faye is handcuffed to the Bebop’s toilet in its opening episode has that particular veneer of insincerity that is endemic to this style of dialogue, especially when it’s done badly. The characters aren’t talking to each other-they’re speaking in quips and asides, lines meant to make the audience laugh more than they’re meant to convey who these characters are.
It isn’t that there aren’t occasions where characters should act detached or sarcastic in Cowboy Bebop. It’s just that when every character is this detached, all the time, it’s alienating. These characters aren’t being detached for a reason, but saying quippy things because it is the most clever or writerly way to say them. These are things you might put on a graphic T-shirt, not the way that fully defined characters react.

I hate Marvel for making Whedonspeak popular I miss sincere storytelling rather then just winks to the camera every 5 seconds

I called it Marvilizing but Whedonspeak is even better. They just keep shoehorning jokes where they don't belong.

    • @TheJadedJames
      @TheJadedJames 3 года назад

@@uncensored008 It is sad this has become Whedon’s legacy. Because if you look at something like Serenity or Avengers 1, they are scripts unmistakably written with his style of dialogue. But he is usually a lot better at walking a certain razor’s edge than a lot people imitating that style by desperately trying to inset wit they don’t have into what would be otherwise straightforward dialogue

Oh look, another film or show where a woman can fight a man to a draw despite the large difference between training and experience. Naturally, the man only counters and parries while the woman gets easy shots in on his balls. All with about a dozen shots between each movement because fight choreography is beyond modern filmmakers. Same shit. Different studio.
